I've been going here since my first pair of glasses at age 7. They rock. I don't know whether Donno actually knows my name, but he certainly looks it up, as well as the fact that my brother and dad go here as well, and asks how they're doing. It's great. Whenever I need new frames, he's attentive, honest, and helpful. I love trying on his "just for fun" suggestions. When I was little they had mini Snickers, and I would load up before my eye exam. I am a senior and a former customer from Dr. Harrison days. I stuck out with Dr. Nicole Sim with 2 exams. Recently during the exam, she was mad at me because I did not threw away the disposable lens as fast as she wanted. In all exam I experienced disdain tone & rude attitude. She has threatened me with terms like Cataract, Glaucoma etc. She interrupted my question with calling her assistant to charge this charge that. I went to this clinic a little less than a week ago when I woke up with what seemed like an eye infection caused by contact wearing. I went and was seen by Nicole Sims and I have to respectfully say this was the WORST encounter/ experience I have had at an optometrist. She was crass, abrupt, VERY VERY pushy, and outright rude. When my husband and I finally stepped out of the office on our way home we both looked at each other dumbfounded at the experience we just had. Here's the anecdote: I walk in, in pain, we fill out the forms and a few minutes later get called back. We get asked what insurance we have, we say VSP, and she informs us that she can't take VSP for this visit because it is a medical visit and she will need to use my general insurance. I say well I don't have eye insurance on my general insurance and she says, well we'll figure it out later, let's look at your eye. Ok, fine... no problem. Then she looks at my eye, stains my eye, looks at my eye again, looks ay my eye another time and says, well, I'm not sure what it is, it may be an eye infection but i'm not sure. Then she proceeds to look at a chart saying shes trying to figure out a diagnosis, and for 5 minutes she is trying figure out how to diagnose me, which was a little concerning to me. She finally said, well I guess I'll just put this down (whatever the med. term was) but that's not really what you have, I'm not sure what it is. She then wrote two RX a cream for night and drops for the day. Ok, fine, whatever. All during the exam she seemed like she was off to a bad day and just grumpy, so compassion wasn't in her books that day. On our way out to reception she said I need to see you Tuesday, to which I replied well I have my internship during the day... and instead of her offering an early morning or evening or Wednesday appointment her snide reply was "well a bridge isn't going to fall if you don't go, right!? You have to come Tuesday no matter what!" I was so shocked at her rude answer that didn't provide any solution, any compassion-- it was her way or the highway.... that's not the definition of a good doctor... I was completely dumbfounded!! We then went out to the reception desk to figure out office visit charges etc and this is what really shocked me... she gave me an ultimatum... she said since you think you have a deductible you haven't met, you can either pay me $115 now (which I'm giving you a severely discounted rate she told me) or I can turn it in to your insurance and then they will pass the bill along to you which may be higher like $170. I asked if I could have a day to call my insurance to find out exactly and a switch just turned. She got snappy, short, rude, and said never mind, I'll just turn it into your insurance, forget it. I was appalled that she talked to her clients like this and got such an attitude on her for no reason. I felt so manipulated and the shock of it all made me want to run for the door. I handed her my credit card and she gleefully charged me for the visit. The next day, doubting her work I went to the Julia Morgan Eye center to get seen... not only were they considerate, friendly, concerned and thorough but it was $55 FOR THE VISIT! WALNUT SQUARE OPTOMETRY RIPPED ME OFF by cornering me... and as a result I paid more than double the standard office visit rate! I feel robbed and taken advantage of! read more

Dr. Sim is awesome. simply put. She made sure that i had the correct prescription and took the time to really be thorough on my eyes. She gave me some tips on eye health and even gave me some free eye drops because my eyes get dry when I fly and I told her I was going to Oxford in less than a month. Love her. The frames this place offers are pricy because they are designer and super cool so that is something to think about. The staff is really non pressuring and fun to try frames on with. They make sure that whatever you pick not only looks great but feels really good. My glasses are like sweat pants for my face. read more

