I've been catching up on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives to check out all those fantastic restaurants and Loops was first on my list! I tried Da' Meatball and since it was a la carte, I also ordered two Spicy Gyro Rolls with Hotziki dipping sauce. Wow! Watching them cook on Triple D and tasting the food for myself is a whole different experience than what I was expecting. Sure, the food looks good and it's interesting to even toss the marinara on the griddle, but it's mind-blowing in action! It's not a huge restaurant, but it is comfortable. I am from Chicago so I KNOW Italian beef. Loops "claims" they make Chicago style Italian beef but it's not true. 1) the bread is all wrong. They use like sub sandwich bread. You're supposed to use Italian bread which is slightly crusty outside and a little chewy inside. They literally just use sandwich bread shaped into a sub and it just soaks up the juice and is mush. 2) the Italian beef should be slow roasted and shaved paper thin and fall apart. The one I had was thick and tough. The fries are greek style, and you can add all the fixns but I opted for the simple plain and got some ketchup...no regrets! No need to drive 6 hrs to Chicago. True to my word, came back in for the Italian beef, albeit 6 years after my first visit. Actually had the Friday special which was a combo including an Italian sausage and hot giardiniera. It was crazy good. Spot on with the best I've had in Chicago. The only knock I have is the friendliness of the staff. The woman serving the food never smiled, had her face in her phone when she wasn't tending to an order, and clearly didn't want to be there. Told them all on the way out I thought the food was great and I got the feeling they were thinking "don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out." Came here after seeing this restaurant on DDD. We were not disappointed! We both had coney dogs that were just perfect. I have also had the Italian Beef here and look forward to trying a Gyro. While they do not have fountain drinks, they do offer Coke bottled drinks that lack a variety of diet or zero drinks. The store has been clean and comforting every time we have visited just as the staff has been very friendly and helpful. read more

I thought the Italian beef with hot giardiniera was fine but not amazing. The fries are absolutely amazing, 5 star for sure. They claim on their website that they have the best fries in Columbus and I think they are right. I can't think of a better batch of fries in Columbus or maybe anywhere, they really are that good. We found Loops recently because of their Italian Beef sandwich and everything we have had so far has been delicious with the meatball sub being my favorite so far with the Italian beef not far behind. The parking is a little confusing since the lot seems to be at the back of the building but I think there might be a side entrance. Service has been nice and quick. Went here on Saturday afternoon, right before the big Dec 25 snow storm. I had in mind a delicious, crisp dog with chili and cheese. I got convinced to order the Loops dog - the dog yellow mustard, raw onions, diced tomatoes, green relish, pickle spear, sport peppers & celery salt on a poppy seed. So, let me say that I lived in Northwest Chicago for 20 years. I've eaten at a dozen hot dog places and around 5-6 Italian Beef spots. My favorite Hot Dog is either Superdawg off Milwaukee or Morrie O'Malleys near White Sox field (now closed). I really love Portillos Italian Beef, dip that sucker and load on the hot giardiniera. Let me start with their fries: superior to most Chicago spots. Their fries were so good. Their hot dog was pretty good, not the best dog I've had but good. I'd get fries and dog next time. Their Italian beef was great for the beef but the bun wasn't up to standard. I got mine dipped and the sandwich was falling apart; the same happened with my wife. If they could fix their bread they would be a great spot but I can't say I'd get the Italian Beef again; just because it kept falling apart. Service was good. The ambiance was fine. I had no issues except for the bread. A true Chicago Italian Beef can be dipped (baptized, whatever) and hold together. Fix that issue and it's solid. It will leave you wanting to try the entire menu piece by piece which is what I plan to do over time lol my selective eater youngest got the coney dog and absolutely loved it! That's literally a WIN. Was on DDD twice. Cute little place. Great customer service. But the food was horrible!! The fetafire I had and I took one bite and I literally almost puked. It was horrible. Even the falafel was gross. (I eat a lot of places and I've never done that before.). Tried the meatball sub, it was ok but I expected it to be way better since it was on the show!! There's parking behind the building! I ordered the Titan, which I ate without taking a picture, and it was delicious! It was pita bread with loads of toppings, pork and veggies! After hearing a lot of good things about Loops, we have it a try and we're really happy we did! We did a takeaway order (live less than 10 mins.) Everything we ordered was piping hot still when we got home to eat. First things first: everything positive said about Loops fries is spot on. SO GOOD! A small order is huge too and worth every penny of $4. I got the Clark Street and it was delicious. The meats were tender and not dry. The peppers and mushrooms were fresh and perfectly cooked. The pita soft and cheese gooey. I'd absolutely get it again and definitely recommend it. Also tried a traditional gyro and it was very good too. The tzatziki wasn't the best we ever had but all in all, it was a good gyro. The side of chili was more like a cup of coney sauce so might not get that again, but it was still good, just not what was expected. The prices were really fair too, especially given how expensive typical fast food is now. Definitely give it a try! read more

