What a wonderful experience we had for dinner last night. We had a recommendation from a friend that had eaten there a few years ago and they raved about it. Checking the Yelp reviews, I have to agree with Erick O's review! Arriving close to 8pm, we had no reservations and had no issues grabbing a spot. It did get busy and unfortunately they had to turn folks away. I recommend making a reservation via their website. The brother and sister operators do an outstanding job and there is a attention to detail you just don't see with other restaurants trying to turn the tables quickly. We ordered several items, but the eggplant and peppers along with the smoked salmon were by far the best. As always for me, the beer is served very cold and never had a chance to empty the glass before being asked if I would like another. Make sure you stop by and give them a try. We went on a Friday night without a reservation. We got there at 8pm and they asked if we had a reservation but still seated us quickly. If you are planning on going any later I would suggest a reservation. The tapas were delicious. The artichokes are a must have!! The cróquets and eggplant were also delicious. The salmon was ceviche style which we were not expecting, but good none the less. Goooood Paella. We got here at 3:15pm and the owner told us that the kitchen stopped serving paella at 3pm and that they start making it again for dinner around 7. However, we were starving and we said we arrived here after researching a place to get some paella. This might have been the best meal we had while visiting Spain. However, the food wasn't the only hit. The service was exceptional as well. I turned to Yelp during our recent trip to Spain and singled out a few restaurants to try as we were dying for some authentic Spanish cuisine. It was an added bonus when locals at our hotel recommend Los Pergaminos. Upon arrival I knew we were in for a treat as the smell of the food invigorated my appetite. I was like whatever that is, get in my belly! The waiter was truly helpful and knowledgable in helping us select the perfect wine paring along with appetizers, because we knew we wanted the paella. We had decided to go with their house wine, red which was amazing. The waiter mentioned there house wine is just as good as some of the cellar wine for the fancy folks in the back. It didn't disappoint. We paired these with a special they were offering of Bacalao ( Cod ) Croquettes. These little balls of love were to die for. So rich in flavor, the cod was not overpowering or overwhelming. It was the right amount of fish, cream and hints of cheese. We then with Gambas (grilled shrimp). Another hit from the first taste, these little guys were grilled with garlic and olive oil, simple and delicious! Then there was the Paella! My god how good was this, we literally ate everything on the plate, there wasn't a grain of rice left. The gambas was delicious, the mussels were amazing and flavorful, the calamari was cooked to perfection but rice was the hit! Perfect texture, wasn't too soft, wasn't to hard the flavor and taste was just perfect. We loved the Los Pergaminos and would recommend it to anyone. read more

If you want a TASTE of what Spain has to offer, look no further than this place. It looks like any run of the mill restaurant but when you enter and are seated you're transported into Old Barcelona. The ambiance is so inviting in itself. The wait staff is probably the most attentive and friendly I've encountered in Spain thus far. The food We had a few tapas and of course the Paella. The tapas (Gamba's al ajillo, shrimp tacos, green peppers) were each divine in their own way. Disclaimer, the shrimp tacos were not tacos but much tastier in my opinion. The Paella exceeded every expectation of what I expected from Paella from España. It even had a nice caramelized bottom which was heavenly. I take Yelp for granted and I seem to be reminded of how great Yelp is every time I go out of the country so I made a promise to myself that I will write as many reviews as I can for all the places I eat at this time so that the next tourist in this foreign country can use my review to navigate his meals so here's my first. Lets see how many I end up writing. :) Los Pergaminos is a family owned & operated restaurant located in what is known as Gothic Quarter in Barcelona. It is very close to Barcelona Beach (aka Barceloneta Beach) but also very close to Mercado de La Boqueria, La Rambla, & Catedral de Barcelona (which you should all go see but that's for a different review on a different day.) My gf & I were on a mission to find the best paella in Barcelona during our vacation and we were lucky enough to have dined at this restaurant. From the food to the atmosphere to service to cleanliness, Los Pergaminos is 5 stars all around. I'm no paella expert but I think I know a thing or two now from my trip and this was by far the best paella we've had during this trip. The price was 15 euros per person and a minimum of 2 people so our seafood paella (pictured) was 30 euros which was plenty for 2 people. To be completely honest, it could have been a bit bigger and it could have had more seafood BUT i believe in quality over quantity and this place definitely had the best quality paella in Barcelona that we've had although the quantity was not as big as other places (but not by much). It had the most flavor out of all the paellas we've had and the quality of the rice & seafood & vegetables were just better. The house wine was also very good (pictured) but I'm no wine expert. Maybe it was the atmosphere or maybe it was the meal that contributed to it but the red wine i had was really good. My gf had the house rose and that was the best rose we've had in all of Barcelona. (We dont know anything about red wine or rose's but we asked the server for his recommendations were and these were what we got and it was great!) Most importantly, our service was amazing! We were served by a gentleman who basically sat there and explained the whole menu to us for like 20 minutes because my gf kept asking questions and it didnt phase him one bit. He was actually happy & excited to be our server and that's not something you see every day, not in the states or in europe really. I don't know what "the best paella" is supposed to taste like but i honestly believe this place should be mentioned in that discussion. P.S. All the pictures look bad because of the lighting at this place. It's pretty dim & it's hard to take good pictures. We walked into Los Pergaminos on a whim when we couldn't get into the restaurant we were planning on going to down the street -- and, I'm so glad we did!!! The venue is intimate and romantic, the service was so helpful and nice, and everything we ate was ah-mazing. We stumbled on this wonderful restaurant during the Christmas festival. Everything about it was wonderful. The food was outstanding. We had a fried artichoke and jamon starter and then shared a wonderful paella of chicken, calamari, and artichokes. This was followed by a wonderful Catalan flab with a perfect brûlée top. The wine list was well-edited with plenty of variety. We had a wonderful Grenache from the region. Sergio (front of house) and his sister (chef) took over the 33 year old business from their parents when they retired. They are doing an excellent job! I heartily recommend it! read more