I found Walnut Square Optometry via Yelp over 2 years ago when I decided to get a new pair of glasses. I hadn't been happy with the folks I had been seeing... I had a wonderful experience at Walnut Square. Dr Sim is fabulous! Josh and Dan are extremely helpful. My glasses were the best I'd ever had. I write code most days and stare at the screen for hours on end. I also read a lot and play the violin. The prescription Dr Sim worked up for me has allowed to do all my daily activities without the eye fatigue I had been experiencing. Same for distance vision glasses which I only use on long trips. Driving those long 12-18 hour stints to and from the Rockies is now much easier. I've Gone back every year since. And I'll be getting my glasses and eye exams from Dr Sim as long as I live here. read more

Most notably, all the employees are kind, knowledgeable and make what is a routine errand a true joy. Josh and Dan were both extremely helpful in finding my newest frames. My daughter and I have been going to Walnut Square for the last 4+ years. We always get great treatment and the staff are smart, helpful and good-humored. They always go out of their way to be helpful and, on the rare occasion something isn't exactly right, they pretty much bend over backwards to fix it. I received an eye exam here a few weeks ago, it was my second time around and as always a great experience. Dr. Sim was thorough in her exam and explained in detail how to better take care of my eyes. We even reviewed photos of my eyes that she took to see the contrast. Note to self, wear sun glasses when you spend a lot of time outside in the sun. I picked up a pair of frames to replace my old ones. Isabella at the front desk was great in helping me select a style that I would like. I came to this office while I was visiting a friend. I was having problems with my contact lenses and needed glasses right away. Not only did Dr. Nicole Sim treat my infection, but I found out I was over-corrected. I was so glad I found Dr. Sim so I could finally deal with this issue. After all this, my vision with glasses (I couldn't wear them before because I used to feel dizzy when I wore them) was also markedly improved. Before this appointment, I didn't know I could see this well and comfortably! I also appreciated Dr. Sim's knowledgeable and empathetic manner; she really made the whole experience positive!!! I am happily experiencing the best sight of my life now that I have visited Walnut Square Optometry. The whole experience was excellent from start to finish. The shop is clean, chic and very comfortable. I was able to try frames on before my exam (they have the coolest frames--you can tell that each one has been hand selected by the opticians) and my appointment was right on time. Dr. Sim gave me the most comprehensive eye exam I have ever had, and she took ample time to explain what was going on with my vision. I appreciated her genuine concern and her patience in answering any questions. Her expertise and professionalism is apparent throughout the exam and in the atmosphere of her exam room. After my exam, Matthew and Dan (the opticians) then helped me pick out a great pair of glasses. Matthew sat down with me and helped fit the glasses. I liked that Matthew kept referring to my chart to figure out the perfect fit. It's clear that he wanted to customize my glasses down to the last parameter, and that he was passionate about making every detail perfect. I have been a customer for almost 7 years. Dr Sim gave me my first eye exam, and I bought my first pair of eyeglasses here, which i still wear and love. Although I am still a bit uneasy when getting an eye exam (and having my eyes dilated), Dr Sim is kind, caring and professional. She answers my questions. The staff (although there have been changes over the years) has always been friendly and helpful. I love their selection of frames and Mathew and Dan are truly helpful Today when I picked up my new lenses and my first-ever pair of prescription sunglasses, my eyes did not take to my new prescription, which was quite stronger in one eye. Dan explained that my eyes needed to adjust, I had been compensating for an old prescription. I had a moment of panic, what if I didn't adjust? Dan assured me that my eyes would get use to the new prescription, but If after 2 weeks it was still a problem, I should come back. They have a 60 day guarantee and would make sure this worked for me. So today I write the Yelp review for the caring, great frames, good customer service, and professionalism. read more