I love everything that Loops stands for, but I can't say that I love everything that Loops makes. However, I do like most of it. I've visited several times over the years, and their goal is aspirational: replicating the signature dishes of a city that loves its food. But that comes with high expectations... The most consistent winner is the Chicago style Loops Dog. The Maxwell Street Polish is fine if you need a Columbus-based fix, but it's not as true to Chicago form as the hot dog. I'd say the same about the Italian Beef as well. Credit goes to Loops for creating the Gyro Roll. The spicy version exceeded my expectations. The combination of fried dough, gyro meat, spices and dip was a highlight of my recent visit. The core fries are really good on their own; I find that the versions with loaded toppings try to fix something that isn't broken. That said, the fries did come with a service snafu as it wasn't included in my takeout order. Fortunately I recognized this in the parking lot, and upon returning the fries were provided without a hassle. Overall, when I'm in a mood for a Chicago dog and fries, Loops is 5 stars. But there's a drop off when branching out into other Chicago staples. read more

After watching The Bear, we decided to grab an Italian beef from Loops in Grandview and added on a chili dog. Service was quick, the menu is a reasonable price point and nods toward Greek offerings when it's not a Chicago-style sandwich, or a dog. We took our food to go, but several people were eating in while we ordered. The Italian beef was particularly good and so was the jus that we requested on the side. Wish I could give a zero. I had incredible gastric and abdominal pain after eating their Clark St pita with chicken only. Eventually I had vomiting and diarrhea. The pita was large, soggy, and flavorless. The chicken breast chunks were dry, but plentiful. The grilled vegetables were overcooked and the cheese sauce sticky. Nothing tasted fresh. Before going to OSU for my son's first college visit, I asked a law enforcement buddy who does lots of trainings in Columbus for a recommendation for lunch. Without hesitation, he suggested Loops. After a full morning on campus, we arrived at Loops just before 2pm ready for some good grub! After looking the menu board over, I had been considering one of the gyros, but when I asked the gal behind the counter what she liked and she immediately said the Polish Po' Boy, I was sold! My son ordered the Clark Street gyro, which with a Coke, made our bill $19.54 after tax but before tip, which felt pretty reasonable for lunch for two. Selecting a table along the wall of the very clean dining room, we proceeded to take in the restaurant's Greeks-from-Chicago-in-Ohio vibe. As a sports fan, my son really liked the flags and references to the various Chicago sports teams. As geography geeks, we both enjoyed the wall of clocks displaying the local time here in Columbus, as well as Chicago (their previous home), Athens (their previous-previous home), and Los Angeles (I suppose just because). Additionally, the subway tiled wall and the giant subway car picture making up the full back wall really made us both look forward to our upcoming family vacation to Chicagoland! After a short wait, our food was ready, and we were both impressed! My son said his Clark Street was as good as it was filling. Personally, my Polish Po' Boy was a titanic sandwich that was more like a meal for two. This thing was so big, I could not fit the end of it into my pie hole, which is saying a lot because my wife says I have a really big mouth! The savory Polish sausage and the fries drench in tangy homemade barbeque sauce contrasted perfectly with the sweetness of the poppy slaw topping. My only issues were the twin facts that after eating the whole thing, I felt like I needed a bath because it was so messy with dripping goodness, and I was so full that I really just wanted to curl up and take a nap, rather than drive the 2.5 hours back home. PROS: good atmosphere, great food, and generous portions CONS: The Polish Po' Boy should come with a bib ('cause it is so big and deliciously messy) and a cuppa coffee (to ward off the inevitable post-meal food coma).
