Thought the food was delicious!!! Had a huge mixed platter of items, fish, shrimp, fries, hush puppies, beans. Food was hand prepared and served with tons of love . however, ambience and presentation has got to be improved. The floor design has to much space and tables and seating areas are hidden. Food looked like it was just plopped on a platter again, food was delicious though, will return for the food, and world class server we received read more

I got a chicken strip and fish combo plate. The fish looked like it was gonna be absolutely wonderful because of the batter. Unfortunately, it was tasteless and the chicken strips were well not worth talking about. I went there because somebody onYep, recommended their chicken strips. read more

Good Service, Good Food, no lines, no waiting. We went for lunch. I had fish and shrimp with Cole slaw. There is no ambience per se. Very open rooms, very bright, but clean. Pleasant atmosphere. Our second time there and I'd go back in a minute. read more

First time eating at Southern Fried, but it will not be the last. The best catfish i ever ate. The wait service was great. It was our wedding Anniversary and could not ask for a better restaurant. The restaurant and bathroom were the cleanest. The cook runs a tight ship, please don't change. read more

One of my favorite places to eat. The fish and shrimp are always delicious and the portions are generous.

Bonnie is an excellent cook. I never liked catfish until I ate at Southern Fried. Combine the food, ambiance, And the wait staff It is a winning combination. Southern Fried is a must-try experience. read more

Southern Fried is a small, quaint restaurant, housed in a large, old, white house in the heart of mission, TX. The house has numerous old artifacts that you'd have found in any mid-20th century farm house. The tables are covered with red and white checkered plastic table cloths, definitely nothing fancy here. But the food is OUTSTANDING!!! They are know in the area as having the BEST fried chicken. However, I was surprised on our first visit that their fried chicken was, in reality, fried chicken tenders. Which, by the way, they do exceedingly well. Always tender and juicy with a great seasoned coating. They also do a wonderful job of frying and seasoning their catfish too. Sometimes catfish can taste sorta muddy but not here. Nice and crunchy with an appropriate amount of cornmeal based breading to fish. Their shrimp is tasty but several times I've had it, it seems a bit over cooked. They have a number of sides including coleslaw, green beans, baked beans, fries, etc. I always seem to get a tossed green salad which is simply chopped romain lettuce and halved grape tomatoes. But we've tried other sides and they are decent too. One side they do NOT serve is good old fashioned hush puppies! I find that very strange. Service is always nice and friendly and on our last visit where we were meeting new friends, the6 didn't seem to mind that we sat at the table a couple hours visiting. Our waitress obliged by being unobtrusive, continually filling our beverages until we finally left, ten minutes before closing time. We love this little restaurant and will keep returning periodically, fried food and all! read more

I am just amazed at how absolutely delicious Southern Fried is, I have never tried their food before but after providing the fish for my sons party they have gained a new costumer!! We ordered 25 pieces of filet at I think a very reasonable price, our guest loved it so much we only have two pieces left!!! Extremely flavorful, beautiful crispy, and the owner provided a generous amount of toppings and other pairings for the fish. I HIGHLY recommend for your Catering's needs and just in general! Not only is the food amazing but the owner was extremely helpful and sweet, after we planned out my order I left feeling so so happy and excited to experience their cooking! I'm one happy mama! read more

I used to go to Southern Fried when I lived closer, so I have not been there in a while. The food is as good as it ever was, and it has always been great! But I was shocked to see what they have done with their prices!! * $20 for 2 pieces of fish and 6 shrimp? * $21.75 for 2 fish, 4 shrimp, and 3 chicken tenders!! This was always a great place to take the family, but now it is a little too pricey. read more

Simply good fresh food and friendly service. I frequently visit this establishment and will continue to do so.

We went as part of a group of 11, and we all had a wonderful experience. the food was hot and delicious, the service was wonderful, and the table was set up so all of us could converse with everyone else. For some of the group, it was their first visit but all declared it won't be their last. read more

We have tried to eat there 2 Fridays in a row. First one they were closed with a note on the gate. I think it was graduation day. So we tried so call before we went the second Friday their phone went straight to voicemail which was full. So we decided to go anyway the gate was open but the business door was locked. This was about 2pm in the afternoon. It is a thirty minute drive for us. Food is great when they are open. read more

Best fish and shrimp in the valley. Fresh tasty. Fast service. I order the fish and shrimp plate with homemade coleslaw. The best. Ask for "mom". read more

Took my sister, nephew and nieces to Southern Fried. The fish, chicken strips and shrimp were just as god as last time. The coleslaw was off! Will I come back a third time? I think the reason is that it was a full house, two orders were for people picking up to go, and two groups and my group arrived at the same time. Southern Fried is a small restaurant, and I don't think that they have ironed out all the kinks. So will I return? You bet your sweet patootie! :o) Hope to see you there! What a cute place! We collectively agreed that we felt like we'd been transported to a little cafe on the coast! The menu was small, but the food was seasoned and cooked just right and the prices were reasonable. Here's the lowdown on what we tried on this trip: Fried shrimp: plump shrimp with a seasoned cornmeal breading. Crunchy and yummy. Honey BBQ wings: great flavor! Coleslaw: finely chopped with a light dressing. I liked that it wasn't overly dressed. Seasoned green beans a.k.a. the side of the day. Simple, but flavorful. Can't wait to return! Check it out! read more

