Los Generales is located in a freestanding building with well-lit, easily accessible parking. The interior is clean, neat, colorful, and has a comfortable rustic neighborhood feel, with plenty of wood, tables, and booths. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the restrooms were clean as well. There is also a covered outdoor seating area, although on the evening we visited, there were no tables set up. Alcoholic beverages are available. The menu is a good size and offers both Tex-Mex and Mexican favorites. Breakfast features traditional Mexican fare and is available during specific hours. The lunch menu includes plates similar to those offered at dinner. The dinner menu has a nice variety of appetizers, salads, entrées, side dishes, à la carte items, and desserts, including several seafood choices. Our dinner party ordered a variety of dishes, including chicken caldo, chile relleno with chicken and poblano sauce, a pollo quesadilla, and an asada plate. Everything was well received. The portions were generous, and there were absolutely no complaints about any part of the food or dining experience. The staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout our visit, and we experienced no service issues. Overall, Los Generales offers reasonable prices, generous portions, a comfortable neighborhood atmosphere, and a good selection of Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes. I thought this place would have great service, but unfortunately that wasn't our experience. When we arrived, there was a sign asking guests to wait to be seated, but a waiter in the bar area screamed across the restaurant for us to find our own table. After we sat down, the waiter came over, practically tossed the menus at us onto the table, and said he would be back shortly. However, he never returned. We later saw him serving another table that had arrived after us. After waiting a while, another person came over to help us and asked us if we had been helped. The food was okay. The restrooms were clean. However, at our table, we noticed crumbs on the ledges, all over the place which took away from the overall cleanliness. Overall, the food was decent, but the service and attention to cleanliness could use improvement. I will never return to this place. read more

We've been coming to this restaurant for quite a while, which is why our most recent experience was so disappointing. Unfortunately, the quality seems to have steadily declined, and this visit may have been our last. The inside of the restaurant looked more like a storage area than a welcoming dining space. My margarita was actually served in a chipped/broken glass, which immediately raised concerns. Then the food arrived, and the presentation and quality were extremely disappointing--it honestly looked and tasted worse than something you might expect from an elementary school cafeteria. I'm not interested in trashing a local business, especially one we've supported for some time, but there comes a point when the overall experience simply becomes unacceptable. To make matters worse, I became sick afterward and remained ill for the next two days. San Antonio has far too many excellent Mexican restaurants to continue spending money somewhere when the food quality, cleanliness, presentation, and basic attention to detail have deteriorated this much. I genuinely hope management takes a serious look at what has changed because this restaurant used to be a place we enjoyed. Sadly, after this experience, I don't see us returning. read more

So I'm giving 4 stars because the sweet tea was very watery and not sweet. The food was excellent! Everyone's food came out hot and fresh. I had the cheese enchiladas with chalupa plate. The enchiladas were delicious. The cheese was melted to perfection and the beans and rice were the delicious as well. My mother and I went to Los Generales to attend a celebration of Life luncheon. We were greeted immediately by staff and they were very friendly and caring. The waitstaff were very attentive as well. The establishment is a tad dark inside and it seems like an old saloon. We're definitely going back to try other items on their menu. Id like to try the green enchiladas. We were given a smaller menu to choose from since it was a large party. Soldi 3 stars and would even give it a 3.75 if I could. Good food. Great portion size. Service was good. Lots of tables inside and plenty of parking outside. I do believe they have outside seating when the weather permits. The meat was well cooked and flavorful. The salsa and chips they serve when you arrive are tasty. We paid extra for flour tortillas for our enchilada because my parents don't like corn tortilla. It was $1.99. I did ask when we ordered for our drinks to be put in a to go cup since I wanted to take it home instead of drink it there. They did charge for the cups. The drink was included in the lunch special price of $11.99. Some of the lunch specials came with two items which is great for when you can't decide what you want. My Guisada and enchiladas also came with a side of tortillas. I could choose between corn and flour. They had a napkin dispenser at the table which is nice so that we didn't have to call the waitress over for more. It was a comfortable dining experience. We will come back to eat again. This place has become mine and my husband's go-to spot for a cheap, decent breakfast -- you really can't beat it! We can both eat for under $20, which is wild these days. The portions are huge too -- honestly, we could easily split a plate and still leave full. My usual is the chorizo & egg plate or their tortilla soup, both so satisfying. Every now and then we'll bring the kids along, and they're perfectly content splitting a quesadilla three ways (though my oldest is a big fan of their caldo -- he always wants his own bowl!). It's a local spot for us, so the convenience is great, but what really makes it special is how the staff knows us. That familiarity just makes it feel extra cozy and welcoming every time we walk in. read more

