I've never had a more thorough eye exam. I used to go elsewhere for one, but once I had an exam from them I have never gone anywhere else. I have a high prescription and there are some eye health concerns that can come along with that. They always are tracking and educating me about them. I've had to get a recheck once, and it was free. I had to send back a pair, it was free. I have had optometrists in the past who just say "oh you'll get used to it." There is never any fuss about it at UCB.They want to get it right for you. Because they are educating new optometrists, they work very hard at teaching them how to use insurance to get the cheapest lenses. I've gotten lenses that cost half of what they did anywhere else. They just cannot be beat! read more

Many years ago I went to a recommended optometry shop and I did not receive the level of care there that I have received at UC Berkeley Optometry ever since. Way impressed with the care and attention provided during an annual eye examination! This was my first time visiting UC Berkeley Optometry at the Tang Center (after nearly a decade between eye exams). I was nervous about what the visit would entail, but was immediately reassured by the staff's friendly and competent manner. The optometrist explained everything she was doing in real time; which eliminated the anxiety and uncertainty I had carried with me to the appointment. After we completed the examination, a student intern assisted me in a frames fitting. She patiently walked me down row after row of frames to help me identify a pair that would fit my face and be comfortable for long-term wear. Overall, I was very impressed and will definitely be better about my annual exams now that I know how smooth the process is! read more

great place if you like a run-around. Bought prescription glasses and paid almost $800 for them. They were to be ready in two weeks. They promised to notify me upon their arrival. I contacted them at the two week mark and they explained that the glasses were in transit and it might be 48 hours. Now the staff tell me it will be another two weeks but no promises. tl;dr: Note from this patient to Dr. Jung: As a doctor, it is your responsibility to explain the process to the patient, rather than silence them with your attitude. I really wanted to like my first-time experience here but unfortunately the visit was slow and full of technical difficulties, a negative experience exacerbated by some passive aggressiveness from the doctor herself which left me quite astonished and frustrated. The doctor is the reason for this 2-star review. I came here for a comprehensive eye exam and brought my current contact prescription. Dr. Liandra Jung helped me get settled but could not boot up the computer in her room. After 5-10 minutes of waiting, she transferred me to the care of a student, who did a mostly-good eye exam: The process took quite a while as the student left the room a few times to "check on something", and then fumbled a little bit with the eye exam. Honestly though, she's still practicing to get her degree, so it is not a big deal. That being said, my parking of 1.5 hours was getting close to expiring. Dr. Jung said we could reschedule the dilation for another time. Great! However, the exit process was extremely delayed as neither Dr. Jung nor student could get the printer to work. Then the computer froze. At this point, I left the center to put more time into the meter because they couldn't have me leave without getting the printouts. I added the max time (2 hours), thinking that this would put us back on track for the regular appointment plans. However, upon coming back ~2 minutes later, Dr. Jung said she was "sorry but could not accommodate the dilation exam at this time." This was surprising. The clinic could not have scheduled another appointment in the ~20 minutes from when we first realized we had no time for the dilation. Some more explanation was surely necessary. Maybe she could have acknowledged the clinic was running behind schedule anyway, and would not have been able to accommodate the dilation even if there was no parking expiration issue. However, I did not want to press this logic upon her, as it is the clinic's choice for who to serve. In any case, I got a lot of passive aggressiveness and attitude from her which made me quite annoyed. As a doctor it is your responsibility to explain the process to the patient, rather than silence them with your attitude. Hopefully next time, at the dilation, there will be more professionalism and calmly-guided treatment of patients. read more

A month after I had the eye exam and order my prescription glasses, I haven't heard anything from the clinic. I called and was told that they will let me know what happen to my glasses the coming today. I had never hard back from them. 3 weeks later I called, which is today they put me on hold. then Don answered the phone and told me that my glasses came yesterday and broken to pieces. I m not sure how it can be such a coincidence that my glasses "came" yesterday. they said that the frame had lenses that is too small and then they had to put another lenses that is too big that they had to force it in and therefore it broke apart. no one had called me and informed me about the condition. Glasses is a health item concern and I needed for my driving. It is a safety issues, and I do not recommend this place to any one. I am new to Berkeley and needed an eye exam. My neighbor recommended this group and I was delighted with my experience. Everyone was very helpful from the front desk people to the student and doctor. Jerry had a fantastic manner and was thorough in all the tests. He will be an asset to any practice he joins in the future. Dr. Moy checked his work and was great at explaining a few nuances she saw in the results. I will be visiting the main optometry office for my glasses as they have a wider selection and the brand I like. No doubt everyone will be wonderful there as well! read more

