The food was great. Service was friendly. I didnt get to try their pork steak which they are apparently known for for serving. Overall a solid BBQ joint.

As a huge BBQ lover, any time I roadtrip or travel to a new town, one of the first things I do is look BBQ spots in the area. This is how I found out about Baker Boys. I Stopped in recently around 11:30am one Friday morning on a day trip to Gonzales to do some history sightseeing. The large parking lot was pretty empty when I arrived so I had my pick of the spots. When I walked in I followed the delicious smells right up to the front where I was the only person in line. Wanting to sample a couple of things, I went with a three meat plate with the pork loin, marbled brisket, and sausage. The sausage was crumblier and leaner than I like and the marbled had close to a gas grill taste to it that wasn't my favorite although the bark was tasty and the meat good and moist. The pork loin was my favorite of the three but I wished it had more of its yummy raspberry sauce on it. The sides were yummy with the mac and cheese and giblet rice being solid choices and I also really enjoyed the house bbq sauce. It complemented the brisket and sausage really well. The staff helping me behind the counter was also super sweet and friendly and patiently answered all my questions about the food and the little town of Gonzales. Overall, it wasn't Texas Top 50 caliber to me and I wouldn't go out of my way to make a trek just to visit this spot BUT if i'm ever back in town visiting I'd go again for a solid and enjoyable BBQ meal.

Met a friend and her husband for lunch, and she wanted to meet here. This was my first time eating at Baker Boys, and I had a little difficult time finding it. (Don't come to the area very often.) The food was mediocre and a little expensive for the portion of food received. Everything is a la carte. The tables are also communal seating. Otherwise, I had a good experience. The whole operation was very well-run process, and the property seemed clean. I would definitely eat here again!

Was passing through Gonzales and decided to stop for bbq. Arrived about 230p and place was empty, must have just missed the lunch rush. The bbq smell when walking in was mesmerizing. Staff greeted us as we walked in. I got the 2 meat plate with brisket and pork loin with 2 sides of potato salad and green beans. Brisket was cooked perfectly, fork tender and juicy. Pork loin was just okay, as were green beans. Potato salad was creamy with a great mayo and dill pickle flavor. When in area will definitely stop again and try the sausage and ribs.

Chicken and Pork Loin were absolutely great!

In my pursuit of visiting all of the Top 50, our travels led us to Baker Boys BBQ in Gonzalez, TX! Upon walking in, the ambiance was giving me old school mess hall military vibes which was perfect. I also want to comment on how friendly all the staff was too. Smoked sausage had very good flavor but something to note is it's the kind of smoked sausage that's in that tight kinda chewy casing and the meat inside was a little crumbly, not really emulsified all the way. The brisket was above average. Definitely worth a taste. The real stars of the show were the smoked chicken with its super crispy skin and moist meaty interior and the pork loin which was absolutely divine - damn near perfect. The only thing that was disappointing was the potato salad. Not saying it's Walmart potato salad, but it kind of tasted like it. Either way come and see for yourselves!

Very good BBQ. Big portions compared to a lot of other places. I had pork ribs, brisket & sausage. Comfortable spacious digs.

We've been coming to Gonzales for years for the Texas State Junior High Rodeo Finals and finally tried this place. Being from Llano (home of Coopers BBQ), we honestly don't try BBQ at many places when we travel. This place was REALLY GOOD. Nice restaurant, great service, huge portions, low price and most importantly- EXCELLENT TEXAS BBQ. You won't be disappointed!! Eat here now!

    Best take out box, EVER.

