We have had negative, highly unpleasant experiences in this office every single time we've been in to shop for frames. The doctor is exceptionally rude and unhelpful. The whole atmosphere of the place is extremely uptight and uncomfortable. Walk-ins seem to be unwelcome, even when the office is empty. The office will not allow you to write down the make/model of the frames in which you might be interested ("It's the doctor's policy"). For a small shop, they have an interesting selection of frames, but there are many other local sources that have as good or much better selections, and that don't make you feel like crap with or without an appointment. read more

I used to be satisfied and could not believe all the negative reviews. Well today the lost another customer. (I used to go there for years). My appointment was scheduled for 3pm and I called in to let them know I might be running late. I was told that if I would be in 20min late, they would have to reschedule. So I dropped everything, arrived at the office at 3.05 just to find out that they were still seeing another patient and I would have to wait until 3.30 to be seen! Like, really?! So then the Doctor comes telling me "FYI..even if you have an appointment you cannot expect that you are seen on time." so why even bother scheduling an appointment? And couldn't they have let me known when I called that they were running late instead of threatening to reschedule? Then she continues to "FYI" me several more times. Who does that? I also want to echo some of the negative comments about Walnut Square Optometry!! Dr. Nicole Sim is a really unstable and unprofessional doctor. I was planning to have an eye exam to double-check the prescription from my previous optometry clinic. Sim let me wait for more than 20 minutes and finished my eye exam hastily. I tried to communicate with Sim about the situation I met and explain what I need in the very beginning, but she didn't listen to me. Sim is very impatient and moody!!!!!! Second, when I told Sim I would just have an eye exam today without getting new glasses, her demeanor changed completely. She became even more rude, snippy, and condescending. I just got a new pair of glasses from another store recently, but she even asked me to return it to my original eyewear store and get a new one from them (Walnut Square Optometry) (which could be very expensive!!). Sim even attacked the lens quality and the eye exam techniques from other big-brand eyewear stores, which is very unprofessional to me as a client. When she found that I was not willing to return my glasses to its original store, she tried to push me to buy another new pair of glasses from her. After I told her I have used my eye insurance this year for out-of-network, she yelled at me, saying that "you will lose your in-network benefits. you should not do that". Using my insurance or not is my business, not her. I really felt it was so ridiculous when she yelled at me about how "I" used "my" insurance. This was really a terrible experience in this optometry clinic. Other staff is nice, but Nicole Sim is not. It was even the first time that I visited there, but I felt extremely uncomfortable during the eye exam process. I never went back again! Sim is too arrogant, rude, pushy, and money-oriented. This is the worst service that I have ever had in the US. That is also the reason I write this review and strongly suggest you avoid this business!!!! read more

I've been to a number of optometrists. I have a complex prescription. Dr. Sim is the only one who consistently gets it right. Yes, she's good at her job, but she also really cares. She works hard to make sure my eyes are healthy and that I have the best vision possible. She's gotten me to 20/30 vision when other optometrists could only get to 20/40. That's a huge difference for me and really impacts my every day life. read more

I used to love the old doctor who worked here as I'd worked with her a couple times years ago before my insurance changed. But she's gone now and I was left with the new doctor who I had a negative experience with when my insurance changed again and I decided to go back. She's perfectly fine at doing her job; yes, she'll accurately tell you what your prescription is, but she will not listen to your input when deciding if that prescription is right for you. What do I mean by that? Well, when I am getting my eyes tested, I come to a prescription necessity of -3.5. The tests all say that I need a prescription of -3.5. However, my eyes don't like that prescription and to use the -3.5 prescription causes strain. It makes my head hurt and makes my eyes lose focus. So I have to get a prescription lower; I have to get -3.25. I TOLD the doctor that. I informed her that I saw perfectly fine out of my (old) -3.25 prescription and that the -3.5 prescription probably wouldn't work for me as I'd tried it and it put strain on my eyes. The doctor still made me get the -3.5 prescription. She simply wouldn't listen and just kept insisting that I was wrong about what would work best for my eyes. So I got the -3.5 prescription just for it to not work for me, I had to bring them back, have them changed, pay another processing fee, and it was just an annoyingly long process that could've been avoided if the doctor would've just accepted my input. I've been wearing glasses since 4th grade and had been going to another doctor in Walnut Creek. I decided to change since I work closer to Walnut Square optometry but I will be switching back. read more

