I was waffling between a 3 and 4 star review but there are a few reasons I finally settled on a 3. I've been to LowBrau a handful of times and I think I just prefer bars with more things to do. I won't deny its a stellar place for groups and has a great outdoor seating area but its just not my cup of tea. I think my favorite part of LowBrau is their location. They are right on the corner of J street and surrounded by other fun bars and night clubs. Also like I mentioned their outdoor area is a good place to sit and take a breather. They have large outdoor picnic tables and bulbed light decor. So outside is a 5/5. Its the inside that I think could do with a few tweaks. First off, the music is really loud, so its impossible to have a conversation anywhere inside except the bathrooms. Don't get me wrong bathroom convo's can be a real treat but if they just turned the music down just a tad it would be nice. Thats just my opinion though. The other thing is that the music when I've gone is just one beat repeated for a very long time. So if you are someone who likes to head bob then this is the place for you. Not for me...for you;) I think the second reason that I voted LowBrau ok was because of their drinks. I've had several different one's over the times and they've always just been ok. I think either making them taste better or making them stronger would be an improvement. I will say the price is pretty good for some of their drinks though so that is a plus. Another thing they could do is keep their kitchen open later and just have a few classics. With those great picnic tables outside LowBrau could be a great place to swarm to after a long night and enjoy a bite to eat. These are just my personal preferences though, so I'd take my review with a grain of salt because there is absolutely nothing overtly wrong with LowBrau. It is a mostly mid-20s crowd, has drinks, music and places to sit so I'd probably go again. read more

Happy hour all day Tuesday! Came with a group of friends and had a great time. I thought it would be crazy busy but it was pretty calm throughout our time there. Duck fat fries are great. Recommend getting them with the green goddess sauce. Also had the sliders, which were solid as well. Their old fashioned during happy hour was also quite good. Only thing is I wished they used a big ice cube instead of regularly sized ice cubes. Look forward to returning. read more

Always greeted when walking in and served a solid German cold beer (Dunkel is my go to) within seconds. Lynnsie is an awesome bartender and I found out that Tuesday is an all day happy hour for select items although they still have normal happy hour with all the usual suspects of all German beer being $5 for a half liter. Lets start with the Ambiance, this place seems really cool and I could see it gettin hoppin on a thurs/fri/sat night, deco was cool, communal picnice tables on the patio, good music, good vibes all around, dudes workin were chill and seemed to be happy to be there. Idk... anyways your food will come out kinda piece-meal as it is made, heres your bratwursts, a few minutes later heres your pretzel, finally heres your "loaded" duck fat fries. Lets hit the food Food: Bratwursts on a pretzel bun- got mine w carmelized onions and beer cheese, pops got the pickled jalapeno and sauerkrat. Bratwursts were pretty solid 4/5. Bun needed to be warmed or grilled or something, was pretty tough and chewy (and i love pretzel anything) 2/5 on bun. Carmelized onions, yea fine, pickled jalapenos from the jar, fine. Sauerkrat, donno if homemade but 4/5 pretty good. Beircheese, this stuff was great, only complaint was when it came out it had been sitting for so long it had a film on the top of it and was barely warm (thats how long the food took, and they couldnt figure out to do the cheese at the end? Dumb) Taste wise awesome, service of it sub-par, but still taste 5/5. Pretzel- They make sure to salt this baby, had tons of that pretzel salt on top, brushed about half off, had a good exterior with a little chew and fluffy center, and came out hot, beircheese with this as well, I would be delighted if I got something like this at a ballgame or the movies, 4.5/5 (although hard not to give a 5, the amount of salt and having to brush half off I cant give it a 5) "Dirty" duck fries- alright, seriously? You charge like an an extra $4 or 5 and sprinkle some parsley or some sorta green herb on them and call them "dirty", maybe the order just got messed up (they did forget all the sides for our bratwursts), but these were a disappointment to say the least. I dont know see how ANYONE is raving about these, tasted just like any other fry, granted they seemed fresh cut and were well cooked, crispy exterior, nice fluffy inside, as a fry there solid, but duck-fat fries??? No difference, and the "dirty" part, the only thing "dirty" was the extra we got charged. Idk, as "dirty" duck fat fries 0.5/5, seriously disappointed after reading reviews and the bartender hyping them. Came here for some food and drinks on a random Friday around 6PM when we came across LowBrau and I am now obsessed with the place!! I'm not a big beer drinker and the bartender was so nice and gave me some recommendations before I ended up getting one of their sour beers. The main reason why we stopped here was for the hot dogs, and I am so glad we did. They came on a pretzel bun, and I got a Polish Sausage with Sauerkraut and Bier Cheese and it went perfect with the beer. The Dirty Duck Fries were also an incredible side to go with the sausage. This is a dangerous bar where people get roofied and the staff does nothing to help. I was drugged after accepting a drink, and when I told the staff, they refused to help me call a taxi or Uber--even though I was clearly disoriented and my phone was locked out. Instead, they told me to 'get some fresh air off the property,' knowing I was drugged. I was then followed and attacked outside. The bartender was also rude and kept interrupting my conversations, clearly looking for conflict. Any responsible bar would protect its customers. This one didn't. Stay away. read more

