Pretty bad first visit. Don't get me wrong, we'll probably be back. But just for the music, beer, and location. We'll eat at Whataburger first.
The misgivings started almost immediately when I was handed a menu with (what I hope was...) mayonnaise smeared all over it. Quick trip to the bathroom and I was a little less grossed out.
One member of our party order a sweet tea. I could tell from the expression on her face, something was very wrong. She then tried an unsweetened tea, and finally settled for a diet Coke. Everyone tried the tea and agreed it had a strong metallic taste, like bad well water. Maybe the new equipment is leaching a bit...?
Around this time, I noticed that I was sitting in the dark with nothing to look at except a Barry White poster. There was no light above our table, so we had to read the menu using flashlight apps on our phones. It was also extremely cold, so we spent the entire meal with heavy coats on. Why am I looking at Barry White? And why is he looking at me? Oh well, I digress...
Fries... they were greasy, limp, and basically horrible in every way. One translucent fry was so greasy, I actually held it up to show my wife that you could see through it. Oh well, I'll rescue them with ketchup... Nope. Ketchup was empty. Took 5 minutes to catch our waitress and get a fresh bottle. By then, the fries were cold and hopelessly repulsive. The fries were eerily reminiscent of Denton County Independent. Could there be a connection? Same oil? Probably just my imagination.
Burgers... served on a 16X12" metal cookie sheet. Nice. No veg to be found on any of the offerings. They weren't bad, a little small and overcooked, but certainly not worth the $6.50 price tag. No veg? Really? Basically folks, a burger and a beer at this place will set you back $13, excluding tax and tip. The veg-less burgers are $6.50. Greasy fries are $2.50 extra. And beer is $4.00. Trust me... eat at Whataburger and come later for the music, the view, and beer.
Speaking of music... why is the piped-in music different from what's on the TVs? Why show great music videos of SRV, while playing some bad pop country song? Weird.
Service... our waitress was trying really hard. She gets an A+ for effort. But she committed a couple unforgivable sins of the restaurant business: (1) served beer #2 and grabbed beer #1 before it was empty; and (2) gave us our bill before asking about dessert (we wanted to try the pecan pie). Oh well, maybe next time. Then we noticed that the bill had only one copy (customer copy), no merchant copy. So, after 5 unsuccessful minutes attempting to get the attention of our waitress, we left without a receipt. Nearly $60 for 3 people... totally not worth it. Huge disappointment.
Atmosphere... vibrant, minimalist, cool, very Texan (except for the creepy Barry White thing...). Absolutely great location and the rooftop bar will quickly become "the place" to take out-of-towners. No doubt, LSA will thrive despite the greasy fries, overcooked and over-priced burgers, and "sticky" menus.
I hope this wasn't too negative. As a long-time Dentonite, I really want this place to survive and do well. It has tons of potential. Hopefully, they will correct some of the misgivings and start paying more attention to basic operational details. Bottom line, if you want a great burger and fries, there are at least a dozen better options in Denton. read more
