I have been to McAllen TX ... and have even eaten there (2 of 2) I saw that many reviewers are awarding Cowboy Chicken 5 stars. I was going to go with 4 stars, but then thought about it ... they did everything right. I happened to be in this general area, while visiting the famous main branch of the McAllen Public Library, which holds the record for being the largest library on one level in either the U.S., North America, or the world. Dinnertime was approaching and a barbecue place sounded just like what I needed. Cowboy Chicken is in a strip mall close enough to the library. Parking is easy and, once inside, you go through a short line to order what you want to eat, with some people eating in and others taking out. I do like to eat this regional barbeque food on occasion, and it's something I do at least once every time I'm in the Houston metro area. I always go for the 2 item combination platter. However, in the Houston area, I don't seem to land on places that offer both brisket and boneless chicken. So, in Houston, I get brisket and turkey ... and I'm still a happy camper. At this Cowboy Chicken, I asked if I could get chicken as one of the 2 meats and if it could be (a) boneless piece(s). The young lady helping me said that I could and was very helpful. I took my tray to the simple but airy eating area and started to dig in. Everything, including the sides, was delicious. The chicken and the brisket were very much to my liking. I'm not being a big baby by always asking for boneless stuff, but who wants to mess with bones and scales when eating outside of their home or at a backyard event? I wanted to add that the portion size was satisfying and that the pricing was appropriate. This "main" Cowboy Chicken has a lot of good things going for it - the food, the service, the portions, the value, and, above all, what I perceived to be a strong focus on the customer. So there you have it. If visiting the impressive main branch of the McAllen Public Library and get hungry, you might stop by Cowboy Chicken for a meal. Had lunch here twice and the rotisserie chicken has been solid. Very juicy, hot and falls off the bone. Flavorful for sure. I tried the fried okra, Mac n cheese, twice baked potato, rice and green beans. Nothing stellar, but compliments the chicken well. The mac n cheese is my favorite. Called restaurant to see what was going on and they were not friendly at all and could care less. They would only say the guy was out and delivering. Love this place for the value and the taste. But I would also like to add that the service here is top notch. We celebrated my mom's birthday here yesterday and we could not have felt more welcomed. They congratulated her and even joined us in the singing. They made sure we had all the plates and cups we needed and were very attentive the entire time. Chicken enchiladas are to die for, in a creamy green sauce. The chicken inside is delicious, but the sauce is out of this world. So much so that I've never gotten around to ordering anything else. I have tried some sides - I liked like the Mac n cheese, ranch style beans and their banana pudding is fantastic. My husband loves their Buffalo drumsticks - like wings, but meatier, he says. One star off for slow service. I once ordered from here on door dash and my driver had to wait so long she eventually left, and I had to go pick up my own order after waiting for over an hour and a half. There are so many delicious-sounding choices that it was hard to decide what to order! We found both the grilled and rotisserie chicken to be very tender and flavorful. The sides were a bit under-seasoned for my taste, but still good. The cucumber/tomato salad was very fresh. The blackberry cobbler was overly sweet and mushy. We ordered it without ice cream, but I think it would be better with ice cream. I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the chicken. The worker was very friendly. She suggested we download the app for $5 off. It made for a cheap meal. The Mac and cheese was good, and so was the bread. The twice baked potato side was just ok. You can eat healthier here if you get a salad or maybe a vegetable for a side. I was first introduced to Cowboy Chicken up in Frisco....and for the life of me, I can't understand why we don't have this deliciousness in San Antonio!!! But...El Valle to the rescue! I love this place so much! Their chicken is to die for (definitely different than the rotisserie at HEB), their sides taste homemade and fresh, and they have a rotation of seasonal teas that I love. Can't get enough! Unfortunately I live in Austin, so I only get my cowboy chicken fix in the valley and up in Dallas. Wish they would open one near me, I would be there all the time! My husband on the other hand is not a fan. He only eats dark meat and feels like the portions are very small, even when he gets 1/2 a chicken. Came back to this place after almost a year and the manager remembered us!! The rotisserie chicken is delicious!! I usually get the quarter chicken plate with 2 sides, but I must say the chicken sandwich is good as well. In reality it doesn't matter which plate you decide to get, the chicken won't be dry, it's always juicy! I went here for the first time ever a few days ago. This restaurant is really spacious. There's booths, tables, and a counter by the window to sit at. There's two big TVs up on the walls (me and my date were enjoying women's tennis). The employees are friendly. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich with macaroni on the side and a drink, which is an empty cup you fill up at a soda fountain. I got watermelon sweet tea cuz, c'mon, WATERMELON. I nearly started crying tears of joy when the chicken salad arrived to my table. It was so perfect looking. Beautiful. I eat chicken salad often and it's not exactly a handsome looking dish like sushi or flan but somehow Cowboy Chicken made theirs look so aesthetically pleasing I was almost scared of ruining it. Of course I took a picture. The chicken salad was between two slices of a nice nutty bread (that had sunflower seeds in it, which made for a good texture combination with the salad) and it didn't fall out and plop-slop on my plate. It stayed intact. The meat was so tender and flavorful (they make it out of their rotisserie chicken). It was a great sandwich that left me stuffed. If you ever go here you really need to try their macaroni. It has this nice layer of crisp baked cheese on the edges which is super tasty. They also have yummy natural cut fries. Cowboy Chicken has a great atmosphere and affordable, tasty food. I missed the lunch special by an hour but I still think I got great food for a good price. I will definitely be returning. read more

This place is fantastic! I highly recommend this restaurant if you love chicken, especially fire grilled chicken. The chicken is just delicious. In addition, their sides are yummy! From their macaroni, to their smashed potato, I am just in love with this place. You also have to try their deserts, they are the bomb digits! Pricing is fair! You're missing out if you haven't eaten here! Seriously. I eat here at least once a week. Their chicken is always so tender, juicy, FLAVORFUL, and falls right off the bone. My favorite sides are the creamed spinach and mac & cheese. My go-to order is always the half chicken, but the enchiladas come in a very close second as my favorite thing on the menu. They are ah-may-zing. You can't really go wrong with anything you order here. Everything is delicious.
