Always heard of Luling BBQ, so decided to stop in on way back to Houston from San Antonio. I think I was looking for a different BBQ joint but ended up here. Ordered a sliced beef sandwich, Mac n cheese, chocolate pie and Cheerwine. The BBq was pretty good, I'm not a fan of the mustard based sauce but the meat was tender, moist and nicely smoked. The Mac n cheese was lacking of cheese flavor and seasoning. Chocolate meringue pie Is one of my favorite desserts that my grandmother used to make. This pie was close but not the same, but delicious in its own right. I've always heard of cheerwine but never tried it and now I know I like it. They didn't make the drink but had The forethought to sell it so they get the credit. This place is worth a stop, for true. read more

Best link sausage EVER! I always stop at Luling City Market off I-10 when I am travelling from Houston to San Antonio. Stopped by for lunch at 11:15 on 8/23/19. Since I was early, before the Friday lunch crowd, I was able to walk right into the smoker room and purchase my BBQ. I ordered 1 link and 1/4 pound sliced brisket. Picked up my utensils at the front counter and headed to the dining room. The links are the BEST. Been eating them for years as my aunt would by them for family reunions year after year. The brisket was smoked to perfection. Just enough bark and salt on the outside. So moist and tender on the inside. The delicate pink smoke flavor under the bark was clearly visible. Woofed down my lunch and back on the road to San Antonio. I wish they were open on Sunday so I could stop back by on my way home. Great food. Best sausage EVER. read more

Barbecue was alright,not as impressive as it was talked up to be and the barbecue pit crew was kind of surly. The cashier boy in the pit area was downright rude and unapologetic about his flippant behavior.He seemed to get off on being a diva about only taking cash for the till. Not cool,pretty petty and not a good first impression at all for my visit.I am far from overly sensitive just so we are clear. This was not a jovial or even respectful interaction. To be clear about the barbecue and why it was just okay. The fatty bit was kind of undercooked and the meat itself on the chewy side & very dry.Needed lots of sauce to make up for the lack of juicy flavor that was expected. We went here on a rainy day when Luling City Market was mobbed with a 45 minute wait. Actually, there was a pretty long wait here too. I was surprised to find the barbecue was acceptably good. The pork ribs were the best of what they had with the sausage a runner up. The sauce was pretty close to identical to Luling City Market. So if the wait at this place is less than half of the other, I would say give this place a try. Service here leans toward Styrofoam, but you can ask for the butcher paper if you want the authentic experience. read more

Back during the summer of 2009, I decided I would make it my goal to visit all Texas Monthly 2008 Top 50 BBQ places in one years time. I figure it is only fair to write reviews for them. Who would have guessed that just a few stores down form the famous City Market is another BBQ joint that is also a must try. This little red barn is a different style. It is more of the small town cafeteria style and family place. Like a country store whose only wares are food. You can get plates, specials, steaks, burgers, fish. They even offer you something not seen much in these parts... plastic-ware??? Don't worry, you can order by the pound too for the BBQ purest. This was the second stop of a three stop trip I was making for the day. While the special pork chops look tasty, I stick with just brisket and both types of sausage. I of course demand that sauce be on the side, and assume I won't even use it. Confidently however I will give this place two awards: 1) Spiciest sausage. This jalapeno cheese sausage had the best kick out of the countless others I have tried. The heat went great with the strong flavor. I would even say top 5 sausage overall. 2) Best sauce. It is true, this is the best I have tried. It is actually really similar to City Markets sauce but not as thin and runny. This was just thick enough to stick, but still ran easily on to my bread. A beautiful orange color. Had the perfect smokey taste and just the right kick and sweetness. I'm not a big sauce fan, but I think this could almost convert me. Seriously I could drink this straight. The regular sausage was also very good. You can tell it is homemade and had the delicious german spices. Brisket did have a slight problem... it wasn't brisket. It was shoulder clod. I could tell right away before she even cut it for me. to round and to much texture. Plus what fat there was isn't even webbed throughout or around the edges. This also lead to it being a bit dry in the middle, and the bark too cooked on the outside. The bark itself still had a great rub to it typical of german/te The smoke ring was a bright pink and packed with flavor, still just a bit to chewy. I recommend this place. It stands it own next to its more well known neighbor with no problems. My suggestion is to try alittle of both. They are different enough you can easily make comparison. Plus I think you will be pleased with the sausage. Another nice thing about this place is it is more costumer friendly. Don't get me wrong, I love ordering by the pound (which I did here anyway). But it is nice to be able to get plates, specials, and have choices of side dishes. read more

Been living in luling for 8 years now 1st time ever here tried the pork rib plate with Mac and cheese and beans. And had a hard time trying to enjoy the ribs with every bite came with these small HARD CARTILAGE pieces so each bite I was digging in my mouth...and really no flavor to the ribs either the only thing that was alright was the Mac and cheese and the beans were a no go. read more