I called Walnut Square Optometry about two months ago and asked Marisol to fax my records to Rockridge Optometry in Oakland. She said she'd have to look in back records and it might take a few days. Two weeks later I called, left a message with her name and reminded her again to send my records. No one ever got back to me. Two more weeks elapsed, I went to Rockridge Optometry, and they hadn't received the records. My prescription is complex. Walnut Square Optometry's failure to send the records meant my appointment took 30 minutes longer than it should. It made me late for work. While I was at Rockridge Optometry I signed a records request form which they sent to Walnut Square. Several days later my records were finally received. By that time, however, it was too late for them to be of any help. It's this lack of caring and professionalism that caused me to leave Walnut Square Optometry in the first place. I was trying to find a place that carried Sama frames, so that is how I found Walnut Square. The store is kind of hard to find- it is on the second floor of a building with a Peet's coffee shop. The frame selection is great- I thought that the frames were all very hip and reasonably priced for high end frames. My Sama frames were cheaper here than anywhere else I checked. Royce is great. He is in charge of the appointments and frame selections. He is very honest and helpful. Thanks to him, I was able to order my dream Rx sunglasses. The only negative to this place is how popular it is- so much so that it takes about a month to get an appointment. If you're in a hurry, I recommend you do what I did- go to another optometrist to get your eyes checked, and just bring the prescription here and place the order so you can save $$ and get a great pair of glasses. They are a VSP provider too so that is a huge plus!!! read more

Nicole Sim and Dan of the office staff are not only rude, but The lens size on my sunglasses were wrongso there was a gapin them. I was told there was nothing they could do. Whoever has seen a whole in the glasses where the lens should be? I also had to return because of scratched lenses that were defective. Cutest office with extremely professional and knowledgeable staff. I went in for a vision test and they were very efficient!

I have been to the store. almost twice. The first time I went, they had many people inside, but closed the doors early. I waited 5 minutes hoping they would open up, but they actively ignored me. The second time I went midday and there were four people working the TINY space. There is hardly room for people to move, but I was super impressed by the diversity of creative frames. I picked up more frames than I have ever considered at any store. The woman helping me was great. Then the other employees got excited and tried to steer me to buy ones they liked. They will tell you if a frame looks bad and I appreciate that. They didn't have a good shape or color for my face with thin rims all the way around. I wore lab glasses for a long time so and metal partial rimmed glasses look too similar. They had great shapes, brands, and selection - surely something great would be stocked soon? When I tried to leave they really pushed me to buy, when they knew I didn't really like the best ones for me in stock because they looked like shop glasses. It was overwhelming, but that is not what spooked me off. While I was there the employees openly complained about another customer when he left in front of me, my husband, and another customer. They were upset that he didn't buy after 3 visits. They said they didn't want him in the store because he was a waste of their time and joked about not helping him next time, so he would not come back. So, I really want to go back to see if they have new frames in stock, but I have not returned. This is my neighborhood (I live a few houses away!). I don't want them to talk bad about me in front of my neighbors. I need glasses and an appointment, they take VSP, and I want to return - but I am too chicken. What haunts me is that I asked them how often they got new frames. They told me every week, but they didn't offer to call me if something suitable came, so I really wonder if this poor guy was told the same thing and returned to check stock and reconsidering when nothing was new... would be a 4-5 star, without the public gossiping about people that are careful about spending money and not easily swayed. My sib has just confirmed it. We share another weird family gene, our aging eyeballs need less correction. He's now got a weaker prescription on his contact lenses from his doctor, and I've got a downgraded adjustment on my specs. Dr. Sim took great pains to confirm my new prescription (which is better, 1 or 2; 3 or 4; better or no difference? again?) , and made sense of my often contradictory responses. She also saved me from ordering a gazillion more contacts lenses than I could possibly use in a year, due to some sloppy internal arithmetic I'd done. How cool to have a doc who's an advocate, saving you from inept mental arithmetic and ensuring you get the full insurance benefits entitled. Dan and crew run a rollicking but tight ship, I had my specs on my nose in about a week. I no longer have to tip my specs on top of my head or crank my arms out to full extension when I want to read the fine print! read more

