One star because zero stars is not an option. My fried okra was cold. Like straight from the fridge cold. My baked potato was the size of a large lemon. Cold. My steak was well done instead of being medium well. Hubby's steak was rare instead of medium well. His fries were cold and tasted old. He sent his steak back and requested hot fries. He was given a different steak with zero seasoning and charred. Well done. Even after talking to the manager, he received yet another steak well done and charred. I got here early and beat the Friday night dinner crowd. By the time I left, people were filling up the dining room. Outside the parking lot was full and more people were coming inside. This is a popular place. I ordered the Filet which is 6 ounces along with a Baked Potato and Steamed Broccoli. The potato was pre-buttered plus there was a basket of butter patties on the table. The steak was delicious as was the baked potato. I cleaned my plate. The TV screen was across the room and the closed captioning was in a large font and easy to read from the other side of the room. So many times I've seen ESPN talking heads on a screen with no captioning and too small of a font making it hard to read. But this place was very accommodating. read more

They promised "It's pig lickin' good!" The rustic and friendly atmosphere was apparent from the moment we walked through the door. We were looking for a quick family dinner after a long day of travel. The waiter quickly picked up on our vibe with the round of tequilla shots. And he was prompt with the appetizers to further set the mood: Rattlesnake Eggs while we decided on entrees. . My grilled salmon was perfect. Great place to eat. We got there early, but the staff was very nice and went ahead and sat us. There was basically only a few people there the whole time we were there. It was quiet and not noisy. That was great because we were able to sit and talk. They brought out some delicious rolls to start out our meal. It was very hard not to eat the whole basket. We both ordered the Chipotle Grilled Chicken Sandwich. It was so good. It was a big piece of chicken. The jalapeño bun was award winning. It came with Swiss cheese, bacon, and jalapeños. I came here looking forward to a good meal but left feeling humiliated and judged. Upon arriving, I parked in a designated handicap spot, legally and with a visible placard displayed, because I live with a serious lung disease. Just because my disability isn't visible doesn't mean it's not real. Before I even was able to get to the front door, three employees approached me, questioning whether I had a right to park there. It was invasive, inappropriate, and incredibly insensitive. No one should be interrogated simply because they "don't look sick." I understand protecting accessibility, but there's a respectful way to approach concerns and this wasn't it. Invisible illnesses are just as valid as visible ones. This experience tainted the entire visit for me. Steakhouses are supposed to be about hospitality and comfort. This place made me feel anything but welcome. read more

