Chicken and Key West Chicken & Shrimp
    Marisol M.

I ordered the Key West Chicken, the chicken was so juicy and soft, the mashed potatoes tasted fresh and my steamed broccoli was perfect. Our server (Kassy) was amazing, a sweetheart. We got sat by the bar and they had the game on and music, all around great experience.

Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen has a great location in the Palms Crossing Shopping Mall on the north side of Expressway 83 (I-2) in McAllen by the intersection of the expressway and Ware Road. It sits facing the expressway in between Saltgrass and PF Chang's. There is easy access off the highway, and plenty of parking, including spaces for the handicapped and for online pick-up orders. The building is well maintained and landscaped, pleasing to the eyes. I was greeted as I entered and asked what size table I would need, and shown to a booth. There was no wait at 12:15 PM on a Friday. The décor is nice with some sparse faux greenery, brickwork arches separating the multiple dining areas. I particularly like the unusual palm leaf fans in the central dining room. The atmosphere is casual but nice. It can get a bit loud in peak hours. Cheddar's is known for "country, home-style" cooking. From scratch. I have been to Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen a few times before, and each time I ordered the New Orlean's Pasta and loved it. The pasta has a great flavor with shrimp, chicken, smoked sausage, peppers, onions and penne pasta in a spicy homemade Cajun alfredo sauce and served with garlic bread. This time, I was meeting some friends for lunch and decided I would try something else, and ordered the Chicken Fried Steak which comes with two sides, gravy, and Texas toast... To be honest, I was it was OK, but not exceptional; I've had much better. The servings were not very generous for the price, the green beans were flavorless and not evenly cooked. My friends seemed happy with their choices of a burger (which looked great) and some chicken wraps. The server did very well, and kept our drinks full. He was bilingual and did an excellent job. Overall, I'm glad I went, but next time will order what I know I will enjoy. If I am hankering chicken fried steak, I'll go to the competition across the highway with the rockers in front.

The weight was short if you sit at the bar, you don't have to wait at all. The food was excellent.. The service was so friendly and she refilled our drinks without us even asking. The complementary croissants were outstanding. I loved my salad. The restaurant was clean and not too loud definitely worth going to.

    Country Fried Steak

Waited under 15 minutes for a table for 2 during Saturday lunch time! Cheese fries were BOMB, but the croissants & our drinks took a while to be brought. Got the country fried steak & hated it... absolutely no flavor on the meat or breading. First time ordering the country fried steak and was extremely disappointed. The chicken pasta salad was good but definitely ask for more dressing or it can be a bit dry.

Good restaurant! The food is so good, by the price you pay. Service is ok. Family ambience. You need to have patience, frequently 30-60 min waiting during weekends

    Grilled Chicken Alfredo

The food was scrum-dilly-umptious. This location has never missed in any of my visits. The food came out super quick and our waiter, Romeo, was incredibly nice, funny, and on top of shit. The buffalo chicken wraps were good as always, the croissants were baked to perfection, and the chicken Alfredo... was just alright I guess. The prices are also extremely reasonable especially with the portions you get. Would highly recommend this location. Highs: food, service, Romeo Lows: none that I can think of (maybe don't get the Alfredo if you have high standards for pasta) 4.1/5

    Cheddar's painkiller
    Candy T.

I got what I expected. Tried the chicken tenders & shrimp plate and cheddar's pain killer (cocktail) while I was there. The cocktail was quite good, tasted similar to piña colada. As for the chicken tenders & shrimp plate, the chicken tenders' batter, I felt like it either wasn't fried enough or it was left out after deep frying given that the batter part was a little chewy/rough instead of crispy. Otherwise the flavors of the chicken tenders and shrimps were good.

    New Orleans Pasta 3/5

It's been awhile since I've been to cheddars...and only thing I go for are thier chicken tenders and ribs...and boy has it changed....tenders are considerably a lot smaller, not as juicy. Ribs were ok....the New Orleans pasta was a bit salty. The Tilapia and shrimp entree was good. Service was attentive and overall it was good.

Croissants with melted honey butter ... need I say more? Dove in so forgot to take a pic. I ordered the New Orleans pasta and it was very good.

    Bug on salad

Would leave 0 stars but Yelp will not permit. First, I ordered a Caesar pasta salad and the wrong one came out. The waitress assured me it was the right one but I've dined at Cheddars enough times to know what the Caesar pasta salad looks like. Secondly, when the correct pasta came out, a few bites in there was a bug in it. And finally, when the manager came around to discuss the bug issues, only an apology was offered. No further follow up attempts were made. Once payment was made, even our water cup had been charged. Needless to say, when dining here, keep an eye out for bugs in your meals.

I have been to McAllen TX ... and have even eaten there (2 of 2)…read more I saw that many reviewers are awarding Cowboy Chicken 5 stars. I was going to go with 4 stars, but then thought about it ... they did everything right. I happened to be in this general area, while visiting the famous main branch of the McAllen Public Library, which holds the record for being the largest library on one level in either the U.S., North America, or the world. Dinnertime was approaching and a barbecue place sounded just like what I needed. Cowboy Chicken is in a strip mall close enough to the library. Parking is easy and, once inside, you go through a short line to order what you want to eat, with some people eating in and others taking out. I do like to eat this regional barbeque food on occasion, and it's something I do at least once every time I'm in the Houston metro area. I always go for the 2 item combination platter. However, in the Houston area, I don't seem to land on places that offer both brisket and boneless chicken. So, in Houston, I get brisket and turkey ... and I'm still a happy camper. At this Cowboy Chicken, I asked if I could get chicken as one of the 2 meats and if it could be (a) boneless piece(s). The young lady helping me said that I could and was very helpful. I took my tray to the simple but airy eating area and started to dig in. Everything, including the sides, was delicious. The chicken and the brisket were very much to my liking. I'm not being a big baby by always asking for boneless stuff, but who wants to mess with bones and scales when eating outside of their home or at a backyard event? I wanted to add that the portion size was satisfying and that the pricing was appropriate. This "main" Cowboy Chicken has a lot of good things going for it - the food, the service, the portions, the value, and, above all, what I perceived to be a strong focus on the customer. So there you have it. If visiting the impressive main branch of the McAllen Public Library and get hungry, you might stop by Cowboy Chicken for a meal. How does that sound for a field trip?