I've gone to this office to have my eyes examined maybe four times and things have always gone smoothly. On my last visit I was told I'd need eye glasses for a little blurriness I experience while watching TV. I asked for a pair of glasses that would be fully covered by my insurance since I'd primarily be using them at home and didn't have to be seen in public so they didn't really have to have much style. When I sat down with the receptionist she begin giving me a price above what was discussed and requested, naturally I questioned her. The Doctor over heard our discussion and felt, for whatever reason, she was going to get involved. A simple discussion about price and what I wanted became extremely hostile. The Doctor grab my file and began yelling at me about my insurance coverage vs my cost...she was pointing so hard at my file I thought her finger was going to punch through the papers. The doctor continued to talk down to me with such disdain in her voice (I was floored!) I had to ask if I had done something to upset her and she went bananas. She continued to go off about my previous inquiry about their pricing and how she was trying to help me... This was an extremely weird and uncomfortable position to be in, she hadn't even completed my eye exam when all of this occurred. Needless to say I will not be going back here, EVER! read more

I paid a premium for Crizal Avancé lenses. What I got was inferior, counterfeit lenses whose coating was completely ruined in six months of careful use. The manufacturer, Essilor, said these lenses were not their product, and the "lab" who Walnut Square used was not an Essilor-authorized lab. That lab's name, believe it or not, is "Bad Ass Optical." badassoptical.com . Dr. Sim made a show of grave concern, but I heard later that she still uses Bad Ass. In sum, they're way overpriced even for what they claim to be selling, but then they deliver Bad Ass quality instead. read more

