Awesome diner. I had a great BBQ beef sandwich and they have delicious fried chicken (a bit oily though, but it fried chicken!) It is a miscarriage of justice that The Bone only has 4 stars on Yelp. What is WRONG with people?! I had a jumbo burger there last week. It had been 32 years since I'd eaten one of their amazingly delicious, perfect hamburgers, and it hadn't changed a BIT!. It tasted exactly the same ... best burger on the planet! Lucky Wishbone has been a part of my life for well over 40 years. I like the food and wish all the best to the new owners but the card fee is in my opinion an awful addition to this business. I paid over $100 for food only to be charged an additional fee for using my card. People just do not carry a lot of cash around with them especially now with almost everyone talking about coin shortages. I'm also not a big fan of the remodel. We sat in the back section and I felt like I was in a cave. I'm hoping all the dark barriers will come down once the COVID threat has decreased. Why not choose to use clear barriers like so many other businesses. It no longer looks like a comfy warm place. I have wonderful memories of this place, the new changes just worry me. read more

I recently took a friend out to lunch and she suggested we eat at Lucky Wishbone, it was my first time dining there and I was excited to try the food. When we came inside, I couldn't help but notice that the restaurant had the smell and decor of a very dated cafeteria. I immediately felt like leaving but my friend said the food would be better than the atmosphere. It wasn't. We ordered chicken sandwiches, which were bland, room temperature, and just nasty. Neither of us were able to stomach the food. After we left, my friend apologized to me and said she was both embarrassed and ashamed that she had suggested we eat there. I know that Lucky Wishbone has been around Anchorage for decades, but I feel that the food and decor need to be updated. I do not think I would return and I don't recommend it. read more

I ordered for pickup and when I got a call that my food was ready I had to wait in line for 20 minutes to pay and receive my food, it was very cold and my shake was completely melted. I also have a issue with the "no cash" rule that they have, you can only pay with a card here. I have given this place a few chances recently but it's not the same as it was before. This restaurant used to be a favorite in my family but it has noticeably gone down hill. I hope they turn things around and start accepting cash so I can return. read more

Used to have the best chicken and milkshakes to be found anywhere! Changed ownership and the chicken is different and the milkshakes are awful! After a couple of minutes, the milkshake separates and is disgusting. The taste we loved for 50 years is gone. The quality of everything has been lessened and the prices are raised beyond ridiculous. Ex: $6.80 for a kids burger and they no longer include fries and a drink. Impressed! We have driven by this place many times on the way into Anchorage, but never stopped until a friend mentioned it. Glad we did and wish we had sooner. I deviated from the fried chicken and instead tried the pastrami. Very good sandwich, just missing a little of the pastrami flavor (kind of overpowered by the rye and swiss), but still tasty. Wife went with the gizzards and they were the best she'd ever had. Super tender, crispy fried batter, not overly seasoned, but also not too plain. Lived in anchorage for 9 years and finally went yesterday I've always heard it had such good food. But we were so disappointed noting was fresh. Everything was cold, the burgers looked like microwaved Patties onion rings were old and cold. Chili cheese fries were cold and the fried chicken that they are famous for had no flavor it was the only item that was juicy and hot, but no flavor at all. I've had better fried chicken from carrs. The best thing my family had was the milkshakes. I would give this place zero stars if I could. Save your money and go to McDonald's. They used to have the best chicken ever, however, after the owner passed away, the chicken has gone downhill. The last three orders I have purchased were terrible. The outside was dark, dark brown and the inside was fried to a crisp down to the bone. Even my wife, who doesn't eat much chicken on the bone, said I wouldn't be happy with it before I even looked at it. I have given them three chances, but I won't anymore. I grew up in Anchorage and moved away in 2003. There was some restaurants that I remembered fondly and this was one of them. I have since moved back and have been able to visit the establishments I remembered so much. As of right now, I can honestly say that if and when I move, I believe Lucky Wishbone will be the only restaurant worth missing now days. I grew up on this place. Grandfather, God reset his soul, always took me here and now that I'm grown I can clearly see why. They honor their vets, serve a great product and continue to display christian values and partake in helping their community. I have had a handful of friends growing up who got their first job here and now that I'm watching our extended family and next generation get their first jobs here too, I realize how proud I am that they still invest in these kids. 1st job kids are not always the hardest workers, but your first job is very important and full of life lessons kids really do need to learn. Thanks LWB! Moving on, I LOVE their burgers, they are fresh made and not frozen patties, salads and fries. I used to get their floats and shakes as a kid too and I'm sure they're still great, but I have grown out of my sweet tooth. I also want to commend them on still serving home made ranch. Is that too much to ask for now days? I mean really, the rest of the business should take note, AVOID COSTCO when making dressings for your business please! One last little story for you. It's like an old dinner type joint . It's been there many years and you can tell by the decor. The place is always busy. I ordered the fried gizzards which they boil till tender then batter and fry. They were tasty however I've never had them so tender it was almost weird. Everything was on point as far as the food and service. I plan to return. read more

