Dr. Dossa did such a good job of complete eye exam. She took a photo of the retina of my eyes so that she can monitor the health of my retina. She is extremely patient with my requests of trying different brands of contacts and willing to order the trials for me to try on to make sure the contacts will fit my eyes. Also she uses a patient port online so that i can send messages to her, download my prescriptions, make an appointment online etc. The staff in her store is extremely friendly too. read more

It was in the middle of the pandemic and the rubber nose pad fell off of my one pair of glasses that had my current correct prescription. Every other optometry shop that I called was by appointment only and they would promise me a call back to schedule an appointment and that call never came. I guess a nose pad replacement was not profitable enough for them. I was in a panic because it hurt and a taped on cotton ball was not a winning look on zoom calls with clients and prospects. Desperate, I called Lunettes du Monde for the first time and I explained my dilemma to Bal who told me to come right away. When I got there, she took my glasses and worked on them for 20 minutes - finding n nose pad that fit and affixing it to my glasses. I was so happy that I almost cried. Fast forward to a few months ago when I needed to update my glasses and I went right back to Lunettes du Monde and worked with Bal. To my delight, my glasses ( 3 pair) were ready a week early. The glasses are perfect. Their lens cutters are great. We don't buy from businesses. We buy from people. In my time of need, when I was not yet a Lunette du Monde client, Bal treated me with compassion, kindness, and respect. I'll never forget it. And I'll never go anywhere else for my eyeglasses...and my nose pads:). read more

My husband and I recently had our progressive lenses replaced in existing frames and received excellent care from optician Bal. It can be challenging to get progressives to fit just right, and Bal went the extra mile to make sure we were completely satisfied with our new lenses. I can always find stylish frames at Lunettes du Monde, which is a rarity among VSP-authorized providers (and I haven't found another VSP provider in the East Bay with the same breadth and quality of brands). I had put off getting new frames due to COVID, but I am glad that I proceeded this week. They are taking precautions to make clients/patients feel comfortable by limiting number of people in the showroom and careful attention to COVID protocols. I have worn eyeglasses my entire adult life. This is hands down the best optical shop I have ever used. Dr. Dossa is very nice and accommodating of patient needs. She provides good advice for your eye concerns. Her optometry staff are excellent. Val is especially fun to work with because she has excellent taste and will give you an honest opinion about whether a frame is a hit or a miss for your face. Their selection of frames is excellent. I wish they carried more frames by Etnia Barcelona because I love their style and comfort, but their selection of that frame maker is rather limited. This is not my first visit. Each time every one is SO nice. The receptionist Val greets you , very sweet lady. Every one is wearing masks. There is antibacterial at the door for you coming in & leaving. Dr. Dossa is very knowledgeable & has all the latest equipment for testing & assessing your eye health. The selection of glasses are amazing. The glasses are hand picked by Dr Dossa from many different countries she travels to. That is the reason I initially went there. First of all an optometrist is not a doctor, so I don't understand why the owner is called Dr. She used to have a place on Shattuck Avenue. I cannot recall if under same name. However, it closed down. I don't know why. However, I bought a very expensive pair of glasses from her that I really liked some years ago. I later took them in for a repair, and when I called to pick them up, she told me "we don't keep glasses after a month. If you don't pick them up within the month, we are not responsible for them." I asked why she didn't call me and what had she done with did with my glasses. She said she threw them away. I never received a call from her asking me to come in or she'd throw away my glasses. The glasses had cost me around 1000-1200 and that was years ago. I would not cross her doorstep again. Go elsewhere. I never got my glasses back. I have other pairs over 10 years old, but miss that frame a lot, as it takes a while for me to find a good fit, size and style. I hold onto frames a long time when I find something I like. Ms. Dosa --you will recall my GREEN frame I'm sure and what end it came to. Did you sell it again? It was a very expensive frame as were my high index lenses for high astigmatism. read more

