Overall: Breakfast, brunch, drinks, dinner, whatever...L&E is sure to satisfy your comfort food cravings. The good: Came on a Saturday for a late brunch, and wasn't disappointed. The pumpkin granola muffin was warm, soft, and delicious. As for the main course, the chicken and waffles hit the spot on a lazy saturday, with heaps of juicy, perfectly-breaded fried chicken. The waffle wasn't overwhelming and the hash side was a good portioned side dish. Our server was friendly and quick, and the atmosphere leans old school with the exposed brick everywhere. The not-so-good: Not much, just didn't have the "wow" factor that I was expecting due to overhype. If I have one thing to complain about, it's that the menu was a tad too small, but that's being nitpicky. Food: 8.5/10 Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 8.5/10 read more

We came here early (like 3pm) on a Sunday night and had drinks in the back bar and put our name in the list for dinner. Our group of 8 got a table right when they started service. I'm so happy we were a large group bc it meant we got to explore a lot of the menu. There were so many really creative and tasty dishes. I'm sure the servers all say this, ours did, but these plates are mostly meant to be shared. Some are certainly large enough to be a meal for one, but really why keep that wild boar sloppy joe all to yourself when you can share and also have the falafel scotch egg, and the salt baked apple?! The drinks were pretty outstanding with a fun selection of beer and cider as well. Love the relaxed vibe paired with the elevated cuisine. read more

I'm giving this place 2 stars because the food wasn't terrible and the service was excellent. I came here as someone who isn't from Chicago and was looking for something different to eat on a Sunday evening. I was a little skeptical looking at the menu online because I have a very picky tasting pallet but I still decided to give this place a try. Our waitress was amazing. She gave phenomenal service and answered all of our questions. But I was very disappointed in the food. We started with the vegan dip and the liver spread. I personally didn't try the liver spread but the others described it as lacking some added taste to cut the intense flavor of the liver. Moving on from the apps, we ordered 4 different dishes: Chicken Milanese, Swordfish, Tortellini and the Smash Burger. The swordfish came out first and the portion size did not amount to the $30 price tag that it came with. I also felt that the taste of the fish was hidden under the intense amount of flavor from the added toppings on top of it. Next we had the Smash Burger which, while it wasn't terrible, it gave the taste of plain cheese burger you could get from any other restaurant. A bit after we got the Tortellini and the Chicken Milanese. In regards to the Tortellini, it was great. I personally love pasta so I found it wonderful but we only received 8 pieces and even if we didn't share the dishes and I had gotten it on my own.. that would not have sufficed as a main entree. Also, the Chicken Milanese was amazing as well. I really think this was the only dish I couldn't complain about due to the flavor and the amount matching up to what I was anticipating when choosing this restaurant. Overall, I wouldn't go back to this place nor recommend it to anyone I know. I think they need to rethink the pricing of the menu vs the actual portions that are being delivered or heighten the flavor profile of the dishes to make you forget the lack of food on the plate. read more

Delicious food and drinks. Professional and friendly service. Cool ambiance and tasty vibes.

Love this place. Back room bar is such a vibe. Grilled oysters are delicious!!! Service is great.

The Pappardelle was phenomenal. Never had the dish before, but I was very happy I tried it. I was however, disappointed with the dessert. The custard was alright but I just wasn't a fan of the rhubarb with it. Service was solid, atmosphere was nice, and they had a fantastic bourbon selection. read more

Very dark and noisy. Food was nothing special -- just a cut above what one could make at home. Nice cocktail

Came here for a brunch with a friend just a few days before leaving Chicago. He's quite the foodie so he suggested this place. Parking -- came here on a Sunday and so parking was free, plenty of space on the street. The order: - Shakshuka: this has baked eggs, spiced tomato, roasted olives, feta with toast. This was my first time trying Shakshuka and i was excited! It lived up to the hype! I loved it, even though the tomato sauce gave me acid reflux later on. Worth it. That's how good it is. - French omelette -- this came with roasted mushrooms, herbed goat cheese and house potatoes. I love potatoes and these were yummy. It wasn't anything crazy, pretty standard omelette but it was good. Not too expensive, i find this spot for brunch to be more "manly", it has a rustic feel with all the wood and nice bar. It isn't as girly as most brunch places, I recommend it! read more

