What a lovely experience! I am always a bit anxious when visiting a new doctor, but was so thankful for my experience with Dr. Dossa and and the opticians at Lunettes du Monde Optometry. Dr. Dossa is wonderful, and treated my acute eye symptoms with the urgency that was needed. She was kind, knowledgeable and extremely helpful by referring me to an opthamologist for a possible surgical remedy. Her staff is lovely as well. Ok they did make a refund. Owner is asking to me to remove my negative review. I can understand from her perspective she wants success of her business. But I cannot forget or delete what I have experienced with them at all. At least she accepted to make a refund and I don't have to get upset every time I wear my glasses. This is something good after all. I can say after all those upsets I will not return and I can recommend people to please be aware they might not be easy to work with if you will have problem with their service. She was very nice at first and became nice again at the end but it would have been better for everyone if she had been, in this case, more interested in customer satisfaction. read more

TL; DR: Best optometrist I've seen to-date. Thorough in her diagnosis and talks through the procedure to ensure that you're aware of what she's doing at each step. Follows-up to make sure things are working out. Dr. Dossa is by far the best optometrist I have ever seen. She spent over two hours carefully and thoroughly examining me and my husband, leaving no stone unturned in making sure that neither of us was at risk for any eye issues. The thing that impressed me most about Dr. Dossa is that she's really knowledgable and shares her vast knowledge on eyes and their impact on well-being. At the same time, she doesn't do so in a pedantic or patronizing manner but rather with the warmth and patience of a good friend who just wants to look out for you. Most optometrists that I've seen are usually "efficient" as in they look at your eyes for 10 mins, write you a prescription and then pass you off to their salesperson who then tries to push a five-hundred dollar frame on you. Then they usually charge you an exorbitant amount for the exam or the products because, surprise-surprise, they weren't covered by your insurance. That average optometrist doesn't follow-up to make sure that your contacts are working out well for you and usually doesn't want to see you until your next annual exam. There was none of that with Dr. Dossa. At the beginning of our visit, she took the time to explain exactly what she was going to do as well as my options in terms of what's covered by my insurance and what I could do optionally that is not covered by my insurance. That was extremely refreshing and made the entire visit a pleasant, anxiety-free experience. At the end of the visit, she gave my some very useful tips on what contact lenses work better with eye makeup as well as samples of newer (and cheaper) lenses to try on and follow-up with her in a week to give her feedback on what works best for me. For my husband who suffers from horrible eye allergies, she talked him through a simple regimen to help him manage his allergies with less medication while prescribing him the allergy drops just in case. Finally, it goes without saying that she's in an excellent location by all of the 4th street shops and her staff members are really nice (and funny) people. read more

I got my glasses from the previous owners at Lunette du Monde Optometry. I paid almost a $1000 for a pair of glasses and set of lenses for another frame i used for my computer work. The Swiss made advertised frames as unbreakable broke and the past owners made no attempt to get the company to replace the frames for free. So I ended up paying another $200 for new frames. The temples were fine. I walked in last month and saw Dr. Dossa, as the new owner. She went upstairs and pick up my file and saw that the frame was already broken once and called the company and GOT them to replace the frame for free. She is my hero and if I was not moving out of Berkeley i would have had her as my new optometrist. She went out of her way to reason with the company to step up and replace my frame at no cost. Dr. Dosa was excellent. She spent a lot of time( 45 min), did a thorough exam, and explained my problem (cataracts) to me very clearly. She was much better than the ophthalmologist I had seen last week who spent 5 minutes with me and explained hardly anything. Dr. Dosa did not think a new prescription would help because of my cataracts. I've had problems with my vision for the last year, and now I finally understand what is wrong and what can be done about it. She has a delightful personality, is very competent, and I highly recommend her. read more

I have been happily seeing Dr. Faiza Dossa for many years. I have a degenerative corneal condition and had been under the care of other Optometrists but Dr. Dossa took my condition on as a personal challenge and hasn't stopped since. She is extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to her patience and practice. Several years ago she left my prior Optometry and Ophthalmology Center in Oakland to start her practice in Berkeley and I had to follow her knowing that I would not get better care from anyone else. She is continuously trying different techniques and options to improve my eye health and my eye sight. I had a great experience buying new frames here! When I walked in, Sylvia said she'd pull some frames for me. At first I was hesitant--I usually like to look around and don't want a salesperson pushing frames on me. But I'm soooo glad I went with it. Without telling her anything about what kinds of glasses I like, if I wanted something conservative or funky, Sylvia nailed it both in terms of what would look good on me but also my taste. The individual attention and quality of service I received felt like I'd hired a high-end personal style consultant! Sylvia sat me down with the ~15 frames she'd picked out, helped me try them on and gave me honest feedback. She had an efficient system for narrowing down what I liked, and when I got down to my favorite 3-4 frames, she had some tricks (that actually worked) for helping decide which was THE frame to buy. I tend to deliberate over purchases, especially one that's going to be on my face and costs several hundred dollars. So I'd kind of dreaded a long process of visiting many stores before finally buying something. I called before I came to verify the address since I've been to 4th area multiple times and have never seen this place. Sure enough, it was there tucked away behind the corner. I walked in and wasn't greeted. I understand that there was only one employee working that day? At least it appeared that way BUT as soon as two other women strolled in after me, they were greeted properly and asked if they needed any help. Superb service, way beyond what I expected. I was a client of the former owner. They had to refer me to an opthamologist for what turned out to be cataract surgery on one eye. Other eye doing fine with a difficult to replicate hard contact lens. So: I lost the lens and couldn't find my spare. Called the opthamologist and they promised to fax me my prescription. Two days later, still waiting. So I remembered Lunettes Du Monde; I hoped that new management would still have my prescription. I called Dr. Dossa. She immediately found my file, but I had never been fitted for contact lenses there. She said I would have to be examined to get the prescription. She gave me a quote for the exam and the lens, with a cost totaling $400 for just the one lens. No choice, right? One other problem: she had vacation scheduled for the next day (a Friday) and wouldn't be able to see me until the next week. When she realized my predicament (one eye effectively shut down), she changed her plans on the spot and got me in first thing Friday morning. Friday morning: my wife found, somewhere, an extra lens. I showed up to see Dr. Dossa. She is pleasant, personable and professional. Her office had checked my records and found that, even with a retirement and COBRA complications, I still had vision coverage (that's how bad my sight is, it's a medical procedure...). So: the found lens was scratched. She ordered a new one. She found a lab in Alameda. They had a new lens waiting for me at 3:00 THAT DAY. Total cost: $25.00 copay. A 20/20 experience. She knows her stuff, listens to all your inquiries, explains everything in depth, and finds solutions based on specifically you (compared to other doctors who diagnose you based on the majority of people's problems). My husband and I had been long term patients of the previous doctor (Dr. Schletter) and we inherited Dr. Dossa and her staff when he retired. We have both been in for exams and glasses and were impressed with both the doctor and her staff....all are extremely knowledgeable, courteous, and helpful.