My husband and I both got exams from Nicole and between the two of us ordered glasses, sunglasses and contacts from Walnut Square. They also adjusted a pair of sunglasses for me. We were so pleased with our entire experience there. The eye exam was thorough and comfortable. Dr. Sim is friendly and professional in a very GenX way. Although she is a Doctor, it sort of felt like I was hanging out with a new friend while she happened to be poking my numbed eyeball with a blue light. Alison and Royce are definitely the bomb. While my husband and I stumbled around picking up every frame, Royce went directly to the frames that we should consider, took our feedback on each one until he was able to narrow it down to the *right* one. One little snafu happened and it was taken care of so easily and painlessly, that I barely knew it happened. It was time to get a new set of glasses manufactured in this century. So on a friend's reco, I headed out here to get the peepers checked up and get a new set of, well, pretty much everything. It's a tad challenging to find, tucked around and upstairs as it is, but be diligent as excellent service and goods are to be found. Dr. Sim did the full stretch of eye-ball services, and set me up with a set of prescriptions for new contact lenses (that don't grate my corneas after being in for 8 hours, huzzah!) and glasses. Royce helped sift through the dauntingly large selection to find the perfect pair that made me look, miraculously, rather good, unlike my previous pair, which made me look as if I'd never get laid (although--as I tell my wife--that was the look I was going for a decade ago). At any rate, fantastic, friendly 5 star service throughout, made all the better by their taking insurance (like all good things in life, great glasses aren't cheap) and by it being tucked in the gourmet ghetto, one of the few places really worth visiting out yonder. It all started in 7th grade, when I wanted to be the Asian Lisa Loeb. Since then, I've made it my duty to choose cute, plastic frames that embodied the "sexy, nerd" look. After recently hearing that Lisa Loeb came out with her own eyewear line, I just had to get a pair of glasses! The closest place that carried her frames was Walnut Square Optometry. I live in the Peninsula so it was about a thirty minute drive for me to get my dream pair of eyeglasses. I came for the glasses but left with more than that! The service is really good here. Dr. Sim breaks it down for you and I've learned more from her than the countless number of optometrists I've seen in fifteen years. The staff is friendly and also very helpful. Great selection of "sexy, nerd" frames if that is the look you're going for. Dr. Sim is not only passionate about her science, but she's equally passionate about her patients. She always makes you feel like you're her only focus during an office visit. During my last visit, Dr. Sim recently switched me over from frames to contacts after I expressed that i had trouble wanting to wear my glasses. She set me up with a mono-correction and it's made my vison world 100% more liberating. She nailed the prescription right away and I no longer have think about putting on and taking off glasses according to my multiple tasks all day (computer, driving or reading). it's all now in one sweet package! She's a rockstar. Dr. SIm also diagnosed my daughter with a weird inflammation of her inner eye that needed immediate attention and sent her straight away to a specialist to take care of it. It looked at first like a common eye infection, but Dr. Sim nailed the diagnosis--which saved my daughter from further damage to her eye. In the frames department, Josh and Dan are super fab at finding just the right frames that fit your face and lifestyle. They really understand the ratio of frame size/shape to face shape, and take the time to consider frame color with your personality. When I had picked out my computer station frames (before contacts) they really helped me hone in on a pair i loved. I had such an amazing experience with everyone at this office!! After an initial hiccup with scheduling due to Dr. Sim being out, they quickly found availability - even sooner than the original date. With the date moving as quickly as it did, I didn't have care available for my 2 month old, and they were more than gracious in having him there for the full eye exam and all the paperwork. As a new mom, I can't tell you how grateful I was to get everything done without feeling like I had an unwelcome guest with me. On the contrary, they were super respectful and kind. Beyond the amazingly kind and gracious staff, they are all very professional in their work. Dr. Sim was thorough in her exam, making sure I had the right prescription. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my eyes haven't changed in 3+ years, which meant my current glasses were just fine. But I did need new contact lenses, so Dr. Sim made sure I could try a few different trial pairs before picking the right fit. The gentlemen at the front were super efficient with the paperwork and answered any and all questions. All in all, I am so glad to have found this gem of a spot. As always I had a really pleasant overall experience at Walnut Square Optometry for my annual visit there. I will be losing my insurance this month, so I wanted to take advantage of my insurance plan while it lasts. Not only was Dr Sim's exam meticulous and great but as the front desk was really busy and a new employee was being trained, she took time to point out my copay and specifics of my insurance coverage for me and my family after the exam. I also found out that I can insure my family and I, on my own through VSP, which I plan on doing from now on since I lost my job insurance. The team was really helpful providing all that information. Wow I was very impressed with Dr Sim's exam a few weeks ago. She has this new equipment, I was really impressed with her digital camera, She took a photo of my eye and compared it to the picture from a few years ago, I was able to check the progress of my condition. I even took a photo of that image and posted it on my Facebook :) I went to ta specialist last year and he told me to go back to Dr Sim saying that I was in good hands with her! I am a former customer and patient from the Dr Harrison / Dono / Royce days. I stuck it out with Dr Sim and her staff in the optical shop for 3 exams, but determined after my exam last year to find a different optometrist and abandon ship on this place. My complaints, specifically: My 2013 appointment was last of the day at 3 pm. When I arrived early, I was made to wait past my appointment time and when I did get in to see Dr Sim for my exam (which was post-pregnancy and post-breastfeeding and I was badly in need of a new prescription), I was rushed through my exam. My eye health was not (in my opinion) thoroughly checked, and my questions to Dr Sim were met with snippy answers in a rude tone. I was given the hard sell by the front office staff to buy a new set of frames - which admittedly, I love and still adore wearing to this day - but they were uncomfortably above my budget, and I had gone in hoping to re-lens my existing vintage frames. This was a weakness on my part, but I really felt the pressure to buy-buy-buy. At least Dono and Royce had some finesse about it. I'm done with this place - I got a referral to another shop that is (a) in my neighborhood, (b) does not have a zillion stairs or awful parking, (c) is far and away more through, competent, and up-to-date on diagnostics and (d) encouraged me to keep my current prescription and sent me away without suggesting I buy eyeglasses at all. Night and day, I tell you. Walnut Square Optometry is a high-priced optical boutique focused on selling high-end eyewear to those who can afford it, and who don't have serious eye issues or health needs. If all you need is a quick prescription change and have $600 or more to spend PER PAIR of glasses, this is a great place to find unusual frames. However, if you're interested in a thorough check of your eye health, an optometrist that truly cares about you as a patient, and affordable lenses and frames, this is NOT your place. Addendum: They did replace one scratched lens, which was under warranty, and they did so without any cost to me and it was done on time and with good cheer. However, the lab they sent it to gave the lens a different color of anti-glare coating than the original lens, so now they don't match - one is pink-tinted and the other is green-tinted. It gives my glasses a subtle psychedelic 3D flare that I actually don't mind because I'm an arty kook, but someone with less creative outlook on such things might have a big problem with this. The selection of frames are nice, if a little plain. I'm used to the flashier designs one might find in optometry centers where younger people go. However, I only wanted frames that were functional, not ugly, and would help me see. The frames I got do just that. One thing I really appreciate about the brand I got (411), when you buy a frame, they give a frame to a person in need. They get a star for the conscious frames. The other frames can get pretty pricey but still, good. The optometrist is very thorough and does some tests not usually done at what I have come to call "eye mills." This place is very good, especially because of the care you receive. It was a busy day when I came for my eye exam and it took awhile for anyone to pay attention to the fact that I needed help. But they tried. Two weeks later, I get a call to pick up my glasses. The staff in the office were awkward...to say the least. Like they had never seen a brown woman coming into a Berkeley boutique before. The man eventually snapped out of it and did his job but the young white woman could barely look at me, did not say hello or even acknowledge my presence. I get that this is a boutique but it's 2015. We don't need snooty assistance anymore or people who are uncomfortable working with clients from all backgrounds and ethnicities. read more

