Finally got the opportunity to visit Loving Hut Express, a food truck by Yaletown-Roundhouse that specializes in vegan burgers and fries. I've been meaning to check them out for a while but since we don't live in the area and they are only open Thursdays to Saturdays, I hadn't been able to make it out until today. I went with my husband and we ordered the Crispy Chick'n Burger and the Sunshine Teriyaki Burger respectively. They use Gardein brand patties for their burgers which are delicious and we both really enjoyed our food. It's really great seeing various vegan food trucks around the city and Loving Hut has a great location in Yaletown close to False Creek . The lady working there was really friendly, giving us a run down of the menu and also directing us to good places in the area to sit and enjoy our food. That was definitely above and beyond the kind of service I've received from food trucks in the past. Looking forward to coming back and trying some of their other burger options next time! read more

This is the best food truck that has ever existed. My pal Bruce and I made plans to have lunch here on Friday. After seeing the daily menu on their facebook page, I knew I was going to have the Bacon Cheeseburger. I was going to annihilate it. With my face. Bruce ordered the BBQ Onion Ring Cheeseburger and we sat down and waited. IT WAS SO TASTY. The "bacon" was smokey, crispy and salty. The "beef" patty was perfect and not at all dry or bland. There was even some kind of vegan mayo on it, as well as some typical burger condiments. AND CHEESE SAUCE. Made of daiya I think? It was saucey, messy, hot, and delicious. I got it all over my lap and I regret NOTHING. I didn't feel all gross and sluggish after I ate it, either. I felt great! I'll probably be back, like, every day. read more

When it comes to vegan food, I'm a sucker for anything that has fake chicken in it. This place was perfect for that as it had a vegan chicken burger. The price was a little expensive for me ($10 for a burger...) but it was worth it. I've had the brand of chicken they use in the past, but never battered and fried and omg.... let me just tell you how amazing that tastes. I'm from Montreal and we have nothing like this! Isn't the point of a vegan or vegetarian restaurant to make their food taste like meat? The more the food tastes like meat the better the restaurant is! I dropped by my local Loving Hut with my friend. He was telling me about their mushroom burger and some yam fries! Ok the food was pretty good. The yam fries were crispy crunchy and the chipotle dipping sauce are a perfect match. The hamburger was surprisingly good. It was moist and tasty. I'm not a vegan and I've always been skeptical about vegan food tasting good. However, after my first experience with Loving Hut's "chicken" sandwich, I've changed my mind and will give credit where credit is due. The sandwich was good. My only gripe with it was that it had way too much sauce on it. I'm not a fan of condiments to begin with, but thought the fact that it was vegan chipotle "mayo" made me curious enough to give it a try. If I had this sandwich again, I'd ask for no sauce. The chicken 'substitute' was deep fried and very crunchy and actually tasted like chicken. But this type of sandwich is not typically something I would choose to eat, vegan or not. I thought it was good, but not outstanding - mainly due to personal taste. I've heard others love it, so obviously Loving Hut is doing something right! I am still curious about other items on the menu so I will likely go back to try them out, however, it's not something I'm rushing to do. read more

Plus they sell the root beer I most enjoy as well - Virgil's! 2 summers ago a friend introduced me to Lovin Hut and since then summers have always been delightful! He said to me ... 'You do know that it's a vegetarian burger ... right!?' ... as I chomped away - mighty happy! Could not believe it - tasted so flavourful and zesty! Have often jumped on the CanadaLine to get to Yaletown just to get a bite - well worth the trip! Burger is pricey but worth it! They do not update their schedule and worst of all do not follow their schedule. Clearly stated on google that they were open - they weren't. No one answers the phone - terrible business practices. Wasted an entire trip to Yaletown for no reason. There's better vegan options in Vancouver - avoid this unpredictable one. read more

I thought I was going to love this place. I love supporting vegan businesses but I was mistaken. They DO NOT adhere to their schedule. If you live far from Yale town and want to take a gamble based on if they feel like opening on the day you're going, then it's your risk to take. Just had their new onion ring burger and cheese yam fries... OMG! Best thing in town!!! And apparently they've already got plans to improve on the burger patty. If only they were open 7 days a week. SLOOOW service on the Saturday I was there. Looked like newbies in the food cart, which made for a long lineup and a long time to get our one burger. Grilled Mushroom Cheese Burger in Gluten Free Bun ($9 +$1 for gluten-free bun) -My friend's order so I didn't get to try this but she said the vegan patty was crunchy. Hmm. -Gummy daiya cheddar cheese also kinda gross looking. Don't look, just eat. Cheese Fries ($5, or $4 with burger) -Portion is OK. -"Cheese" is some sort of pulpy mix that didn't have the same gummy texture of the Daiya that was in the mushroom burger. -Tasty for being salty. Pretty decent for $14 and the fries can help make it a filling meal. Even without the fries, the size of the burger is pretty decent for $9. I wouldn't spend half my lunch hour waiting in line and waiting for my order, though. TIP: Look for their truck that pulls the food cart! It's probably nearby at metered parking which they have to feed periodically. I just think it's a curious indication of the cost of doing business. read more

