My wife and I ate here with my brother-in-law and his family. We were seated in a booth in the bar area after a very long wait. The first thing (and the biggest issue that I have) is that this Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen needs to manage their wait times by allowing people to join the list by phone. If someone calls and doesn't show up, it is easy enough to give away their table after a minute or two. I suspect they do this as a marketing technique to get people to order a beverage from the bar and increase revenue. If Cheddar's would do this, they would have a lot more happy customers; face it, waiting is boring and not much fun when you are hungry! The server who came to our table got into a heated debate about an item my sister-in-law thought they offered on the menu. As someone who has been in a customer-facing job all my life, I can tell you that you don't do raise your voice with a customer; you find out the facts and calmly explain that the item they are thinking of isn't offered and even if she raises her voice, you stay calm. My sister-in-law left very upset. I ordered their Chicken Fried Steak. The food arrived about 20 minutes after we ordered, which would be about right for the level of business in the store. The temperatures of the food were acceptable with steak and mashed potatoes being between warm and hot with the green beans being hot. The Texas Toast was a little on the cool side. The taste of the food was acceptable for the price paid. To sum up the reason for my score: Their score would have been 4 stars, but I took one off for not offering phone ahead seating and another for the argumentative waitstaff. read more

We went on a Saturday just as the lunch crowd was starting to pile in (so yay! No waiting for us). They don't take reservations and the place can get full at times. Just keep that in mind especially if you're planning to go with a group. The place had a casual atmosphere and looked very clean. Our server, Anthony, was really friendly and attentive. Our drinks and food were brought to us promptly. I enjoyed my meal of Dijon Chicken and Mushrooms. The chicken portion was huge and it was moist and tender. Kudos to the chef for cooking it perfectly. The sauce was a bit tangy and very tasty. I even used some of my friend's fries to mop up my remaining sauce. My friend ordered the Top Sirloin Steak & Shrimp. Unfortunately, hers was a bit disappointing as the steak was minuscule. I don't think that was even 6 oz. We'll probably stay away from the steaks the next time we visit Cheddar's. Do try their croissants. They're sweet and buttery and warm -- delicious and addictive! We ordered a plate of it as our appetizer. I'll definitely come back. Their prices are very reasonable and a lot more affordable than the other restaurants surrounding the McAllen Convention Center. Take some more responsibility waiters. They need to ask if we are done with our food on the table, not just take our food away. First time trying Cheddars and I loved everything! I especially love that the lunch menu is available all day. I had the Monte Cristo and Blackened Shrimp Alfredo. I was nervous to try new stuff, but the MC was to die for!! Super delicious and melt in my mouth. The alfredo has broccoli and carrots in it, which was very surprising and loved. Husband had chicken Caesar salad and buffalo wrap, both super delicious too! I had their strawberry lemonade and it is now my favorite drink ever!!! Plus free refills. The strawberries in it tasted fresh. Our waiter, Michael, was one of the best waiters we have had! He was super attentive, polite, and continuously made sure we were happy with everything. This place really deserves 3 stars. According to Yelp, 3 stars in A-OK and Cheddars is A-OK with me. This review may get lengthy, but hopefully, useful. I came here with my fiance for the first time, I have never tried a Cheddars before. There were some pros and cons throughout the meal. First, we ordered drinks. I got the Maui Margarita. It was in a HUGE glass and cost only about $5 (pro). However, I think they omit mixing in the liquor. They do give you a shot glass of some delicious cacti liquor to pour in yourself, but that's only one little shot in that huge glass of mixers (con). Next time I will definitely get the Pain Killer. The drink was very yummy though. Very tropical. Next was the appetizer. We got the Texas Fries. The fries were good,but I have a feeling they may have been frozen fries and not fresh (con). Not really a big deal though, lots of places serve fries like that, at least these were covered in cheese and bacon (pro). I ordered the chicken fried steak with corn and a caesar salad. My caesar salad came first and it was actually very tasty (pro) but it was very over dressed which made the bottom pieces of lettuce pretty inedible (con), but I did eat over 90% of it so it wasn't wasted. The salad came with a croissant and oh my god was it freaking delicious (big pro)! The croissant was soft, light and slightly flaky. I could've eaten a whole plate of them. It came with a sweet butter poured on it. Cheddars should open a small bakery section (kinda like Cheesecake Factory) that sells just their croissants with different fillings. Even though I was already full from the Texas fries and the salad, I was still going to have a few bites of my chicken fried steak and get a to-go box. The chicken fried steak was actually very good. It wasn't bland, tough or chewy. The breading stays on pretty well too (pro). The corn was your