El Portón has quickly become our go to spot for tacos and Mexican food. It's a great hometown restaurant, just a couple blocks east of the expressway on University Dr. I have been four times, and each time the quality of the food and service has been excellent. The freshly made tortillas are delicious. They offer a variety of tacos, hamburgers and seafood. They have the usual tacos of bistec, fajita, trompo (al pastor), and chicken. They also offer cabeza, tripa, fish and shrimp. Taco orders include chips and salsa, as well as delicious charro beans. I was grateful the charro beans don't have chunks of pig skin or hot dogs floating in them. There are daily specials for lunch and for dinner. I want to come on a Thursday for lunch for the enchiladas suizas! The staff has been very pleasant and efficient each time I've come. The dining room is eclectically decorated with a souvenir plate collection as well as a collection of oil lamps displayed on shelves. The atmosphere is pleasant and family oriented. There is a TV (silent when I've been). There is music (usually norteño), but not too loud. The salsa is spicy but good. I prefer the green salsa. The panchos have shredded fajita meat and are great. I also love the loaded chicken tostadas! Awesome! My favorite tacos are the Tacos Monterrey which include avocado and grated white Mexican cheese (queso fresco). My wife loves the tacos de bistec and the papas (potatoes). The parking lot is limited but nice. I've not seen the bathrooms, but the dining area is always spotless. So I would think their cleanliness extends there too. We've only ordered take out as it's close to home, but I would enjoy dining in and believe you will also.

Great food. The chips and salsa were spot on. The beans were flavorful. The potato was the best part because they use real cheese and not the bag stuff. Staff was friendly and attentive. Service was on the slower end but it was a busy night. Will return.

It is also apparently quite popular with locals, which is a good sign! The location is easy to find on the corner of W. University Drive and 6th Ave. by the railroad tracks. The building is old and has probably been repurposed multiple times. There are just a few spaces to park directly in front but there are more places to park on the east side. The food was wonderful. The ceviche was mounded high on the tostada, a little salty, but mild; I added some of the salsa provided it was excellent. The seafood soup was also delicious and chuck full of fresh fish and shrimp. The broth was a typical Mexican style, but not spicy. The cocktail sauce is also Mexican style. Do not expect the traditional American style cocktail sauce with horseradish. This sweeter, tomatoey Mexican style cocktail sauce is what most want here. They do have plenty of Tabasco sauce if you prefer that. The Mar y Tierra botana platter for 2 was enough to feed at least 3 or 4. It came loaded with fish, shrimp, and fajitas along with multiple sides. My son really enjoyed it ...even as leftovers the next day. There are a few Americanized aspects: the fish on the botana platter was lightly breaded with what I think was a cornmeal /flour mixture, Southern style, and had a good flavor. The French fries also had a great light crispy coating. The platter included a couple of other American sides: onion rings and hush puppies. All these on top of chips (totopos), beans, and garnished with fresh avocado... This is a popular place, and seating is limited. So if you go on a Friday night like we did, be prepared to wait to be seated, and wait a while for your food. There was also a pretty long take-out line. Once the food arrived we really enjoyed it, but there was a significant wait. I'd like to return on perhaps a Monday or Tuesday night. The décor is rustic with a beachy yet homey feel (because of the old building). I've been to classier and fancier looking places, but but I don't think anyone goes to La Pesca for the ambience. They go for the food, and it is good enough to wait for if you happen to arrive at a busy time.