Los Pergaminos means 'the scrolls' in Spanish. We passed this restaurant many a time in our wanderings around Barcelona. One night we were craving paella but then it was too late to eat it since most places serve it at certain times. So we tried again the following night for a different place and found out that it was closed on Sundays. Just our luck. Enter Los Pergaminos. We had passed by previously and noted the menu board outside. They had paella until 10:30pm. We walked in. The decor is dark and dusty like pirate scrolls. We ordered sangria, duck foie gras stuffed figs, shrimp in garlic butter, and mixed paella. Let me just tell you, the duck foie stuffed figs are AMAZING. I want to retire somewhere and pop those little babies all day long. Yes, please. The shrimp in garlic butter was good too. We had to ask for bread just to dip it into the garlic butter sauce. So good. The paella is for a minimum of 2 people. They won't make it for one. Well they might if you just happen to be two strangers in a restaurant wanting the same thing. But then you'd have to sit together and I digress. The paella was really good. There was a decent amount of crunchiness and softness to the rice. The mussels were actually not fishy! The chicken was cut into large chunks. The shrimp was perfectly cooked. The calamari rings were tender. I'm not sure there was any rabbit involved but if it was there, I couldn't tell. I was a happy girl. All I wanted to eat in Spain was paella and I got my wish. Ok, I know paella is from Valencia, but don't ruin this for me! I loved it. That said, I would venture back to Valencia anytime if you want to show me your favorite paella place. We had excellent service. The host and servers spoke a decent amount of English, albeit with a sexy accent. If anything, come for the duck foie stuffed figs, but stay for the paella. *drool* read more

I loved everything I ate here. It's a quiet little restaurant off the beaten path. We ordered the foie gras stuffed figs, a goat cheese/apple/foie gras dish, prawns in garlic oil, and seafood paella. The figs were absolutely amazing. They sprinkle a thick and sweet balsamic on top. The flavors and textures were perfect! The goat cheese, apple, fois gras dish was amazing. It comes with sweet cracker biscuits that perfectly complemented the spread. Perfect combination of sweet and savoury. The paella was probably the best paella I've ever had. It was packed with seafood! They warn you that it takes about 30 minutes to make, but it was well worth the wait. My favorite dish was the shrimp in garlic oil. If you come here, you HAVE to order this. The prawns were large, tender, and bathed in a garlic oil that was out of this world. I would come back to Barcelona for this dish alone! read more