average corn, but a little sweeter. The "Texas toast" that came with it was nothing of the sort. It was just a piece of store bought white bread thrown in a toaster (con). Texas toast should be a thick piece of perfectly toasted flavorful bread. What I got was a sad excuse for Texas Toast. Again not a big deal. I didn't go there for the bread. Now for the service. The service was at a moderate pace. Not really the quickest service. Our food took a while to come out. Our server was very very nice though. He was very helpful. Overall, I will surely be returning to Cheddars. The pros outweighed the cons, and some of the cons may just be an isolated incident. I went to this spot after a few people were praising it so highly. It was a FAB [fair at best] experience. The bar area has 3 taps all were of the light variety, the bartender was a total ass to boot. When my friend finally arrived, we were seated in the main dining area the decorations are really nice. The food on the other hand just wasn't so great. The "special" croissants that everyone was raving about were cold, and not flakey. My chicken friend steak was NOT fork-tender, my loaded baked potato had no sour cream, and one-single strand of cheese, even the corn was just way too salty. Any Chili's kicks this place in the pants... The only good thing is that the spot is pretty cheap, we both dined for $22. Sadly that is NOT enough to make me want to come back. read more

EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT! . . . Went for lunch today to celebrate my birthday. Our server, Rick, was professional, polite, quick, and with a genuine goal to please! The food was amazing -- right temperature, beautifully plated, and delicious. Add the fact that the value of my friend and I meal, that included appetizers, did not break the bank. I even went as far as to talk to the manager and inform him on our wonderful dining experience. I've been here many times, with both friends and family. It's a nice but casual place. It can get pretty crowded, and there's been a 15-25min wait every time. Cheddars is fast. Very fast, my food usually arrives before i finish my salad. The food here is decent and it's very cheap to eat here. Very affordable food with fast service is hard to beat. My wife and I usually come here when we want to sit down and it but are in somewhat of a hurry. The wait to get seated usually isn't long even on peak hours . I usually order the key west chicken and shrimp which is very tasty. Grilled chicken with a tangy sauce served over rice and shrimp. I tried making a reservation but they said I couldnt. ok I called an hr before they told me I had to be there 30 mins before. I got there 45 mins before, and we still waited over 2 hrs. On my last visit I divided to go with the chicken fried steak with mash potatoes against the advise from a couple of my friends. Well my friends were right the chicken fried steak batter didn't stay together was hard and crumbly and the meat was not tender. To top it off the mash potatoes were overly salty and served cold. The chicken fried steak was a very large plate with a side of perfectly seasoned mashed potatoes and green beans. Everything tasted great! The only comment I have is the breading was a bit thick. Overall The only bad thing about this restaurant is that most of the time there is a wait, but I guess it's good and bad: good meaning that a lot of people enjoy coming here, bad for the wait. On the flip side, the portion size is more than enough for a grown man to fill up. I'd say some prices are a bargain. I have been going to cheddar's for family get-togethers for a long time now and it's a great place for that! The music is great in the background and the service is excellent as well. This last time, my cousin got her plate already cold. She sent it back and the manager came back with her new plate and didn't leave until he knew she was satisfied which I feel is very impressive judging the fact that most other places would give back the plate and leave right there. He was so polite and genuinely cared about our enjoying our time and food. He even gave her the appetizer part of her meal so that she could eat with us while she waited for her food to come back. Love this place, ALSO, I recommend that vegetarians and vegans order the veggie plate. Vegans: order the sweet potato side without the caramel butter thing and ask for no butter on the corn if you order those two. Butter may be in other veggie sides so just ask. I have never been so disappointed. When I saw a Cheddar's opening in Mcallen I was overly stoked since I have great memories of the one in Phoenix. Here's my story... We had a party of eight people and they shoved us into a booth made for 6 people. We ordered drinks and the waitress came back about 20 minutes later to tell me they couldn't make frozen margaritas but could make it on the rocks, so I agreed. Another 20 minutes goes by and they can't make my drink. Hmm.. so I ordered another drink, another 20 minutes, they didn't have it, I ended up getting a coke. After that hour the waitress finally took our order. As everyone's food came out, I was notified they were out of my desired entree! Are you kidding me? I shared my friend's entree instead of trying to order something else. Now to split the check...... it must have taken her another 30 minutes just trying to split the check. A manager never came and apologized, they tried to add FOUR mojitos to the bill, the waitress had absolutely no idea how to wait on a table, and no one tried to help.