Not the best BBQ I've had, especially when there is MUCH better closer to you. In fact, the better BBQ is across the busy 183, which you must dodge traffic to get to. However, the brisket was fairly good, but I wasn't impressed with the taste of it: the brisket was just "okay". Nothing to write home about. Not so dry, but not so tasty. The sauce was a vinegar base, but wasn't up to par. 2 stars on the sauce. Overall, just okay. Go to City Market across the street for better BBQ and sauce. Just be careful crossing the street! However, the food was less than mediocre. Among other food items, I ordered a slab of ribs and discovered after my arrival in Houston NO RIBS!!!! Since we were in town already, we decided to try the "other Luling BBQ place" since it was literally a half a block away. We only tried the sausage and brisket here; the former was very salty, and while it had decent texture and moisture, the salt really hurt the product. Brisket was OK, although I wonder if it was smoked with hickory rather than the more common post oak, as it seemed to have a different flavor than other joints. I have heard about this place for years, and finally made the 5 minute drive off I-10 to get there, worth the trip. The sausage was moist and flavorful. Brisket not too fatty with loads of flavor and fall apart tender and the ribs were fall off the bone tender, and delicious. Sides were excellent with just as much flavor as the BBQ. The staff were friendly and efferent, you could tell they enjoyed the product. If you are having a craving for some real Texas BBQ, make the trek to Luling and enjoy. read more

You don't come to Luling's BBQ for amazing service or ambiance, you come here for mouth watering BBQ. We ordered a pork rib and sausage during our most recent visit. You walk into a small dark smokey room to order just the meat. They give it to you on butcher paper and you dig in. Don't forget to ask the ladies at the front for some BBQ sauce! The rib was juicy, not too fatty, and peeled away easily from the bone. It was the softest, most tender meat I've ever had on a BBQ'ed pork rib! Paired with that sauce... it was heavenly! Their sausage was amazingly crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. I don't know what voodoo magic goes on in this place, but they make amazing barbecue. The hubby took us here since he enjoyed the brisket so much when they stopped by this small town during business trip. So we decide to have lunch here on our way to San Antonio. This place is right across the street to the famous City Market, and quite easy to find. There wasn't a lot of cars parked outside, but a lot of people, and almost packed up - it must be good. You can smell the deliciousness the moment you step in, and waiting in line just makes me more hungry. They offer sandwiches, plates (0.5 lb of meat w/ 2 sides of your choice), bbq meat order by weight, etc. There are also cake/pie slices ("if you stick a finger in it, you must buy it"), tea and bottled drinks. We had a rib plate and 1 lb beef brisket for two. The sweet tea dispenser looked kinda strange to me lol. We really enjoyed the meat, brisket was tender and moist and juicy, rib was cooked perfect. Despite the famous City Market across the street, this the best barbecue in Luling. We were so disappointed in the dry, gray brisket at City Market that we figured we may as well check the other game in town. As soon as I saw the meat I knew it would be totally different. Unlike City Market's it was moist, had texture to it and a sepia tinge to go with the pink smoke ring. It also tasted wonderful with a sauce that was probably copied from City Market's but was thicker with more tang. The apple pie made locally was a good deal too. I guess since all the out-of-towners automatically go to City Market, Luling BBQ has to offer a better product to attract customers and it does. Hands down the best barbecue in Luling. read more