boy oh boy I just tried tried this place and yummmmmmmmmmmmy. After watching horrendous videos of how animals are mistreated, I stopped eating meat and refused to eat burgers. However, after discovering this place, I am once again happy. omg omg omg the food was DELICIOUS. I had a bacon cheese burger and gobbled it up. I am very health conscious and try to eat only local, organic, vegan food and this place covered it all. WHAT! I cannot believe this is vegetarian. I can't remember the last time I had such a delicious veggie burger! I've had everything from the most terrible veggie burgers at your big chain grocery store to some yummy restaurant bistro veg patties, but this one takes the cake. Why? I'm glad you asked! [1] It looks and tastes like real meat. How... what... I don't... but it's true. It amazed me. Every bite I took I had to look at it again just to be sure. [2] It's big. Even my husband commented that it was a large burger, and I married an eater. I ordered a side of onion rings and now they went cold because I was just too full from the burger. [3] The onion rings are super good. As are the yam fries. But are fantastic choices as sides, if you can finish them. I knocked a star off because my burger basically fell apart on me as I got about halfway through. It was too large for me to fit top bun to bottom bun in one bite, which meant sliding bread and whatnot, and stuff falling out from the middle. Good thing i was eating at a table because this was so messy. There's a lot of sauce in the burgers, which softened it up quite a bit as well, and certainly added to the sliding of stuff. I'm not vegan, but I've been intrigued by the Loving Hut Express food truck for months as they park just a block from my apartment and I often pass by on my way home from work. The smells wafting out their little window are inviting. The concept is appealing. Still, it took me months of perusing their menu before I finally decided to order something. The reason for this is that I don't often like to eat fried food and quite frankly, nothing on their menu sounds super healthy. I suppose you could argue that vegan food is healthier than the meat/cheese alternatives. And I get it, they're out to prove you can have a hearty vegan meal that's not your typical salad but in some ways they've taken a step too far to provide only comfort food options. After considering it for a while, last night I stopped by the truck to order myself the Cheesy Philly Sub with Mushrooms and Onions and an order of Sweet Potato Fries with Cheese. Along with a couple of beers, I had a vision of a nice cozy meal on a rainy cold night after a long week. I deserved something that's just a little bad while masquerading as something healthy and good for you. I can honestly tell you -- that sandwich was amazingly good. I am a cheese steak fanatic, and I was very skeptical about this sandwich satiating my craving for the real thing. It tasted good in that I-want-another kind of way. And at some point, I probably will have another although I will try my best not to make it a habit. It scares me a little bit that I don't understand what TVP (textured vegetable protein) really is. I mean, I get what it is but don't understand how it can have such a long shelf life and taste so good as a meat substitute when rehydrated and cooked up on a grill and slapped into a sub. I don't like the idea of processed foods, and TVP sounds just as nasty as McDonald's meat to me in the sense that it's entirely a product of food manufacturing and manipulation. While the service was great and the food tasted really good, I just can't give them a 4 or 5 star rating because I get a feeling they use packaged ingredients. I would respect them a lot more if they used all natural ingredients and made all their own food instead of using so many processed ingredients. I am in love with Loving Hut - the kind of love that is passionate, reckless and fraught with the worst kind of (cashew?) cheese. I would write ballads about this place. I would start wars over this place. If there was someone walking down the street eating one of their burgers I would mug them and run off into the sunset feeling as though my acquisition tactics were totally justified by the delicious goodness. Luckily for the denizens of Vancouver I'm also perfectly willing to shell out the $8 for a meal which leaves me feeling far too full to mug or run from anyone. The burgers/sammiches are delicious, and the service even better. The guys who run this place are friendly, polite and completely open to talking about veganism and their ability to customize the wares. Sure it's a little creepy once you realize the cultish vibe that Loving Hut has going on under the surface. But as long as they keep culting for the benefit of my health and the environment, who am I to judge? read more

Had the onion ring burger. Wow, it was a lot larger than I expected from the pictures! Staff at the cart were friendly, and the food arrived quickly. Overall the burger tasted pretty good - the veggie meat inside had a good flavour to it and the onion ring was nice and crunchy. However there was a bit too much BBQ sauce taste for my liking. The staple here are the chickpea fries. They are so crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. I mainly get the platter which marries a generous serving of hummus, salad, pita and pickled veggies alongside your main entree of choice. This is actually the first place that I have enjoyed tempeh. They slow simmer it in curry and onions. The result, pure bliss. I actually feel healthy after dining here. It's hard to say that with most dineouts. read more

