Two stars for the ability to park AND get a cart in under an hour. Bastrop HEB really has set the bar low on those requirements. I guess we're back to driving 3 hours round trip for grocery shopping in Georgetown... where they have competition, multiple stores, and I've never been told, "Sorry. We're cleaning the machine. After being open for FOUR hours? Either you need to have two machines in rotation or... do this before/after the deli opens. Shocker to get prepared for the day BEFORE the day starts.

I went to the one in La Grange, as it was pretty much the only true grocery store in the area (yeah, there is that other one attached to a big box store down the road, but it just isn't the same). Normally grocery stores have a certain layout, and while this store held somewhat true to that typical layout, the one thing it did not have was the standard dimensions. In this store the aisles are relatively short, but there are a bunch of them, which means that finding the right aisle for an item can be a bit tougher because of the way things are distributed through the store. You still have your various sections, like your meat department and your produce, though the deli was in a very odd spot at the front of the store with the access to it pointed away from the entrance to the store. I had to walk the whole way around the store before I was able to find the deli! The store is clean and decently lit, so finding what you need isn't a problem. Variety seemed to be there to some extent, though the deli didn't have any fried chicken which seemed odd to me... baked whole chickens, sure, but no deep fried chicken. Anyway, if you are looking for a grocery store in La Grange, I would say HEB is the place to go, and bypass that big box store down the road.

They are known for their kolaches and pastries. They also have an assortment of goods including clothing, beverages, deli and a whole host of snacks. I purchased two pigs-n-a-blanket and pecan cinnamon roll. So delicious... Saturday was quite busy at the bakery. It formed a pretty pleasant environment.

They have a nice store, it's a little more than a convenient store and bakery. There's all types of homemade pastries of breads along with a deli. I enjoy stopping here. Once you're able to pick out what you want the trick is getting it to a destination without you eating all of it. I have to put it in the back on the floorboard so it's out of my reach.

My husband had the Korean pulled pork with kimchi, which was fantastic, and I had the ravioli with pesto, pine nuts, and fresh local tomatoes. I'm not the biggest fan of pasta in general, but this was so very good. I can't wait for another, before tomato season is through. Thank you, Royal Tomato! It's way more "manageable" than bigger H-E-Bs, & while they might not have the obscure organics or artisanal offerings of a Central Market or other H-E-B's, this store is a hidden gem. I pretty much know where everything is, but the few times I've wandered aimlessly looking for something, fellow shoppers -- mostly older & wiser -- have helped me find whatever it is I'm hunting down. I've always preferred small grocery stores to large ones, & I really have a soft spot for this one. Maybe because I grew up in the area, or maybe I just like how leisurely a shopping trip here is; I enjoy my time spent here, & I think it's a nice change of pace from the Walmarts & Targets of the world. A pro-tip: the H-E-B app is a great help for a store as condensed as this one (& any H-E-B in general). It tells you aisle by aisle if they have something you want in stock, so you can save time, gas, & energy if you need something in a pinch.

And they are the only place I know that correctly calls "sausage kolaches" as their real name--Klobásník--or Klobásníky (plural.) but don't expect those to still be there. On a weekday, they might still have these Czech treats until 3 pm, but on the weekends, they go fast! Always friendly staff and i just love looking through their home decor. They have the cutest little tchotchkes that are locally crafted and so wonderful for home, garden, or lawn. I have bought many a christmas and birthday gift on the way. Great metal art as well! The bathrooms are always clean and smell fine. I highly recommend stopping at least one time to see everything they have to offer. It's a true, "small Texas town" stop! Oh, and set the GPS! Down a narrow aisle towards the back you see a line of folks ordering to-go food, but there is no recognizable way to determine how to order out of the meatcase. I finally got a clerk to notice that I wanted something out of the case, ... he gathered my selected items and said, "meet me at the register." I purchased the beef links, hot chubbys, and the homemade weiners. That night, I had it all on the smoker. Everything was delicious. I found the weiners very dense and meaty, but heavy on salt content. I tried marinating them, to tone the salt down a bit, but to no avail. I'll be boiling the next batch to see if that helps. Overall, City Market is a place to visit if you're flying down I10 past Schulenburg, Texas. I'll be back.
