My younger sister bought cookbook with Luby's pie recipes, and made a few of the pies this Thanksgiving! They were great! I got to have original recipes Chess Pie and Pumpkin Pie!!! :) Luby's uses updated or changed recipes, and it's not the same. My mom and had Thanksgiving lunch at Luby's and it was great. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful! Even though the food is served cafeteria style, we tipped. These workers put their families on hold for later so that we could enjoy our Thanksgiving and for that we are blessed and thankful. Thank you Luby's!

This is a review on the Texas chicken N' Waffle only, available only during breakfast this location in Mcallen on weekends. It's a weekend morning, and my goal and treat to myself for the week was to seek out a chicken and waffle combo. To show you how much of a foodie I am I even went to the length of using google to find out who offered it in the area. Yelp has been acting funny lately, so had to be resourceful. I come across a link that talks about how Luby's is offering a sit down breakfast menu as opposed to the usual cafeteria/buffet style. Included in the menu is Texas chicken n' waffles. Right away, I made it my goal of the week to seek it out I mean its got Texas, chicken, and waffles all in one phrase, what's there not to like? Fortunately, one of the locations they offered this was located in McAllen. NOTE: Not all Luby's offer the sit down breakfast menu. Ambiance: the place is nice with booths and regular tables available as well as Tvs. The staff is pleasant and accommodating. Presentation: As you can see in the pix, the presentation was good. Taste: Hmm....I've eaten a of waffles so I have become particular. The waffle texture seemed to light as if there wasn't enough batter in the mix. The fried chicken was simple and good but not great. I sense that maybe in the rush they didn't let the chicken rest in paper towels before placing on the waffle, since the waffle seemed to have a fried oil taste. The chipotle sauce was good and paired well with the chicken. At $9.99, I felt it could have been better, but based on web link I read, this menu is still on its trial stage, so I hope it improves over time.

Staff didn't even acknowledge me or take my order in the 20 minutes I was there waiting at the bar. The place wasn't busy, there were maybe 3 other pairs of people at the bar and 2 tables taken up. It was 6 PM on a Thursday so the place was close to empty. The bartender was too busy talking to the barback and didn't even take my order. In that time, he checked on other customers at the bar then returned to his conversation with his coworker. It's never good for a bartender to do the rounds and ignore a client that hasn't yet been served ESPECIALLY on a slow night. This type of treatment can make a client feel profiled or discriminated against. Nothing else to say about this, never going back and I'll gladly recommend other places to people looking for a GOOD bar in McAllen.

Mind you we spent nearly $500 on drinks while there and couldn't get a Seidel of guacamole we were willing to pay for. Even though they had guacamole on their menu in other food entrees. The tostadas were pretty bland. The cucumber margaritas were good. However the mango margarita was a miss. The prices did not match the quality of service and food we received, honestly if you have other options for bars go there. This one was a huge miss in my Opinion.

We ordered a few appetizers and were surprised (and excited) to see that Cheddar's brought back their Homestyle Onion Rings. Unfortunately, that's where things started to go downhill. It took about 15-20 minutes for the appetizer to come out, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. No apology for the delay, and when it finally arrived, it wasn't even hot. The onion rings had more breading than onion and were clearly not the same as the original recipe -- very disappointing. My side Caesar salad took forever as well, and when it arrived, the lettuce wasn't fresh, with several pieces showing brown spots and way too much dressing. I decided to try the Filet Mignon that's currently on the limited-time menu, which is advertised as their "most tender cut." Sadly, there was nothing tender about it. The chicken strips we ordered were also extremely tough and rubbery. Our server disappeared for long stretches, which only added to the frustration. We hadn't been to Cheddar's in a long time because the quality and service had gone downhill -- and this visit confirmed that nothing has changed. Honestly, a sirloin steak at Applebee's would have been more tender than the "filet" I was served. Sadly, we won't be returning anytime Based on our experience yesterday, it feels like Cheddar's may have shifted from a value-driven "scratch kitchen" to more of a mass-market, less-consistent chain under corporate ownership -- which might explain the issues we encountered. Darden should do better as a company and stop buying out good restaurants and turning them into junk.

The ambiance is that if a five star establishment one goes to when celebrating a special occasion. It's exclusively an indoor dining establishment. During our first brunch visit, the waitstaff's enthusiastic recommendations felt a bit overwhelming--almost to the point of pressure--but we chalked it up to eagerness to help new guests get acquainted with the menu. The space has a club-like vibe, likely aiming for something virtual and modern, but compared to places we've experienced globally, it didn't quite hit the mark. We started with a dish we believed was our appetizer, but it turned out to be something else entirely--our actual order followed and ended up being almost a duplicate but with much less flavor. That made the meal feel heavier than expected. My husband found his plate fairly average, but we understand that new places often need time to refine their offerings. When the bill came, we noticed we were charged for the original appetizer. No fuss--we paid for what we ate and had the rest boxed up. Unfortunately, the green chilaquiles didn't reheat well and lacked flavor the second time around, as well. I dislike throwing food away, but it wasn't worth a sour stomach and ruining the rest of the day. So, I opted to throw it out. Because the restaurant came recommended a couple of weeks later by a friend, we gave it another try. Again, the staff greeted us warmly, though they forgot to bring out the complimentary bread. My husband politely reminded the manager, who graciously handled it himself. This time we brought my daughter. She ordered the stuffed chilaquiles, we had been served previously as an appetizer. The plate this time was overly drenched in a bland sauce. I requested salt to balance it out, and my daughter eventually gave up, scraping off most of the excess and leaving the rest. She was disappointed and left with an upset stomach. My husband mistakenly ordered the regular chilaquiles--made with an enchilada-style sauce instead of a fresh salsa--which was unfortunately a miss again. I had tried to warn him, but the loud club-style music made conversation difficult. I had ordered the same dish on my first visit and left most of it untouched for the same reason: the overwhelming amount of sauce that turned everything mushy. In the end, we paid for a meal that none of us finished -- not once but twice. While we appreciate the staff's energy and hospitality, the food's execution just didn't meet our expectations. Sadly, we don't anticipate returning.

I was going to go with 4 stars, but then thought about it ... they did everything right. I happened to be in this general area, while visiting the famous main branch of the McAllen Public Library, which holds the record for being the largest library on one level in either the U.S., North America, or the world. Dinnertime was approaching and a barbecue place sounded just like what I needed. Cowboy Chicken is in a strip mall close enough to the library. Parking is easy and, once inside, you go through a short line to order what you want to eat, with some people eating in and others taking out. I do like to eat this regional barbeque food on occasion, and it's something I do at least once every time I'm in the Houston metro area. I always go for the 2 item combination platter. However, in the Houston area, I don't seem to land on places that offer both brisket and boneless chicken. So, in Houston, I get brisket and turkey ... and I'm still a happy camper. At this Cowboy Chicken, I asked if I could get chicken as one of the 2 meats and if it could be (a) boneless piece(s). The young lady helping me said that I could and was very helpful. I took my tray to the simple but airy eating area and started to dig in. Everything, including the sides, was delicious. The chicken and the brisket were very much to my liking. I'm not being a big baby by always asking for boneless stuff, but who wants to mess with bones and scales when eating outside of their home or at a backyard event? I wanted to add that the portion size was satisfying and that the pricing was appropriate. This "main" Cowboy Chicken has a lot of good things going for it - the food, the service, the portions, the value, and, above all, what I perceived to be a strong focus on the customer. So there you have it. If visiting the impressive main branch of the McAllen Public Library and get hungry, you might stop by Cowboy Chicken for a meal. How does that sound for a field trip?