A few years ago I bought a pair of Silhouette reading glasses here, prior to Dr. Sim's tenure, and seem to mangle them from time to time since they're like solidified air with very thin temples. So I can be pretty critical but I'm a bit taken back with some of the negative posts from others! I went to Walnut Optometry where Dr. Larry Harrison gave me a routine eye exam and he was/ the place is nothing less than phenomenal. Dr. Larry Harrison is laid back, very approachable and friendly, which is conducive to a great patient/doctor relationship! I got to express all my concerns however ridiculous they seemed (my eyes get so much worse at night! I think my R eye is nearsighted but my L is farsighted! I think I'm going cross eyed!!). Not only was he patient in listening to me but he took the time to carefully examine my "ailments" and assured that I was indeed, not going cross eyed ;) He even took the time to explain stuff to me on a random power point that happened to be on his computer monitor all in an accessible, non-dogmatic sort of way. The people operating the front desk were great too! I complained about my vision worsening at night and Royce simply said, "your eye is like a pinhole camera. In the evening when your pupil dilates for more light, there's less focus. When it contracts in daylight, there's more focus." Duh! How did I not know that before?! He even helped me fix my old Gucci glasses that were slightly lopsided due to having been sat on numerous times by myself, and my bf as well I'm sure. Never were they pushy in trying to get me to try on glasses. The glass selection, however, is NOT my style. It's too eclectic and middle-aged artsy fartsy farmer's market mom for me, but hey, that may be your cup of tea. I do like that they have a great selection of Prodesign- this unqiue and well made selection of frames from Denmark. I will reluctantly visit other places to get my (Prada, Chanel, Georgio Armani, etc.) frames. I most certainly would go back. I even urged my bf who has super man eyesight to go, just for the sake of visiting Dr. Larry Harrison. read more

I've been wearing glasses and/or contacts for over 30 years, and so have had many eye exams. Walnut Square Optometry has provided me the best eye exam service and experience I've ever had. First, Dr. Larry is awesome. Laid back, friendly, but so meticulous, thorough and knowledgeable. During my first year's visit to him, he figured out that I had been wearing a diameter of contact lens that was just a wee bit too tight. When he changed the diameter of my lens, I could not believe how comfortable they were! During my next year's visit, he patiently refitted my contacts three times over three weeks to monitor my prescription (all for the price of one visit), as my aging eyes have been changing both in degree of nearsightedness and farsightedness. What he came up with was a prescription for nearsightedness that gives me 20-20 distance vision, but which also allows me to read WITHOUT reading glasses. I didn't think that was possible! I couldn't be happier with Dr. Larry's genius diagnosing. And Dono and Royce are very delightful. They have excellent people skills, are very competent office administrators, and are great at finding suitable frames for any shape of face. Plus, they are just really fun. Even my kids love going to Walnut Square to get their eyes examined. And, yes, the frames are expensive, but oh so stylish. read more

Cozy shop! Very Nice eyeglass frame selection. I went in looking for a rectangular "Club Master" style pair of eyeglasses with a smaller frame than the standard. I found them here!! It was my first stop in Berkeley from Santa Cruz and well worth the trip. Got get those back-to-school glasses since my current pair broke. NO RETURNS!!!! So keep that in mind. Between the Saturday crowd and phones ringing off the hook, it's hard to believe they were able to keep all the customers feeling like they were getting sufficient attention - but they did so with professionalism and skill. In the exam room, Dr. Sim shows that she cares about each and every patient by not cutting corners. On the contrary, she was incredibly thorough - she answered my every question with depth and empathy, never pressing me for time. Furthermore, it was clear that her diagnosis is based in helping rather than exploiting the customer. I think this one of the most fundamentally important aspects of a doctor - a doctor motivated not by money, but by genuine care. read more