First thing, what you order matters. Dont choose the safe familiar options. This is a dinner review. Let me default them to 5 stars then go from there. We ordered four dishes from the menu. The two starters (Butternut Squash and Roasted Carrots) were amazing (their premium price was very justified, looked and tasted amazing). Then we ordered the beef burger and the Spice Roasted half chicken. The burger was solid but the fries were just ok, I was not offended by it but I would order something else if I find myself there again. The chicken dish however came on bed of fries and was mehh. Honestly didn't feel anything special and does not justify the really high price tag or the long wait for it to be ready. I am taking away 1 star for that. Atmosphere was also ok but the most annoying thing was the loud music. If you go there with someone you intend to have a conversation with, you gonna need to shout a lot for them to hear you. Our server was below average, slow to respond, forgot a few things and brought my drink late into my meal. I didn't care about that until he kinda selected a 20% gratuity for himself that he absolutely didn't deserve. That one got me hardest, I felt I am rewarding a bad server on otherwise a decent dinner experience. Taking another star for that. Lastly, I just couldn't feel at ease there, not sure if it is the server, the loud music, where we were setting or the nagging feeling they want us out so others can be seated. Not sure, but I struggled to relax. I recommend this place at least once if your ok with possibly overpaying and having to tolerate ok/bad service... just choose from the menu wisely and be adventurous. Also, had brunch there in the past, I dont recall the details but I know I thought they were something special back then. So looking forward to trying their brunch again. read more

I ordered pick up at longman and eagle and everything went smoothly. This is one of my favorite spots in the city! And I love it every time. I don't know if I wasn't as impressed with it this time around because we weren't dining in and couldn't get the full experience -- or if their menu wasn't as compelling this time around. Or maybe we ordered too many veggies when they do heavy meats the best I really really enjoyed the lamb dish. Everything else was decent but not jaw dropping read more

Good food but there are terrible options for gluten and dairy free patrons. No gluten free bun. Service was ok at best. Ambience is like every other new American restaurant. Very disappointed there isn't a gluten free bun. Why even bother asking us about our allergies when there are no alternatives for us to chose? Try harder! read more

The only reason I have to remove a star is because my fries were cold. I ordered the Sloppy Joe and it was very delicious! I didn't eat them growing up, so that is saying a lot coming from me. I tasted my friends Butternut Squash and that was also delicious. read more

Our favorite neighborhood brunch spot! The service is always excellent, and the menu is fantastic.

Two of my good friends from DC absolutely LOVE Longman & Eagle, at least for their whiskey offerings the last time we came. This most recent journey took us to their brunch menu and I have to say I am very impressed with the quality and feel from both bites to booze. First off, they were busy as heck on a Sunday morning. We decided to head to the back of the restaurant where they have an open bar area for you to relax, grab a drink, and perhaps indulge in these AMAZING donuts while waiting for your table. We got some drinks and shared their Mint Chocolate Donut and it was incredible! Creamy mint baked right into the middle... mmm. Once we were seated outside for brunch, we went straight for the food and drinks. I ordered the Duck Confit ($16) which was a little bit on the smaller side, but something about the egg whites blew me away. I had never tasted egg whites so good in my life! Combine that with some well-done duck and you've got a great dish. My friends opted for the Wild Boar Burger and the Chicken & Waffles, both of which were excellent in their own right. Both of those dishes were bigger as well so if you are a hungry bruncher, consider getting those! Our waiter really took care of us this time around too. During our meal, there were a few yellow jackets swarming around, and he did his best to deter and fend off the buzzers as they tried to get to our food. It was very much appreciated. He also offered my friend another full shot of whiskey after his original order ran short. Great service! My friend also got their souvenir cup which he loves to show off in the office. If you're a mug collector, he definitely recommends you snag one up before leaving! Longman & Eagle certainly impressed and I am definitely looking forward to coming back again. read more

Cheeseburger with duck skin mayo (sans pickle) and fries were amazing. I'd say tied for my favorite burger restaurant in Chicago (and I've been to many). Don't think I could've told you that the mayo was of the duck skin variety, but a fine addition nonetheless. Beef was perfectly salted and perfectly cooked to a medium rare. Fries, on the other hand, were not salted but accompanied by ketchup so it's all gooood. Having had a Michelin star (now only Bib Gourmand), there was a lot of hype but I'd say it meets the hype. Highly recommend if you want a quality meal in a chill, upscale bar space. Came in on a Tuesday night at 6 without a wait but I have to believe the same wouldn't be true on a weekend evening. read more

