The food here is a 10 out of 10 it's fresh and delicious! The Spaetzle is my favorite! It's the right amount of salty and it's chewy. The bratwurst was an amazing flavor and a nice crisp bite! The Jägerschnitzel is fried perfectly crispy and the mushroom with the sauce is incredible! The red cabbage is also sweet but not too sweet with a little vinegar taste. The Bavarian Potato Salad in the gasthuas platter for two is vinegary. The service here is great as they came and checked on us a lot and made sure to fill up our drinks! I knew the food would not be on par with meals in Germany, so I adjusted my expectations accordingly. That being said, it could have been better. The server was friendly and accommodating; the interior is a bit stark, but the wall decorations are charming. The beer on tap was delicious and well-chilled and well-poured. Sadly, that was the best part of the meal. The pretzel was warm, but the exterior was soft and squishy. A bit of crunch would be better. The platter was very disappointing. The schnitzels were thin (which is okay) but very dry. Same for the smoked pork chop (kassler/rippchen). The sausage was nicely grilled but the interior had an odd texture. Potato salad was somewhat bland, but zipped up nicely with the horseradish sauce served in the side. The sauerkraut had no flavor or the expected tang. My wife and I have come to Leavenworth every December for the six years we have been together. Even before we were married, we spent our first Christmas together in this charming town, and the very first place we ever dined in town was (King) Ludwig's. Drawn in by the savory chickens spinning on their Ferris wheel-esque rotisserie in the window out front, we knew back then that we were in for good things. And we were! So it was surprising, even to us, that in the six years since that first visit, we realized that we had never returned to Ludwig's...and neither of us could really say why. Perhaps it was the overwhelming number of other dining options in town, and our adventurous desire to see (and taste) them all. Even so, that was doing Ludwig's a disservice. It was one of our first, and most charming memories of Leavenworth, and one worth revisiting. It wasn't until we were looking for some spaetzle for lunch (moderately difficult to find in a German-town, although that is mostly due to the oppressive, overwhelming crowds of people clogging up all the restaurants). We inquired first at Andreas Keller, but their wait list was absurd. Baren Haus told us that they no longer served it; however, they recommended Ludwig's, just down the way. Immediately, both of us realized how long we had been neglecting this place, and happily made out way back to our "first date" spot in Leavenworth. Despite a relatively large and cumbersome party (2 adults, 2 kids, and a toddler in a stroller), we were seated immediately, despite it being a (late) lunch hour. My wife locked in on the chicken schnitzel plate, slathered in mushroom gravy, and accompanied by a healthy side of the aforementioned desired spaetzle, as well as the required braised red cabbage. Let me tell you, friends: I am not a fan of mushrooms. But that gravy, paired with the beautifully breaded breast of chicken schnitzel and savory spaetzle, is just heavenly. It was the perfect pairing of everything we love about German cuisine, and the necessary reminder of what we had been UN-necessarily depriving ourselves for the last six years...a mistake we will not be making again, on future visits! Ludwig's is also one of the few restaurants in town that can handle a large crowd (the indoor beer garden at the back can accommodate 100+ people by itself) and, even rarer, one of the few restaurants to take reservations online, which is a HUGE plus, especially during the holiday surge. Andreas Keller doesn't (wait list only, sometimes 3+ hours). Munchen Haus doesn't either (obviously), and the line is often dozens long. Baren Haus is also waitlist only, and despite turning tables relatively quick, and also being delicious (the kohl rouladen is to die for!), it is lacking certain staples (such as spaetzle!), which is a bit of a tragedy. Despite its prominent position on Front Street, Ludwig's somehow manages to blend into the background, and can easily be overlooked...making it the unsung underdog of the Leavenworth dining scene...but it shouldn't be. So if you're in the mood for some genuine German grub, look for the rotisserie chickens rotating in the glowing window...like the Bat Signal for Bavarian banqueting! You won't regret it! read more