I kept thinking the smell was coming in from outside. But when the waitress told me what it was I changed my order to go. Absolutely incredible place to eat! Get there early because they fill up fast... and for good reason!! The staff are incredible and very attentive! I don't think we went more than a minute or two before our server showed up to get the drinks started. Then he never let the glasses stay low! The food was top tier!! I had the chicken fried steak (Edith's portion) and it was still a very large steak! Cooked and seasoned to perfection! The fried okra was amazing!! My daughter had the grilled catfish and absolutely cleaned her plate! Highly recommend for anyone new to town or even the old timers that haven't been in a while! After years of just blowing through brownwood & Early, We finally had a chance to stop in and try some local food. To our surprise, not many local restaurants are open on Monday evening. We thought it was strange but nonetheless we settled on Humphrey Pete's! The building & environment is like your typical Steak house these days. Southern theme, slightly noisy but for sure what you sign up for at these type of places. Very friendly and good atmosphere. For starters We ordered the Rattlesnake Eggs & The Fried Mozzarella sticks. Both were cooked perfectly! If you're unfamiliar with Rattlesnake eggs, they are essentially your standard Jalapeño Popper. Whole jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped tightly with bacon & then wood smoked to perfection. The same detail was given to the fried Mozzarella. Hand battered and fried crisp, but not so much that the cheese pops out the side. Both dishes served with house made ranch! Always a plus! My daughter I both ordered Sirloins & I honestly do not have a complaint about them. Extra thick cut and they cooked them exactly to our specifications. Nothing like a wood fired, Smokey hunk of Beef! The only thing I can honestly suggest to these guys, they have got to work on their sweet tea. It was very mediocre. This is the South y'all. Your Sweet Tea Game has got to be on point! Now the star of the show....was the service! My mom raised me and my brother on tips serving in our family restaurant, so I've got a big o'l place in my heart for waitresses! The lady that helped us was honestly about as good as they come. I got talked into going out with family members about 7 PM to enjoy a meal. Normally, I don't hang out at places with bars, but I'm going back here. The service was excellent! Trace had all the answers to all of our questions and he was on top of everything and so sweet while he did it. We tried a little bit of everything. One of us got a giant salad. I got the jalapeño pork chop. And a couple shared a fried chicken dish. It was all delicious. The jalapeño pork chop was tender and cooked. Well, there were no jalapeños on it. It was a jalapeño flavor infused into the meat or seasonings. It was not dry. It was delicious. The salad had the usual thing of lettuce, but it was full of meat And all the veggies you could want. I'm not sure what dish the couple was sharing, but there seem to be a lot of fried chicken over there. Definitely a place to go back to bring your friends. It's very active and interesting. I was really looking forward to the ribeye here but had to cancel my order as soon as I put it in because I would rather smell the smoke from a mesquite grilled steak rather than the Marlboro's the table next to us were smoking. I'll start with a positive. I recently went to Pete's for the first time since the pandemic. My friend and I sat in the bar and ordered cocktails which were amazing. Unfortunately, the appetizer platter we shared was overcooked as was the chicken fried steak that I ordered for my husband. I took it home immediately and he said that it was inedible. It was extremely dry and tough, and he ended up throwing it away. I would have brought it back to the restaurant, but I had taken my friend home first and by the time I got home it was after 9:00 pm and restaurant was closed. Twenty dollars is a lot of money to throw away. I can only positively recommend Humphrey Pete's for the cocktails and atmosphere. I won't be eating there again. read more

They allow smoking in the bar area, when we walked in she asked us if we wanted smoking or non smoking, I was thinking who still allows smoking inside (so odd to us) we didn't smell any cigarette smoke but after sitting at the table a few minutes we could definitely smell it. The staff were friendly but who wants to smell cigarette smoke while they're trying to enjoy their food. The food was ok not near as good as when we ate here a few years ago. Unclear why there's a service charge for anything carry out. And the sorority chick behind the counter was every cliche imaginable. I'm from out of town and haven't eaten here since March 2006. I remember getting the quesadilla back then - it was "okay" and the atmosphere was kinda fun. I'm here on business this week with no time for a sit-in-a-restaurant meal. My company credit card also has restrictions regarding certain charges. I called in a carry-out order yesterday and the lady asked, "Are you aware of our 18% surcharge for carry-out orders?" I was stunned and said, "I wasn't. Thank you, and never mind." My company doesn't pay for delivery fees, there's no way they'd pay an extra 18% when I physically go to pick something up. I do appreciate her telling me this at the time of order. Maybe someday I'll get to revisit this place, but in my opinion, an extra 18% for carry-out is quite the money-making scheme. read more

We pulled in just as the after-church crowd was pulling out, and were luckily seated immediately, despite the full parking lot. The quick & dirty; this place flirted, hard, with a five star. Everything at the table (except a dessert that I felt had been sitting around a while) impressed our party of four. T-bones for the guys were cooked perfectly, salads were crisp & fresh (their house salad would be as good as Texas Roadhouse if they added egg, that is high praise for iceberg-based salad), and sides were good all around. (Damned sysco fried okra, tho.) I had the 8oz sirloin and shrimp w/3 fried shrimp. My steak was *perfect* in every way. Smoky, cooked exactly medium-rare, and tender. Awesome. I can only imagine what the t-bones tasted like! And the fried shrimp would definitely be worth a stop of its own. Definitely fresh & hand-battered, and as I'm in Galveston a lot I am PICKY about shrimp. Their cocktail sauce was perfect, as well, with just the right amount of spice. But the real winner had to be the jalapeno marinated pork chops my Mom ordered. Amazing. The jalapeno flavor was there, without adding any spice, then grilled to perfection. Unfortunately taking a star off for cleanliness & seating four of us at a four top; yes, "technically" that should be okay, but once the rolls and teas and butter basket and plates hit the table it's a hot mess.