Come here for the amazing whiskey selection (think awesome range of typical and rare whiskey bottles) and the tasty food but be prepared for a wait during busy hours! The whiskey menu was massive with a ton of choices from whiskey cocktails to whiskey on the rocks or neat. This is the place to bring whiskey lovers! I tried the Old Fashion and it was delicious but strong. They really don't skimp on the whiskey here. They also have whiskey flights for those who want to explore. The food menu is concise but amazing. I came during brunch and tried the cheeseburger and the Sloppy Joe, both of which came with fresh French fries (you can taste the difference). The cheeseburger was juicy and satisfying. The boar Sloppy Joe was great in that it wasn't too heavy but had a nice texture to it helped by the small and crispy onion rings. I am usually not a huge fan of Sloppy Joe but I really liked this version. The fries were flavored well, crunchy on the outside and soft inside. I haven't had such great fries in a while. I cannot wait to come back and try other items. Everything looked delicious and prepared very well. read more

This place is awesome. I'm sure the food is probably good, but who cares when they have a bourbon collection as epic as what they have. Among the best restaurants in the city with great ambiance and excellent food. They even have breakfast gourmet donuts! A Chicago legend and for good reason. I know of few other bars that have the extensive list of whiskey selections as here. I used to live across the street before the pandemic and always found it exciting to try a new cocktail on their extensive creative list. This, coupled with a delicious brunch (and Bloody Mary) is reason for me to recommend L&E to anyone visiting the area. My go to has always been the scrambled eggs and potatoes which are phenomenal. read more

Long time patron. First time reviewer. If you don't know the history of this place I recommend you do so before bringing guests. Just first class all the way. As a bourbon connoisseur this place is almost a religious experience. My guest had a cocktail while I had one of their amazing picks of bourbon. The best thing is if you like the pick... you can now buy the bottle. My wife loves the bone marrow. Their brunch is criminally under rated. If your here in late 19 they still have an amazing Blantons pick. It's honey forward and incredible. read more

I was visiting Chicago and made Longman & Eagle my first evening meal. I started with a "Buck Ozug" - very old Barton, lime, Gosling's ginger beer, Leatherbee fernet - and a foielafel - foie gras inside falafel. Since I was dining by myself and was having trouble deciding between options, I asked my server, Nick, for recommendations. He made a great suggestion to get the roasted carrots - merguez oil, goat cheese, farro & sunflower seeds - plus a (giant!) side of hand-cut fries to soak up the remaining oil and cheese. Since Nick had steered me in the right direction for my meal, I took his recommendation again for my second drink and got the Paper Plane. A perfect execution of this standard. Finally, Nick gave me a bunch of recommendations of additional places to try and visit while I was in town and capped off my meal with a Pretty Cool ice cream bar. The appearance was surprising - I'd never had glitter on my ice cream before - and the ice cream bar itself was rich and delicious but not too heavy. read more

Long time hearer of how good Longman & Eagle is, only to eventually go in the other night. We had the broiled oysters, tortelloni, burrata&beets, and peanut butter pie. The pasta basically melts in your mouth with the brown butter sage sauce, broiled oysters have a slightly cheesy taste and panko bread crumb top, burrata and beets comes with toasted bread that was amazing to put the mixture on, and the pb pie was like pb&j ! The portions were perfect to share, it was really the perfect amount of food Great cocktails great food great service. Our server was so kind and informative, and had a relaxing presence. Really great food and prices for a 1* Michelin restaurant, located right by the logan square metro stop! There was a mini wait but they have a bar in the back you can check out while you wait. Just put your name in the front first. I really like the hipster, rustic vibe of this place- very casual and chill. Everything here is pretty much on point- cannot go wrong with anything. Beer tartare- excellent and great app to share foie gras- delicious and great app to share for my entree I got the duck- so tender and meaty- surprisingly full since they only give you two pieces but they're pretty decently sized My friend got the half chicken - the chicken is effing delicious and melts in your mouth- it's a pretty big portion of chicken so I think this entree is really worth it 10/10 would come back 10/10 would come back and bring everyone I know I don't even live in chicago, came all the way from NYC to visit! read more

Please, please don't ruin a Friday night at this place. Service very slow and waitress had a huge attitude. Appetizers were very good. For main courses ask if the head could removed from the fish, I was told a flat no. Who is the paying customer here. Ordered the fish with the head. I received a plate of mush, the fish was covered in 2 inches of fresh dill , so gross. The fish skin was under cooked and there were bones in every bit. Stunning cocktails, beautiful atmosphere, and delicious food. The staff is always friendly as well.

