Completely unexpected just a few miles from Camp Bowie. Reservations recommended. Came with a group and snagged half a dozen seats at the bar. Started with cocktails. Everyone was pleased. Heavy pours. Austin prices. Totally worth it. You know you are in the presence of culinary excellence when the menu is limited to less than a dozen items. Crab cakes. That is all. Order it. Eat it. Move along. Korean fried chicken is the bomb ! Get it. No regrets. As is the wedge. Pick a steak. Order it medium rare. It's truly that good. And, apparently, even if you aren't a fan of mac&chz - you can (and should) get it with seafood, steak, or that f'n delicious Korean fried chicken. Just get it to go and arm wrestle your 9 year old for it tomorrow. Poor kid is going hungry... Exceptional service. Owner is welcoming and awesome. Bar manager is awesome. Ambiance is awesome. We had reservations for four on a Friday evening at 6:00. It turned out we didn't need reservations. Although the bar was full, the dining area didn't start filling up until around 7:00. I had the Beef Wellington with Stilton sauce. It was the most tender, perfectly cooked piece of beef I've ever eaten. The mashed potatoes were amazing, as well. Service was extraordinary. As I've not yet been able to try the delicacies that appear in the pictures on YELP, they make my mouth water! They have an extensive bar, which is a plus and their steaks and sides look fabulous! Totally blown away. A fine steak house in Brownwood. Ambiance is very cool. Bar is beautiful serving awesome drinks--one of the best Old Fashions I've ever had. This was a gorgeous restaurant with amazing service. Honestly some of the best food I ever had. The Filet Mignon bites literally melted in my mouth. The drinks were delicious that I just had to have a second round. The entrees were a great portion size and equally delicious. The only reason I'm giving them 4 instead of 5 stars is because it took an hour from ordering to finally get the food. It's possible we were just an outlier with a ticket that was lost because the tables around us were served in a decent time. Either way, I'd still come back for the appetizer alone. read more

Been here three times, recommend the dinner for 2. Make sure to reserve if coming in the weekends for table service, if not there's bar for walk-ins but less service and tap water not herb-infused that you'd get dine-in. Highly recommend the stilton/house burger (NOT the L&M) and filet mignon at medium rare; the aged ribeye was not extraordinary- good but similar to other steakhouses. We enjoyed the spinach dip (big portion and broccolini mushrooms (sweet n salty). The L&M burger was a huge disappointment as it was incredibly salty, like a bunch of heavily marinated leftover steaks chopped. Come during weekend for more dessert options. We came weekdays for anniversary which they offer a dessert but not much choices. read more

I cannot rave enough about Lucille + Mabel's Kitchen and Libations. Chet Garner, host of The Day Tripper television show, featured this restaurant on one of the episodes. It looked so good and we love a good quality steak, so we decided to drive 3.5 hours (235 miles) to try it. It was worth every mile! Christian Nance is one of the owners. My husband called to make reservations and Christian's mom (Lucille's daughter-in-law) answered the phone. She was a delight and made my husband feel welcome on the phone. We learned later that she also has her hand in the homemade desserts. The attention to details in the dining room and bar are impressive. It's really hard to believe that this gem is in Brownwood, Texas. It is the perfect upscale steakhouse ambiance. The service was excellent. We started with drinks from the full service bar. They have their own drip infused old fashioned that goes down warm and smooth. I'm pretty particular about the quality of a west Texas chilton and they nailed it. I ordered the plain 9 oz filet and my husband ordered the 4oz filet medallions Trio with the cognac peppercorn cause, béarnaise sauce, and Stilton cream sauce. The steak is a high quality cut and age. They certainly prepared it in a manner that honored the cut. It was cooked perfectly and the flavor was amazing. It was served with rosemary potatoes and asparagus. During dinner, Christian introduced himself and we had a lovely chat. He thanked us for driving so far and shared some of his family's history with us. His grandmother was Lucille and his wife's grandmother was Mabel. Their experience in the food service and hospitality industry combined with their love and passion for what they do is evident; there is favor on this place. It is a real gift to the community and patrons that sit at their tables. He wanted to make sure the experience met our expectation. We explained that it was beyond expectation and our only stress was that we couldn't decide between the trio and the coffee crusted filet that was featured on the Day Tripper. Much to our surprise, Christian had a fully plated coffee crusted filet with fried lobster tail delivered to our table to try. Oh my! Not only was this an incredibly generous act, it tasted like heaven. The crusted exterior was the perfect tiny crunch that sealed in the juices. It may have been the best steak we have tasted... and we are not easily impressed when it comes to a steak. The fried lobster was delicate and flavorful; a nice departure from the chewy lobster served in other establishments. He explained that it is marinated for 24 hours in a marinade that includes butter and basil. For dessert, we enjoyed the homemade German chocolate cake (one of my favorite desserts). It didn't have the overpowering buttercream icing on it that many restaurants serve today. It was a good old fashioned scrumptious traditional German chocolate cake. We will for sure return and the next time we will splurge for the wagyu. Christian assured us it melts in your mouth. If you're in the neighborhood, or if you're not, it's worth the drive to get to Brownwood for Lucille + Mabel.... I have no doubt that Lucille and Mabel are beaming down with pride at this legacy. read more

