I was referred to Dr. Schletter by a good friend who has been seeing the Doctor for 20 years. I was in search of a second opinion for my 10-year old, as I was not certain that the prescription she had from her (now former) optometrist was helping her enough - or even correct. I was very impressed with both the doctor and his wife. Maybe it's because I grew up on the east coast, but I felt instantly at ease with their style. Dr. Schletter completely focused on my daughter and in one session got to the source of her vision problems. Then he examined me and fixed my eyes too. I had thought I only needed glasses for reading and was surprised to learn that I had, over the years become slightly farsighted. The first pair of glasses he made for me were hard for my brain to adjust to. The Doctor really is a magician - somehow his managed to get 5 prescriptions in one small pair of lenses. However my brain wasn't ready for the new and improved vision - I needed to take baby steps. Dr. Schletter made me another, simpler and perfect pair and told me to come back when I'm ready to address my farsightedness. My daughter's glasses are perfect and for the first time in a long time she can see clearly. One last thing: my previous optometrist charged me hundreds of dollars for "a redo" when my insurance company would have done it for free. Dr. Schletter and his wife educated me about my own insurance coverage and made sure I got the most for my money. I'm terribly grateful to them. They have two new loyal clients. read more

I love Dr Dossa. She is very warm and friendly. Very knowledgeable. She identified a problem with my eyes that my previous optometrist had missed, and referred me to to an ophthalmologist that prevented me from possibly going blind. Dr. Dosa was excellent. She spent a lot of time( 45 min), did a thorough exam, and explained my problem (cataracts) to me very clearly. She was much better than the ophthalmologist I had seen last week who spent 5 minutes with me and explained hardly anything. Dr. Dosa did not think a new prescription would help because of my cataracts. I've had problems with my vision for the last year, and now I finally understand what is wrong and what can be done about it. She has a delightful personality, is very competent, and I highly recommend her. read more

Lunettes du Monde has an *amazing* selection of frames. I've never seen so many different styles in one place -- everything from understated to wildly extravagant. They're very helpful and willing to let you try on lots of pairs until you find the right ones. Sadly, they wouldn't take my vision insurance, so I had to get my glasses elsewhere. read more

She is the BEST optometrist, hands down. She knows her stuff, listens to all your inquiries, explains everything in depth, and finds solutions based on specifically you (compared to other doctors who diagnose you based on the majority of people's problems). Do you want to know a secret? This place is wonderful! I have been wearing corrective lenses for the last 37 years, and have had about a BAZILLION eye doctors. Dr. Dosa has been my favorite. She actually spent time with me, discussing ALL of my options, and hesitations. And helped me actually understand JUST how I need, personally, so much more care and attention to my eyes and site than most people. And wow, I've NEVER seen 20/20. Ever. That was a revelation! She helped me get close to it, and explained how the space between the lenses and surface of the eye needs to be reconciled by the vision center in the brain. I mean, she knows what she's talking about. Her collection of frames are also wonderful. Unique for sure, and she helps you choose the perfect pair for your lenses as well as style. This place was horrible. We were invited in to look at frames and when we got inside one of the lady approached us and was extremely rude to me and my nieces. Updated Review. So I been going here for 3 years now and for the last two I been living outside of berkely. so it is out of my way, that just tells you just how much i love it here. I can't see myself going anywhere eles, I haven't met a eye doctor and been to a business who make sure you and your eyes are well taken care of. Over here, they really do everything can and they do it so well, so that you come in with a smile and you leave with a bigger smile. Dr. Dossa always has the best down to earth staff who makes you feel very welcome. They got the best Frames from all over, so the variety Is surely there!, for whatever look you are going for or simply showing off your personality for that unique look. Dr. Dossa went above and beyond the call of duty when I turned out to be in the very small percentage of folks who cannot successfully adapt to progressive lenses. Even after the lenses were manufactured, she went to bat for me, presenting my case to the lab, pushing through a number of bureaucratic roadblocks to get me exactly what I needed. I'm grateful for the extra effort she expended on my behalf, which wasn't easy. I should also add that Dr. Dossa is a master-diagnostician as well as a tireless worker, and now my single-focus lenses fit me to a tee. I haven't seen the world in focus in I don't know how long, and it's a relief. I highly recommend Dr. Dossa, especially for challenging cases like mine. read more

