Full five stars was earned on my last visit to Birotes over the holidays. I went by myself for breakfast, and had the green chilaquiles with cafe de olla. The portion was very, very generous, everything was hot, fresh, and bursting with flavor, and I was provided some Christmas cookies on the house! It was a super pleasant and relaxing visit, a quite interlude to the crazy Christmas rush. They also had a full pastry case when I went this last time, so I got to see all of their amazing looking baked goods. I got a couple to-go, and enjoyed them at home later. Birotes has been a great restaurant to stop by when we're in the Kitty Hawk area and we're craving Mexican breakfast/brunch. I also pick up breakfast tacos from here occasionally. The food is always delicious and the portions are big! This is one of those places where my husband and I tend to split a plate and add on tacos if we're still hungry. I will say that service could be better. It's best to go when it's not busy (avoid the lunch rush as it will take 40+ minutes to get your food), but I have noticed most of the time the service is slow. My family and I were seated promptly and I chose the fresh lemonade, it tasted perfect. I got the quesabirria plate and it was piping hot and so delicious. I thought it came with 3 but almost shed a tear when I saw there was a 4th one . The staff are absolute sweet hearts and treat you like family. Our wait for the food was short about 15-20 minutes and they apologized (?!) for the long wait but said that it was because it's all made fresh lol. I agree with the other reviews, nice little gem. Staff is friendly and service is quick. Portions are huge we had to take leftovers home. I had the flautas and there were huge pieces of chicken which made them bigger than you'd get at other places. The refried beans were delicious and for me it's normally I'm either way if I want them. These had a fantastic flavor. I could be completely wrong but it tasted like there was some type of cheese in them. Next time I go I'm going to try the mini tacos. Quesadilla was huge and my oldest could only eat one section. Bought a few things from the bakery but didn't take any pictures. What we got was delicious and will be buying more next time. We've tried to go a few times now as we live in the neighborhood and it says open on this app as well as facebook but show up to it being closed. Visited the new restaurant today. I am impressed. The location is small, but there are tables and curbside. The service was friendly and fast. I had the chilaquiles with fried egg on top. The egg was ordered over medium, but it came over easy. The pappas had a good crisp to the outside and softness on the inside ... love potatoes that way. They like most of the plate could have used more salt. The sauce was thick and flavorful. The corn tortillas had a lot of body to them and held up well to being filled with beans and sauce. This is as authentic as this Tennessee boy has ever experienced! The chips were apparently deep fried and the salsa was drinkable! Every bite of every dish we had and shared and drooled over was deliciousio! The tacos and sopras and quesadillas b's were amazing. The food is good but if the order is wrong most times it's just not going to work for me. Today, not only was the order wrong, the food was not good either. Visiting San Antonio and was looking for authentic Mexican food. It was so good we came back the next day to try some more menu options. First day we got Chilaquiles and Machacada plate for breakfast. On day two we decided to try the breakfast tacos, as I couldn't finish the platters. Their tortillas are home made. To be honest, I thought this place was my little gem. I went today and took my family. Big disappointment today. We were seated right away. The server was very nice. The place was a little busy but there were three tables available. There was 6 of us. Server took our order for drink when she sat us down. Waited and waited and the kids are getting hungry and moody. My daughter had to go to the car to get them a snack. 5 minutes after that, finally here come the chips and salsa. 25 minutes later our food comes. So then I turn to see my daughter going through her torta. Onions on it menu doesn't show it comes with onions. Not just a little onion but looked like they tried to make up for the little to no meat. So now the torta looks like road kill. Server says the onion is not on the menu but it comes with it. Torta was replaced quickly however hardly any meat and they out way to much mayonnaise, like it was just slapped on and was very sloppy. My daughter ended not eating it and said she would take it to go. She forgot it on purpose. The sopes had about 7-8 pieces little of meat on them. They were good from what my son in law said just needed meat. Well I did notice prices went up and quality is down. Maybe they feel since they have a lot of regular customers that it doesn't matter. Will I go back?? Big No. but I guess it won't matter since I'm not a regular there. The picture of the huarache that I posted a while ago is not the same huarache you'll get now. We heard of this Mexican restaurant by word of mouth , we have not been disappointed. I have had mainly breakfast, my favorite dish is the chilaquiles plate with their cup of cafe de olla . The plate is enough