(I say 'worst' meaning very rude, lazy and/or they make it a point to ignore you, purposely so they won't be called on to assist. NOT ALL of them are terrible; had a few one-off positive experiences here that made a difference, as I'm referring to the overall majority as 'the worst'. The store is always being rearranged, and it already is lacking in comparison to the super Walmart stores. I'm not sure what category this WM falls into because it has groceries and items that a Super would have, but a very small selection of the product you're wanting. A lot of the items I like have recently been out of stock, although the online inventory shows available. Last night my husband and I, along with any other remaining late shoppers still looking for things, were being yelled at down the aisles by associates stocking shelves telling us we had to check out by 10:45PM or we wouldn't be able to purchase anything. Shoppers were told that they didn't have til 11:00pm like normal and they needed to hurry up or not get anything. I can understand wanting to get ready for the Black Friday crowds and them wanting to get home themselves to cook, but it was the way in which we all were being berated and being treated like cattle that was so off-putting that I had to calm my husband down and ask him to leave the store ahead of me. (He will get loud if disrespected and I just wanted to keep the peace, but not ever return. I shop here roughly once or twice a week, and probably more so now since the local HEB is undergoing a horrendous facelift, and the construction blocking many aisles. But it never fails, I always end up leaving this WM annoyed and frustrated, with a story to my husband that starts, "OMG, you wouldn't believe the WM HELL I just went through.......". (It's become expected, which sucks.) Example, I once had a $400 purchase of close to 75 items. One the VERY LAST ITEM that I went to swipe, the register screen froze, then reverted back to a start-up-looking type of screen. I had three associates over there within a 10-15 min period trying to help to get it back to normal in order to pay, but none of them had ever seen that happen nor knew what to do about it. (Bear in mind I had already been inside of the store for a little over 2.5 hours because Ethel had just rearranged the entire store AGAIN, so this was so enraging.) I was told that I needed to re-check myself out and start over on a different register and I couldn't purchase the item that prompted the freeze since it wasn't coming up in the system. ($39.99 frontline flea treatment..., seriously?! ) - this was mid-summer of this year, 2021. There are so many more examples I could give (especially about management being ignorant of policies made to assist with customer service), but it would be way too long. They were all close to the same as this experience's end result with me feeling angry and nothing to be done about it. We live in a very small town (about 25 miles South of LaGrange), and this is the closest thing we have any in-store selections so I doubt this will ever change. I know that from now on I am going the additional 15 minutes to Sealy, TX, though, and bypassing LG WM as a viable option any longer. (Same can be said for the towns tractor supply store too. They both have potential to be awesome if only they'd hire (and pay someone decently to manage it) to where they'd have access to better, more empathetic, and ready-to-assist-where-needed types of employees. Oh, and they got rid of the jewelry department last year too, which totally sucks! Now you have to check yourself out, while being harangued at the exit, getting accused of stealing something if the greeter doesn't get to see your receipt. I do WM pay, which is on my phone and doesn't offer a paper receipt. Sorry but I'm NOT hanging up my personal phone call just to exit the WM store because the greeter wants to put their germs hands on my things! No way, they can call the cops if they're so sure I stole anything after paying $200 and some dollars! That entire set up at all WMs is just absurd to me.

The woman who appeared to be the bakery manager, working around 8:15 a.m., answered every question with an attitude that felt forced, dismissive, and unwelcoming. When someone says, "This is my first time here," it's usually an opportunity to create a memorable experience--not make them feel like they're interrupting your morning. I won't be rating the bakery's famous pigs in a blanket because, to me, hospitality is part of the product. Outstanding customer service can elevate good food to a great experience. Without it, even the town's signature pastry loses some of its appeal.

My husband had the Korean pulled pork with kimchi, which was fantastic, and I had the ravioli with pesto, pine nuts, and fresh local tomatoes. I'm not the biggest fan of pasta in general, but this was so very good. I can't wait for another, before tomato season is through. Thank you, Royal Tomato! It's way more "manageable" than bigger H-E-Bs, & while they might not have the obscure organics or artisanal offerings of a Central Market or other H-E-B's, this store is a hidden gem. The shelves are always stocked, the aisles are always clear, & the associates are always happy & quick to help. I pretty much know where everything is, but the few times I've wandered aimlessly looking for something, fellow shoppers -- mostly older & wiser -- have helped me find whatever it is I'm hunting down. I've always preferred small grocery stores to large ones, & I really have a soft spot for this one. Maybe because I grew up in the area, or maybe I just like how leisurely a shopping trip here is; I enjoy my time spent here, & I think it's a nice change of pace from the Walmarts & Targets of the world. A pro-tip: the H-E-B app is a great help for a store as condensed as this one (& any H-E-B in general). It tells you aisle by aisle if they have something you want in stock, so you can save time, gas, & energy if you need something in a pinch.

They have a wonderful selection. And they are the only place I know that correctly calls "sausage kolaches" as their real name--Klobásník--or Klobásníky (plural.) but don't expect those to still be there. On a weekday, they might still have these Czech treats until 3 pm, but on the weekends, they go fast! Always friendly staff and i just love looking through their home decor. They have the cutest little tchotchkes that are locally crafted and so wonderful for home, garden, or lawn. I have bought many a christmas and birthday gift on the way. Great metal art as well! The bathrooms are always clean and smell fine. I highly recommend stopping at least one time to see everything they have to offer. It's a true, "small Texas town" stop! Oh, and set the GPS! Down a narrow aisle towards the back you see a line of folks ordering to-go food, but there is no recognizable way to determine how to order out of the meatcase. I finally got a clerk to notice that I wanted something out of the case, ... he gathered my selected items and said, "meet me at the register." I purchased the beef links, hot chubbys, and the homemade weiners. That night, I had it all on the smoker. Everything was delicious. I found the weiners very dense and meaty, but heavy on salt content. I tried marinating them, to tone the salt down a bit, but to no avail. I'll be boiling the next batch to see if that helps. Overall, City Market is a place to visit if you're flying down I10 past Schulenburg, Texas. I'll be back.
