Had an emergency but the scheduler offered a routine appointment that was two months out. Mentioned to the staff when I arrived. They apologized profusely and said they will address it with the office manager. The lobby is connected to another room that is crowded with staff. The room has a main station for checking in and another counter for checking out. Weird set up. What bothers me was the lack of professionalism from the office staff. I felt like I was in a busy salon with a lot of chattering. Really don't want to know what the person did over the weekend or other personal stuff. Even when I was in the treatment room I can hear them chatter amongst themselves. The optometrist was very active, talked really fast and seemed like she wanted to finish with me and move on to her next patient. The ophthalmologist was one of the main physicians. Came in without a greeting and didn't take the time to read my chart. Had to explain once again why I needed to see them. Seemed competent but lack social skills. Was Going to transfer my care to them but not sure if I want to now. Have a follow up appointment but I have a strong desire to cancel. read more

Just had a very successful cataract surgery with Dr. Andrew Sorenson and it was frankly amazing. My vision is much improved and he is an excellent surgeon. The Optomitrist was unable to clearly explain what the changes meant in my subscription numbers from last year citing the reason as 'optics'. When asked if this meant my vision had improved she was equally vague and patronizing 'If you want to look at it that way you can.' ...possibly the most frustrating, unsatisfactory medical experiences I've ever had. Here's how it went: 1. I made an appointment with Sorensen because my optometrist thought I MIGHT have the beginnings of a cataract on my left eye. She told me that Sorensen's are the experts and would be able to do a quick exam to determine whether or not I had a cataract forming. 2. When I called to make the appointment, I was very clear that I simply wanted to have my left eye looked at because my optometrist thought I MIGHT be getting a cataract. I was very clear that i was NOT in need of an eye exam for anything else, and that I was NOT scheduling surgery. 3. I received an email prior to my appointment asking me to provide all kinds of health information. The message also informed me that I would have a refraction performed for $75, or that I could opt out. I clearly responded that I was opting out. I had no need of an eye exam; I had an eye exam in June 2025. 4. When I checked in for my appointment, I was told that I HAD to have a refraction and that I HAD to pay $75 before I could be seen. I explained that I was only there to have my left eye looked at to determine if I had a cataract forming. The receptionist said that the eye exam had to be done. I reluctantly paid the $75. 5. I was taken into an exam room and I waited for 20 minutes past my appointment time for someone to see me. A young lady came in and did a routine eye exam even though I told her I had had an exam in June and was only there to have my left eye checked for a cataract. 6. I was then taken by another person to a series of machines that performed some sort of examinations/photos of my eyes, none of which were explained to me. I told EACH person I saw that I was only there to have my left eye examined for a cataract. At one point my eyes were dilated, but no one explained to me why it was necessary. Each time I repeated that I was just there to have my left eye looked at, I was told that the doctor would discuss that with me. 7. After sitting through a series of exams/photos, I was finally taken to an exam room by a young woman who did not introduce herself. She simply said she was going to examine my eyes. At that point I was quite frustrated and I told her I did not need an eye exam, I was there to see a doctor about a possible cataract in my left eye. She seemed confused and told me that I could opt out of the test and that the doctor would see me soon. 8. Finally, approximately 90 minutes after I arrived at the offices, after multiple people herding me around to multiple testing stations, I saw a doctor. She came into the room with a young lady. They both sat down and the doctor introduced herself. The young lady said nothing so I asked her who she was and the doctor told me "oh, she's an intern. Is it ok if she sits in?" At that point I asked if any of the "tests" they had performed had indicated the presence of a cataract in my left eye. The doctor seemed confused and told me that those "tests" were measuring me for surgery. When I said AGAIN that I was there simply to have my left eye examined for a cataract, the doctor said "oh, let me take a look" and looked at both my eyes using a lighted instrument. She then told me that I have cataracts in both eyes but nothing needs any treatment at this time. She also told me I have some macular degeneration, nothing to worry about at this time, and gave me a paper grid to look at now and then to determine if it's progressing. She suggested I come back in 6 months to check again for any changes. I spent roughly 10 minutes with the doctor. It appears to me that if ANYONE had actually listened to me, I probably could have been in and out of the office in 30 minutes or less. Instead, I spent 2 hours of my time being needlessly tested/measured/examined. I was charged $75 up front for an eye exam that I did not want or need, and I'm assuming they will also be billing my health insurance for all of the unwanted, unnecessary tests that were performed. The whole experience had a mechanical, factory feel to it. It wasn't until I was thoroughly frustrated and spoke rudely to the doctor that anyone actually listened to me. That's an incredibly damming statement about their practice. read more

