I haven't been to Lulu's since I graduated 8 years ago, but it's just as good as I remembered it. The la Bella grilled mushroom appetizer with lemon oil is outstanding. I was a little disappointed in the fried green tomatoes- the breading was strange and they were very greasy. The service was great and drinks were reasonably priced. This is one of the best places to eat in town. The food is superb and the atmosphere is very welcoming. This place is usually classified as "hippie" food around the area, but it is delicious. If you want something different and what to try something new then I'm sure you can find something here. Note: Lunch is reasonably priced and you get most of the same things you can get at dinner for almost half the price. There are a few things for dinner that you can't get at lunch but you are paying Dinner time prices. My wife and I prefer to eat there for lunch. read more

We were visiting Sylva and sought out a place with vegetarian options. I had the Veg Stir-fry and it was OK. My wife had a Portobello mushroom sandwich and said it was good. Our waiter was fine. The ambiance was fine. Our table was extremely small and empty. This was OK. There were only two of us. Then a candle and flowers were added. A kind gesture but we needed the room. The problem was the speed with which we were served. It was way too speedy. I like to enjoy drinking and eating at a leisurely pace. The salad (wilted lettuce and chopped veg) was on the table before our first glass of wine was downed. The entree arrived even before our salads were finished. The table was very crowded. I guess they wanted us out of there. We left as soon as we could. Overall, it was not a great experience. read more

Went to Lulu's on a Friday evening at 6pm. Not overly busy but steady. Was there with a party of eight and in all honesty, the service level was really off. Our waitress just seemed out of her element. She kept bringing sweet tea after being told repeatedly unsweet. One of us never got the wine he ordered. When our entrees came, after serving six of us, she went to take drink orders from two other tables. So six of us were sitting with food getting cold while we waited for the other two to be served. After dinner, she cleared four plates away while leaving the other four. Why does this matter? Because when she bought dessert to the one person of our party, who ordered it, she literally pushed his finished entree plate to the side so she could serve his dessert. Here's a suggestion. CLEAR THE WHOLE TABLE! Sweet Onion in Waynesville has a comparable menu with much better service. We'll go there next time read more

If you are visiting the Sylva area - Lulu's is a great spot. Reasonably priced, warm & friendly atmosphere. If you are lucky enough - Butternut Squash Bisque -will be on the menu - delicious! I had the Chicken Tika Masala and it wasvery flavorful. My husband really enjoyed the Beef Bourguignon served over mashed potatoes. Worst experience ever....have eaten at Lulu's on Main numerous times and always had a great experience. My daughter and I were out shopping on Main St, Sylva and thought A bowl of soup on a blustery day would hit the spot so we headed into Lulu's...our waitress apparently didn't think much of us after we ordered as she put it "just the soup". She didn't bring my daughter her tea, no napkins and no bread like we have been accustomed to having on past visits so we asked for all 3...as she slapped the bread down on the table and informed us that bread doesn't come with "just the soup"! Still had to ask for napkins and my daughters sweet tea to which she rudely replied I'm a little busy right now it will be a minute...I asked for a manager and spoke to a nice guy named Justin...explained our dilemma with the waitress and hoped to end on a positive note with her before leaving...unfortunately, she didn't take it very well that we thought she was rude and proceeded to get very nasty with myself and my daughter as we were leaving in front of other patrons there. Needless to say she didn't receive a tip and we won't be returning to eat here anytime soon if that's the kind of behavior they allow from their employees...rudest waitress award goes to the short-dark haired middle aged waitress with a not so "southern" accent. read more

Visiting WCU, and stopped here for dinner with the family. I had the grilled mahi mahi, while the fish and corn salsa was absolutely wonderful. Fish was cooked perfectly,nicely grilled and tender. The corn salsa was sweet but a such nice compliment with fish. Howvever, the vegetables werr very bland and needed some seasoning and maybe a splash of lemon. Service was good and not bad prices for the food, my dish was $15. Overall good experience. read more

First time to Lulu's with my family and it's was great. Food was amazing the hummus dip is to die for and the Mediterranean pita is phenomenal. If we only got appetizers I would be happy with just those but the food is even better. It is lunch time so the lunch menu was out and we ordered sandwiches. I ordered fried green tomatoes and asked for them without the crab meat, and they brought it out with the crab meat on it. I thought, no big deal, it happens. I asked if they would give me a new order and they took it away. When they brought it back out it looked fine, no crab meat in sight, so I began eating. Halfway through the first tomato, I tasted something weird. I turned the tomatoes over to discover that they had just scraped some of the crab off. I was appalled. If I had been allergic, it could have turned out much worse for me, but especially for them as an establishment. Even the waitress was appalled. Horrible restaurant. read more

