Summer helped us navigate the menu, and hooked it up our cinnamon roll with some butter warmed up to start. Ask for grilled biscuits, it's an absolute must. While Summer welcomed other guests walking in, checked in on her other tables she made sure we had all we needed once our breakfast came. This was my first time eating here. It was still dark at breakfast time and it seemed like parking was crowded outside but inside it wasn't even half full. There is a ten seat counter available, ten booths, and at least 16 tables, a few of them seating six or more. It is a good place to eat because there are a lot of local people eating here. Service was friendly, respectful, and well mannered. I ordered two eggs, sausage, hash browns and toast. I think my food arrived in record time. They did have quite a few folks working in the kitchen. My meal was very good. I will definitely return here for breakfast again. read more

Since there are few choices in Brownwood for breakfast mid day, i keep trying Red Wagon from time to time. Food is ok, staff is ok, but the wait time is totally unacceptable. Their response to this problem is even more unacceptable. Today we were seated for an hour and 15 minutes waiting for a bacon and egg breakfast. We left without ever receiving food. Management had a couldn't care less attitude and commented, thats just the way it is. Obviously management is the real problem. The over medium eggs had runny whites. The hash browns were slightly brown on the edges, but mostly loose potato flakes, tough and somewhat warm. The sausage patties were tough enough that I used a knife to cut a bite from one. On the plus side, the coffee was hot, fresh, and flavorful. The service was excellent. We went for the first time today and it was very busy, every time we come through town it seems to be busy so we assumed it must be good. We ordered the lunch special, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, black eye peas, collard greens, white gravy, rolls and a piece of cake. We should've ordered the breakfast since that's what they seem to be known for. The potatoes tasted like the boxed flake kind, the gravy was definitely powered, collard greens were tasteless no seasoning at all, black eye peas were ok. Waited 20 plus minutes for our food while everyone around us who came later got theirs. Then at the register the owner is over here rolling her eyes (not exactly sure why). Asked if they had military discount out of curiosity to which she rudely responds "if I did, my prices would be higher etc (couldn't hear the rest cuz my child was screaming) but honestly a simply no would've been just fine didn't have to add all the extra stuff. I was traveling from Pecos back to my home in Troup alone, about a 9-10 hour drive, and found this little gem of a place after a few failed attempts at closed restaurants in 3 towns before. Cute decor! When I walked in, my phone was almost dead and they found a place to let me charge it. I ordered something off menu and they did an amazing job! Breakfast I'm Brownwood this morning. It was an old "dinner" feel. I was not impressed with the "biscuits" but to each his own. Hash browns were good good and my well done bacon was fantastic!! I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast here. Even on a busy Sunday morning I was able to get a seat immediately. Service was fantastic. The waitress took our drinks orders quicky and we had both our drinks and food within a short amount of time. The breakfast special was 4.89 and it included two eggs, bacon, toast and hash browns. The food was pretty good and the restaurant had homemade salsa to put on the eggs. I definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

Generally you can't go wrong at the Wagon. Get the lunch special, breakfast or a burger and it's consistently good. Sometimes it's really smokey and sometimes it's not too bad. The coffee is perfect diner coffee. Nothing fancy. Onion rings are great. Patty melt is delicious. Meatloaf Mondays are my favorite. The specials they have on the white board menu can be hit or miss. Soups are usually awesome. The Reuben is something to avoid at all costs. The club is a classic and is always good. Get there early for biscuits or grits. If you get there too late you may miss out on the good veggies on the lunch. The waitresses are sassy and some of the best in town. read more

I was one of a party of four on a Sunday morning. We were seated after a few minutes but not forewarned that the food would not be ready for 45 or more minutes. Prices were low and the rest of the party was satisfied with their choices. I ordered French toast and I would not recommend it to anyone. The TV was set to OAN. I recently visited this place for the first time since living here for 4 years. I always heard that the breakfast is amazing but the place is disgusting and covered in smoke. Well, we went and they had completely gotten rid of the smoking section and cleaned the walls and all that good stuff. So is it still a old diner feel, yes. Something's changed at the Red Wagon. New cook? The chicken fried steaks just aren't the same anymore. It went from a fairly decent batter to what I can only call a grease-skin. Everything else is pretty much the same, but the chicken fried steak is the usual daily special, and I think this has really upset a lot of people. Sunday is turkey and dressing day, but lately, something's funky with the turkey and the dressing. Someone posted about it being non-smoking, but I've never seen that change. The whole place is SMOKING except for a little room in the back. If they served beer and dimmed the lights a little, it'd be busy all night. read more

I had lunch today with my Mother and her boyfriend and it was OK. While I was growing up my father (3 packs a day) got me used to cigarette smoke during a meal so I was not especially bothered by the smoking section. I had the chicken salad sandwich with the homemade beef and vegetable soup and both were good. I also had the fried okra which was good as well. I agree with all the other reviewers here - stick to the specials and you should not be disappointed. The food was very good. The staff was sweet as could be. We stopped in for breakfast at the start of a roadtrip from Austin to New Mexico. We had standard breakfast fair of scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, biscuits and a pork chop! However, they allow SMOKING IN THE RESTAURANT. Are you kidding me??? Is it 1980??? There's a smoking section, but you obviously can smell smoke throughout the restaurant! I'm disappointed that smoking indoors is even legal. Come on Texas!!! read more