To be honest, I never made it to the office. They charge $65 for "refraction". I have never encountered such a charge. The person I spoke with was unable to explain what procedures they would undertake if I declined this charge. This person also indicated that the doctor might still require it. I cancelled my appointment and am going back to my previous ophthalmologist who does not impose such a charge. I don't know why my PCP recommended this practice whereas I was receiving adequate care before. I will get in touch with her about this issue; perhaps she will no longer refer patients to these doctors. read more

In the meetings leading up to both procedures, and in the hospital, I found her to be approachable, engaged, and warm, and one of those physicians who takes the time to listen and respond. I recently called her office about an eye problem (not related to the procedure she performed), and she returned my call quickly. We discussed the problem, she listened, and then explained the cause and treatment, greatly relieving my concerns. I can't imagine going to any other ophthalmologist. read more

They follow the COVID19 guidelines for safety and temperature is taken prior to check-in along with the safety check list. Very professional staff. Lots of room to safely wait in the waiting room. Top of the line high tech equipment for tests. I also love that they have their own optometry shop at their office (across the hallway) with endless selections of designer eyewear and contacts. My doctor has been Andrew Sorenson for at least 15 years. Although he is a very good surgeon, his treatment of patients is patronizing. For example, after a refraction was completed by another doctor and she left to write up the order, Dr. Andrew walks in with it and announced he had changed it to what he thought would be better for me. And this after not doing the exam himself or even being in the room. This is only one example; a few times he has tried to change my glasses prescription, disregarding my past experiences with similar approaches. He doesn't listen to my input. Note: I've been wearing glasses or contacts since I was 8 years old. Also, his office staff is one of the most disorganized I have ever encountered. For example, at the beginning of our association, it took them three tries in 2 years to get my records from my previous doctor. The third time I asked, they opened my file and said, "Why here is your request, just sitting in the file." They behave like the stereotypical government clerk. They are rude, condescending, and arrogant. Most of this bad treatment is reserved for people who have questions and/or don't just accept everything they are told without any response. Its like they they don't want to have anything to do with people. I've put up with the office staff's attitude for years (it was only once a year and finding new doctors is hard) and the doctor's lack of consideration for patients' needs but it is time to find another ophthalmologist who will listen and has considerate office staff. read more

I was seen by this ophthalmology group last February 11th 2022 at the beginning of the exam A women optometers walked into the in the exam room. I explained to her I was only there for medical reason glaucoma check up.I advised the tech that refraction was not covered by any insurance company, and it has never never has been. the tech insisted that it was she stepped out of the room and came back and assured me that it was. I told her it is not and never has been. two weeks later. I received a bill from Sorenson and Sorenson ophthalmology. stating that I was responsible for this refraction bill I called and spoke with their business manager Linda she assured me that this was a mistake and that she would take care of it. And I would not responsible for the refraction bill. I advised her that if this continued, I would report them to the insurance Commission she told me this has been a problem with this particular tech and that she would take care of it. I recently found a report on my credit report showing that was turned over to a collection agency name PACIFIC CREDIT, 707-429-3211) dated 12/5/22, this is the first notice I have on this bill. funny never rec call from the office either. I feel that I am not responsible for this bill and the office committed fraud . as stated above I ask several times recently after seeing my credit report. I ask the business office linda to pls have this removed and corrected immediately. I wouldn't ever recommend this office nor the MD there they are shady and has no issue committing outright fraud. I have gone to this office for the past couple of years. Lately Dr Robert Sorensen scratched my cornea in error while taking out a stye! I was in pain that evening and my eye was never the same since then. I have been suffering for the last three months. Dr Robert Sorensen never called or checked on me. His office staff are not cordial and condescending. The Drs are impersonal. You would think I get some courtesy due to a problem that he created. None. I have a hard time making an appointment due to the cornea scratch. My eye has been tearful, itchy and I can no longer wear my contact lenses. This was a major error on his part and they are not even accommodating me with urgent appointments for a problem they created. They keep billing me for post op copays. I have not got a call from Dr Robert Sorensen. Total disregard for the patient. read more

