I've had lots of BBQ from all over the state and let me tell you, this family throws it down! In my opinion best bbq in town! Came by here yesterday while on a work trip and ordered the two meat plate (brisket and turkey) with Mac salad and some pinto beans with an extra 1/4lb of their pepper jack sausage. The meat was tender and had great flavor! It was smoky, salty, had just enough fat and was fork tender. No knives needed for this brisket but also wasn't falling apart, definitely passed the bend test! Our team decided to come back today for lunch so we could try some different items and they were just as good! I had the beast sandwich which was brisket, potato salad and jalapeño slaw on a bun and it was dynamite! Sounds crazy but lots of flavor! The green salsa was also a hit. Great flavor without too much spice! Everyone was super friendly and made us feel welcome and the place was clean, with some good music playing! We sat outside since it was such a nice day! What a great experience! I knew of this place because of Texas Monthly so I had to try it. I had the opportunity to visit with owner and pit master Junior and he was every bit as cool as he was in the BBQ TV shows I had seen him on. The food was amazing, I tried the bbq trinity of brisket, sausage and rib and everything was delicious. The service was excellent, everyone was super friendly and solid with their recommendations. Thanks to my awesome job, I have the opportunity to visit small towns and big cities, mostly around Texas. I make it a point to stop at a BBQ place everyday I visit a town. If you're reading this review, the food was great. I always get the same, a few ribs and a 1/4 pound of brisket. I never get any sauce cause I want to get the real taste of the meat I'm eating. Sometimes coloring outside the lines, or in this case dining off of the "Texas BBQ Trail" pays exceptional dividends. I've been following Junior Urias and his restaurant Up In Smoke BBQ for quite some time and finally got the chance to visit them. Not only does Junior have a the restaurant, he also has a full-fledged butcher shop next door. When I arrived I saw the cutter slicing up some ribs and brisket so I went with the two-meat & two-side combination. The pork ribs are had great texture...firm but moist and the rub made for a perfect rib needing nothing else! The brisket has a nice peppery crust with just enough fat to bring out the best flavors in this moist cut of beef. Neither needed any sauce, but I did try the homemade (vinegar based) sauce and it is a great complement to the meat. The sides of Creamy Mac & Cheese and Cowboy Potato Salad were stars in their own right. The Cowboy Potato Salad was like a twice baked potato but in potato salad form and the Mac & Cheese is the style that will stick to your ribs! They also brine their own pickles and purple onions...perfect additions to the BBQ platter! I then visited the Butcher Shop next door...meats, rubs, sauces, and cutlery is available for purchase. Junior invited me to try his personal creation...house-made Jalapeño Popper sausages, not to be confused with Jalapeño Cheddar sausages. This sausage shocked me how the flavors meshed and how much it tasted like a popper. You can tell Junior has a lot of pride in his craft. He then showed me something new he was working on...60-day wet aged ribeye. He took me out to his smoker and showed me a thick cut Ribeye covered with his rub, slow cooked in the smoker. He was kind enough to cut up a ribeye and shared some with me. For a carnivore...this was a wow moment. The beef was so tender...it just melted in your mouth and the rub was perfect flavor for this cut of beef. I don't have a lot of experience with wet-aged beef, but this ribeye is one of the best I've had. Overall...an incredible experience not just for the meal but the family atmosphere Junior and his staff shared. Up In Smoke BBQ may be off the beaten path, but you will find great food along with warm hospitality for your travels. read more

Our first visit to Up in Smoke BBQ. It was recommended by a local Brownwood resident. It did not disappoint. I had the Junior Plate which was much like a sample plate, Brisket, Rib, Sausage and I chose the traditional Potato Salad. It was all great. We also had the Cowboy Potato Salad that I would highly recommend. I did get a sample of the Pork Belly from Junior. Pork Belly will be on my plate on my next visit. read more