You may be wondering if this place is really as good as all these other reviewers suggest. It is. What it is *not* is cheap, or fast. They seem to carry only designer/boutique frames, and use an outside lab for lenses. Royce and Dono will make you look fantastic, but you won't get a $99 glasses-in-an-hour type deal. They do take VSP insurance, though (that's you, UC employees and students). They're only open 9-5 Tue-Sat, including the opticians/showroom, which is annoying but understandable for a single-doc practice. NB: If you have VSP, they have to get your lenses through the VSP lab, which for some reason took a whole month to produce my mild prescription in a stock lens shape. Now about that quality care... Larry (insists on being called by his first name) uses a hand lens to do the retinal exam through un-dilated pupils, so you don't have to stumble around in sunglasses for hours afterward. He's got a bunch of high-tech gadgetry, but still double checks everything the old-fashioned way. He was patient and thorough in the "number one or number two?" phase of the exam. He suggested progressive lenses with *no* correction at the bottom (I only need a prescription for far away) as a way to relieve the eye strain that has been slowly ruining my vision, rather than just letting me keep coming back for a stronger prescription every year. He just seems to put a whole lot more thought and care into the process than other optometrists I've seen. Unless you absolutely need a rock-bottom price or early/late hours, you really couldn't ask for more than this place offers. read more

Walnut Square is a great place to come for unique frames, good advice, and full service. As soon as I came upon the website and then walked through the door, I knew I was in the right place to find the perfect frames. As a long time glasses wearer, I tend to know what styles I like, but due to the great selection at Walnut Square, I was able to branch out a little from my usual shapes and colors to find the right frames. Since I had come to the shop by myself I was very thankful for the advice and as soon as I got started and told the optician the styles I like, he started picking some out for me to try. I not only felt very well taken care of, but also learned things about the fit of frames and eye distance that I didn't know before. Their knowledgable approach looked beyond frame style to what fits best and is most comfortable - since frames are something you wear every day. I was happy that I finally picked a brand and style of frames that I didn't see anywhere else (no cookie cutter styles) and they accepted my VSP insurance. Another optician called my insurance while I was there to make sure of what was covered, and this helped me to also be more informed about the pricing. They were able to get me in a higher index lens at minimal cost. All in all - Walnut Square is wonderful and worth a look. If you like efficient and informative customer service and learning more about properly fitting frames, then this is the place for you. read more

Dr. Sim has been my optometrist for 4 years now. She also takes care of my 9 year old son. Dr. Sim is a very thorough, caring doctor. She takes her time with all her patients. (This does sometimes make her run late, but that is worth it to me.) I am especially pleased that she figured out a problem with my son's eyes which affects his learning and has alluded other professionals. That is a huge relief. She has also been very careful to help me with my dry eyes. Her prescriptions have been spot-on. Once, when I did have a problem with my prescription, she re-examined me and changed the lenses for free. Most of the optometrists in Berkeley that I have been in the past have only one or two glasses for small/narrow faces (which I have), but Dr. Sim's office has a large selection of them. Her staff is very precise with fitting glasses and they understand the challenge of fitting my narrow face. All the glasses I have gotten there have been very comfortable. read more