An Anchorage favorite since the '50s, and a Cara favorite since the '80s, Lucky Wishbone is the place to go for fried chicken, burgers and an old fashioned fountain drink! Old black & white WWII era photos of pilots line the walls, green booths and large windows with vistas of the Chugach Range decorated the space. You can't go wrong with ordering the "Mom" or "Junior" chicken baskets (I like to order it all-white, because you get the wishbone!). They come with fries and a cornbread muffin on the side. The burgers are your basic 1/4 or 1/3 pound patties, topped with lettuce, pickles, onions, tomato, mustard and mayo, but come with other more creative topping combos as well. There are other classic diner offerings as well, such as soups, salads, BLTs, fried fish sandwiches, onion rings, etc., as well as a full fountain offering sodas, floats, malts and shakes. The service is friendly and largely staffed by family of the owners (you can look at photos of them over the years, on the bulletin board by the entryway). If you go with a large group during their busy times, be prepared to wait a bit. If you are eating by yourself or with just one other person, I've found the counter to be a great option too. They also do carry-out and have a drive-through, but I recommend calling a few minutes ahead if you're going that route, as the chicken is pan fried when you order it. read more

I specifically wanted to try the cole slaw. I'm having a fish fry and I was following up on a recommendation from a coworker. It was nice and light with some pineapple thrown in for sweetness. The chicken was excellent, but I'm a salt-aholic and I had to add some. The coating wasn't overwhelming and the portion size was Goldilocks "just right". If I had to make a recommendation to the chef, I would probably say that the chicken could benefit with a four hour brine or so. Still...good eats! read more

What's the big deal...? I got a pan fried chicken combo, which includes fries and a small roll. The fries were bland and too soft, and the roll was mediocre, almost like from a grade school cafeteria. The chicken was ok, too many bones and not enough meat. And their tuna sandwich is absolutely horrible and definitely not restaurant quality! The other reviews do not do this gem justice. The decor is a step back in time to the 60's but clean and bright. I would not change a thing decor-wise. The food is excellent. I was Yelping to find fried chicken for my daughter and stumbled onto Lucky Wishbone. We enjoyed fried chicken and milkshakes (malts). My wife had a half garden salad. The salad was impressive. Fresh lettuce, peppers,cucumbers,boiled egg, cheese, tomatoes with a generous portion of dressing on the side. The food was exactly what we were looking for. It's been here since the 50's, and has a nice broken in feeling. Like that old lazy boy you hang on to that doesn't look as good as it used to, but fits you like a glove and feels great. The burgers are simple, great tasting and always a mouth pleaser. Other reviewers have stated that their fries were soggy; In the 30+ years that I have been coming here, I have yet to get fries that were anything but fresh so I'm not sure what happened. Be warned, a large order of fries feeds at least 2 people. The fresh (frozen) strawberry shakes have been a family favorite since before I was born, and I have yet to try any malt or shake there that wasn't fantastic. The strawberry shortcake , like the burgers, is simple and fantastic. I believe that they bake their own shortcake, but don't quote me on it. I just know its delicious. I highly recommend "The Bone" to anyone looking for your basic burger/fries/shake meal. P.S. I have lived here for 34 long years and never once been to this Anchorage staple. Arguably *the" Anchorage food staple. One of my best gals always goes when her mom is in town visiting and I was lucky enough (get it) to tag along a couple weeks ago. Though my companions ordered fried gizzards, burgers and a side of fries, I had to get the fried chicken as a complete wishbone novice. I ordered the mama meal, which consisted of 3 chicken pieces laying on a bed of fries. The fried chicken is quite good. They don't use a drippy, heavy batter, but more like a shake and fry approach. It was just a surprisingly light and crispy exterior and piping hot, perfectly cooked chicken interior. I really don't know how to explain it better. The gizzards and burger were ok, but I found much more satisfaction from my choice. I looked the menu over and was impressed to find a wide selection of hot and cold sandwiches. I also saw a huge chef salad being delivered and it looked amazing. The restaurant did not have a fried smell as I anticipated, was very clean and the staff was attentive and prompt. Looking forward to enjoying this staple again, but be forewarned - it is a very happening lunch time place, so go early or late and avoid the wait. read more

