Los Tacos - Encinitas (A-)
Loved this place. Sure, there are other spots that have a better Adobada or Asada, but this place offers fast-food pricing, with high quality for both meat and seafood tacos - that was impressive! I'm now torn on where to rank them with TJ's, El Gordon, and Craft & Taco lounge. If I specifically just wanted Adobada & Beef Tongue, I guess TJ's wins for me. But if I feel like a mix of stuff, Los Tacos ranks very highly for me.

My friend had 1 day to spend in San Diego. He actually worked in the food & bev industry in Hong Kong, so tasted pretty much anything one can think of, from local cheap eats all across Asia, to Michelin fine dining. And he asked me what's unique in San Diego. To me, that has to be tacos.
So, our first stop with TJ's since their adobada is one of my favorites. I also took the opportunity to try the beef tongue, also pretty wonderful and will be ordering that instead of asada in future visits. My plan was to then take him to Craft & Taco Lounge so he gets to sample both street tacos and modern tacos, but apparently, many taco places are closed on Mondays. Referring back to my taco hopping list, I had yet to try Los Tacos so off we went.
I had low hopes when I saw the store front. Too clean a building to be down & dirty street tacos, situated next to a Peets Coffee, it looked like a regional fast food chain. I walked in and saw the unimpressive meat pit, and a bunch of veggies being grilled on a hot plate that reminded me of Chipotle. Did I bring my buddy to the wrong place in the one day he gets to spend here? We studied the pretty expansive menu, and settled on 5 different tacos and a shrimp ceviche.
Baja shrimp taco (A): nicely marinated, beautifully crunchy outside, fresh "springy" meat with seafood sweetness. This was the highlight taco for me.
Al pastor (A-): meat had very nice crust, smokey, maybe a touch less tasty than TJ's, but the great mix of avocado and pineapples really enhanced the overall taco.
Baja fish (B+): nicely fried fish, although a touch underseasoned. That baja sauce, or whatever it's called, bloody awesome! I want to bathe in it, with buckets of tortilla chips floating around.
Asada (B): nice meaty, smokey flavor, but a little tough. Still a pretty good taco, but nothing that excited me.
Birria (B): nice and tender, but underseasoned. I know it's a little apples to oranges, but having just had the beef tongue at TJ's, this was definitely not in the same league.
Tortilla with dip (A): tortilla chips were served very warm, super light & crunchy with just the right amount of salt to not overpower the toasted corn aroma, and that damn wonderful dip! What the heck is it?
Shrimp ceviche (B-): this was the weak dish. The flavor was okay - tangy, savory, like many other ceviche spots. Everything tasted fresh, but the shrimp felt rather tough and overcooked. Guess it wasn't just cooked in acid but also boiled or steamed?
This place was a very nice surprise, and already added to my list of places worth revisiting in San Diego. For a fast food spot, I feel this place deserves more honors than In & Out, especially given the variety of food they serve. Well done and I will come again!

Grading scale:
A+: You absolutely have to try this place, even if it's a big effort to get there and may or may not cost an arm & leg. Oh, and parking might suck pretty badly too so be prepared.

A-: Very very good. 30 minute drive, a little pain parking. May or may not be pricey.
B+: Very good, and a little bit of driving is fine.
B: Acceptably good and a solid choice if in the area, but not a destination restaurant.

C+: You're really hungry and want something to eat, this place won't make you foodie happy, but at least now, you're full.
C: Mediocre. You ate, and you're thinking "meh". Probably not coming back, but not bad enough to make you angry.
C-: Okay, that was kinda sucky. Not coming back but feeling a little pissed about the bad restaurant choice. Dummy.

F: You're secretly planning how to get the place shut down without getting caught, and wishing your worst enemy has to eat from this place the rest of his / her life. read more