Was extremely impressed with their food. Ordered the Junior plate with mexican sausage, moist brisket and ribs. If you aren't sure which sausage to get, they let you have a sample of each to help make the decision. The brisket was the juiciest and the meat on the rib was falling off the bone. The mac & cheese had a jalapeño kick, which added some nice flavor to it. Even the toast was the perfect amount of buttery. They have 3 long tables to eat at, so you might have to get close and personal to some of your neighbors, but the day I came there was plenty of space. Awesome. This is competition winning craft BBQ. The jalapeño popper sausage is perfect! It isn't too hot, savory warm flavor. He also makes a jalapeño cheese sausage that IS too hot (for me, probably not for you). Brisket, pork belly, sides, and ribs are great! He and his wife are super nice people too. We are now buying our (uncooked) brisket and pork butt from his market next door instead of the Walmart and United stores. He gets the good stuff, Duroc pork and Snake River Farms brisket. Great food! Some of the best I've had. The staff is happy to work with you to make your meal to your liking, but you have to tell them. I have them take off the fat off a Brisket sandwich and there is more than enough to take home. Their Cowboy Potato Salad is a welcome change from the same old boring stuff. The Q was good, but be wary of the plates. They charge by the lb. for their plates. I had the brisket and sausage, one side and a small drink and it cost over $31. I realize Q can be expensive but this was a bit too much for one person. They provide the usual "complimentary" onions, pickles, and peppers, but no bread. Excellent BBQ!!! Moist Brisket just pulls apart. The ribs were so tender and flavorful. Meats are priced by the pound, pricey and Totally worth it. The mustard potato salad was very yummy, loved the dill in it. Bread was soft and delicious. There is a bbq sauce that is warm, thin, and tasty. Didn't really add it to the meats, their own flavor was excellent. I added it to the beans for an extra kick. We stepped into the meat market next door for a few items. So excited I finally got to try Juniors famous Barbecue!!!! And let me say, it didn't disappoint! We tried the fatty brisket and it had the perfect deep pink smoke line. The season crust was done just right. Next was the jalepeno sausage....do yourself a favor and get this as one of your meats. Great texture and flavor was perfect. My only letdown was the sides. Tried the hatch Chile Mac n cheese....it was over cooked which I can understand, but no flavor. The beans were good basic pintos, but very bland. Sides are usually a problem at really good bbq places...I wish they would get better!!! I loved the homemade pickled onions and pickles. Don't forget to ask for a side of pickled jalapeños. Last but not least is the bbq sauce. Tons of spices, wonderful tangy flavor, and not thick at all. All in all this place is as good as the other one name place in Austin....but you won't stand in line for an eternity at Up in Smoke. We will be back! read more

We are visiting the area and we had read about this in the magazine, Texas Monthly. Wow!!! We had the 2 meat platter (brisket and ribs) with 2 sides ( both of us had the hatch mac and cheese) plus a side of pork belly. Everything was absolutely cooked to perfection and was so flavorful both my wife and I forgot to use the sauce! We had the pleasant opportunity to meet the owner, Junior Urias. He is about as fine a guy as God ever put on this earth. The ambience is very bar b que ish. Outdoor seating and some really neat signs, artwork, and sculptures. Do your tastes buds A BIG favor and take them to Up In Smoke. They will love you and you will not be disappointed. They are only open Fri. and Sat. 11-2. I got the slice of heaven. This is a full packed plate of six different meats. Surprisingly, or not, I finished everything. The meal was fantastic! They make a few of the sausages in-house and they were amazing! The pork belly was delicious. They have just enough smoke. This is a genuine Texas-style barbecue experience. We live in east Texas, and our good friends live in Comanche. They had had a serious accident and we were too far away to help them! So I called Up IN Smoke, and had them deliver a meat tray with beans and potato salad. And our friends said it was wonderful! They wanted to know the name of the restaurant so that when they are up and about again, they can frequent it. I was just so pleased that being so far away I could get some GOOD food delivered to them. Comanche is 22 miles from Early Texas. The person I talked with was so helpful and accommodating.