Wow. I am having my an issue with seeing out one of my eyes and they were able to get me in to see an MD first thing in the AM. I had to bring my toddler with me and they were so sweet, pausing when I needed to attend to a need of hers, working around her sitting in my lap, and assuring me it wasn't an issue. After reading all the other reviews about this Opthalmology office, my experience made more sense to me. Wait, wait, wait is basically what you do when you come to this office. Dr. Sorenson is ok, but as others have said, lack the bedside manners, doctors in this age try to achieve to gain patient satisfaction. The staff are generally running around like chickens with their heads cut off. They made a surgery appointment for me when the doc was supposed to be out of the country. But the staff are not rude, just lacking in better organization and communication skills. Despite all that - I endured because I did not want to wait any longer for my cataract surgery. But if I could do it again, I definitely will not do it with this office. The optometry service across the hall - well, they are very rude and unprofessional. My vision became more blurry with the glasses I got there. And when I called to ask what can be done, the staff started grilling me why I didn't say so when I was at the store --- and just went on and on, yelling at me. Why go to work if you are having a bad day? What I can say is - don't be arrogant just because patients are spilling out of your office - it's not because you're great, it's because your staff is overbooking!!! I am not coming back. I will look for an eye office that is living in this generation - doctors and staff who aim for patient satisfaction and who care for their customers' time and well-being. When I heard I might have glaucoma, I went out and found these guys again-- now they have 3 generations of eye doctors working in that office! And they stopped my glaucoma in it's tracks! read more

Very long wait time (about 45 minutes), super inconvenient appointment times (8 AM and 9 AM) that were very hard to get, and the optometrist and the physician were really unhelpful. They just ran a few tests on me and gave me a few sample medications and told me I was done. They provided no treatment action plan nor did they bother to explain the diagnosis they made and what I could do to relieve my symptoms in the long term. I'd rather go to a nice boutique optometry to be assisted with my eye problems than this useless clinic. read more

Great service. Got me in right away to address an urgent appointment. Quick, although I thought it was going to be a full eye exam.

I needed an updated prescription to buy some prescription inserts for my snowboard goggles, and Sorenson & Sorenson was the only optometry clinic out of five that I called that had an available appointment within ten days. (And I'm a new patient! Some places don't accept new patients on Saturdays, for example). I was able to get an 8:15am basic eye exam on a Thursday, which was very convenient for my work schedule. I arrived a little early to fill out paperwork, and I was seen on time. My eyes were checked out first by one of the younger optometrists (I can't remember her name, unfortunately), and subsequently by Dr. Sorenson. I was out by 9am. The experience was efficient; the desk staff were helpful and kind; the optometrists gave me good advice and had good bedside manner (albeit for a low-stakes basic eye exam); and I got what I came for, an updated prescription. Unlike other reviewers, I didn't have an unreasonable wait time. I presume it's because I went early in the morning. Thank you, S&S! I'll be back in a year! read more

Twenty years ago (approximately) I had lazer done in both eyes. 20/15 vision! Done by the Sorenson family and assoc. Berkeley Ca. I just did a retouch in one eye. The whole process from start to finish was professional. (as we all navigate Covid) I will tell you that Mr. Andrew Sorenson is truly skilled at what he does. The staff from both his office and at the university performed at such a high level of knowledge, professionalism, and kindness, it was simply a well done experience!! I was referred to this office by my primary physician for an eye examination in connection to headaches. That examination is fully covered by my insurance, but the receptionist insisted that they also need to check if my eyeglass prescription which is not covered. The additional cost though would provide me with the new prescription. That seem to be reasonable, however the prescription provided missed a measurement of the distance between my eyes, that is necessary for new lense order. When I called to get this number, I was told that this number is required for online orders only. A receptionist promised to call me back with this measurement, but never did. My wife and I had to call a few times to ask for it, but in the end refused to provide me with it. Since the prescription is pretty useless without this measurement (unless I order lenses from the Sorenson & Sorenson, I presume) I asked for refund via email and never got any response. So I cancelled the payment with my credit card company and finally they forwarded to me the Sorenson's response - long and full of lies. Not only I will never do any business with this office, I have asked my primary physician to avoid referring any other patients to them. read more

