I ended up trying Luling BBQ over Memorial Day weekend kind of on accident. I'd been meaning to check this place out for a while, but it took the realization that I had no cash on me and therefore couldn't hit Luling City Market to send me across the street to Luling BBQ's red barn. The place lacks the charm and history of Luling City Market, but is a fine alternative if the lines are too long at LCM or if you don't have any cash. All in all I was pleasantly surprised and will definitely be back, if only for the jalapeno sausage and the BBQ sauce! Here is a breakdown of the Q... Brisket - 4 stars - Moist, tender, good bark Pork Ribs - 4.5 stars - falling off the bone, good rub Chicken - 3 stars - a little dry, but good smoke flavor Jalapeno Sausage - 5 stars - excelent, good spice flavor, tender casing Sauce - 5 star! We had been told that we could call ahead to reserve food. So I called around noon and placed a 'reservation.' When I showed up at the pickup time, the only thing left the burnt end of a brisket and sausage. I was told by the manager that I don't understand the business and so many people will call and not pick up their food that the 'reservation' isn't a guarantee. He could have told me this on the phone before I talked it up to my family that was in town from out of state/drove 20 minutes out of my way. He made sure to laugh at me and my apparent stupidity as to the BBQ business. I had talked to him about maybe catering my wedding but he has obviously lost that business. I've lived in the area for two years and have watched this establishment steadily decline due to horrendous service. The manager is one of the most arrogant jerks I've ever met. First I've ever eaten here, usually eat at Luling City Market but I decided to try this place. I was disappointed in the quality of the meat that was served here. I ordered moist brisket and then saw the worker behind the counter cutting into the brisket as if she was sawing wood. That should've been my indicator. The brisket was extremely tough and chewy. For sides I had the macaroni and cheese, which tasted like it came out of a box. On a plus side the service was nice, the ladies working the counter were polite and sweet. Considering I mostly eat from the BBQ trailers in Austin where tender fall-apart brisket is the standard, this review will probably sound prejudiced. But the wise man once said "with BBQ, the money is in the meat" if you can't get the meat right, the rest doesn't matter. read more

It's not like it used to be and SURELY not worth being humiliated for! I've had better bbq many other places and was served at those other places with dignity and gratitude! It became a ritual of ours to stop here monthly for the past 5 months taking my son to and from school at Texas State. We would spend anywhere from $50 to $80 each visit getting bbq to go [to share with family in Houston]...UNFORTUNATELY, I WILL NEVER RETURN AFTER THE WAY I WAS TREATED TODAY!! It's heartbreaking how some people are in this world. I don't quite understand why racism still exists, but it does! I purchased $80 of bbq to go and was given 2 small condiment-sized containers, so my husband asked for a larger container of sauce to go with it and Gary asked why! WHY?? My brother raves about this place all the time, so I finally made a pit stop on my way from Houston to San Antonio. This is a tiny shop that isn't much to look at; the seats are pretty worn, and you wouldn't think it was anything significant. However, the food here is mouth-watering delicious! I got a beef brisket plate (~$9) which comes with about 1/4 pound of beef and two sides of your choice. I ordered the Macaroni&Cheese and the Broccoli. The Mac&Cheese was pretty good, but nothing special. The Broccoli wasn't my favorite because it was like a coleslaw, slathered in Mayo (not a fan). I should've ordered the green beans, which were sooo much better. As for the most important part: The meat here is AMAZING. The beef brisket is so tender, it seems to melt in your mouth. The BBQ sauce isn't too sweet, nor is it oily and thick, so it pairs really well with the meat. I also tried a bit of their sausage, which was also fantastic! This is probably the best BBQ I've ever had, granted, I'm not a huge BBQ fan, so i don't eat it much. A plate is definitely enough food for one person and can probably feed you for more than 1 meal if you have a smaller appetite. read more