Their menu items looked delicious and l, since the rainstorm had just passed, we wanted to sit outside at the little picnic tables. We walked in the door at 5:02 pm on a Sunday, and the lit-up sign outside said they closed at six. A young man sweeping out from under booths said "closed". Not hello, not I'm sorry but.... Just barked "closed". I said, oh I didn't realize, is something going on... before I could finish and ask if something was going on in town to close early, a patron began to yell at me. "It's small town America, it's how things are done. If you want something that's open all the time, go to Subway or Dairy Queen or something." The old man was still reading me riot act as we walked out the door, along with several other customers who had come in behind us. We will NOT be back. What this "gentleman" (and I use the term loosely) didn't realize is that my parents were on the phone the entire time. They are a few months away from retirement and are looking for a "small town America" to which they can relocate and settle down. Well let's take a look here, we had heard so much about this place from words of "its amazing" "the best bbq in Texas" "mouth watering bbq" and so oomph and so on...you get the point. So on our way home from Houston we had decided to give this place a shot and say what the heck, why not, let's try it out. Anyways upon arriving to the place it seemed like a good ol country cooking bbq joint which made me seem like it was going to be top tier. I tend to go off of what my Taste buds say rather then what a couple yelp reviews say. Furthermore we went in and it was friendlyands inviting with the typical bbq smell which was good af, and we ordered sausage ribs and brisket. Upon eating it after we had left the brisket was average at best, too many fatty pieces that were not smoked all the way which we had to leave a handful to the side cause we couldn't eat it. Also the sausage was not bad I it was ok typical smoked sausage nothing much out of it. Lastly the ribs weren't bad either they were alright, nothing fancy like completely fall off the bone tbh. The only negative review I can confirm is the heat lights. But on the day I went (a Sunday) the meats were coming and going so fast, nothing had time to dry out. The older lady cutting the meat was quick and friendly. I don't expect to make a BFF out of someone while they're at work, but she made my party feel like we were welcomed and made our food to order. They have the normal BBQ selections, but I did try pea salad for the first time. It's basically peas with mayo and cheese bits. It taste exactly like it sounds. Not bad, not great. The turkey was fair, but the star for me were the brisket, sausage and ribs. That's the order I'd order them again. The feeling like you're eating in your grandma's kitchen is fun. Nice little joint on the square. The Brisket is really good. Not shy about serving up the point side, which I prefer over the flat. Normal sides on request. They also serve sausage rings that I have to admit I was not a fan of. But my partner in crime thought that were okay. I did not have the ribs, but they did look fantastic. Their sauce is really good as well. They even have their own seasoning for sale. I bought a bottle because as I said, thought the brisket was really good. stopped in for a quick lunch.... after paying for our meals... over $50 for 4, we searched for a table to sit however all the open tables were left dirty from the previous guests. We asked the cashier (not wearing a mask) if they could come wipe down the table. We were told by the cashier " EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK". Flies and No A/C! Feel like sweating your ass off while eating dry fat brisket? If you are, hope you can eat with one hand because the other hand will be at war with the flies of Lulin'. If you didn't know flies are granted a speed boost, physical dodge, and physical defense in non air conditioned areas, but no worries I can help you with this. First you want to squirt some of that brown smelly ass sauce on the table, now this is your lure since flies can't resist the smell of shit. Once they landed they're pretty much fucked themselves since they are knee deep in BBQ sauce, grab the nearly empty paper towel tube located at the end of the table and swiftly land heavy attacks! Now it may take a few whacks since they are physically boosted in this environment. I suggest using your pocket knife if equipped, purses and hats work well too. Putting BBQ sauce next to you may calm your foe, he may just want to sit and eat with the family if you don't mind. For additional flies, rinse repeat. This was a nice, old fashioned barbecue place. I don't anything about the history, but I know the people were really friendly and the food was decent. I really liked the brisket, which was the star. Ribs were ok. I didn't really like the mac and cheese but that isn't the reason I went. I had a slice of pie and a coke from some place up north; it was made with real sugar and liked it a lot. It's a charming place. Go for the smiles and the brisket. Skip the mac and cheese, get pie instead. read more

Popped in on my road trip down south on the strength of Reddit suggestions in the Texas subreddit. I apparently went to the wrong one because everyone was raving about City market. I liked luling BBQ. I ordered the brisket sandwich. Very tasty cuts of brisket I liked the sauce it came with and the price was great. I beat the lunch crowd because as I sat down everyone piled in. I guess it's a good local eatery because it got packed fast. The sandwich filled me up pronto and they had a great selection of homemade desserts on display. I ate here once before and I have to say all the BBQ is fatty, gristly, and just down right nasty. Why have they been here for scores of years? Well on most days City Market next door has about 300 people in line, mostly on the weekends, and the people need an alternative. They have about 7 sides here vs. just potato salad and beans at CM. They also have chicken, chopped beef sandwiches, catfish and okra (before 2:30). So I went here today and bought mac n cheese and cole slaw and brought it next door to City Market. To each his/her own. So when visiting Luling, you have two places to get your BBQ grub on. My stomach will always be at the other one, but I may try this one's fried catfish one day. read more

After an awesome trip in San Antonio, I'd thought it would be great to end it with some delicious, smoky bbq. City Market didn't look open (that's my fault for not actually going to the door but based it by the cars in the front) and Luling's BBQ had plenty of cars. Half of the tables inside the restaurant were occupied, good sign. Since there were 4 of us I figured a pound of each meat: sausage, ribs and brisket with a side of coleslaw would suffice. The service could be better - the man cutting the meat and taking the meat out of the oven seemed annoyed that we were eating there....where else were we to eat? We don't live in Luling. Brushing off his little snide attitude since the food goes down a food line, sides were offered (didn't look so delish) but my friend wanted some coleslaw along with some onions and pickles behind the counter. The brisket did not have a good smoke ring, it was tender not the moist tenderness and broke into pieces and not very flavorful. The sausage was a bit better, dry and also a bit crumbly. The winner was the ribs, literally falling of the bones and had the most flavor. Of course, all of the meats needed the bbq to help flavor it. The coleslaw was vinegar based and like the rest of the meal not very memorable.