I happened upon this shop when I first moved to Berkeley six months ago. I live just around the block and LOVE supporting "local." I'm a geek that way. I wandered in with a friend on a day when I really wasn't shopping for eyewear and found a pair that I really LOVED. I never forgot them. Although I have 27 pairs of glasses (i collect them instead of trinkets when traveling) - this pair was/IS going to be #28. I returned to the shop a month later to BUY the $600+ glasses, but the female (co-owner I suppose, Dr. Schletter's wife) would hardly allow me to touch them. She allowed me to put them on then grabbed them back and tucked them away. I found the behavior odd, but allowed it to not alter my day. I did NOT purchase. But I LIKED the glasses. So a month later, I went BACK to buy them. She was even MORE rude and insulting...and treated me as though I were a pauper, really... An unwelcome guest in HER home. It was if she felt (you liked them but couldn't afford them the first time - so why are you here, again. Either buy them or get out). [...a little bit of back story. I am a woman who is INTENTIONALLY understated - but have done 'very well" in my life and career. I can literally afford to buy an entire CASE of this store's OVERpriced eyewear if I want to, in cash - but you'd never know it by looking at me. I'd asked for a discount/price match before just to see who I was 'dealing with'. She RUDELY said 'no.'] lol. Anyway, last week - after thinking about these very unique metal frames - I encouraged myself that "perhaps she was having a bad day those other two (2) times." I really WANTED to buy those frames. So, I went in with a thousand dollars fresh out of the nearby ATM - and witnessed the woman treat an Asian customer like ICE. The man was taking a photograph of a pair of glasses that he liked as we often do. She literally SHOO'D him OUT OF THE SHOP - and then scowled and turned to me and said (quote) "they come in here to STEAL ideas...then go off and make cheap knockoffs to sell." Now - as someone who has owned a marketing agency - what I know for sure is that SHE IS AFRAID. ...concerned about people remembering the frames, comparing prices, and buying cheaper - perhaps ONLINE. That is the OLD SCHOOL way of thinking. In this new age of SOCIAL MEDIA and the Internet -she will not be able to compete as she perhaps once did, 'back in the day". What now wins and maintains customers is 'personality', warmth, and CUSTOMER SERVICE. That is something with which the internet can 'never' compete. What was more troublesome is that Dr. Schletter witnessed all this - and said NOTHING. I will now find my awesome adorable glasses someplace else. I just can't do business with that kind of energy. Great if you have no problems - -- but if there are issues, expect to be stonewalled, told to get used to it, told to wait, told it's your fault. Great selection of frames, terrible customer service and I don't think that the the Dr. can optometristize his way out of a paper bag. When my glasses came, my eyes felt strained. Letters and numbers (digital particular) were blurry. I got headaches from eye strain. I had gone with something called "prism" that he recommended strongly for me, even though I saw zero difference when he used the sample on me. When I took them back, he insisted that this prescription was correct (God FORBID he be..gasp.. WRONG!). He said it would take a few more weeks at least for my eyes to adjust and was basically dismissive of me. I never did adjust, so I took them back for the 2nd time and after much insistence, he very, very reluctantly agreed to re-do them and take out the "Prism" part he had so heavily recommended. Well, that was done but there was no difference. -- I sill had blurry vision and headaches. I never went back because dealing with them was such an effort. You know, it must be my fault or I'm just a picky customer because I CAN'T SEE, but whatever. I suffered with those glasses for 2 freaking years! 2 FREAKING YEARS is a long time when your prescription isn't correct. When I could finally see an optometrist again, I went someplace else. She took a look at my glasses and said no wonder I had problems, the correction for astigmatism was way, way off. The headaches and blurred vision were due to the fact that astigmatism correction was way too strong. She gave me the correct prescription and I've been a happy camper with crisp vision and headache free ever since. read more