Great ambience in this historic old bank. The decor really makes this a unique place: the old safes, bank lights, old banker uniforms etc. The service was great and the food delicious. While some of the meals are fairly pricey, there were several options under $40. The mixed drinks are really good although expensive. I would come back again! read more

When I realized I was going to spend the night in Brownwood I knew where and what I would be eating. I arrived on Friday, went straight to L &M for the G.O.A.T. Burger! This time the waiter ask which sauce would I like on the burger? Wait What? I can choose a sauce. He had me at peppercorn sauce. Talk about an incredible burger. Such a fantastic experience. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and so well done. This is my hometown, and I'm so proud to have such a nice restaurant here. Every bite we had was 5 star (and we are a picky group! We are good cooks, ourselves). The service (Stephanie) was wonderful. The owner, Christian, even came by to talk with us and make sure the steak was perfect. The serving sizes are large- even the appetizers. Diamond in the rough! I wish I could pick this place up and bring it with me to Austin it was that good. Started with the 24 hr drip old fashioned and was not disappointed. Great venue, very nice inside. But, as a place that specializes in steak, it was odd to order a medium rib eye and be served a well done New York strip. The appetizer and drinks came out great, staff was great. Their steak offerings are overpriced for the area and had a wonderful crust but meat was tough as shoe leather. I left 3/4 of it behind. You are better off going to any of their other steak places in town and save the $$. read more

This restaurant is a real gem right in the middle of Brownwood, TX. It's upscale but inviting, with an elegant atmosphere in what was long ago a bank on the ground floor of an old office building. The food was fantastic, including my dry-aged ribeye. Just cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Best steak I've had in ages. All of the food at our table was delicious, and the cocktails were also on point. I recommend the coffee-infused Old Fashioned. We had the Poutine from their lunch menu. Poutine is a wonderful and delicious concoction of deep-fried fries, poutine gravy and white cheddar cheese curds all tossed together and is one of the most quintessential Canadian dishes! Saying Lucille & Mabel's version was a disappointment would be an understatement. When it comes to poutine, it's really all about the cheese curds. Real cheese curds are what makes a poutine "authentic". The little cheese they used was either a very poor quality cheese curd or possibly mozzarella. It was definitely lack luster. If you've eaten a lot of poutine, you've probably experienced a wide range of gravy tastes. Some are clearly chicken, some are dark and beefy. The perfect one is somewhere in between. French-Canadians use 2/3 beef stock and 1/3 chicken stock, for a lightened up beef gravy. Lucille & Mabel's tasted more like a canned beef gravy than anything I've ever had in Canada. The carrot cake we had for dessert was okay - not great but not bad either. You could find a comparable one at most supermarket bakeries read more

Steaks were cold, mine especially since they cut it into strips like fajita meat Tons of fat on the steaks and that's fine if they're good but honestly they just weren't great and they sure aren't worth the amount they charge. Two available sides (but you only get one).. Mac and cheese or fries. Really? For $50? Ever had a restaurant make fries unedible? Go spend $50 there and you will. All that after sitting there FOREVER with no bread or anything else like most upscale steakhouses. Do yourself a favor and go to Wise meat market in San Saba and get a steak there. God I miss Hoffbrau Steaks. That's the kind of steakhouse that Brownwood needs, not whatever this place is trying to do. read more

Took my husband to this restaurant to celebrate his 50th birthday. Another couple joined us for the celebration. We arrived on time and were seated fine. The waiter was incredibly slow to get our drinks and appetizers. Our main course arrived about an hour after we were seated, and we continued to enjoy expensive bottles of wine and other drinks. We got a dessert for the table to enjoy to celebrate his BIG 50th....and were astonished that the hostess (and her mom?) came to ask us to hurry up and leave because there were people wanting our table. We could not believe what was happening, especially when our total bill with tip was approaching $1000 and we were still eating!