This place is tops: Dr Dossa is thorough, knowledgeable, and generous with her time (best optometry exam I've had in 10 years); frame selection is fantastic (even for narrow faces); assistant Bal provides extraordinary customer service - help with frame choice, proper fitting, and measurement for progressives (rare to meet someone in retail as skilled at customer service as she is). I walked away with two pairs of glasses I love. Though an expense, the superior quality is absolutely worth it. Just thought I would share my extremely unpleasant phone interaction. I called to inquire about a specific set of frames that I've been looking for and instead of telling me that her stock wasn't organized well enough to check for a particular model, she aggressively told me: "You know what, I'm not going to sit here all day and look through my stock for a certain pair. If you want to look for them you are going to have to come down here and do it yourself. I don't play that game." She could have given me the same information in a nice, courteous manner and I would already be in my car on my way there. But there is no way I would consider making such an important and large transaction with someone so unpleasant. Judging by other reviews here, I didn't just catch her on an off day. I came to Yelps to find the phone number because i misplaced it and saw some not so nice comments. We are going today for exam and selection - for both my wife and I. We have been traveling across the bridge from SF to Berkeley for years after accidentally stumbling into Lunettes du Monde (We call it Glasses du Monde) and I mean years - 8 years now. NO ONE does a better professional job, there are no better Optometrists living! He can put 7 or 8 prescriptions in the tiniest of lenses (he loves to tell of the Berkeley Professor who likes those itsi-bitsy John Lennon type round glasses with wire frames and the Prof. had difficult eyes, requiring a whole range of requirements) - I have 7 prescriptions - Dr. Scheletter saw that I needed not just for up close and reading, which is what I wanted, but for distance clarity too. He has literally invented a method of getting the most out of the available devices that test your eyes. They are former New Yorkers. If you do not like the way New Yorkers are you may find they are different than some Californians - but the Scheletters are not without their customer service charms. They have worked together for years and are cute together. They tried to retire years ago and found they did not like it so they came back to work. They do not NEED to be doing this but they do it our of a love of work and success - success meaning not money but putting the right glasses on people. The other thing is if you do not want the usual boring stuff you might find up the street at some chain or whatever - then these are your folk Glasses of the World in deed. I have purchased two and my wife has 4 from them. Mine both were made in the Netherlands because I seem to lean towards whatever they do. I like small wire frames myself and i do not like round or square the first ones i got were rectangle, much like a 35mm camera frame - and i say that is because i am a photographer. My wife likes very creative and artistic shapes - irregular angles and strong colored frames (though one of hers is actually kind of clear). Anyway. They rock. But, sorry if you want cheap go somewhere else - they have off the rack looking frames for cheapskates but look what do you wear more often than you glasses? Get something that makes a statement about who you are not some corner drug store readers. (They also DO have interesting "readers") But 'nuff said. Check them out. read more

I had an oppurtunity to buy two pairs of glasses from Lunettes du Monde in July. Although I had my old prescription, I decided to get my eyes checked with Dr. Faiza Dossa. She is not only an efficient Doctor, but a lively and caring person. I have had glasses for the last forty years & I go for an eye checkup almost every year. Most of the time, the checkup time is not more than half an hour to forty five minutes. To my surprise, Dr. Dossa took more than an hour to thoroughly examine my eyes. I've always had a hellish time ordering glasses, but I'm a huge fan of Lunettes du Monde. Unlike the other reviewers, I found that Phil and Delia were very knowledgeable about frames and RX and how to match them. I came in really concerned about how think my lenses would look (heavy prescription) and they were very conscientious of it when they helped me look. I also didn't have my eyes checked by them and didn't have a problem with a prescription from another doctor. Granted, I paid an arm and a leg, but I don't think I was ripped off. You pay for what you get. Now hopefully my glasses will come in in the 10 days they promised. read more