I'm a local who has been eating here for over 20 years. I was delighted when the new owners redecorated and added a full bar and steak to the menu. I'm also delighted they kept the tahini dressing for salads (delicious). My daughter lives on the west coast and is also extremely fond of the chicken a la grec-always orders it when she's home. We were in the other night and noticed the prices have really gone up. It kept my husband from ordering a steak. Don't know if it's just for summer tourists, or what, but still a favorite of this local. I would've given 5 stars except for the pricey hike in a poor county. read more

Had dinner there while in the mountains for a couple days - the hotel recommended it. It's a unique, quaint place with outdoor seating. I order the southwestern salad - very good and a good portion too (I had to get a to-go box). My fiancé got the steak and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Our server was extremely nice and on point with service. He even gave us recommendations on where to hike. The meal so was filling that we didn't get dessert, but they all sounded very very good. I am physically still sitting in the restaurant as I type this.... It's been awhile since I'd been back to Lulu's-having had inconsistent food/service over the last year and a half. Regardless we decided to give it another try... Long story short, the food was VERY good but the waitress was clueless. Having been seated and brought waters by the hostess the waitress came rushing in the front door and directly to the table, apparently from a smoke break. She didn't ask about appetizers or drinks, just if we were ready to order. We had to ask if there were specials, of which we ordered both. She simply pointed to a section on the menu which explained the options of sides, salad dressings, etc.... After the food arrived and HAVING TO ASK for bread with the meal, we received TWO small pieces of bread and a single pat of frozen butter.... Upon later asking for more bread we were told that the oven had been turned off and that no more bread was available..... REALLY??? You didn't bake it in house... Can you REALLY NOT EVEN HEAT SOME BREAD?!?!?! Additionally, there was a tri-fold display card on the table advertising an upcoming event at the restaurant whereby on a particular night a percentage of the sales would be donated to local non-profits... My girlfriend asked the waitress what she knew of the event only to have her pick it up and read 'verbatim' what was on the card.... We simply stared at each other in disbelief..... finished our wine, left her an overwhelmingly-too-large of tip of 15% based on her skill and interest in her job, and left the restaurant. It's unfortunate, we LIKE Sylva, it's people, and it's restaurants, but unfortunately this is just more of the same old thing... Someone comes to town, opens or purchases a restaurant with great intentions, creativity and work ethic only to entice people to come to their establishment and then consistently over time lose interest and care in turning out good food and/or good service, or both. I would say that of the number of restaurants in Sylva that Lulu's has the ability of consistently being in the top two, but unfortunately with such poor service will not consistently see the benefit of being able to turn out good food. I, as well as most diners with any true 'taste' require a 'full experience' of a meal out that commands $18-$25 per plate. Lulu's missed the mark tonight. read more

Disappointed again at Lulu's ! We knew the acoustics would be bad in the main room, so we chose a table down the side. Sound was better but it was freezing! Ordered hot tea to warm up. On the menu the tea said "Artisan Tea". It had a tag of the Wal-Mart brand! The crabcake was mediocre and covered with chopped red onion with a few greens. The result was major indigestion for the rest of the day! Lulu's is scratched off our list for dining in Sylva! read more

Bland & Over Priced!!! Decided to have Date Night after months of quarantine. Nice restaurant when you walk in and our server was very nice. Small menu, which I love because that usually means they do everything to perfection. Not the case here. We got the fried green tomatoes for an app. The "crab topping" was basically crab out of a can (water and all) with a scoop of mayo. My husband ordered the chicken piccata and it was as if they just threw the noodles on the plant without dressing them at all. Very bland! Almost no flavor at all. I got the portobello mushroom entree and was less than impressed. The menu listed on their website is not the menu they are currently using. Maybe due to corona, which may also be the issue with the food. Maybe the chef/cook was just off their game. And to add insult to injury...with 2 glasses of wine each our bill was almost $100!!! Definitely not going back. Their lunch and sandwiches may be their shinning point. I don't know how the other reviews are so good. But we had an awful experience. Brought our leftovers home (basically the whole meals) and doctored them up with flavor and seasonings and finished date night. read more

The food was pretty darn good. La Bella was a great starter dish with the lemon-oil dip or the gorgonzola dip and I thoroughly enjoyed the Spinach and walnut ravioli I ordered. The restaurant seems more Vegan than anything, so I would recommend not really ordering on the chicken side but stick to fish if you want a protein. Definitely a place to check out and enjoy a nice dinner with delicious food. read more

