I have come here since I was a teenager. The last few years my visits have been less frequent because of Lasik. However, I referred my fiance here and we called about 2 weeks in advance to get a Saturday appt. He's not from Berkeley and was a little skeptical in using different doctors since he goes to San Francisco all the time. His response to me was the staff and doctor was super helpful and friendly! So nice!!! So speedy!! No wait!! Dr. Harlan Wong is the BEST optometrist I've ever been to! He's really cool, and nice, and efficient, and holds up an actual conversation with you! 10/10 would recommend Dr. Wong!!!! I didn't take a look at their glasses selection cuz I. Didn't need any, but I went into get fitted for monthly contacts instead of dailies and I thought I'd have to pay hella in copays and all that. Also my copay was only 10 bucks!!! When the year prior I went on campus and they had someone who was still training do the exam and charged me like 50 bucks and too twice as long! The newer and more advanced tests were all much less unpleasant than the traditional eye tests (no air puffs and nasty eye dilation fluid). And I genuinely enjoyed my conversation with Dr. Wong. Dr. Wong's is the best. The place doesn't look fancy, but they have an excellent selection of attractive frames in a wide variety of price ranges. Dr. Wong does a careful and thoughtful exam. The service is amazing. Florinda and John are amazing and help you maximize the use of insurance coverage and guarantees and really know how to keep people's out-of-pocket costs down while getting you a great final product. We are a family of four who all use glasses and we've been so happy with their services since we found them a decade ago. When we occasionally strayed to "find something cheaper" or fell for a pair of frames in a different window it has almost always been a much less satisfactory experience. So we are sticking with Dr. Wong. read more

I'd like to qualify my one star. It isn't for Dr. Wong who I think is excellent, but for the two people who staff the front. The man is rude and dismissive - doesn't care at all about customers or 'customer service'. The woman who measures for lenses did a bad job and the lenses have never been correct. The center of my eyes were mis-measured so the bi focal aspect is way off. I have not been well since going there (not from them) and didn't think it was the measurements that were at fault - found out by going to get another opinion. Suffice it to say no empathy or way to help from the man who I spoke to at Dr. Wongs - he could care less and was obvious about it. So much for customer service. read more

Dr Wong is a fantastic UC-Berkeley trained optometrist with the latest computer-driven examination equipment as well as an old school approach to thinking around complex eye issues. He is very thorough and tremendously personable. His staff is also fantastic and the only reason I give them 4 stars is that they are so busy that they are a bit distracted and this makes them less than precisely detail oriented, which I value in opticians. Nevertheless, they are extremely nice, super willing to rectify any mistakes, and price friendly. Just make sure to give them super precise instructions. read more

This review is for the discerning customer who is looking for great customer service and prefers a more retail orientated experience. +3 Doctors Harlan is a good efficient doctor. It's an eye exam nothing crazy. +0 Retail experience - It's a standard doctor's office they are just checking boxes in terms of the retail experience. If you are not discerning then it should work for you. But if you are then search elsewhere. Especially if you view glasses as fashion. If you have a high prescription and VSP insurance,I would not recommend buying glasses here. Wanted to like it, but after you get the lighter lenses - they offered a 1.67, there was no mention of 1.74 lenses. - it came out to ~230, excluding exam cost. You're better off at a big retailer if you are price sensitive. Or online retailer if you are looking for more frame selection and competitive pricing. Get your PD measured and shop elsewhere. Overall not a bad, experience, just not a great experience. Why settle? read more

I've had a rough ride the last couple of years. Cancer was causing blindness and much more BUT all is better ... and with me the whole time has been Harlan and his great staff. The practice is a Berkeley institution, doesn't really need anybody's spin ... they've earned their chops. My experience is that they are also pro's handling all of my insurance stuff. I happen to be next door at triple Rock with my husband and I was in desperate need of repair for my sunglasses and we noticed this shop and went in and the people there, the young woman was so wonderful inviting, helpful, calming, and I can't say enough about how grateful I am that she helped fix my sunglasses that had a broken hinge and it was 10 minutes before closing and she didn't even mind, we reminisced about Berkeley and the olden days and I can't tell you how surprised I was when she wouldn't even accept a donation or payment for the wonderful work she did for my sunglasses!!!! Good grief. I just realized I have been a client of Dr. Wong for 18 years, from eyeglasses to contact lenses and back to eyeglasses. Dr. Wong and his staff have been terrific. They are highly competent, patient, very good at answering questions and explaining optical issues. I have always felt welcome. They always give me plenty of time to decide what I want. They are great at explaining insurance options (mine is VSP). They go out of their way to correct any problem that has occurred (e.g. old lenses not fitting new frames). The quality of their service is excellent. The glasses are of high quality and prepared quickly. I have always been able to find a frame within my price range (low price) easily with their help. I look forward to my appointments and what is new with everyone. I recommend very highly. read more

Dr. Wong is good at the Exam part of it. I would however suggest you buy your glasses elsewhere. Usually I just get a script from them and purchase my glasses at a Walmart that's closer to where I live. This time I saw a pair I liked and bought there. Keep in mind this location is about 20 min drive from where I live but like I said earlier the MD himself is good. Eyeglasses came back and somethings off. Called Office and had to come back for Re-Exam. Rx changed and left glasses for new lenses. Now wait for them. So to finally collect my glasses that hopefully will be ok this will be trip # 4 to this location where parking is not easy/$3 per hour at a meter. You cannot get a refund on the glasses only like for like or something. Walmart has always given me a satisfaction guarantee - don't like them for any reason return for full refund. My wife has taken that option before and because of it we always go back. My mistake. In short get your Eye Exam with Dr. Wong, for glasses shop elsewhere. One other issue, wife reminds me last year she got her script and tried to purchase elsewhere, only to be told there was a hold on the insurance benefits. Called the insurance who said Dr Wong's office had a hold on her eyewear benefits to indicate she was purchasing glasses from them even though she made it clear during the exam that she was purchasing closer to home. Had to call Dr Wong's office to request they release the hold so that she could use the insurance. read more

I so love this place! It's not a super fancy dr office but has everything you need dr wise. The frame selection is great, although they don't have many sunglasses. The best thing ever is the support and love of the front office folks.... they are totally cool and completely honest when you ask for suggestions. Found Harlan Wong's office on Yelp (thanks, all). Great location and quick! I just needed an eye check up and I was in and out in 30 minutes. Got through the basic eye exam ("click this button when you see this thing, okgo") in 10 minutes and then spent about 15 minutes with Dr. Wong. Super friendly, explained what he was doing and why and told me what to do. His shop is both a medical facility and a, well, shop, so if you need frames/glasses and an eye exam, this is your place. Nice folks, quick, straightforward. The good: fast and great service. The bad: their patient history forms are a little out of date. "Do you have health insurance?" "Yes." In, out, and done! Needed to get my eyes checked out really quickly. Got a next day appointment (everywhere else was booked at least 2 weeks out)! The assistant was a little annoyed when I didn't know who my insurance carrier was (my fault really!) but was very helpful finding out that I did have insurance that they accepted. Why not 5 stars? At no point in time did anyone explain what the tests were and what they were doing. I don't mind and just wanted in and out. Why not 3 stars?: Didn't pressure me in to buying anything! even had a form that had me agreeing to the extra charge for a screening or waving the screening. (other places I have been sort of twist my arm to get me to walk out with a pair of glasses or get contacts). read more