So I took my wife and 1 yr old son for lunch and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We understand that it might be a longer wait due to the food being cooked once ordered. We had an order of buffalo wings, the Dad's plate (fillets, jumbo shrimp, and tenders) and fries w/ beans as sides. So our son started getting fussy due to being hungry so this lady (I'm assuming the owner) brought him a tender so he could eat while we wait on our food. The place was a winner already! The wings were delicious! Nice and crispy...good amount of meat on the bone...and I loved the buffalo sauce. Right amount of tang and heat. Main course was also excellent. The homemade tartar sauce was creamy and tangy...the shrimp were excellent...and the fillets were the right amount of crisp on the outside while still being soft on the inside. Our son loved the tenders and ate 2 on his own. My wife said she lived the fillets. The fries were also very good...the right amount of seasoning on it. Only thing slightly lacking were the beans. I found them good ..my wife is more used to charro beans (lol) so she would've preferred them a little more spicy. I found them to be just right. Food was so good we ordered more plates to go for our dinner! Definitely going back. read more

I recommend Southern Fried to anyone craving really authentic comfort food. Truly, great tasting food. The tenders are full of flavor, moist and perfectly crispy! The French fries are deliciously fried and seasoned to perfection. The fillet and shrimp were very well bartered and had that awesome crunch you crave in fried seafood. Even the tartar and cocktail sauce were very delicious, and I am not a fan of either normally but really liked theirs. I ordered the baby daddy basket and my wife ordered the tender basket. We just moved to the area recently and were both very impressed and found a new spot for comfort food! The staff is very friendly and helpful, and they brought our food out to our car which I really appreciated. Great tasting food and great people! read more

Need to post a sign on the door stating your hours when you changed them. Not all people look at Facebook. Other wise food is alway good.

The reviews DON'T LIE! . it's very rare you can find a place where EVERYTHING IS GOOD! . "Grandmas plate" was off the chain! The kids baskets was AMAZING!!! . . Even the sweet tea was on point! I'm not sure what took me so long to try this place out and to top it all off the pricing is very inexpensive! . The salad was the FRESHEST I've had in FOREVER! The fish was fried to perfection This is a MUST TRY!!! read more

Service and food are always great. Dining room is decorated beautifully, although seating could be a little more comfortable.

I got take out 2 wks ago. They were busy and had a wait. I had called in my order and was told 30 minutes. When I got there in 30 min, I waited an additional 20 min for my food. Otherwise, everything was delicious and I'll be eating here again for sure. read more

OMGoodness, YUM!!! I'm not one for fried foods but, I've gotta say this is THE BEST! Light & perfectly seasoned batter (crispy on the outside, moist inside) & not at all greasy/oily! The fried fish is the real star... so flaky & delicious! Loved that they had my favorite habanero hot sauces on hand...but, too be honest I didn't even need 'em! Just a small twist of their juicy lemons did just fine! The sides are ok but, wish they had a few more options. The fries are the best option if they are hot & fresh (they weren't on my 2nd visit). The food takes a little time as it's made to order which is great unless you're on a time crunch. Nontheless, I love their simple/straight forward menu & very reasonable prices! And to top it off, the owner is super friendly & sweet! This is definitely McAllen's new hidden gem!#SupportLocal #SupportSmallBiz read more

Great value for your dollar here at Southern Fried! I got the Buddy meal with fries and green beans. I liked the great beans a lot more than the fries but the fries were still tasty. I just wish they weren't so flimsy. The Buddy meal had a huge fish fillet and (4) jumbo shrimp. My waitress was so on top of her game too so I never lacked a thing. The modest cost of this meal earns a 5-star in my book. read more

Great small hole in the wall! It's got a small menu (catfish and shrimp basically) but it's probably our favorite place in the valley that's seafood because the island is 1.5hr away from us. Casual, service is friendly. Location is a bit odd but I guess the best places are like that. Will be back and send friends! read more

Southern Fried is a small local tucked behind a car lot serving some of the best fried fish, chicken and shrimp in town. The owner is very nice, answers your every question with a smile. Dining area is nice and confy, the decor is a bit off for a dining area, looks more like my uncles living room but that's just being picky. I ordered the "Dad's Plate", which consisted of several fried shrimp, chicken and fish with two sides. They have a few choices for your sides, I chose fries and coleslaw. Everything came out in a timely manner. I loved the shrimp! Everything was delicious though, fish was nice and soft inside and nice and crunchy on the outside. Chicken strips were cooked perfectly, liked the thinness of it, big fan. The batter used is out of this world, I think that's what makes the food taste great. A must try. Will definitely be bringing the family here soon, I'm sure they'll enjoy it as much as I did. read more

We read the reviews for this restaurant on Yelp and decided to eat dinner there. The restaurant is located in an interesting location, but we had no difficulties finding it. Parking might be a challenge if this restaurant and others in the area have a lot of patrons. I ordered the fish and shrimp basket with a side of beans. One side was included with the basket. My husband ordered the 10-piece chicken wing dinner with honey BBQ sauce and french fries. Both of us really enjoyed our meals and will come back. We will probably order other selections from the menu. read more

This is a quaint hole-in-the-wall spot. The customer service is phenomenal. The food is cooked to order, so don't be surprised if you have to wait a few minutes for your food. The shrimp are cooked to a golden crisp with perfect seasoning. The fish is also cooked to a perfect golden crisp on the outside with a nice juicy inside. The sweet tea tastes freshly brewed and the tartar sauce tastes homemade. If you're looking for a spot to eat at for soup good without breaking the bank, go here. This hole in the wall deserves more attention. I ordered the fish and tenders with a side of fries and coleslaw.