Husband and wife team do their optometry thing in the 4th Street groovy zone. The doc gave me a great eye exam, while wifey tried to sell me the moon in pink if I wanted it - for a price. But I was looking for contact lenses... So I get some sample lenses and give 'em a go - but, I can't wear the pesky things - and it sets me back $250. In the meantime, I've cracked the lenses in my RayBans and happen to have another broken pair with intact lenses. So - I trot 'em down to my "friendly local optometrist" to see if they can swap out the lenses. Delia tells me "it's a very complicated process," then proceeds to ignore me and put away glasses in a near empty store. Her husband is doing an eye exam so I wait to see what happens next. After 15 minutes of sitting in the store watching Delia put glasses away, tidy up and remind everyone within earshot that she's been to the Paris eyewear show, blah blah blah. The doc comes out, asks me if I'm being helped to which I answer "Not at all." He shoots his wife a look, grabs my glasses, pops in the lens in under 30 seconds and hands me back my glasses. So much for the complicated process - and so much for any of my future business. read more

Amazing selection. Truly horrible customer service. Not only won't the owner unlock the cases (not even one at a time, not even if she's standing right next to you) she won't let you even TOUCH a pair that she hasn't chosen for you herself. She does have a great eye for what suits one's face. I will give her that. But it's unbelievably frustrating to be in the midst of hundreds of the coolest glasses WITH a pocketful of cash and ready to buy, just to be treated like a child who may look but not touch. I know some reviewers think she thinks everyone is a thief, but my impression is that she's just super controlling. If you don't mind letting your mom pick out your glasses for you, you might love this place. If not, go somewhere else. read more

One star means... I can't post with 0 star. It's a husband and wife store. We went to the store for the oliver people frame. We asked if they were closing, the husband came and said no. So we asked to try one frame. At first, I felt very uncomfortable why he didn't answer our questions about any info of the series name or the series number of the frame. Without his answer, we had to check the detail by ourselves. But when we were trying to check the temple of the frame to see the size of the bridge and the lens rim, the husband SUDDENLY, RUDELY grabbed the frame away and said we want to check the price. He was so rude and quick that we didn't notice what's happening there. Then I realized that he thought we were checking the series number or price of the frame so that we could buy it online. Well, you open a store, you display the items on the shelf, but you don't want people to look and try just because you think they won't buy????!!!! I tell you, customer has right to try then decide to buy or not! If you want to avoid people trying your items, you put a sign outside of your store saying: GET OUT OF HERE IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHETHER YOU WILL SPEND MONEY HERE! I first went to Lunettes Du Monde last year. Since my initial visit the shop has changed ownership. I went in a couple weeks ago for the yearly exam and a new set of glasses. My two experiences were like night and day! The new owner, Dr. Faiza Dossa, has really turned this place around. She's steadily bringing the practice into this century by digitizing the patient records - previously everything was done on paper! Dr. Dossa's staff is super friendly and were really helpful and patient with me as I took FOREVER to decide on frames. They weren't scared to offer opinions and it felt like I was shopping with my girlfriends. My first visit left me feeling a little out of place, like I wasn't the shop's target audience; the new staff totally erased my discomfort. My first visit, under the previous owners, somehow went horribly awry. First, I was never asked whether I wanted glasses or contacts so they just gave me the glasses exam. When I asked about contacts I hadn't used before because my eyes dry out like crazy, I could see the annoyance on the face of the lady behind the counter. I had to pay out of pocket for the contacts exam because he'd already given me the glasses exam and my insurance only pays for 1 a year. After being sent home with several samples of contacts, I was never given instructions on how to actually make a decision and let them know which to order for me. I heard nothing until I called and asked if I should schedule another appt or what. When I finally figured out what to do, I went in and even had a picture of the contacts I wanted. Still, I ended up with a year supply of the wrong brand of contacts AND had to pay full price after being sold on a rebate that I couldn't file myself. I ended up spending almost 3x as much as I should have! Dr. Dossa buying this place was the best possible thing that could happen for this business. She made my most recent visit an absolute pleasure and I'll be happily returning. read more

