The staff is always friendly, yet professional, and the best experience was sitting at the hot 920 degree oven in the back, which is where the action is. The truly Italian pizzaiolo here slaving by the hot woodfired oven only cooks the pies for a little over a minute, and if requested will make a heart shaped pizza for the ladies. They have local beers on draft and use as fresh as possible local ingredients for toppings. Lucia's is delish for brunch as well as dinner. They have the BEST French Toast ever. Probably bc they homemake their bread and they are the bread masters. Slather some mascarpone on it and berries and you're in heaven. Their cappuccinos are also wonderful. You will feel like you're in Italy, except you're not, you're in Berkeley and you didn't need to fly 9 hours there. They also have all the usual delish egg dishes, with some Italians twists. Came across this spot from purchasing a pizza at the Grand Lake farmers market. We love Neapolitan pizza and this place knocks it out of the park. The crust had the right amount char and chewiness. Sometimes neapolitan pizzas are super flimsy towards the center but theirs is just sturdy enough. I got the Lips of Fire. While not really spicy, I did like the flavor even with the maple syrup. My friend ordered the Quattro Formagi that was much more upfront with the maple syrup. He wasn't a fan. Portions are on the smaller side here but the few items I tried were good quality and tasted good. I especially enjoyed the calamari which was perfectly crispy and not greasy at all. The sauce was creamy and tangy and a nice change from your typical marinara sauce. The papedelle alla bolonese was also good but less memorable and a bit heavy for my taste. The space is intimate and casual, as you would expect from a neighborhood restaurant. I came into Lucia's with a few friends during restaurant week a while back. I ordered the Quattro Formaggi pizza, which came with maple syrup as well (an odd pairing, but it worked well enough). The quality of the pizza was decent, but for $17 I was left thinking the value wasn't really there. Service was fine, I like the space a lot (all of its previous incarnations have always felt intimate without feeling crowded). HUGE props to Lucia's for amazing service. My friend and I ordered a pizza through UberEATS right before closing time on a Sunday night. Half an hour later, the UberEATS app still said that our food was being prepared, so we called in to check on our order. Talked with Alejandro(?), who said that our pizza had been ready for a while, but that the UberEATS driver was MIA. Alejandro and I both contacted UberEATS support and, after several calls total, the driver finally started heading toward Lucia's to pick up our order. It'd been nearly an hour since we'd placed the order--and way past Lucia's closing time--but Alejandro was fantastic about keeping us updated on his communications with Uber, and even made us a new pizza because the first one had gotten cold. The folks at Lucia's obviously care a lot about their customers and handled a frustrating situation with thoughtfulness far beyond their responsibility. -- If you see this, thank you so much! read more

My husband and I came here for Valentine's Day and we were shocked by how bad and overpriced the food was. First we started with the arugula salad, which was a dry, bitter, and plain dish--basically just arugula with shaved Parmesan, a single strawberry cut into 4 pieces, and no dressing. Then we had two entrees: First, the sausage party pizza, which was extremely bland. There was no sauce at all on the pizza, the mozzarella wasn't fresh or fully melted, and the sausage was very plain. Our second entree was the radicchio lasagna, off the special Valentine's Day menu. This was the most paltry portion of lasagna I ever had, and tasted weird. There was hardly any cheese, and very few layers of noodles. We left hungry and disappointed, and our food--along with a couple of beers--came to a total of $85! Worst restaurant experience ever. Best pizza in Berkeley. Really nice people, the wine on tap was great, the salads and sides inventive and done with good ingredients. The pizza is the best thing there though. Perfectly cooked and the dough they use for the crust is really delicious. Dessert was very nice as well. The only draw back is the price. We paid over $300 for 8 people having a pizza dinner. Last Wed.(10/13) three of us decided to dine @ Lucia's without reservations. The restaurant was pretty full but after a short wait time Elizabetta (Host/Owner) graciously fit us in among the "reserves"! We were very grateful as our friend was an out of town visitor & we wanted to share a local dining experience. Of course, the draw for me is the Neapolitan pizza crust. Whatever topping selected just enhances the crust... the special that evening was a delicious squash topping! Although the Kale salad was a tad too salty due to, too much of a good thing (pecorino cheese) the Calamari & Pappardelle Alla Bolognese was satisfying in taste & texture. Our meal was enhanced by Brandon our waitperson with just the right amount of care with timely "touch base" during our dinner. The evening started with accommodating our presence, excellent meal choices & attentive service that reflects a business that cares about their local customers. from all the superlative reviews I came in with very high expectations. Took Giorgia & arrived 8:30 Friday 2/25/17. Lots of seating..friendly gregarious owner/partner Steve waited on us. Giorgia's Negroni variant with prosecco was yummy as was the arugula salad. But the pizza just didn't rise to the exalted levels we hoped for. The crust was rather bland and the thick edges were a bit gluey... underdone?. When I squeezed the edge it stuck together rather than spring back. As a former baker, sous chef and obsessive home cook I think they need to tweak the dough or the cooking times or both. Chez Panisse still has our vote for the outstanding sturdy flavorful airy chewy crust..beats everyone else in the East Bay..but as they say "its your mouth & your tongue and pizza, like sex, is real personal!" Steve asked how we liked it & Giorgia was very forthright..he took it in stride and said we could request it to be more done next time...he also brought us a free gelato delicious! also for the geriatrics like us another too loud music venue ..I had to move from facing Giorgia to sitting on her left (that's her good ear) so we could talk and be heard...love ya babe! read more