Paella is their specialty & that's exactly what we were looking for! They offer several varieties and we chose the seafood option. Our server told us the dish takes 1/2 hour to prepare and the price on the menu is per person for 2 diners to share. We were brought the tomato bread and olives plus a good red wine to get us through our wait. In slightly less than 30 minutes we were delivered an iron skillet of a most delightful paella loaded with mussels, prawns, shrimp and a few clams (these were amazing & left us wanting more). The rice had a creamy risotto quality to it in the best possible way with fabulous little crispy bits around the edges. Service was attentive and efficient throughout our visit. A case where the Yelp reviews led me a bit astray. Food wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as many other more local, less touristy options. It wasn't overly touristy, but there were only non-locals in the restaurant. Food was pretty good, like the paella which was quite tasty, but several of the tapas were reheated and only served lukewarm. Barcelona's Barri Gotic made me feel like an explorer, a kid at heart again. The narrow, cobble-stoned streets and alleys that blend into one another and eventually into plazas teeming with life, make you want to throw away the map and revel in being lost. Well, that is easy to do if you are a crazy American, who fails to bring a cell phone that has ex-US coverage or have limited minutes on your unlocked iPhone with pre-paid SIM card... Alas, my travel buddy, Rosa, and I found our winding and bewildered way to Los Pergaminos thanks to yelp.com. We had tried going there on a Monday night after much walking. We were exhausted and disappointed with our unsuccessful first attempt. Yet, Rosa would not be thwarted. She had read the rave yelp reviews, saw that it was family owned and operated with a warm and cozy ambiance and she was focused. We returned a few days later and to our surprise, they were open. Our experience there, thanks to CLAUDIA, was the most amazing. She suggested a very solid red-wine pairing the first night and dishes that made our stomachs happy. (please see the photos). Claudia actually spoke to us in ENGLISH (thank you) with occasional small discussions in Spanish (thanks to all of my Spanish college professors and high school teachers!!!! Spanish has become my go-to language) I would highly recommend this place and my favorite was the dessert: Crema Catalan. DELICIOUS! You have to try the jamon iberico and pan con tomate. The paella...(we had the chicken and non-seafood one b/c of shellfish allergies) was delicious and I'm sure that the seafood one would be equally so. To die for was the foie gras layered with goat cheese and topped with apple and caramelized sugar (yummmmers) We were so pleased that we returned again another evening. The price is moderate, but tapa, family style sharing keeps prices rather reasonable. I'm torn about Los Pergaminos and have conflicting thoughts. If you want a good Spanish cuisine/tapas experience, this place probably deserves four stars. They had a good selection of tapas (we enjoyed the foie gras stuffed figs, the honey eggplant, the patatas bravas, and the morcilla) and the paella as definitely tasty and authentic. However, I give it three stars because some of the dishes seemed a just a little too oily and our server kind of pressured us into ordering more than we initially had wanted (she said we wouldn't be full enough after four tapas and a paella.... quite wrong. I felt like I had to be rolled home). The figs were an experience but I felt that they could have been seasoned a little more interestingly, and the eggplant, though delicious for a few bites, were the overly-oily culprit. So, good for Spanish cuisine. Order less if you don't want to be in a food coma for several hours after. read more

We got a great server, who was very patient with all our questions and gave us great advice. Ordered the seafood and meat paella to share between three, the aubergine with honey as a tapas choice as well as jambon croquettes. Finished off with the Creme Catalana to share for dessert. We shared a bottle of Sauvignon white wine - the Jane Ventura label- as a compromise, since I like sweet and the guys I was with liked dry. We arrived right at 7pm, and considering how busy it got super quickly, I would totally recommend doing the same. It does really take a minimum of 30minutes for the paella to cook, so we got x2 tapas to share - the aubergine with honey and the jambon croquettes. Of these two, I really would absolutely recommend getting the aubergine with honey. These were creamy and salty and sweet and tempura-like, when I first bit I thought we had ordered hot potato fries by mistake, but a very classy variety, before being corrected by my dining companions. I also like the jambon croquettes, as the potato hash was just perfect, but the aubergine won my palate over. We loved our tapas, but the paella outdid anything we have ever eaten before. Each bite was a medley of rich and comforting flavours and there was a lightness to the food, which made for a smoothness, almost as if drinking from your favorite whisky. The serving size was generous as was the portion of seafood - I finished off my last bite, feeling both content and satisfied. We took a breather for 10minutes and then ordered the Creme Catalana dessert to share. I have had this before (for the first time, in Venice) and loved it there, but there was a mellow sweetness with crunchy almonds and the cold meeting the burnt sugar, that we all agreed this was infinitely better. One final word - the service was superb here! Felt like had come to a friends place and our waiter was just excellent. We ended the night with a herb after-dinner drink, a perfect end to a perfect meal. read more

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. This place is phenomenal. We found this place while we were in Barcelona in early June. I wanted to make sure I wrote a review, so I made a spacial note to myself to not forget. That's how much my family and I loved this place. We were there with my hubby and 2 teenage sons. My sons asked to go back on our last night. They have never asked before. I believe it's the combination of quality of food, quality of service and the ambiance is what it makes this place deserving of more than 5 stars. The taste is unlike other restaurants. High quality and refreshing. I absolutely loved my shrimp tacos which is unlike I have ever had. My hubby loved the octopus. The artichoke and potato dish were uniquely prepared and amazing. Amazing service at this place and super homey. The seafood and meat paella for 2 is enough to serve 3! It is packed with a lot of flavor. The foie gras stuffed fig, was amazing.. they packed a lot of foie gras into the fig. The Apple and goat cheese foie gras was amazing, the top was torched or broiled so there is a slight sugar crust. The only thing I didn't like was the dessert in the jar, it was a lemon mousse type with crushed cookies on the bottom. The menu is super interesting, we also go the 'won-ton' pockets with blood sausage inside, it was interesting and reminded me of Chinese dim sum, the filling was very good and the spices were very good. Paella seems like a topic that inspires passionate debate among the Spanish, whether what you are eating is technically paella, or where are the acceptable places to eat paella. I like the passion. The paella here was alright, but not my favorite. I would have to say that the best paella that I've ever had is still stateside. We ordered the mixed paella, which had chicken and seafood in it. Given another chance, I would have ordered the seafood only paella (I was hoping the mix had sausage in it). The dish was a little salty for my taste, but other than that, it had plenty of seafood in it. We also tried the honey eggplant dish. Sticks of eggplant lightly fried and drizzled with honey.