TL; DR: Beautiful shop and the best optometrist I've seen to-date. Thorough in her diagnosis and talks through the procedure to ensure that you're aware of what she's doing at each step. Follows-up to make sure things are working out. Lunettes du Monde is now run by Dr. Dossa and she is by far the best optometrist I have ever seen. She spent over two hours carefully and thoroughly examining me and my husband, leaving no stone unturned in making sure that neither of us was at risk for any eye issues. The thing that impressed me most about Dr. Dossa is that she's really knowledgable and shares her vast knowledge on eyes and their impact on well-being. At the same time, she doesn't do so in a pedantic or patronizing manner but rather with the warmth and patience of a good friend who just wants to look out for you. Most optometrists that I've seen are usually "efficient" as in they look at your eyes for 10 mins, write you a prescription and then pass you off to their salesperson who then tries to push a five-hundred dollar frame on you. Then they usually charge you an exorbitant amount for the exam or the products because, surprise-surprise, they weren't covered by your insurance. That average optometrist doesn't follow-up to make sure that your contacts are working out well for you and usually doesn't want to see you until your next annual exam. There was none of that with Dr. Dossa. At the beginning of our visit, she took the time to explain exactly what she was going to do as well as my options in terms of what's covered by my insurance and what I could do optionally that is not covered by my insurance. That was extremely refreshing and made the entire visit a pleasant, anxiety-free experience. At the end of the visit, she gave my some very useful tips on what contact lenses work better with eye makeup as well as samples of newer (and cheaper) lenses to try on and follow-up with her in a week to give her feedback on what works best for me. For my husband who suffers from horrible eye allergies, she talked him through a simple regimen to help him manage his allergies with less medication while prescribing him the allergy drops just in case. Finally, it goes without saying that Lunettes du Monde is located in an excellent location by all of the 4th street shops and her staff members are really nice (and funny) people. read more

I've been, and now continue to be, a patient here for over 10 years. While I will miss Deilia and Dr Schletter, Dr Dossa and her staff welcomed this returning patient by locating my paper file and transitioned to the new electronic system. During the search for my paper file, I received timely phone updates. The email reminders and emailed receipts are a welcomed change. The electronic documents make for dealing with insurance much faster. Where patient intake was always done by Dr Schletter, I met Bill who walked me through my paperwork and forms. When it came to the frames, we talked about what I liked and disliked. He's attentive and seeks to understand your particular style. Once Dr Dossa was ready, we started the exam in the all too familiar exam chair. Dr Dossa was very thorough and explained every step of the tests. Even though I've been only seen for the first time, she made me feel as though I've been her patient for years. When I was done with the exam, Bill already had a tray of potential frames ready for me to try out which shortened the process. Really incredible selection -- even better than in the Castro. I've never seen such crazy frames with such lovely designer frames, and in such quantities. 2 STAR reduction for having all of the glasses in locked glass cases. This is extremely annoying and the man will only get a few out at a time. You try on 3-4 and only then will he let you try others. He's not huffy puffy about it but could be more accomodating. Plus, this takes so much extra time. I didn't find a frame for myself -- because I was short on time -- but I may go back and try more. P.S. They won't accept your information from another eye doctor to put in your glasses order. They insist on doing their own exam because they are "not simply opticians". read more