My Mom has been seeing Sorenson & Sorenson since about 2015 when an accident left her with multiple eye issues. Mom sees Dr. Andrew, Dr. Janik as a back up, and Dr. Hanson for her optometry needs. I find both Dr. Sorenson and Dr. Janik very thorough and careful when examining my Mom. They are great with my Mom, explaining everything to her in her terms since she is elderly. Special mention goes to Dr. Hanson, who is extremely thorough and really thinks things through regarding the care and maintenance of my Mom's multiple problems. They have recently remodeled their offices, taking most of the second floor of 3010 Colby in Berkeley. The waiting room is now a little more spacious, the patient's ingress and egress a little more efficient than at the old office. My only concern with this practice is that the secret is out that this is a very good group of doctors - because wait times can extend to the unconscionable. Most appointments, from the annual check-ups to routine follow-ups take a whole afternoon. A recent appointment for an annual check-up (field vision test and optometry test) had my elderly Mom there for 3 hours - a 1 hour wait after her vision field test. I don't know, but I'm pretty sure at my Mom's age, there are other things she would like to do (play her ukulele, go to lunch with her friends, visit with her grandchildren) other than wait a full hour for her vision field test results to come in. So in the end, we find Sorenson & Sorenson excellent doctors. If fast, friendly and efficient service is key to your medical experience, then this may not be the office for you. Although I find the wait times super excessive and I wish we wouldn't spend so much time waiting to be seen, since it is just four times a year I don't think it bothers me enough not to go. I feel for some people it would be no bueno to have a routine annual check-up that lasts three hours or more. read more

Waiting room chairs are wiped down after each person leaves. You can see staff regularly using hand sanitiser after patient interactions. I had a stye that wouldn't go away on its own so I came to Sorenson to have it taken care of. Robert Sorenson was cordial and he performed the outpatient surgery with expertise. The office staff was super professional. I came in 3 consecutive weeks and one of the staff always remembered my name and greeted me warmly. I did not wait long for two of the appointments but for one of the appointments I waited almost an hour until the doctor was able to see me. However, the waiting lounge was comfy and there was WIFI, so it was not a big issue. The only thing that was inconvenient was that street parking was difficult and I had to park in the pay parking lot, which could get expensive if you had to wait long. read more

Dr. Andrew Sorenson recently performed cataract surgery on one of my eyes. As usual, the surgical procedure was followed by post-treatment. The surgery itself went OK, but the healing part is troubling. In following Dr. Sorenson's directions, during the three weeks after the surgery I only used some sterilization drops. After three weeks I returned to the doctor's office expecting to receive a new eyeglass prescription and be sent on my way. Instead, I was informed that the eye still had not healed, and advised to continue using the same drops for six more weeks. After that, at the second return visit, I was told that unfortunately my situation had not improved and even grew worse, so I was told to go to a specialist retina-treatment focus center for further treatment. I will not take the time to describe my further trajectory, that would only be a distraction. What I would like to emphasize here is that before heading off for retina treatment, I asked Dr. Sorenson couple a couple of questions: "Please tell me, doctor, how serious is my complication?" and "How unusual is my case?" And he replied, "This isn't serious, I wouldn't even call it a complication. And you are not an exception. One in every four or five of my patients develops a similar case." What is important to emphasize is that later I learned that this was in fact very much a quite serious complication. And the terrible statistics cited by the doctor (20-25%!) speaks loudly for itself. read more

I came in for an exam this morning, saw the optometrist, then saw the eye exam technician, then Dr. Lionel Sorenson. Overall, they were quite professional and attentive to my questions and issues. I would've preferred to not go through so many levels of people, but I appreciated that they were rather timely for the most part. Parking here can be quite a hassle, as there are a lot of other medical practices in the area, and Alta Bates Hospital is right up the street. They have a lot of people working hard here, and I appreciated the effort that they put in to keep the whole operation running. read more

Staff are super polite and caring. They are very friendly and they help making a doctor visit a fun experience and help you see better.