We've been patients of Dr. Sim for the past few years. Both I and my daughter have had exam work performed and new glasses made by Dr. Sim, and have had a great experience each time we've had appointments. Dr. Sim's office is family friendly (for both grown-ups and kids), and she's got a natural rapport with kids -- she put our daughter, who tends to be nervous about doctors in general, at ease from the first visit by engaging with her, taking the time to explain how the exam works and generally being very friendly and patient with her questions. We also appreciate the time Dr. Sim put in to explain our choices when it came time to order her first pair of glasses (at the age of seven). I genuinely enjoyed my experience at the Walnut Square Optometry. The store carries a wide range of selection that features unique colors and shapes. I was in a bit of a pickle between two frames. Dan the optician, was extremely attentive and listened to all my concerns with a great deal of patience. As the time went by, I was unaware that it was already passed 4.30pm - closing time for the shop.  Dan never mentioned a word about the closing time, but kept on helping me. The three guys who were there were very friendly, funny and made me wish I had made an appointment with them over the place I had selected. Yet another customer from the Larry, Dono, Royce days abandoning ship on Walnut Square Optometry. For anyone not aware, this shop changed hands a couple years ago, and a great many of the 5 star reviews are from the previous owner. It's gone WAY down hill. Actually, not counting the stars earned by the previous owner and his staff (Larry, Dono, Royce), the Nicole Sim owned shop rating is more like 3 stars (and falling). ALL the 1-2 star ratings are under Sim's ownership, and most of the 4-5 were under Larry's. Nothing like finding a parade and marching in front of it until all your bad-attitude-stick-waving drives everyone away.... As others have said, Sim is arrogant, rude, pushy. Add marginally competent. The prescription she gave me was over-corrected. Found that out when I just gave up on her and went across town to someone else for a new prescription and new lenses. Not overly happy about paying for a second exam outside my insurance --only 1 exam and set of lenses covered per yer-- but it's better than straining to focus for an entire year, and if she doesn't have the skill to get the prescription right, why even bother to argue? She gave the lame excuse that it was just my eyes getting older and that was as good as it could get. ("Older"-- in my 30's?! Are you kidding?!) I didn't push the issue. It's obviously the best she could do, whether lacking skill or simple willingness to apply actual effort, the result is the same. "Just" my eyes. My eyes are important to me, if not to her. And they didn't pose an insolvable, or even difficult, puzzle to any other OD I've ever had, before or since. There are a few reviews wherein people say she's thorough, so I must ask, does she only give thorough exams to people with exotic problems? I'd rather deal with someone is thorough (and polite) all the time, not just with complicated cases. It's a bad combination of qualities, none of them desirable. Maybe the Walnut Square location and a large frame collection gives them enough 1 time customers to keep the shop crowded. Outside of that, I can't imagine how they stay in business. read more

I have been a patient at Walnut Square OP. for about 10 years. I loved the previous doctor, but not Dr. Sims or her obsequious staff. Dr. Sims was a little too bubbly and friendly with me until I had a problem with the glasses I purchased from them (to the tune of over $900), and then her demeanor changed completely. Rude, snippy, condescending is how I would describe her. Basically I couldn't see properly. I had never had a problem in years past with new prescriptions. Simply put on the new glasses and was good to go. Not these glasses! I went back numerous times only to have her staff fiddle with the fit (which of course did nothing). After 6 months Dr. Sims saw me again, and claimed my prescription had changed (which i doubt very much was true--if anything she didn't get it right to start with). New glasses were ordered and received. Same problem. Her final statement to me was "I don't know what else to do." Then I was shocked to get a bill for $140! I wrote her a letter saying I should not have been charged anything additional, and then she conceded. I never went back again! Then a co-worker told me about her optometrist, Dr. Moonsamy on Lakeshore Ave. I couldn't get an appointment with her, but was seen by several of her staff, who figured out my problem. It was partly the prescription and partly the manufacturer of the lenses themselves. I ordered new glasses and they weren't right, just like my last ones. But they tweaked the prescription, and called Walnut Square to see what lens manufacturer was used in my older prescription that had been perfect. Then they re-made my new glasses, and now everything is perfect! I believe that it was Neil that finally figured out my problem, and I must say he was really great to work with! My strong advice: Stay away from Dr. Sims. read more

I walked into Walnut Square just hoping for a routine prescription update. Part of the way through my exam, Dr. Sim noticed an unusually drastic change in my prescription over the course of just a year, and showed me the difference between my new prescription and my "old" one, only a year outdated. I had to admit, the difference was quite significant. She persuaded me to go through a full-length exam and discovered that I may be at risk for a genetic vision defect--nothing that we could prevent, but certainly something to keep an eye on. The individual attention she gave me exceeded every other optometrist I have ever visited, and I've worn glasses for some 15 years.