Incompetent system with very poor customer service. I am trying schedule my first appointment as a new customer. I called 510-642-2020 and got an outgoing message directing me to the website. I went to the website, clicked "Make and Appointment" and got: Online Appointments are temporarily unavailable. We are upgrading our online appointment system so that we can provide you with better service. In the meantime, you can make an appointment by phone... I called the phone number two more times. Each time, the system left me on hold for 10 minutes then disconnected me. Please correct your outgoing telephone message to state 1. online appointments are unavailable, and 2. This is specially concerning the Eye Store within the Tang Eye Center (Only) - I will NEVER buy my prescription glasses from them again. Back in October I ordered new glasses with my brand new prescription and with insurance. nearly $400 later I was told my order would take 2-4 weeks to fill. 4 weeks later they arrived and prescription order was off (badly). I now had to wait an additional 2 weeks to get a consultation,. They bodged the order and was willing to have it refilled, but it would take a "few more weeks" and it would cost me only an additional $20-40 over the original $400. Great. Now right after Xmass (yeah, Xmass) I get a frantic call from them (not the same person I had a consolation with btw) telling me they had finally sent in my glass order and they were "confused" at which order was correct. Perturbed, I corrected them and they should be filling the new order and not the original (which was incorrect and was the reason for the new order). Now I should have just cancelled the order here because it was pretty clear how incompetent this place is, but it was Xmass and I didn't. The new year comes (and 2 and half months later) along and I get message on my phone about my order: Hey, we're confused about your order and we think something off about it, please call us. I spent the next 2 hours calling and never getting threw to anyone, so I left message telling them to please cancel my order and please refund me. Just over another week goes by, I assume the order is cancelled but no, it wasn't and I get another frantic called and message about "what order you talking about cancelling?" message. Holy shit, I then spend the next 2 hours trying to talk to a human being at the center but keep getting shunted off to leave a message. After that 2 hours I'm pissed as hell and leave a rather rude message (I'm not proud of it btw) and again ask to have my order cancelled and refund me. Another week goes by and no indication that my order was cancelled let alone a refund having been given and I'm dreading that I'm going to have call them and play hours of phone tag only to leave another rude pissed off message. but low and behold I get a call one evening and spend the next hour retelling all of the above to manager and pleading for them cancel my order and refund me. I'm told they will have to get back to me on this. Another week goes by and I get yet again another call form the center, but another person (I think I've dealt in total about 9 different folks from start to end here) and please call them. I do, and of course can't get threw to a human being. Instead of trying back, I go to message and again leave a message about being contacted and please kill my order and refund me. This was last Monday and so far no new messages, no cancellation of order let alone a refund here. Obviously I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN and am perplexed at how a place like stay's in business with horrid customer service. The lack of communication both within the organization and with me has been nothing short of unprofessional from near the start to today. As such I can only suggest if you need new glasses, go any place else and avoid the shop like you would the plague. read more

I've gone to the Tang Eye Center for the past four years since I was a graduate student at Cal. Now that I started working, I was given an option to find another place but I opted Tang still. General concern I hear, which I also had, was that you deal with student doctors here. I personally like that better because they are careful and attentive. The way they interact and report to the doctors-supervisors make me feel at ease because the student doctors seem comfortable to freely give their own diagnosis or findings. Aside from that, I always get great offers and discounts on glasses and contact lenses. And whenever I call about an immediate concern I have, their front desk people are quick to address my immediate concerns. read more