I always think you should rate a place according to it's class. If you rate a fast food restaurant, I compare it to other fast foods. Not to fine dining. Similarly, when I rate a Texas Monthly Top-50, it should be the best of the best in Texas. Sadly, this place didn't come close. Don't get me wrong. The food was good. If I just pulled up or lived local, I would likely enjoy it. But my experience, it was definitely out of its league. I arrived at 1:30pm and there was no line. So perhaps I was there too late. Whatever, I call 'em as I see 'em. The place was ginormous and quite the operation. It was a huge metal building that had been turned into a BBQ joint. Even had a well defined drive in. When I came thru, more folks were doing the drive thru than coming in. I went with the two meat platter in order to surf around the options. For the first meat, I went with the brisket. NOT a Top anything there. I sadly didn't pick up any bbq sauce. Likely it would have helped a lot. The brisket was mildly smoky with way too much texture. The pork loin was almost unappetizing. It was very rubbery, chewy and was all I could do to gnaw it down. I tried one of the slices and then just quit. The sides started to redeem the place. I started with the green beans. Those are an all time favorite of mine. Always reminds me of home. This was almost like the ending of Ratatouille. Where the mouse brought the curmudgeon to his mom's cooking. I was instantly transported to Mom. Loved it and love her. The second side was the potato salad. Again, the sides kicked butt on the meats. Most potato salad is an amorphous mass of sameness. This was literally little cubes of potatoes, soft, wonderful starch surrounded by the normal potato salad mixings. It was truly unique that everything had it's own place in harmony rather than one same taste. You just have to trust me on this and go with it. It worked rather well. I finished off with a bit of pecan pie. I always joke that I've never met a pecan pie that I didn't like. This continued the trend of pecan pies that hit me just right. It wasn't anything to rave about, but if you want a solid pecan pie - this is it. Overall, if I lived local, I'd give it a shot again. However, definitely not a destination meal of the Texas Top-50's.

Eating BBQ in Texas. Once again Baker Boys BBQ in Gonzales Texas made the list! Went to Baker Boys BBQ on a Monday. Great day to drive and get some great BBQ. When driving to Baker Boys BBQ make sure to look for the white sign and the cannon. This place has a drive thru, eat inside dining room & eat outside also. Had a bit there and got some to bring home. Had some moist & lean brisket, some sausage along with some cheesy potatoes & 2 jalapeños. Arrived around 1pm and the place was a bit busy at drive thru but inside the line was short and fast. You order your brisket first then your sides then your others, onions, pickles, jalapeños. Please note they do charge for the jalapeños but the pickles and onions are complimentary. The place has a large dining room. And plenty of parking when you get there just follow the great smell of BBQ up to the front to place your order. Enjoy.

Come and taste it! You're instantly greeted with Texas history. The warehouse looking dining room is surprisingly cozy. The staff is attentive and very friendly. Great bbq, you won't regret a visit!

This used to be one of our favorite Texas BBQ places. The place is still clean and service is friendly. Unfortunately, the sausage was dry and the bread was stale. The banana pudding just isn't what it used to be. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and give it 4 stars. My previous visits were all 5 stars, but today was probably 2 or 3. Sadly, after this experience it's not worth driving out of my way for. There are too many other exceptional BBQ places nearby.

Texas BBQ served with a smile. A plate of Baker Boys brisket and sides will fill you up for the day. The meat was super-tender with great flavor. No need for sauce. The sides did not disappoint- Mac n cheese and green beans were a hit. If you're in Gonzales and in the mood for awesome Texas barbecue, Baker Boys is a great place to stop and feed the whole family.

Well, there's another one called "City Market" that skipped right past me. Or, no one thought to tell me. It's one or the other because this place is pretty popular with lines out the door! So I heard about City Market BBQ, the same day I drove to Luling, Texas! It's an hour outside of Austin. City Market is in the downtown area, and parking was a breeze; the line I saw on the sidewalk coming from City Market, I must admit, was long, but it was a breeze, too. Now, this is on Wednesday, not the weekend. I hopped in line, the line moving fast. People are friendly, telling me that once I'm inside, there's another door I will go into to place my order. I like to call this the secret door with all the good smells of smoky barbecue. Check out my pictures of the secret door; you can't even see inside. I'm there, I made it inside, and there's 3 of the most friendly older gentlemen I will ever meet in my life. One of them caught on that I haven't been in a kitchen, never in my life, when he started asking if I wanted 1/4 of brisket. I whispered, "Give me three or four, because I'm not good at math either." Oh, we had a great laugh! I sat down, picked on a rib, and the meat slid from the bone! It was so tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The skin had the right burnt in the right spots. The meat was moist and easy to chew. I was like the Flintstones cleaning the bones before I bit into my sausage and brisket. The sausage was very good, and my brisket was smoky, like my ribs. I have to brag about the sauce. It came in a skinny bottle. It was a new flavor for me; it wasn't spicy, but it had a nice heat to it that I loved! I'm so happy I chose to ride down to Luling to visit City Market as soon as I heard about this BBQ place. I would have been so mad at myself if I had waited and forgotten!