I'm vegan and gluten free, and I've pretty much given up on eating pizza. Having lived outside of Rome for 4 years in the 2000s, I miss it. It was lucky happenstance that brought me to Lucia's. I got the gluten free vegan Margherita, and the crust was so good I thought they'd made a mistake. But no, it was really GF! And soooo delicious (with Miyoko's Mozzarella). It is typical Italian style. I recommend with the arugula on top. The chef came out to talk to my friend about her son's allergies (he was definitely authentically Italian) and I was impressed by the care they put into food preferences and allergies. If you are vegan and/or gluten free and looking for delicious Italian pizza, this is the place for you! read more

The pizza was great. Had the prosciutto and arugula pizza, and the crust was thin, chewy, and nicely charred. Really good. We got the pizza and fries for two of us, and it was sufficient. The fries needed salt, and didn't seem like the fries were salted out of the fryer, which was unfortunate. The day wasn't super hot day, and the restaurant was pretty warm. The pizza oven, while very cool, does make the restaurant very warm, especially near the back. I would recommend sitting as close to the door as possible, if it's a warm day. read more

Went in at 11:40 am, the restaurant was quiet, we got seated right away and water is severed. We ordered the margherita pizza and Porchetta Hush, waited 30 minutes for the food to come out. The table next to us came in about 15 mins after we put in our order and yet they got all their food first including a Margherita pizza. I ask the waiter about our order and his excuse is the porchetta takes longer to make?! (It's a scramble of onion, bell pepper and potato top with an egg and avocado, how difficult can it be?) Once the Porchetta came out another 5 mins for the pizza to finally come and no apology whatsoever. The pizza was good but very stingy on the basil leaves, only 2 tiny pieces on the pizza. Also, they charge 20% to the bill (say so on their menu) regardless of how satisfied you are with their services. First time visited this restaurant today 3/17/18 but don't think I'll want to come back again. read more

I love an authentic Margherita pizza. I try to go to many places, even learnt to make it in my own kitchen using the stove top and regular oven. Here's my take: Lucia's pizza is very close to authentic Margherita pizza: slightly crispy bottom crust and chewy top crust. Their house made oil is also very tasty. Definitely the best tasting pizza in Berkeley area, and the closest you can get from authentic Neapolitan pizza without flying to Naples. Steve, the owner, is super nice and friendly. He's from Brooklyn and had lived in Italy before. The main chef is Italian (I ain't sure about the others). If you can, sit at the table near the wooden oven in the back to see how he makes the pizza and catch a conversation with him when he's not busy. Will definitely come back soon! read more

He was extremely friendly and hospitable and you could tell that he actually enjoys his job. Atmosphere (4/5): Smaller, more intimate setting that's charming, yet sleek with no-frills. All the decor fits in really well and there's a quieter vibe that's nice. Food and Drink (5/5): I had the margarita pizza which was really delicious. The pizza is a thinner crust and the tomato sauce is a thinner consistency and very flavorful. I also enjoyed my cocktail (prosecco, rosemary, and lemon and pear juice). It was definitely on the sweeter side for my personal taste but the flavors were refreshing and yummy. It is a bit on the pricier side, but considering that they pay their employees a living wage (it says it on the receipt and I asked about it), that's totally understandable. Gratuity is also automatically added which is fine and also great for their employees considering that I had no issues with the service. My friend and I walked in on a recent Friday early evening, craving pasta. The place was busy but the hostess found us a table near the door after a few minutes. We ordered the Calamari Fritti ($11.50) and the pasta vongole ($19). Both portions were very small, especially relative to the price. I have no complaints about the quality of the food, which was decent. The photo of the Calamari on the restaurant's website is not anywhere near accurate with what we were served. The waitress warned us that the pasta portion was on the small side, and indeed it was! I'm not one to place great weight (so to speak) on the portion size when evaluating restaurants, but the serving sizes provided by this restaurant are riduculous. I won't be back.. read more