The place is very busy, but despite that the wait was only 10 minutes at 10:00 am on a Saturday. The hostess and our server were both very friendly. The place advertises that it specializes in home cooked comfort foods so we figured we'd have to see how their biscuits and gravy were. We ordered a 1/2 order and it came with a biscuit split in half and covered with gravy and sausage. The flavor was perfect - it definitely lived up to 'home cooked comfort food'. I ordered an omelette - three cheeses, sausage, bacon and ham with onions, cilantro and jalapeños - which came with refried (black) beans. The omelette was very good - flavorful and fresh. They actually use slices of cheese inside and on top - I've never had an omelette prepared that way but it was very good. When I first tasted the salsa I was not a fan - it was warm and had a different flavor - then I put it on the omelette and - great pairing and great flavor combo. The refried black beans were sadly underwhelming - no real flavor. I know they were homemade but they were missing the flavor that usually comes with refried beans (black or pinto) My wife had the quiche which had onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms and cheese. It was very good. Even the crust was good. She ordered the breakfast potatoes as the side. The flavor of the potatoes was excellent. Half of them were lightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside which were great; the other half were overcooked and became potato chips - good flavor but not a breakfast potato. We will definitely come back to try their lunch food and dessert (we were too full today). They have a good variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner items on the menu so there is something for everyone. We were glad we stopped in.

It felt like a safe, familiar choice for a holiday morning. When we arrived, we were told the wait would be about 30 minutes. To our surprise, we were called back closer to 10 minutes after signing in, which was a very welcome start. That said, once we were called, we ended up waiting a bit longer while our table was cleaned. Unfortunately, it wasn't fully ready when we were seated. There was still trash on the floor, which I nudged aside with my foot until someone eventually came by and picked it up. Our server came over fairly quickly to ask for drink orders, and we were promptly served coffee and water, which we appreciated. After that, things slowed down. It seemed clear the restaurant was short-staffed. Our waiter was visibly running around, and it took quite a while for our food order to be taken even though we were ready. When the food finally arrived, most of the plates were incomplete. I ordered the Country Boy Breakfast with three eggs, sirloin steak tips, a biscuit with gravy, and two breakfast sides. I chose grits and the fried sweet apples. What arrived initially was the eggs, steak tips, and grits. The biscuit and gravy didn't show up until another 15-20 minutes later. The eggs were cooked sunny-side up as requested, but the steak tips were unfortunately very overcooked and, in my opinion, over-seasoned. The grits were honestly pretty bad. On the bright side, the fried sweet apples were amazing and easily the highlight of my meal. Others in our party had similar issues. Some people received eggs but not their pancakes. One person in our group of five, who ordered only French toast and bacon, didn't receive any food at all until the rest of us finally got our missing pancakes and biscuits. We didn't want to start eating until everyone had something, and by the time everything arrived, much of the food was cold. We also asked multiple times for basic accompaniments like jelly for the biscuits and salsa for the eggs and steak tips. These took a long time to arrive and required several reminders. I could sense our waiter's frustration, which I genuinely understand given the circumstances, but we were equally frustrated and disappointed with the service. Overall, the food was mid. The steak was very bad, the grits were disappointing, while the pancakes and biscuits seemed to be solid for everyone else. The eggs were fine, and the apples really stood out in a good way. I'd recommend sticking to the basics here. The prices were reasonable, but the service issues took away significantly from the experience. With better staffing, this location could likely do much better. As it stands, I can't give it more than 3 stars for average food and poor service, and even that feels a bit generous, offered in the spirit of starting the new year with positive vibes.

We ordered a few appetizers and were surprised (and excited) to see that Cheddar's brought back their Homestyle Onion Rings. Unfortunately, that's where things started to go downhill. It took about 15-20 minutes for the appetizer to come out, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. No apology for the delay, and when it finally arrived, it wasn't even hot. The onion rings had more breading than onion and were clearly not the same as the original recipe -- very disappointing. My side Caesar salad took forever as well, and when it arrived, the lettuce wasn't fresh, with several pieces showing brown spots and way too much dressing. I decided to try the Filet Mignon that's currently on the limited-time menu, which is advertised as their "most tender cut." Sadly, there was nothing tender about it. The chicken strips we ordered were also extremely tough and rubbery. Our server disappeared for long stretches, which only added to the frustration. We hadn't been to Cheddar's in a long time because the quality and service had gone downhill -- and this visit confirmed that nothing has changed. Honestly, a sirloin steak at Applebee's would have been more tender than the "filet" I was served. Sadly, we won't be returning anytime Based on our experience yesterday, it feels like Cheddar's may have shifted from a value-driven "scratch kitchen" to more of a mass-market, less-consistent chain under corporate ownership -- which might explain the issues we encountered. Darden should do better as a company and stop buying out good restaurants and turning them into junk.