So as of 2026, the barbecue place is about 68 years old. It's considered one of the classic old-school Central Texas barbecue joints and still operates much like a traditional meat-market-style BBQ house. This is an older building, including bathrooms... One of which was not working. Was disappointed that their sides include potato salad, and beans only because when I go to barbecue, I love Colliard greens, potato salad, beet salad, etc. not available here. The brisket slice I had likely the best piece of brisket I've ever had in my life. Now... Don't go crazy. I don't eat brisket typically when I do barbecue. The rib that I had was decent. The sausage I had by comparison to other barbecue places was unfortunately the worst that I've ever had. I'm not sure what grind they use, but it seems like it was more beef and somewhat sweet to my pallet which I personally don't care for in sausage. Overall, if I just wanted brisket, I would return but next time I'm in Luling I likely will go to the place right next-door to them and try them.

Yes, it is that good. Maybe because it's located in Lockhart instead of somewhere like Austin, it doesn't feel overly hyped yet, which honestly might be a good thing. This humble little shop operates with very limited hours but offers exceptional quality food. They open at 11 AM, and I arrived around 10:30 AM, but there was already a line. That tells you everything: you need to get there early. They did start letting people in a little early, which was nice. Like many great BBQ places, even if they say they close at 3 PM, there's a good chance the meat will sell out much earlier. The owner and pitmaster was super friendly and passionate. Even with a long line, she still greeted customers and had a quick conversation with each person, which was honestly impressive. As for the BBQ itself, I tried the ribs, brisket, lamb chops, sausage, green spaghetti, and pudding. Everything was perfection. Yes, I'll say it again: pure perfection, even the bread. When it was my turn, it was hard to find seating, so I ended up bringing the food home, but it was still incredibly delicious. This is BBQ on an entirely different level. My suggestion: come try this place before it goes viral and becomes a huge hype spot. When we arrived at the counter, and they handed us bite-sized brisket samples while we waited. One look at that glossy, glistening brisket told you everything--you knew it was going to be insanely juicy, and it delivered. The lamb chops were a standout this time--perfectly cooked with a flavorful herbed crust and paired with a mustard-based BBQ sauce that really set them apart. We also tried the "experimental" herbalicious sausage, and wow--it needs to become permanent. Packed with flavor and totally unique. Portions were generous (again), and we walked away with plenty of leftovers--which is never a bad thing when it tastes this good.

But, I'm open-minded (by open-minded I mean I gravitate to places with at least four and a half stars on Google). Enter Blacks, which looks like an eccentric Heartland cousin's hunting lodge married a school cafeteria. This place would shock those who require microgreens so tiny you need a jeweler's loupe to appreciate them. Ah but, brisket happens. It's a melt-in-your-mouth revelation served on butcher paper like it's no big deal. I took one bite, and basically ascended into a realm of flavor nirvana where time slowed and the only thing that mattered was bark, and each smoky, delicate bite. Skip the "Texas-style" place in Brooklyn. Fly west. Black's in the capital of Texas BBQ. Not even Madison Avenue PR spin could craft a crown more convincingly.

Then we had to deal with the wonderful smell for the hour-long ride home. Service was very fast, as there wasn't a line on Wednesday. Of course, everything was very tasty. However, IMO, everything was overpriced. Seriously, about $9 for maybe a pound of potato salad or slaw or beans and $34 a pound for the meat. Yes, I'm aware of yield... and that the price of beef has risen a lot. Whatever the market will bear, I guess, but this isn't something I'd do on a regular basis.

This time instead of exploring their packaged snack products I thought about how much room we have left in our car and flying it home so I decided against it. I did buy 3 of their small cup size Blue Bell dark chocolate ice cream- for all of us but the cashier gave only one spoon. It tasted so good I had hubs go get me a large size one since I didn't eat a normal lunch and it was past 5 pm. While I waited in the car with the grandpup. I wanted to find some Bucee items for Doc since she's been our road trip driver plus made all the arrangements for hotels, tickets to parks, dinner show, etc. We all got different things: hubs got small bags of jerky, Doc got her favorite brisket sandwich to share with her Frenchie, a sausage on a stick and 3 peach cobblers for each of us to try. I like the large amount of clean restroom stalls plus soap. The cone of warmed sugary pecans and cinnamon bites were a sweet snack- finally gone from the first Buc-ee's a week ago. Before leaving Doc had us take a selfie and a nice gentleman also took a couple for us too.