The slaw was thick cut cabbage and onion with a great sauce too. The bun was a toasty and the fries are always spectacular. I came here with friends to celebrate new years and 1 star is generous for our experience. One of the security guards was clearly inebriated (literally bragged to us about all the drinks he was being given earlier in the night) and actively picked a fight with our group. He asked our friend to leave, who complied without arguing, and the security guard followed us outside threatening to get the other security guards to jump our friend. We were actively trying to leave and the security continued to escalate. In an attempt to deescalate I told the security guard there was no need to escalate any further and that we were leaving (we were literally outside the bar on the street at that point). The security guard point blank told me "I don't speak to women. I only speak to men." Absolutely unacceptable behavior. We've come here for new years before without incident so I hope Lowbrau can clean up their staff. There's no excuse for having an active misogynist on your payroll. I had brunch at LowBrau for the first time this past Saturday. It's conveniently located right in the middle of the Midtown Farmer's Market, so it's the perfect spot to grab a bite while people watching and then walk around. The patio is open seating (for LowBrau customers only) and everyone seemed respectful of social distancing. You order at the little shack in the street, they give you a number, and then they bring your food to you. The Saturday brunch menu is very limited - basically burrito, sandwich, or burger. They have some drinks too. I had the sausage breakfast burrito and my friend had the bacon breakfast burrito. It's a little pricey at $15, but it is very large and filling - we both only ate half. The flavors were tasty. I loved that it had shredded hash browns. The eggs were fluffy and the sausage was like a kielbasa, not a breakfast sausage, so that was different. The salsa on the side provided a nice kick. Overall, I would return and recommend. I want to try their duck fat fries I hear so much about. Their business practice is to add their tip into the price of each cocktail, but don't tell you that they do that, nor do they break it down on your receipt. I have no idea what the percentage of the tip is. In addition, they lump the tax into the cost of the drink, making it more confusing. The only reason I know that they do this is because I questioned my tab once. The amount of tip should be at the customers prerogative. Beware: Shady Tipping Practices So, I've lived in Sacramento for 12 years and always enjoyed coming here. We came for dinner with a group last night. I ordered for myself, gave a 20% tip, went to sit down and looked at my receipt. What I failed to realize, is they add an automatic 15% gratuity without notifying you before putting a standard looking receipt down, with space for gratuity. It doesn't say "additional gratuity." The automatic gratuity they add isn't shown on the bottom of the receipt, it's in the middle...not listed anywhere clearly, which feels designed to deceive their customers. They have signs at the back of the bar facing the opposite direction that 90% of the customers are looking, notifying people about the auto gratuity, which also feels intentional. The employees who brought the food were fabulous, they were kind and attentive. The food was good. I'm all for tipping 15-20% at restaurants, that should be standard. Getting tricked into tipping 30-35% isn't right. The restaurant is taking advantage of people. read more