I had a very thorough examination as well informative experience . It'd been about 4 years since I last visited UC Optometry but my first to Tang. I appreciated both the clinical as well informative info as always . I have a nevis on the back of my right eye . It was checked thoughtfully and completely by both the student as well the resident ophthalmologist . I left satisfied as well elated that neither the nevis had grown and the increase in my prescription was minimal. I highly recommend the 'services' offered as well the information given . My go to is the TANG Eye Center at UC Berkeley. The staff, especially Alice at the front desk, is cordial, professional and goes out of their way to find your information and process your paperwork. The clinicians are proficient, and it is great to know I am helping students learn, AND the doctor always checks everything out, assuring the outcome is correct. I love getting my eyes checked here! This year they even called, reminded me to come in! Very thorough, friendly and timely. I recommend the Tang Eye Center to everyone! I need only reading glasses and while they're perfectly happy to prescribe me some (which would be more costly) they're also perfectly happy to not. Walked-in last Friday (4/13) in the late afternoon for an eyeglass repair and despite having multiple clients ahead of me they were great to periodically check in with me and once it was my time to be served they went above and beyond. One of my lens' needed to be shaved down to fit in the frame and even though I could not get that done at the Tang Eye Center location, the team was adamant of providing a short-term fix to problem. They stayed past business hours to ensure that I would have my glasses for the time being until I went to the Essilor Center on campus that has the specialist required for my problem. I am so grateful for Dr. Green and the 3rd year intern Juliana at Tang Eye Center. I was impressed with the care and kindness - and results offered. I thought I had a scratched cornea- but with a good look, found a mite (!) was embedded on my lid, causing a good deal of discomfort. It was removed easily and I felt immediate results. I really enjoy being attended to at teaching institutions. I feel that the student interns are always diligent, professional, and thorough. The supervisory physicians do a phenomenal job of overseeing their students as medical caregivers. Patients derive the benefits of being seen by at least two medical professionals so subtle issues are rarely overlooked. THEY LOST MY CONTACTS. I had a contact lens appointment where my prescription changed days before the Tang Eye Center shutdown due to covid-19. Days before I had just gotten contacts, Acuvue Moist -1.50, that were unopened and I was instructed to leave them at the front desk so I can exchange them for my new contacts at my return appointment. I even asked if I should hold onto them and the receptionist said that it would be better if I left them with her. BIG MISTAKE. Before my return appointment, they shut the Tang office down, and the 2 receptionist I communicated with and know my situation no longer work there. I have been in (poor) communication with the Meredith Morgan office trying to get my contacts back (or a credit for them). They say that because they have no evidence that I left the contacts, there is nothing they can do. They have been very hard to get a hold of and not understanding of my situation at all. They have too many clients to care about mistakes that they make. I liked supporting UC, but the customer service is too poor for me to trust doing business with them. It was a very positive experience! The staff at the Tang Eye Center were very welcoming and helpful in ensuring my vision needs were met.

There is a cost to the Tang Center being part of an optometry school. For normal, standard eye diagnostics and prescriptions, it's fine. However, my wife had a problem there that needs to be published. This particular event happened several years ago and thus may not reflect the current staff. She went to Tang to get a full eye exam. One of the tests involved the field of view (i.e. can you see out of all parts of your eye. It's a map of the retina response, I think. I'm not an expert so I'm not entirely sure what it means.) The student apparently did not know exactly how the machine worked; she was adjusting things constantly. When we got the results, one of my wife's eyes indicated a loss of vision of about 50%. The optometrist vetted this result at the time. This result frightened my wife because she had had metastatic cancer and if some metastatic cells had surrounded the optic nerve, it may indicate by squeezing the optic nerve and reducing her vision. I looked at the results and told her that if she had lost half her vision in one eye, she would have noticed that, and therefore the results were suspect. We went back to Tang and when the optometrist saw the results, she okayed a retest. The retest showed normal vision. Now, as I mentioned above, normal prescriptions are done without problems. But should an abnormal test result occur, it would be a good idea to get retested. read more

Had a pretty good experience here. Making an appointment request was easy and several confirmation texts were helpful. The front desk/cashiers were helpful and polite. My intern, Jennifer, was kind and courteous and VERY, VERY, VERY thorough. Be advised: the optometry interns do pretty much everything with one or two checks with the attending. It can kind of make you feel like a lab rat, but hey it's practical hands on experience and actually beat the cost of another VSP provider or even Costco. Their facilities and equipment are all new, clean, or upkept and I had no complaints. Be prepared to spend 1.5-2 hours here though; their system is a bit weird. 10 people scheduled at the same time and then all taken in at the same time; this can back up some testing procedures. All in all, recommended. Hope my contacts come in a couple of weeks with no problems! My only gripe is having to put for $3.25 an hour/2 hour max parking outside the Tang. read more

I had such a good experience here. My first time getting a pair of glasses as well! They gave me a thorough eye exam and were extremely helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. Picking out my first pair of glasses was hard but the students that helped me were very thorough and nice, giving me tons of tips, advice, and suggestions with color, frame type, size, facial consideration, and more. I can not recommend them enough! Their amiable personalities make them easy to talk to and ask questions. My only qualm would concern scheduling, it is slightly difficult sometimes to get a hold of them, but it is only a minor inconvenience and they are, for the most part, understanding about appointments. However, those in the optical department and the students running the eye tests are wonderful! read more