This amazing little place has been around in my life for years. I have no idea why I didn't review it sooner except. It was here before Yelp, and I just never did. Please forgive my lapse in getting it done sooner! The authentic Mexican food is not spicy but very real. Good homemade ingredients that melt in your mouth as you take your first bite! The tortillas literally melt in your mouth. The bacon is thick and flavorful. The pancakes are light and fluffy, like the omelets. The menudo is just spicy enough and comes with all the sides and fixings you could want. The tea is just sweet enough. Today, I ate the M3 Monster Taco. I could only eat the one taco. This has a tortilla filled with beans, eggs, bacon, and cheese. The friend I went to breakfast with had the bacon omelet and the pancakes. The food was fabulous and piping hot! Came with green salsa and, of course, pancake syrup. For the evening crowd there are drinks and the normal fare to eat in tue evening time. I have usually only gone here for breakfast. The inside of the restaurant is slightly dark, but that is part of the ambiance of the location. It has servers who literally have been there for years. We really enjoy this place. There has been some changes over the years. Some good changes, some not so good. I made it out here for lunch one day, and was really surprised by the size of the plates that we were being served. So we decided to come for dinner, we got to sit down fairly quickly, even though they were busy. I ordered a michelada, which was okay, I've had better. Two cheese enchiladas with rice and beans, and a side of beef fajitas. My favorite, unfortunately when the plate came, the only thing that was hot, was the plate, the rice and the beans, the rest was cold. So I didn't eat the enchiladas and the fajitas . Maria had the green enchiladas, with chicken inside, with rice and beans. Her meal was nice and hot. And very tasty. Yum. She shared with me, cause I didn't eat my food. Eric got the Santa Anna plate, and unfortunately, his plate was similar to my plate, his enchiladas and fajitas were cold. He did eat his puffy taco and his chalupa. Liz had the quesadilla with asada meat. This quesadilla was huge, her food was nice and hot, and she let me have a slice of her quesadilla. It was very tasty. The only thing I didn't like about it was, that they use meat with a lot of fat still on the meat, and when you have to chew the meat like chewing gum, it not fun. The cheese made this quesadilla taste good. So we let the wait staff know about our meals being cold, so the Alex the manager came over, apologized and made our plates over, but to go, nice and hot. So, apparently, there is this thing called Puffy Tacos. I consider myself pretty versified on Mexican food, but I had never heard of Puffy Tacos. We drove 30 minutes for these tacos, LOL. And they were good! The shell is in-between hard and soft, but definitely crunchy. The enchiladas and quesadilla rounded out our meal. The margaritas were excellent. But the best part was the ambience. Typical Mexican restaurant, but they had live entertainment. A one man band was playing. He played guitar, sax, harmonica, keyboard and sang. This was one of the most proportionally generous places i've been in a long time (reference photos). I used to be a frequent flyer at this place since its close by. Food was good service was ok as well. Until yesterday I ordered my beef enchiladas off the lunch menu and it came out fast. My husband got beef fajita. After I ate the enchilada I started on the rice,( I am not one to mix everything up) I like to eat things sorta separately. I bit into a spoonful of rice and all I heard was a crunch and pain in my left jaw. I spit out to be what was 2 chicken bones . I called the server over and she got the manager Claudia out to speak to us. I showed her my dish with the chicken bone and explained. She did not even blink and eye and said " but you ate the rest of the dish" I explained to her I almost choked and she said " it happens but you ate the rest of the dish" took the dish up and walked away. I am so upset not even offer another meal or anything. She did not care about the pain and or choking hazard. or where the chicken bone came from. We both did not even have any chicken on our dish. Never again I will hopefully talk to the owner and see what can be done. If I could give zero stars I would read more