And then, out came the drawers of frames. I was confident that I had access to any style available. They also seemed to sincerely enjoy helping me. I came to leave a review after my great experience with getting prescription glasses at Lunettes du Monde, and was very surprised by the reviews here. My experience was great, from the eye examination to the final product. I've been trying to get glasses that feel right for 20 years, since I was 15. I have a difficult prescription -- one eye is nearsighted, and one eye is farsighted. Over the years, I've used UC Berkeley optometry lab, Kaiser, Costco, LensCrafters, and even shops in Hong Kong. Every pair of glasses I've ever gotten have felt uncomfortable and my eyes never seem to adjust. Even when my vision was "clear" with them on and I can read the smallest line on the chart, for all these years glasses have only made my eyes feel so tired. I think Dr. Schletter at Lunettes du Monde finally got it right. He took his time to make me look away, and relax my eyes before having me read the letters -- apparently I've always done the eye test with my eyes strained, so no wonder the glasses would come out straining. He did a test that confirmed I needed a "prism" prescription. To my surprise, he prescribed a lens for my nearsighted eye that was only -0.50 diopters, whereas every eye exam I've had was always -1.50 to -2.25 because I would always strain my eyes to accommodate to the lens in the machine because I was always straining both my eyes to see out of the farsighted eye. (This would make sense to any of you who have studied or know about optometry in any way). My vision now is so comfortable and crisp, even when I turn my head from side to side. Dr. Schletter also adds a Hoya E3 coating and I think he uses Carl Zeiss high index lenses, and grinds your prescription with "high definition" digitally controlled precision. Look up those online and you'll see what they're about. I will always ask for those even if I get glasses from someone else. As to the customer service comments, here's my take -- it's true that Dr. Schletter's wife Delia did keep all the frames in locked glass cabinets, and was careful to lock them when she was done pulling frames for you. But it didn't offend or surprise me that she did that -- their frames are mostly from independent eyewear makers that run $500 to $1500 a pair. For fun, she showed me a pair of German frames that were solid sterling silver for $1500. If I were at a jewelry shop, I wouldn't expect to have all their pieces out for me to walk up and to try on, so why would I expect any differently here? Delia's input was very helpful and appreciated. After trying on a few dozen frames of hugely varying types, I ended up getting a pair of "computer glasses" for work with Lerocher frames and a pair of anytime glasses with Kamuro frames. All I had to do was wrinkle my nose and frown at a pair I didn't like, and Delia was able to predict what I would like and would pull out collections of frames that weren't even in the display case because she didn't have room for them. I hadn't thought of discount shopping for the frames online, but I just looked up those brands now, and I couldn't find an online retailer for Lerocher, and Kamuro's online prices are just as much as at Lunettes du Monde! I don't know about you, but with the "full service" model dying in most other parts of retail, I really appreciate full service touch from Lunettes du Monde. They have my highest recommendation. read more

I would be very cautious about ordering anything out of the usual from these folks. I have now waited 8 weeks for my glasses (the first order was botched by the lab). It seems that they are not experienced enough to recommend the correct frames for prescription as my glasses came back with lenses that were 1/4" thick at the edges. Their concern while wordy, seems to yield little action. I have been advised that the glasses will be ready this Thursday, but they have promised deliveries before and not come through. I will update this review once I hear back from them at the end of this week. It took about two months, but I did get my glasses and I am very pleased. IC Berlin is the best! read more

I was referred to Dr. Schletter by a good friend who has been seeing the Doctor for 20 years. I was in search of a second opinion for my 10-year old, as I was not certain that the prescription she had from her (now former) optometrist was helping her enough - or even correct. I was very impressed with both the doctor and his wife. Maybe it's because I grew up on the east coast, but I felt instantly at ease with their style. Dr. Schletter completely focused on my daughter and in one session got to the source of her vision problems. Then he examined me and fixed my eyes too. I had thought I only needed glasses for reading and was surprised to learn that I had, over the years become slightly farsighted. The first pair of glasses he made for me were hard for my brain to adjust to. The Doctor really is a magician - somehow his managed to get 5 prescriptions in one small pair of lenses. Dr. Schletter made me another, simpler and perfect pair and told me to come back when I'm ready to address my farsightedness. My daughter's glasses are perfect and for the first time in a long time she can see clearly. One last thing: my previous optometrist charged me hundreds of dollars for "a redo" when my insurance company would have done it for free. They're very helpful and willing to let you try on lots of pairs until you find the right ones. Sadly, they wouldn't take my vision insurance, so I had to get my glasses elsewhere. read more