The food and service was good, but the ambiance was waaaaay off. On a Friday night at Ludwig's in Leavenworth, we did NOT expect the piped in and truly horrible Muzak. Breathy, pseudo-jazz elevatorized covers of Cold Play, Fleetwood Mac and worse.. "Kiss Me"? "I Shot the Sheriff"? It was bizarre - what was the manager thinking?! Not a great backdrop to a kitschy Bavarian-themed restaurant with decent food. Normally would barely have noticed such a thing, but it was really odd and difficult to ignore. In the past the food has always exc our expectations. however with the change in ownership the quality of food has declined to embarrassing low levels. for example the breading on the schnitzel is thicker than the meat, the German potato salad is served deli style with no flavoring whatsoever the sauerkraut most likely comes from a does the red cabbage. used to have a reputation for serving close to authentic Austrian and Bavarian cuisine unfortunately not anymore. Not the best place in Leavenworth to get German food. I just don't like how it is extremely overpriced. There are much better places for a lot cheaper in town. The service was gruff, but the food came out fast. The chicken apple sausage was just ok. It was a little chewy and didn't have much flavor. The fries that it came with were delicious though. Wow! I had the Jagerschnitzel and hubby had the sauerbraten (braised beef in gravy) both with red cabbage and spaetzel. It was AMAZING! Our son had the chicken nuggets and fries and at 7 he NEVER finishes all his food but he ate the entire basket. We ordered a flight of beer and then a pitcher. Great variety of brews. Service was superb and food came fast even though they were slammed on Memorial Day weekend. They welcomed our pooch at their patio seating outside and brought her water. Aloha, when in Leavenworth, there are 2 German-themed restaurants that stand out per the locals at our hotel. Ludwig's being the most authentic and broad menu. We enjoyed our lunch here especially since it was air-conditioned in the dining room. When the weather is nice out, there's also out-door dinning right on the closed main street in Leavenworth. We sat in the back area, aka Biergarten (beer garden). Restroom towards front of restaurant and also located on the biergarten area. Seating was on wooden benches. Picnic style decor. Variety of beer, hard liquor, and warm drinks. Some extras: 1. The area has some uneven flooring. 2. Live polka music, warmth, private tables, and truly average but mostly edible food. It worked for us on November 24th, the day after Thanksgiving, with crazy crowds in Leavenworth. The line here was short and we were able to get seated quickly with our senior parents who needed warmth and chairs in short order. Sometimes convenience outranks food. Polka Pals were fun and entertaining, but we couldn't hear the singing (mics not quite working right?) Happy low key polka music, not wildly intense get up and polka madly around the Biergarten, a perfect accompaniment to dinner. Waitress was nice, orders were right, service was prompt-ish, hostess allowed cold parents to stand inside the door and warm up for which we were very grateful. The pretzel was piping hot, but turned rubbery really fast. Ditto the bread buns (microwaved, perhaps, or maybe just a little on the stale side) which, once cool and chewy, took a lot of joy out of the wurst experience. Unhappy that the mustard on the table was French's. (NEIN!) Currywurst was wurst with curry powder dumped on it. Chicken schnitzel was crispy and juicy, dill cucumber salad, limply reasonable. Made reservations for dinner. Sat in the street out door tables. So you get to people watch, enjoy the sun and fresh summer air. All the staff seemed overwhelmed. It was a very busy weekend and they were understaffed. But despite seemingly being overwhelmed and busy they were still friendly and tag teamed to be sure they were serving all the guests. Timing was slow waiting for them to check on ya or get refills or even to pay the check. I attribute that to the staff shortage(no shows). But they were friendly and that's a big diff from busy and crabby. We ordered schnitzel, spatzel and roasted chicken (dang forgot to take pics). The chicken was actually so much better than I expected. Tender, flavorful and cooked perfectly. The schnitzel and potatoes didn't come with gravy (what?!?) so an extra 4$ charge for that. Overall food was good. Service was good. Experience was good. Not great but good. If you want a good Bavarian meal next time you're in Leavenworth, check them out. read more