We walked in and the 3 staff there were very rude but an older lady with blond wavy hair with a braid and red glasses was being just plain mean. My husband and I were driving through on our way home to Austin and stopped in to City Market for bbq (they have great yelp reviews) and found them closed. We walked across the street to this place instead. It was a mistake. I'm not usually for writing scathing reviews after one visit, but this placed deserves it. If it saves a few passers-through from making the same mistake, here is my honest assessment. Food: They were out of brisket, and the girl taking our order said we could replace the brisket/ribs combo with a chicken/sausage/ribs combo. We went with that and checked out to a whopping $40. Puzzled, but hungry, we proceeded to sit down and eat. The sides are not great. They don't have sauerkraut. The sauce tastes like a cup of sugar, some canned tomato sauce, and too much black pepper were thrown together. There is no smoke flavor to this bbq. They could've cooked it in their oven for all I could tell. The ribs were tender, but no flavor. The chicken was so dried out and overcooked that parts of the meat was so tough it was inedible. We didn't get to try the sausage (see next section). Service: At check out, the checkout lady tells us our drink options (tea, cokes, bottled water). We ask if we can just get some tap water. She replies with, "we have tea, coke, or bottled water." The witch couldn't just say "no, we don't serve tap water." Rude and puzzling. After starting on our food, we realized we didn't get the sausage. A look at our receipt shows that it is not itemized, so my husband goes up to ask and the checkout lady says, "I only ring up what comes down the line." When questioned about the price of chicken and ribs (to compare to the combo we thought we got), she would have none of that. The witch ripped us off for crappy food. Atmosphere: We sat inside and had to swat away flies and cover our food the whole time. A dying cockroach lay miserably by my feet while I ate. The lesson I learned: If you want BBQ, keep going to Lockhart if City Market is closed. read more

Heading to San Marcos for some shopping we decided to stop and have lunch at Luling's first. Bringing an appetite we didn't mind waiting in the long line because we knew what was ahead of us - yummy good! The line moved fairly quickly, and I found an empty booth pretty easily and fork/knife in hand, I was prepared! As soon as my better half sat down and unfolded the brown parchment paper I was already salivating. Where to begin?! The brisket was moist, tender, and had just the right amount of marbled fat, and the sausage was so juicy and well seasoned. I was slightly disappointed in the ribs. The one piece I had was dry, but I enjoyed chewing the rib tip! We didn't even bother to get any sides because we really just wanted to fill up on the meats. Got here at 3pm on Memorial Day, they sold out of most things, but got some pork ribs. Not the smokiest ribs, very tender, but lacks some flavor. Although I would call these the perfect pickle and onion rib, piece of rib plus a pickle and slice of onion. Bbq sauce is a little sweet and not very thick but ok. The smoked turkey here is probably the best turkey I've ever had. It's tender, lean, and permeated with a delicious smoke flavor. Very unique and memorable. I wish I could have them prepare my turkey for Thanksgiving. While City Market across the street overshadows this place, I think it's worth stopping by for, if nothing else, a taste of the turkey. read more

I don't cook meat, and I almost never eat it. But when I drive through Luling, that is out the door. Luling barbecue has some of the best turkey I've had. It is smoky and juicy, and served with their tasty, mustardy barbecue sauce. They also offer a number of sides, including the usual potato salad and cole slaw, but they also offer some delicious options like broccoli salad and a pea and cheese salad. Haven't tried dessert but the banana pudding is on my list to try. Expect a wait on a weekend, but it's worth it. In a town full of seriously good barbecue, this place deserves a try if you love turkey. read more

Decent food, city market is actually better. We ordered plate meal and sandwich. Meat was slightly tough. Potato salad had mashed potato look and we only ate a little bit of it. We heard about this place from a coworker. They gave really good reviews so we decided to try it. It was not at all what we were told it be. We came early drove over an hour to get there we arrived at 10:30 there was no line we were happy. We ordered immediately and I got the brisket,ribs, and sausage with potato salad and macaroni, my friend got chicken and brisket with potato salad and macaroni and cheese, her son got a turkey sandwich. The ribs were hard to bite apart, the brisket was so hard that we felt we were biting the cow. The sides tasted worst than Kraft Mac and cheese and the potato salad tasted less than store bought. We was highly disappointed. Later that day after we left all three of us had diarrhea and we did not eat anything else that day. (Sorry too much information).