Well, it's happened. I am now near-sighted AND far-sighted. Yippee! So, I saw Dr. Sims because I could not read without holding it out far and squinting... She suggested I try progressive lens.. but warned me that not everyone can work with them! I could not see at all out of them! I was admittedly upset... The glasses where super cute, but not cheap...She listened to all of my concerns and really went out of her way to fix my problem and work with me and my budget! She re-test my eyes... at no cost beyond what I initially paid. She, also, gave me a deep discount on my second pair! Her staff were fun, accommodating and professional. I usually review restaurants as I'm in the process of building a restaurant blog but I had such a wonderful experience here that I'm making an exception. This place is wonderful, simply put. My husband and I have been coming here for all of our eyecare needs for the last 5 years. It's always pleasant every time. The place puts me at ease immediately as I feel taken care of. Both Dr. Sim and her various staff over the years have always been so nice and helpful. We spend a whole afternoon getting exams trying on glasses and hanging out with the staff. It's fun. I'm snooty with frames and I've been to a lot of high end places. This place is special. They have both low, medium and high end for very budget it seems like. But what's consistent is the impeccable style. These people know what they are doing. It's not just the frames. They have excellent customer service. This is why we come all the way from sf making a trip every year. It's worth the drive. Dr. Sim and her staff are super patient and worked with me through my various insurances over the years. The exams are also precise, super thorough to a fault. I don't understand some of these reviews as Dr. Sim is really kind. Her equipments are also new and she's helped both me and my husband through our bad eyesight and eye irritation issues and referring us to the best people. I love this place. I found Walnut Square Optometry on Yelp and it has been a great experience! After having a bad experience at another optometrist office, I was determined to find something better in the area. Luckily I came across Dr. Harrison's rating on yelp and I grabbed the opportunity to go somewhere that I actually liked. The doc is really cool, very attentive to my needs and questions. I never felt rushed or stupid for asking all the questions I needed to ask about my eyes. The opticians there are super nice and friendly. They helped me find some cool glasses within my price range and even called in the lens company to tell me how thick my lenses would be with a certain frames (I have bad eyes) that I picked and when i expressed worry that they would be too thick. Dr. Nicole Sims is an unstable person who should lose her license. This crazy place just called me asking me if I could move up my appt. by 20 minutes, which I kindly agreed to do. They then kept me waiting for 13 minutes and the doctor went on the attack with me for expressing irritation. She is unhinged!
