Second stop on the San Diego California Burrito Tour................. Walked in, ordered a California Burrito to go. Total was just over $11.00. I saw the man start to prepare everything fresh. Open kitchen where you can watch him cook. He threw the fries in the frier, put the steak on the grill and pretty soon he was constructing my burrito. This thing was heavy! Very large burrito! Good, tender, well marinated steak, crispy fries, good pico and some cheese. Really tasty burrito. Why not 5 stars? Definitely could have used either some sour cream or guacamole. Add one or both of those in here, and its elevated to an almost perfect burrito. Still, overall, 8/10. Update: They brought back the salsa bar!!! Awesome!! Look.....The tacos are 5 stars. They're still legit and for real. However, I tried to branch out and try different menu items. Didn't go well. I'm not sure what it is. The flour tortillas? The quality of the cheese? You would think if the tacos are fire, everything else would be also. It wasn't. It was flat. It was mid. The burritos fell flat. The two best salsas are Habanero and Serrano. Arbol isn't good. Verde is mid, fresca is mid. I spend the extra money for the pico de gallo. It's ok. They chose the name Los Tacos for a reason. I think if they up the tortilla and cheese quality it would make a difference. Maybe procure from a local vendor. North county and indeed all of San Diego county is replete with Mexican restaurants. Some are holes in the wall, some are high end. A lot are in between. But the honor of best Mexican restaurant is always a bit elusive. Los Tacos is somewhere between a hole in a wall and a sit down restaurant. I would say most of the food is takeout, although they have ample seating at high, long tables. Tucked into a mall that has a lot of food choices, it's clearly the best deal in terms of price and I would argue quality. And for what it is, I would argue it's the best Mexican restaurant in Encinitas. For many that statement might be fighting words, but almost everything I've had there since it opened a few years ago has been fresh, tasty and made with quality ingredients. Moreover, in addition to their normal offerings of burritos and tacos and other reliable standby's, they will often have weekly specials that one might see in fancier eateries. Those include ceviche, Mexican "sashimi" and birria. Finally, in addition to quality food, the service is also very good. Friday and Saturday night = long wait for your food. I've had their tacos (Birria, Quesabirria and Al Pastor) and they're GREAT but the operations need a little improvement especially during dinner hours on weekends. Wait times can be VERY long (upwards of 30min) which is crazy for just tacos. They may need more employees but be prepared to wait or order ahead. There is a taproom next door so if you don't mind waiting, you can grab a beer. read more
