Rude, unwelcoming atmosphere during trivia night.
Although none in my group knew before entering Loosey's for dinner on Monday evening, we soon found out that Monday is trivia night and that trivia is apparently more sacred than politeness, respect, and generally-accepted adult behavior to a shockingly large number of Loosey's patrons (and perhaps also to the management who did nothing to stop the onslaught of vitriol to which we were subjected for having a normal conversation in a far corner of the bar after dinner).
Since none of our group had been to Loosey's on a Monday before, we figured their trivia night was like that at other bars in which game-play logistics were such that players received the questions visually (on paper, on a TV screen, on a hand-held device, etc.) in deference to the fact that bars are not old-people bingo halls in which one should expect to hear a pin drop. After all, this was a _bar_, music was still blaring between trivia questions, and no announcements or signage indicated otherwise. No staff member or trivia player had come over to us once play started to request that we hold our conversation when trivia questions were being read.
Nothing indicated what was about to happen.
An hour or two after trivia play started, a table near us suddenly started yelling at us to "shut the f*ck up," began calling us "c*nts" and "d*ckheads", and told us to "die in a fiery crash" (no joke, that's verbatim). We had had no indication up until this point that anything was amiss. As far as we knew, we were carrying on a normal-volume conversation in a far corner of a normal bar.
When the chair shoving, obscene gestures, and vitriol intensified (after we tried to explain, in a reasonable manner that did not involve obscenities or threats, that we were simply having a conversation, which, as far as we knew, was perfectly allowed in a bar), one member of our party went to find a manager. While he was talking to the manager at the end of the bar, another trivia player sitting at the bar called him a "d*uchebag" for having the gall to speak quietly while a question was being read.
The manager did nothing. Instead, our group stood in uncomfortable silence until trivia ended, hoping to de-escalate the situation. Several members of our group later expressed safety concerns about leaving the bar when they saw several of the men from the trivia table standing outside.
Although I have been to Loosey's on a few other weekend occasions and generally enjoyed myself, this experience was horrible. Management showed poor planning (if trivia is to be silent, make some announcements, put up some signage -- let people know, for goodness sake - or, if the bar is to remain fundamentally a bar where patrons can converse throughout the evening, use a simple HDMI cable to project trivia questions on the numerous LCD screens so that silence isn't required), and they demonstrated even worse conflict resolution skills. Heck, they didn't even _try_ to resolve the conflict. They didn't attempt to enforce even a base level of decent adult behavior with the group slinging insults and making threats, and they didn't speak to us to explain trivia protocol.
They just let it happen, encouraging an unwelcoming atmosphere of childish vitriol.