Nestled in a cute downtown area. We were greeted and sat in a requested booth. There is not much ambiance, so I was hoping that meant the food would be great, you know how those go together sometimes. The menu was interesting and I was happy to see that they offered some Vegan selections. My mom was with me and she is about the least picky person there is. She got the burger and said it was aweful. She also did not like the sesame sticks that seem to be the side with many of the dishes. I ordered the soup, salad, and 1/2 sandwhich. Soup was not really good, I took a couple of bites, but didn't eat it. Salad had a cucumber slice and a roma tomato slice and some lettuce, yeah, that was it. Sandwhich was tofu, grilled nicely, but VERY bland. We each had water to drink it the bill was just over $20 with tip. A bit pricey in my opinion for lunch and the food was nothing I would go back for. read more

The atmosphere here is pretty cute with nice big paintings and a funky (in a good way) layout. Not to loud or too quiet. There is an outside patio area that is dog friendly. The food was okish, with some vegetarian choices , the normal kids meals, and a slight relunctance to bring bread and butter. I was dissapointed with the frijoles negros, it was black beans from a can dumped on watery brown rice. Super yuck! The pasta lovers at my table gobbled down their food and the waitresses were nice. I hate to give 2 stars but the frijoles were an embrassment to cooks and Cubans. read more

Beyond disappointing. I always give a restaurant two chances, but I might break my rule this time. Mediocre food, bad service, trailer trash atmosphere. Ugh. Dinner this past week: The decor and appearance is not only outdated, but is in need of repair and replacement. Vinyl tablecloths. Really? Torn upholstery in booths that make for uncomfortable seating and looks nasty. Cooks smoking in front of the restaurant next door and then coming in to cook our dinner. That's just great. More on that later... The pasta tasted like the kind you buy in the refrigerated section of the grocery store, and it was undercooked. The montrachet artichoke spread on Annie's bruschetta: there was barely any spread on the bread, it was bland, and the only good aspect of the dish was that the bread (not made there!) was tasty. The salad had so much dressing dumped on it, it was drowning. The waitress took our order, brought incorrectly made drinks, brought the food, and the bill. That was it. Never returned to ask how our meal was. Sometimes you continue to eat the food because you are so hungry and you are already sitting down; this was the case for us. It's even more disappointing because others have lauded the meals there. My guy has been there many times for lunch and once for dinner. This was my first time. We've been going to Lulu's for years. The last two years have been great, especially after they got some ventilation into the dining area and you no longer smelled like the kitchen when you left. Last night however was a complete disappointment. Lulu's is in the process of changing locations, and from the lack of A/C (blamed the landlord) and underwhelming food (my $29 ribeye special was easily 50% fat and grizzle), I think they've already left the building. With that level of poor quality, they should just shut their doors now and wait until they move. Our server Hanna was excellent, but she had to spend most of the evening apologizing for an understaffed kitchen. There may have been six tables occupied in the whole place, and the kitchen could not keep up. As a local, Lulu's is a good go-to option and a nice place to take clients and visitors, but I don't think I'll be going back until they get settled in their new place. read more

Quaint restaurant by Western Carolina University. My vegetarian son would of loved. However the omnivores in his family also thoroughly enjoyed. My husband and I both had salads with either chicken or fish. The homemade dressings were awesome. My son had the burritos and asked for chicken to be added - he really liked. If I've said it once I've said it 1000 times. If what you want to eat isn't on the menu ask to speak to the chef. Today while in Sylva NC we stopped for lunch at LuLu's on Main St. Sherri was craving a steak...not on the lunch menu the hostess told me. She then suggested maybe I could get a steak at Bogarts across town. Just then the chef and owner, Devan walked out of the kitchen. I asked him if I could get a steak and some fresh veggies....How thick would you like your ribeye's sir, he responded with a smile What happened next was wonderful. Fantastic aged USDA Chicago stockyard beef cooked over a coal fire to perfection. A platter of fresh local veggies which consisted of sauted spinach, broccolini, green beans with bacon and portabello mushrooms. All the veggies were cooked perfectly and coated with a bit of spice, sweet cream butter and olive oil. The steaks were a good 16 ounces each and melted in our mouths. Ahead of the steaks came a wonderful house salad of mixed fresh greens, sprouts and local black tomatoes. All dressings are home made and I chose lemon oil, Sherri chose ranch. The house cab was very good served in an overfilled large wine goblet for 4 bucks. By the time we had finished our meals and enjoyed 2 glasses of wine each we still had a good amount of food to bring home. The bill you must now want to know....$56.00 pre tip! I rate this meal a 10 out of 10. The place itself is not where you'd expect to find such a great meal but it is homey and comfortable, unrushed and personable.