Came with friends and a golden retriever hungry and cold on a Saturday Morning to the farmers market, and so happy to see this place welcome us for brunch. It's a chill vibe place with open seating and order at the bar style. Really enjoyed the food here and so happy dogs are allowed indoors. Food came out fresh, warm, and delicious. Service was friendly and quick. No need to tip because gratuity is included. No line here on a Saturday brunch time is definitely the best, bc so many places had 30-50 min wait times. So I'm happy we ended up here. Got a tomato soup with egg breakfast and toast, so delicious and perfectly seasoned. The kale salad was also good and the chicken and waffles and other breakfasts. Pretty quiet at 2pm so we order at the bar from the HH menu and grab a nice booth. Food was better than expected- 3 hot chicken sliders ($9), small duck fries ($4) and a house white wine ($3). You cannot complain about this deal! $20.04 lunch for two including tax, tip, and food leftover!! Service was attentive and venue can accommodate large and small parties, inside and out. Went to this location a few weekends ago to grab drinks and a bite to eat after playing a couple rounds at Top Golf. They were doing outdoor self-seating, and had created a parklet on the street in front of their restaurant with extra seating and an ordering booth. The whole street was pretty much closed off for them and the surrounding eateries. It was a pretty hot day out, so try to find seating in the shade if you can. Food and drinks were decent. Not an extensive menu and nothing super spectacular, but still satisfying for what it was. My only complaint was that I wish staff was a little more organized. I understand outdoor seating on the street is probably a new process to navigate, and with the large Saturday crowd, I'm sure it was difficult to keep control of. But self-seating our large group of 8 was so confusing. We asked one staff member if we could move to seating on the street after initially finding a large table to sit at situated directly outside of their restaurant. But as soon as we moved, other staff members got frustrated with us and told us we had to move again. Apparently the seating we picked wasn't big enough to seat all 8 of us, which of course, we had no idea was the case. So we ended up taking up two different smaller tables and sitting in the hot sun. Obviously, there are some kinks to work out. Totally not the staff's fault. Just didn't appreciate the slightly rude attitude we got when we were asked to move tables. Would I visit again? Sure. Do I think this is the *best* place I've eaten during my short stint in Sacramento? No. But was it a fun place with solid atmosphere, tasty food, and really great staff? Yes. I visited here with a large group of people this past weekend after spending some time at the Farmer's Market that sits outside in front of the building. My friends all ordered a variety of different foods: one of them got a vegan burrito, another got some simple eggs and avocado and potatoes, and another got a brat. After sampling some of the duck fat fries and getting a good look at the sausages, I decided to put an order in for a simple frankfurter (or a glizzy for the uninitiated) with some fries. Now, you order inside at the bar and get a number, which is fine, and they bring the food out to you. Personally I prefer when you have a dedicated server assigned to your table, but I get this method considering LowBrau (I feel) is a watering hole first and a dining establishment second. This might also explain the approach to the food. The pretzel bun was soft and fluffy and salty, but the hot dog was nothing to write home about. It did the job I wanted it to do as it was what I was in the mood for, but it wasn't piping hot and was honestly on par with most experiences I've had at places like Nathan's. I'm unsure if I would order it again if I ever came back. The fries, on the other hand, were EXCEPTIONAL and are a *must order* especially with the beer cheese sauce on the side. I opted for an avocado aioli as my dipping sauce and I honestly abandoned ship and went straight for my friend's beer cheese instead. The fries are hand cut, salty, and crisp on the exterior with a perfectly fluffy interior and the fact that they're fried in duck fat gives them an extra bit of umami. These are addicting: me and my friends ordered two more orders of fries while we drank and hung out even though we were STUFFED. Would I recommend LowBrau? If you're looking for an easy going place to grab some drinks with friends and modest food that doesn't reinvent the wheel, this is a really solid place to do that. read more

Everything felt so lively - I would highly recommend that you visit on a Saturday during the Farmer's Market. This place tends to get super busy, so just accept it and know that the servers are working hard to get you what you need. I would recommend to grab a table on their outdoor patio, perfect spot to people watch, lol. For foods, yeah the sausages are good - but the chicken and Waffles is where it's at. I'm so glad to see this bar/restaurant is able to stay open during COVID. They have a portion of 20th street blocked off. The seatings are spread out with hand sanitizers at various stations. I did see someone cleaning the table after the customers have left. The cocktail menu is limited, because I think they have the base prepared in advance and they just add the ice and liquor. I forgot the name of our cocktail, but it had gin in it. It was decent. We also ordered pretzel with mustard and duck fat fries with aioli and ranch dipping sauce. Make sure to get all the sauces - it makes a difference. I really didn't taste the "duck" fat in the fries. They taste like regular fries to me, but it was crispy. The pretzel is soft and warm with the right amount of salt on top. I enjoyed that more than I expect. I would give it a 3.5 stars. It was very pricey. Two cocktails and two appetizers came out close to $50 including tips. $12 for cocktail, it's hard not to have higher expectations. Nevertheless, I felt safe to grab a drink with a friend. Pretty bad experience. I came in for St. Patrick's day 3/17 with a group of friends. Monday is Motown Monday here and the best Monday spot. We were about 1 hr and then we were asked to pay cover because it was the holiday. No signage was posted of this rule especially after we have already been in the establishment. This was the worst experience out I've had. I ended up paying $60 cover after I told the cover person no and after having security try to kick us out for refusing to pay coverage. Charging for cover after you've been through the establishment is ludicrous. read more

Great patio! Nightlife is hit or miss, but brunch is good! This place has one of the best patios in Midtown! Located in the corner of K & 20th, there is always great people watching here, whether it's the happening nightlife or the Saturday morning farmer's market crowd. I'm not a huge fan of the nightlife scene here. Sometimes it's chill and sometimes it can be pretty douchey. Drinks are expensive, and the food selection is really limited (sausage boards). They recently added a DJ on weekends, which is keeping this place pumping into the late night, but I actually prefer sitting on the patio on a calmer evening. Brunch is great though. Again the menu is a bit limited but the quality is great. We had the breakfast sandwiches (wow!), pretzel and the lox & rye Board (which looked fantastic). Also, the drinks seemed a bit expensive overall, especially compared to the surrounding establishments.