I saw a review of this place in ADN, which prompted me to research it on Yelp further. I love fried chicken, and was excited to try out a new place. After reading through the reviews (skipping ones that read like advertisements), After reading many accounts of bland food, I quickly concluded that I should lower my expectations, but I was still curious. My husband and I went for lunch a couple Saturdays ago, and was pleasantly surprised at how clean the establishment was. The service was extremely genuine and friendly - awesome! I loved the location, and was hoping that the food would also be better than expected. I ordered the 3 piece fried chicken meal with cole slaw (I read that this was a must-get from previous reviews). My husband got a burger and onion rings. When my fried chicken arrived, there were 3 small squares. Upon inspection, I could not readily identify what part of the chicken any of them were, or why they were the exact same size, when clearly the menu said I'd be getting a breast, leg or thigh, wing or back. These are all distinct looking piece, yet all of mine were exactly the same, all non-organic square shapes. Hmm... I selected what turned out to be most of a thigh (hence the square shape - it had been cut by a clever to be that shape?). The meat was dry, and EXTREMELY BLAND. I NEVER add salt to my food, and this was a requirement. I admit - the chicken was nicely fried on the outside, but just incredibly bland, and I've never had a thigh that was dry like that. Disappointed, but I'm glad I had lowered my expectations prior to arriving. I was still let down. My husband tried a piece, in what turned out to be maybe half of a breast. Seriously? Same thing - so bland. He commented on how he thought it tasted like what he'd imagine the food here tasted like when the restaurant first opened. So maybe that's it - it's original Anchorage fare? Definitely not "southern". This might also explain why so many establishments here are relatively bland - it's what the older generation is used to? The last piece turned out to be half of a back with no meat on it. Wow, could this place have gotten any cheaper with the cuts of chicken they gave me? I think not. My husband's burger was OK. Not anything impressive. The onion rings were nice and crispy, but still required salt. The breading they used was also very bland. The best things about my meal were the cole slaw, and the corn muffin. I liked the pineapple in the cole slaw. Too sweet to eat all of it, but it was good. The corn muffin was average, but I could add butter and honey to give it flavor, and after only eating my small piece of chicken and some cole slaw, I was hungry. I'm glad we went to experience this place for ourselves. Is this story of this place neat? Yes. Is the customer service great? Yes. Is the food good? No. Is it at least cheap and a good deal for what you get? No. Was the fried chicken, "The Best in Anchorage"? Absolutely not! Over several years I've tried the chicken at this establishment several times. Each and every time I ask the same question: Why do other people say they like this chicken so much? I understand that you don't want to seat big parties prior to them all being here but really we had 3 and one was walking in from the parking lot we pointed to him, and we still had to wait. The food was ok felt like mine was a mixed batch one piece was very gresse and the other was dry. Taste like a KFC that maybe scored a C on its health exam.