food , the chilaquiles are the perfect spice . My mother who enjoys authentic Mexican food , can't get enough of their Huarache. As I mentioned, cannot wait for my third visit so I can try some brisket. Is tucked away from the Main Street so you have to look, but this is a hidden treasure that you must try. They also have some baked goods and should be called baked greats. Cookies were delicious and the cinnamon was perfect. Empanadas we're on point and they have some selection. Not sure if they scale back the menu because they are not as busy as they should be, but hopefully it picks up because this place has some good food. Charros beans are excellent as well. Yelp recommended hole in the wall find. And I thought it was a great find. My first meal at any taqueria is always a chicken fajita taco with all available salsas. This time I added an order of papas fritas. The fajitas were skillet or griddle cooked with a nice lemon pepper seasoning and crisp tender onions and red and green bell peppers. The tortilla was fresh and fluffy. 4 stars. Green sauce was very flavorful and mild. The salsa roja was liquid fire but oh so good. 5 stars. First time here and I was looking forward to trying their potato tacos which came with 4 tacos, side of tomato sauce and a cabbage/pickled purple onion/radish garnish. The tacos had nothing in them but potato but with the spicy salsa it was pretty yummy. I ordered a side of rice and beans with a flour tortilla and the tortilla was really good. My friend had the steak a La Mexicana and said it was good but he really doesn't like skirt steak so rated it a 3.5. Being from the southwest, we might be a little pickier about our Mexican food but this little spot was pretty good for what I have had in Texas. Ok so third review and this is just on desserts. Conchas came out fresh so you know I had to grab some. I got an apple caramel empanada and OMG! Not overly sweet and the crust was so flaky and delicious! The husband got the tres leches cake, which I might add they do fresh for every order. Our waiter said they use a type of Mexican egg nog type for the leches part. I didn't get a picture of it but it was beautiful. It was a three layer cake with whipped cream in between each layer and each layer was perfectly soaked. Still cakey but soft from the leches. Oh and fresh strawberries in between the layers. The slice was huge! Could definitely be shared among 3-4 people. I didn't think I could love this restaurant more then I already did! Their food came out before ours and everybody else that came in after us. We tried to get her attention and she ignored us. Once we got somebody's attention we asked about our food and to find out she never placed it. The guy that manages the place apologized when saw us upset and leaving. Months later, we decided to give them another chance but we should have never done that. We placed our order to go because maybe we would avoid for our food to be delayed. We were wrong. We placed our orders we the lady who was at the register and bought bread, we waited 30 minutes and asked the lady how much longer. She told us she had no idea and will ask the kitchen. She forgot to ask them and started chatting with one of the waitresses. Another 30 minutes pass and we asked again, she goes oops I forgot to ask. Well, kitchen skipped our order and didn't make it. We asked the lady for a refund just for the food and when we were walking to our car the same guy from last time came out with our food (think it was our food) and apologized again. We were able to find seats and within 5 minutes someone took our drink order. During the course of the meal our waitress was attentive and checked on us frequently. I ordered chilaquiles verdes with eggs over easy. It was so flavorful and fresh. It came with diced potatoes, queso fresco, and homemade corn tortillas. Those corn tortillas were some of the best I've had. My husband got the huevos rancheros plate. He said it was good, savory, and hit the spot. He loved the chicharron taco. Our daughter ordered chicken quesadilla and it had to be the biggest I've seen. The cheese ooozed off the tortilla and chicken portions were very generous. My waiter at breakfast on Easter Sunday was obviously new but someone raised him right and taught him well. Pretty inexperienced, a little nervous, but super friendly, attentive and professional. The kind of kid who makes you think good things about his parents. One of many little details that collectively add up to a great restaurant experience. The flour tortillas are incredibly light and tender with a real home made taste. Maybe it's lard, I don't care. Chorizo is much better than average, much less greasy. Eggs are firm, but not overdone, a balance that few places can achieve. The lunch stars here are the birria tacos, with or without cheese. This style of taco seems to be kinda trendy around town right now. If you've tried them elsewhere and thought 'meh' you need to try these. The broth, (consomme, dip, broth) whatever you want to call it really stands out. Rich depth of flavor without just being spicy. The taco meat is carnitas and the corn shells are fried on the grill. You'll need more napkins. And get some bakery items to take home, empenadas, cookies, conchas, its all good. Overall, its the vibe of the joint that I love the most.
