This review is for the cafe in the back. Umm, bacon - let that word start to resonate in your mind. I was hungry while driving between Houston and San Antonio. Not expecting much for being out in the country, I decided to hit up Yelp for lunch. Well, today was a lucky spin. Imagine a cold winter day. You're in the house trying to get warm. The only thing that feels good is a warm blanket. Why does this matter? When I opened my bacon cheeseburger, there was literally a bacon blanket covering the inside of my burger. As I closed the burger and brought it to my mouth for the first bite, it was like the music video for Loverboy's Almost Paradise song. I'm not even kidding -- not only was the burger solid, but there was an appropriate bacon overload. Some bacon fell out, but there was still plenty of bacon in the burger. Oh, and don't worry -- I didn't leave a fallen bacon behind. I will post a picture of the burger. I had ordered onion rings as well, but truthfully I never made it to them. I was full about halfway through my burger. I devoted all of my strength to taking down edible work of art. Man won with the burger, but the onion rings were orphaned. If you're driving between Houston and San Antonio, stop by. They take all major credit cards. It's only 2 minutes or so off the highway. I can't wait to stop back by this place. Wonderful surprise on a last minute Texas roadtrip. The market looks pretty much like a convenience store in the front, but walk to the back room and you'll find a bunch of picnic tables and the entrance to the smokehouse - just follow the aroma! The brisket was awesome and was was a welcome treat vs. the restaurant choices we saw off the highway. Well worth a short detour. I have only been here a few times, but the food has been good every time. I would recommend this place to someone, especially if you want to avoid fast food burger place. The amount of seating is lacking. But my orders were out to me in a reasonable amount of time. I haven't tried the BBQ yet, but will go back to try it. read more

The previous reviews tell the story about the place. We had breakfast, ordered at the walk up window from the menu she had there. The people weren't very friendly and no one spoke to us, it seemed really awkward, like they really didn't care about you as a customer. But we ordered and sat at the picnic style table. Oh, I had to get the coffee from the store drink counter. Which I didn't mind getting my coffee....The food came and was OK, it was cooked like we ordered. My husbands knife wasn't clean and my fork felt greasy. I didn't tell them but I wiped my fork off and we lay the knife aside. I probably wouldn't stop in again for breakfast, although maybe for their barbecue. It was a unique experience and was definitely a local spot, maybe the only spot in Waelder. read more

This place is Amazing!!! The Best BBQ I have ever tasted. Take a drive and go see Cody. He is great. This will be my go to BBQ Place when I come visit family once a year. Totally worth the 83 mile drive!!! I tried the brisket which melts in your mouth. The fajitas tender, juicy and flavorful. The links great they are in house made! Waelder is a blip on the map between San Houston and San Antonio. We decided to stop at the blip and check out the market. You walk in and the market is at the front of the store. Keep walking to the back past the ice cream and you will get to the restaurant. Picnic tables are there for you to sit and eat. Chicken fried steak was available, but we decided on the cheeseburger. #thebomb.comjuicyanddelicious (see attached pic) The 1/2 lb burger really didn't need a lot of French fries....to top it off, I walked into the smokehouse. This is a little hole in the wall place on US Hwy 90 (which parallels I-10) in Waelder, behind what might pass for a convenience store, but you have to go back past that. There's a kitchen that serves bodacious breakfast tacos and lunch specials. But if you take a left you go into a room that has some old time BBQ pits where you watch them carve your order to perfection and some of the best BBQ I've ever had and I've been to plenty of BBQ joints including many of Texas Monthly's top 50. The BBQ pits are not open every day. Don't hold me to this, but I think they're open Thursday through Sunday. read more

The cafe was closed and the smoke house the back was open. We bought some fajita, pork ribs and sausage. The sausage was the best by far seasoned deliciously with a little spicy kick. The other meats were tender and smoky flavored although not nearly as flavorful as the sausage. The place is full of friendly cowboys and locals. read more

After sitting in wait for around 5 minutes, they got up and put aprons on, and walked into the kitchen, still failing to acknowledge us. Felt like We didn't exist. We heard that Crossvine Market BBQ opened in Waelder and rode down to check it out. We were told that the new owners still are making the famous sausage rings. The 100 year old building still has charm in this old town. Front of the store is a small grocery-deli, but it's in the back where the culinary BBQ magic takes place. Great moist brisket and the sausage rings live up to their history. If you're looking for fancy, it ain't here, just good ol Texas BBQ-the way it should be. read more

Come Hungry, Leave Happy! A friend recommended this place to me, and so I decided to give it a try. The outside of the place is nondescript - you might otherwise miss it if it wasn't for the 30 mph speed limit and the single stop sign nearby. The inside is like an old five-and-dime - they sell a little bit of everything. It was neat just exploring the items on the shelves. But that's not why I came - I came for the food! As I headed past the various sundries on the shelves, a small room in the back appeared through a doorway. The room was quaint, but clean, with several picnic-style tables arranged around the room. After a minute or so, a gentlemen appeared to take my order (I later found out that the gentlemen was Troy - the "head chef"). The menu was not extensive (about a page long), but it had all the essentials - you know, burgers, fries, onion rings, BBQ sandwiches, etc. Troy recommended the burger because it was Tuesday night - and, hey, that's exactly what I wanted to try! Just so you know, everything about the burger is freshly made to order, so you shouldn't expect an "in and out" experience. In fact, you should probably start planning your method of attack now. I ordered a single patty cheeseburger with jalapeños and bacon, and what came out was a beauty to behold. The ground beef was perfectly cooked, the bun was soft, yet worthy of the burger between, and the veggies were fresh and crisp ... but the two GINORMOUS slices of bacon straddling the middle of the burger absolutely put it over the top! After taking the obligatory pics, I started to chow down. I can confirm that the burger is a "two-hander" and my suggestion is to keep your hands at the "four" and "eight" position and rotate the burger with each bite to avoid the "juicy goodness" inside from squirting out the other end - you've been warned! As if that wasn't enough, I ordered the onion rings and battered fries to get the "full experience." They were equally awesome. At the conclusion of the meal, I talked with Troy - the "wizard" behind the "curtain" behind the wonderful food. He was extremely friendly, and as he talked about his cooking experience, I immediately knew why the food was so delicious. He told me that the place is not open on Monday's, but Tuesday is "burger night," Wednesday is "fried pork chop night," and Thursday is "chicken fried steak night." He says his chicken fried steaks are hand-pounded (no pre-formed hockey pucks in this joint!). [For the record, chicken fried steak is my "gold standard," so needless to say, I will be back on a Thursday evening REAL soon.] I didn't catch what the special is Friday night, but I'm sure it is equally incredible if Troy is at the grill. Troy also recommended the BBQ on Saturdays, which is cooked on a special pit by another person at the place. Based on Troy's recommendation, I will be back to try the BBQ as well. After an extremely satisfying meal (and equally satisfying conversation with Troy), I grabbed a scoop of Bluebell mint chocolate chip ice cream on my way out (the store has a Bluebell "hand-scoop" counter with about 8 different flavors). Tried this place for the first time. I went in the evening for bbq. They were almost finished serving for the day and the ribs looked a little dry but were excellent as was the brisket and chicken.
