It had been a while since my wife and I had gone to the Pappadeaux seafood kitchen in McAllen... last time we went there the food was awesome. The alligator was so tasty the sauce it had was so delicious. The seasoning was just right. The service was still the same. The ambience is still very nice unfortunately the alligator appetizer has changed, no longer with shoestring potatoes... now with a different kind of sauce and sadly very salty... the baked oysters which we hadn't had in a while were also very salty..... the main dish, Mississippi catfish Opelousas looked AWESOME as it had before...but the taste has changed..now it is salty..too salty. In Cajun food, you commit a sin when you change the recipe.....sadly this might have something to with the exodus of the good chefs that were at this restaurant before - thanks to the ORANGE A-hole in the White House... Let me start by saying that we come to Pappadeaux every time we visit TX to visit family for birthday dinner. We come from CA. I really like this restaurant and have left positive review about it. Restaurant was not busy and the ambiance is always really nice. Party of 7. I let the hostess know right off the bat that we were celebrating 2 birthdays. She said she would let our server know. We ordered our usual drinks and apps. They were good. This was my son's first visit he orders the filet mignon. He took a bite and said it tasted funny. I wasn't going to complain.. asked for a box and take it to go but when I looked at it the filet had an odd color..yeah nope. I let the waitress know he didn't like it. She promptly took it away. We finished dinner, we were all pretty full so my brother and sister in law (both the birthday guests) ordered dessert to go. Our table was cleared. I thought for sure they'd come and sing happy birthday. ... nope the waitress drops the check and I take a look.. She charged for the filet mignon that my son barely touched. It's customary to comp food that the client didn't like or eat. I went to the hostess and told her we didn't get the birthday candle or anything. She told me she had let the server know. I asked for a manager, she was very professional and apologetic. Sorry I didn't your name. She removed the filet mignon and comped the birthday desserts too. I wasn't expecting the latter but was very appreciative. The server came back to the table and said "sorry no one told me y"all were celebrating birthdays" okay but the hostess just told me she let her know. I promptly paid my check and tipped the server 20%. My party was leaving and I rushed to use the restroom (since we drove 2 hrs to get here) I saw and overheard the server talking about my party to a coworker and got stares walking out. Very unprofessionaL. FYI I'm a server ... over 20 years. The server never introduced herself by name ...was kinda rude... idk just didn't get a good vibe from her throughout our dinner. Like she was bothered or something... we all have bad days. The manager was super nice and professional... thank you so much for making it right. Pappadeaux failed this time around... Entrees: I ordered the shrimp brochette which consisted of char-grilled bacon-wrapped shrimp filled with Monterey Jack cheese & a jalapeño, with red beans & rice. My husband ordered the seared Atlantic salmon and jumbo shrimp with rice. Dessert: We received a complimentary dessert since it was our first time dinning there. I choose the cheesecake. Came here on a past visit to Mcallen with a few of my friends while I was there on a business trip. They happened to order the crab cakes which I thought was just okay. My friend order a pasta dish that had blue crab. The pasta dish was littered with crab shells which made the dish hard to eat or inedible. She powered on like a trooper and finished the dish without saying a word good thing it wasn't the dish I ordered. Sad part about all this since a good amount of time has passed and the meal not being memorable I don't even recall what I had. The dish was neither spectacular nor was it terrible which is why they received a 3 star rating. The service was quite attentive as when the drink were close to being empty they would right away come from no where and bring a refill. Whenever I come this way to see my family, this is where I go for the serious meals. They have some of the best rib eyes I've ever had in my life. Perfectly aged and marbled. Every time I've been here I go past the lobster tank by the hostess area. They have some of the biggest lobsters I've ever seen! These dudes are on steroids! So I figured, since it was a special occasion I'd get one of them babies. I went with a 4 pounder. It was quite a workout eating that monster. My fault, I don't like my lobster "neat", I like to crack it myself. Needless to say, I didn't need any sides but I still had a side of asparagus and Mac and cheese. Lobster not over cooked, it was sweet and tender. Kaitlin our waitress was spectacular, she kept the Stella's flowing and anything we needed she took care of. I ordered the shrimp po boy lunch special and my tia got the salmon with the spaghetti squash lunch special. I should have got what she ordered because hers was tasty! The po boy is huge portions. It's literally the bread they serve you at the table before the meal and then a ton of fried shrimp in it! I ordered broccoli as my side and my grandma for green beans. And two small plates of butter one for each of us. After the appetizer, we received Caesar salad. No anchovies were offered nor asked for, and none were in the salad. Upon completion of our salad and the removal of our used plates another person appeared and refilled her water glasses. Soon, our main server returned with another server to present us with our dinner choices. my companion had grouper with lump crab served with sautéed and caramelized carrots (still slightly al dente). I was served a 16 ounce rib steak will help bone for an up. Charge a live 1 pound main lobster. There was so much food that both of us requested and received To Go boxes. Overall, the service was wonderful. The drink was amazing the food excellent. Although, pricey, I felt we had received a superb dining experience. Which was reflected in my tip. I went for a birthday dinner there at a table for seven. It was my birthday and I chose this restaurant because of its stellar reputation and the history of good experiences I've had there in the past. This time was an outstanding disappointment. First, the drink service was late. When my drink arrived the ice had already melted for the most part. Second, getting refills of drinks seemed like an impossibility. I had to flag down the waitress (it seemed like she moved in slow motion), ask for a new drink and wait quite a while before it came. The food was terrible. I ordered one of the most expensive things on the menu (lobster tail), and the plate was cold when it was served. So was the accompanying broccoli and baked potato. The atmosphere was terrible. The staff seated a howling baby at the next table. The baby was howling when it arrived and never shut up. All in all, I expected the service to be much better, the food to be much hotter and my birthday to be an unqualified success. What I experienced was a complete disappointment! I will investigate a different place next year. In the meantime, I'll skip Pappadeaux's for meals in the future. read more