Honestly so good. I was surprised by the vegetarian brat options. The only downfall was the wait for service. I'm not even mad about it though because it was super busy as Leavenworth usually is. Our server was great but you can tell he had a lot on his plate. We got the potato cakes which were similar to a cross between a latke and hash brown, awesome with the apple sauce. The apple strudel was good just a bit doughier than we're used to. I got the vegan brat, hubby got the kielbasa brat and everything was amazing. My grandson had a cheese burger My daughter ordered chicken schnitzel and I had Munich Chicken. The red potatoes and red cabbage served as sides were cooked inn bulk, nothing fancy. Her schnitzel was good with the sauce. I chicken was over baked and tasteless. We had ice tea and a soda. We had to ask for a refill. Highlight of the meal was my apple strudel. Very good. On Monday, I waited at the "Wait here to be seated" stand outside for 8min and no one appeared, even though inside was fairly empty. Tonight, I walked in, and was seated quickly, as there was only one other table occupied. Inside was warm, and the table comfortable. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel, which came with red cabbage and spaetzel. The schnitzel was fairly easy to cut and well-breaded and the gravy dark & delicious. Leavenworth has some great German food places and Ludwig's is as good as any of them. It is a deceptively large place, with a large area in the back. The seating is not very comfortable, but it is very functional and really efficient for large groups (which they seem to get a lot of). Service was very good and shockingly fast. We started with beers. They have an outstanding selection of drafts, I had a Kolsch. For appetizers, we had pretzels and sausages. The pretzel is large--it can easily feed a few people and the cheese is to die for, delicious. We then had bratwurst and the hot sausage (they can also be main dishes, but we ordered them as a group and then cut them out). Both of these were really great also, I particularly loved the brat. The hot sausage did have a bit of a kick, but not overwhelming. As good as everything was so far, the Jägerschnitzel plate was even better. The pork schnitzel was absolutely perfect, pounded out just right with the best sauce, just incredible. Then the spatzle was excellent also, just like what you get in Germany and such a perfect complement to the schnitzel. Then the red cabbage was really great also. Everyone loved that. The Veal Weiner Schnitzel was ok, but my son declared my Reuben the winner of the meal... so if the Reuben was the winner at just 'OK' then that tells you how the rest was. We had a truly disappointing experience at Ludwig's. We ordered the cabbage rolls, which arrived cold in the center. We sent them back, and while they came back steaming hot on the outside, the inside was still cold. Clearly, they were just reheated on the surface, not properly cooked through. We returned the dish again and asked for our check, making it clear we didn't want to pay for the cabbage rolls since we never got an edible version. Our server, Bryson, didn't offer so much as an apology--he seemed annoyed more than anything. The lack of basic courtesy and care from the staff only added to an already frustrating situation. Definitely not coming back. If this is how they handle food safety and customer service, I'd recommend dining elsewhere. read more

It's so great to be back on the PNW and to Oktoberfest in Leavenworth, WA. For about 15 yrs my husband and I, with a group of friends, would visit Leavenworth for Oktoberfest. Lugwig's was always a must for me! My favorite place to eat. The food has never, and still doesn't disappoint. My party of 6 (2 adults and 4 teens) came here for dinner on a Friday night. We waited only a few minutes to get a table and were greeted by our server soon after being seated. Trying to find a restaurant that everyone can agree on is difficult with such a large party, so unfortunately after ordering an uber pretzel (10/10!), we decided to leave and find a different spot for dinner. Our server was understanding and was quick to ring us up. The service experience left us with no complaints. The pretzel was huge (it was shared amongst 5 in our party), and delicious! It was puffy and light, and topped with the perfect amount of salt. The accompanying cheese dip paired perfectly with the pretzel.. definitely plan to stop here when we visit again just for the pretzel alone! The only downsides have to do with the interior, the lighting was poor (yes, I know it's like this in most places at Leavenworth but the interior seemed dimmer than other places) and there was minimal air flow so summertime means stagnant and hot air inside. All in all, I'd come here again if we were to visit in the winter. read more

The portions here are huge! I couldn't finish my whole meal, but what I did eat was delicious. The potato pancakes very much tasted homemade, as did the applesauce, which was more of a jam. I loved the spaetzle that came with my entree, and the cucumber salad. The beef in the goulash was not that tender, but still good. The interior of the restaurant is very charming. Every time we visit Leavenworth we like to eat here. We had a Lovely late lunch outside in perfect weather. We shared the onion rings which were the best onion rings we ever had. Hot, crunchy & a nice onion size. We also shared the Jagerschnitzel, which is a pounded pork chop, breaded and served with a delicious mushroom gravy. It came with spaetzel & beets. So Good!