I live on the Peninsula and come here to choose my frames. Why? Because Lunettes du Monde has unusual high-quality frames I can't find anywhere else. I liked Dr. Schletter and his spouse but find Dr. Dossa to be friendlier. This year I got some to die for frames (once again) and couldn't be happier. I can't comment on Dr. Dossa because I see an optometrist not an optician. I have my lenses fitted by my optometrist who is always impressed by my frames. I strongly recommend you go elsewhere to get glasses. My experiences with the office previously was unfavorable: slow responses to my phone messages, long delays in getting lenses, wrong lenses; another long wait for the corrected lenses. I foolishly decided to try again. Big mistake! I found the office management to be even more disturbing than it was during my earlier encounters. On two occasions, I was told by Dr. Dossa that I would receive not only an itemized receipt, which I didn't get initially, but also a copy of my prescription and a refund for an order that was unsatisfactory to me. Hours after my second phone conversation with her, when I thought all was resolved, I received a phone call from the optician contradicting the messages I had received from Dr. Dossa. When I asked to speak to her in order to get clarity, the optician bluntly said "no" and hung up on me. Additionally, I had been told that I had time to decide on a frame they didn't have in stock (it took two weeks to arrive) but was charged for it immediately anyway. Then, although promised a refund, I waited over two weeks before receiving it, less a $35 restocking fee. Lack of courtesy, poor communication, and inconsistent messages between optometrist and optician will lead me never to set foot in this office again, and such practices should give you pause before you choose to do business with Lunettes du Monde Optometry yourself. read more

When it came to finding the right frames I end up having over 3 options to choose from, 2 of them were a bit pricey but with my Ins. coverage it end up being affordable. First, this is NOT a 24-hour Lenscrafters place; you won't get your glasses back the next day, and while the selection is impressive it is also expensive (which is why so many frames are locked up). But the good news is they take VSP, so if you have that vision insurance you'll get incredibly unusual frames and accurate lenses at a reasonable price. And if what you're looking for is a pair of glasses you won't see on anyone else, chances are this place is perfect for you. What they have is a small space jam-packed with frames from all over the world (hence "Lunettes du Monde," French for "glasses of the world"). The service is good, albeit not excellent; they sometimes forget to call you when your glasses are in, and they're closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (?). But Dr. Phil Schletter is the first optometrist to have figured out why I've tilted my head all my life--a form of amblyopia that's vertical, rather than horizontal like most cases of lazy eye. So don't come here for glasses in a hurry, but do come for unusual glasses that capture your personality. And be patient with they kind of service they provide. read more

I placed two calls to Lunettes. First the good call which was the second call and saved this review. The first call irritated me so much that after I hung up I decided to call back and complain and spoke with the nicest woman, who promised to see if what I was looking for was in their recent order and get back to me. Excellent customer service! The first call was answered by some guy whose name escapes me: I was looking for a specific frame from a specific manufacturer and called to ask if they had it in stock and was told that I could come in and look. When I said I was not in the area could they tell me if they had it in stock, I was told they had a inventory control system that couldn't look something up by name. The fellow was so completely unhelpful and clearly not all interested speaking with me or in my business that I was shocked. read more

We have been going to Lunettes Du Monde for many years - starting with Dr. Schletter and his wife and now with Dr. Dossa. Overall experience has been great under both owners and we highly recommend this optometrist if you like personalized, friendly attention, and service. The staff is very accomodating and helpful in finding the right frames each time. Recent visits have been especially memorable as Dr. Dossa diagnosed potential glaucoma developing in my wife's eyes. She sent her to an optomologist for an exam and was told that she was lucky to have discovered it! Lunettes du Monde has a stunning collection of styles and colors. That said, they are also unethical. I paid at least $100 extra for the Crizal protective coating on my prescription glasses. Crizal has a one-year guarantee--they will replace the lenses if they are scratched. My glasses were scratched when a friend's dog bit into them. Lunettes du Monde refused to replace them, saying the Crizal coating is only guaranteed against defective manufacture. I ended up spending $445.00 to replace the lenses. I have since looked at other vendors, and they all guarantee lenses for one year against scratches, for glasses with the Crizal coating. The man I had to deal with is a slime ball. I will never go back to Lunettes du Monde again. read more

The employees at Lunettes Du Monde seemed very friendly at first, until I started to pay attention and realized that the friendliness is fake, and all they wanted was my money. I've been in a few times, and each time witnessed shameless tag-teaming using classic sales tactics. They're always ready with an upsell, and will talk around the options to confuse the patient and try to squeeze as much money out of them as possible instead of being clear about the options and what's medically needed. I brought a friend in with me for my follow-up without telling him my impression, and he kept glancing sideways at me as they did their sales dance, like, "Are they serious?" and confirmed to me afterward that the whole thing was as creepy as my first impressions led me to think. Disgusting. I understand that you're trying to build up your business, but this is a shameful way to do it. I hope that you grow to be better health providers, and drop the slimy sales tactics. read more