I love this place like crazy. It's vegan and it greasy and delicious. I tried a few of their things but I'm stuck on the chicken burger (so crunchy, so good!) and their fries and two types of mayo (the chipotle is delicious!). Oh wait, and the onion rings. I pretty much like everything there. Did I mention they're ridiculously tasty? And nice! Oh .. and my absolute favourite thing of all .. GET THE TIRAMISU. Honestly .. I'm a fan of vegan food that still finds a way to taste rich and full of flavour and this place is it. The tiramisu in particular does NOT taste vegan one bit. Augh. I usually poke fun at my friends who are vegan - mostly about their limited food choices and if today's menu of twigs and leaves will be altered in any way. So when my friend asked if I wanted to have a vegan burger from Loving Hut, of course I said "big fat nope". But being the indecisive person that I am and not being able to find anything else to eat for lunch, I promptly joined her to this bright yellow food truck. Finally had a chance to try this food cart in Yaletown parked on the corner of Pacific Blvd and Davie Street! We ordered the grilled mushroom burger and the bacon burger. The mushroom burger we ordered with the gluten free patty and gluten free bun so as expected it is smaller than the regular size burger. It was a bit messy, the sauce was already oozing out of the wrapper when they handed it to me so it got all over my hands...not the best way to start off a meal. The burger was okay, not very filling, I could have had another but at $9 for just the burger I didn't think it was worth buying another. Also there weren't enough mushrooms for them to call it a mushroom burger! Slightly disappointed, when I order a mushroom burger I expect mushroom in every bite which I think is completely reasonable. It was more like mushrooms in every other bite. The bacon burger was okay, nothing special and I wouldn't go as far as saying it was delicious. Again not filling, my friend could have ordered another but not worth another $10 in his opinion. I didn't go at the busy lunch rush hour, I arrived at 2:30 and was the only one waiting for an order so I'm not sure why the chef didn't take more care in making and wrapping the burger since there was no rush. Probably won't go there again, the couple running the truck were very lovely but I don't think the food was worth the price especially since we had to go elsewhere to buy something a little extra to fill our bellies. read more

Loving Hut is awesome! I have eaten here a few times now- had the "chick-n" burger and the mushroom burger... both yummy. Both delicious. Cheesy sauce, warm, doughy bun, fresh toppings, juicy burgers with a slightly crispy exterior... *drools* Only slightly more expensive than something of similar size that you'd get at a mega-chain like McDonald's... and much better for you, the planet and the critters! I will definitely be back to Loving Hut Express. Unlike most fast food I've eaten in my life, I didn't feel like I was slowly poisoning myself. I once had a friend that commented they could never be vegan, as they did not want to have to rely on eating"birdseed". I get where he was coming from, as a lot of vegan food is reminiscent of what an animal might feed on-lots of nuts, grains and greens, and don't get me wrong, I love a good raw kale salad as much as the next vegan. However, as evidenced by this food cart, there are a lot of different ways to eat grains and greens! One of these ways, being in the form of the most delicious vegan burgers you will ever get in your mouth. I've only tried three sandwiches as of yet, which I blame on the ones I have tried being so damn good. The BBQ onion ring burger being the one taking the most fault. I have had this several times, and while I feel I should branch out and try other sandwiches so that I could review this cart better, I can't betray this delicious sandwich straight from the vegan gods. The bun is pillowy and sweet, like a good burger bun should be. The patty is luscious and satisfying. I like that it doesn't taste like meat (I stopped eating meat for a reason!) but it still retains enough essence of a "normal" hamburger to satisfy even a carnivore! (This is a fact, I have tested out on my omni friends!) The burger is swimming (literally, it's super messy to eat) in a delicious, creamy cheese sauce, paired together with BBQ sauce, it's heaven. But the pièce de résistance , is the onion ring that comes on the burger. Stroke of genius. Adds a whole other flavour dimension and a bit of crunch. However it is impossible not to make a mess while eating this burger, especially when you head to the waterfront to enjoy a view with your burger. The mess however, is well worth it. Moving on, I have also enjoyed the Chick'n burger a few times, and it was also amazing. It comes with a phenomenal chipotle mayo-a nice spicy addition. The chick'n patty is crispy yet tender, and like the burger patty, reminiscent enough of meat to be satisfying without making you freak out and think "oh crap it's like i'm eating an animal!" And it's got guacamole on it! The other sandwich i've tried is the Philly. It was good, but nowhere near as phenomenal as the other two burgers i've had.
