Unlike some rest stops that are shared, there are two distinct areas for this rest stop. We stopped on our way South, the stop located North of where Rooks Creek crosses the Interstate. This area provides some nice topographical variety. There is a decent size playground for the kids, a bridge crossing the creek to a dead-end lookout. The inside includes a couple of vending areas, and large clean bathrooms. Since I-55 is one of the major thoroughfares of the state of Illinois, there are large rest stops every 50 - 100 miles in both directions. Per the IDoT website, this is to promote driver safety. It also encourages frequent rest stops for those passengers who need it.

Please keep in mind that we aren't scheduled to work through the overnight hours so if anyone messes up the bathrooms or litters we are quick to clean it up as soon as we get to work. I honestly asked the manager if the hotel had been involved in a flood and I am still not certain…read morethat it wasn't. The door to the room was warped so bad that it simultaneously stuck on the handle side as it looked like it was going to break off on the hinge side. When I got in the room, you saw a one inch gap in between the bottom of the door and the frame. The sheets were stained with blood. The floor was cracked and buckling. The ceiling and shower was moldy. I caught a German cockroach climbing up the wall. I went to tell the manager about all the issues and noticed a number of the other rooms also had doors in similar condition to mine. One had several hornets buzzing in the window, which makes me think that the broken door may have let them build a nest in the room. The manager dismissed my concerns by saying, "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! It's an old building." I wasn't asking for a refund, but I got no impression that he would ever do anything to remedy all the problems that I noticed.

I mean, if you are indeed resting. Why not rest and review? Anyway, five stars. The vending machines are plentiful and varied -- and take Apple Pay. The rest room is clean. There are some nice trails for the walking of the dog. And what amazing timing given we had just yesterday listened to Aly Ward's Ologies podcast (the Bryology episode) -- the picnic shelters are beautifully moss covered. So there. Need to pee, drink, dog walk, snack or picnic? This is a fine place at which to do it. Thanks Indiana.