The outdoor patio is actually beautiful. Bright, spacious, and absolutely drenched in a gentle, dappled light filtered in from the trees that line the street. The food was excellent. Everything was well seasoned and much more interesting and diverse in flavor than I expected. The duck liver was surprisingly meaty, but had a clean flavor and paired well with the spiced apricot jam. Service was warm, welcoming, and the food came out quickly. read more

I was visiting Chicago and asked a friend who had lived there for many years before moving to LA which restaurant he missed the most. Without hesitation, he said Longman & Eagle. So I had to go. The ambiance is hipster/ lumberjack in the best of ways. I had the smoked trout brandade (with brie, pickles, and semolina baguette), and it was out-of-this-world! The rich and creaminess of the brie, the salt and brine from the pickles, the subtle smokiness of the trout, and the nice crunch of the baguette. Hot damn- this is one of my favorite dishes of all time! Now this will be the restaurant I miss most too. read more

I might need to try other offerings here for lunch or dinner, didn't feel the brunch lived up to the hype. - The French toast sounds amazing on paper, what we got was dry ass french toast with a lack of any sauce or topping to fix it. There was a brittle that came with it that was so hard my wife couldn't bite through it. The dish comes with a few ridiculous small amount of smears on the plate to dress it up that are barely useable, but in the end it feels just like dry ass bread that's doing too much. - The eggs benedict was pretty good, it's more of a different take on the dish that I felt added their style and had a good amount of layers to it. When we heard it could come with greens we were excited (thinking of delicious stewed collards or something of that nature), what the "greens" are is a small pile of bland ass lettuce. - Shrimp n Grits had a nice sauce, only three shrimp which I felt was kinda small for the price paid, and the other parts of the dish were okay. - Their grits were pretty creamy and had some nice flavor. It's a decent size enough for sharing. I feel they tried to add multiple layers to each dish and put some good effort into making it something different than you would get elsewhere. It was so so for me overall after paying $50. I do want to come back and try lunch or dinner. read more

We visited Longman & Eagle on a Monday night and hardly had to wait. It is a small place with a great atmosphere and my party of 4 didn't mind the wait for our table since we were enjoying the drinks at the bar so much. Once we were seated, we couldn't wait to order. Their menu changes frequently (how fun is that?!) so it was fun to see some of the menu options. I admit that I went pretty safe and got their cheeseburger and fries. My burger was anything but basic though, it was cooked to perfection and looked 'basic' until I tasted it. The flavor was out of this world! The spiced mayo sauce and cool favored cheese they adorned the burger with made the difference between your basic cheeseburger and a Longman & Eagle cheeseburger and I didn't even bother spoiling my fries with ketchup since they were so good just on their own. Not super hungry for a meal? If you're looking for a great spot to just grab drinks and an appetizer then the outdoor patio bar would be the perfect spot for you! Chose this place for our last night in Chicago! I got the Le Garçon Vert cocktail and it did NOT disappoint. Was refreshing and a little spicy. Please try if you come here! My husband and I shared the most amazing truffle mushrooms (that come with peas and goat cheese and I love goat cheese). He got the chicken sandwich which was spicy and crunchy, yum! I got the whitefish sandwich which tasted like a Big Mac with its sauce, while I didn't LOVE it, I dug it. The vibe of this place is extremely cute and laid back, servers were great. If you love whiskey, you should to go here. If you like whiskey you should go here. If you are on the fence about whiskey, you should go here. So much whiskey to choose from, including super rare whiskies even whiskey experts may have never tried. You can get flights of a lot of whiskies or just pick and choose. The regular cocktails are very good as well, even something basic like the old fashioned or Manhattan are very well executed. The food is incredible. The wild boar sloppy joe is delicious. The pretzel is yum. The truffle pasta is excellent if you like goat cheese, which I love. The apple and wild rice salad is good, didn't realize it was going to be a salad but it was good anyway. Basically everything here is worth the long wait. We waited an hour. But we went to the bar in the back and got some drinks and snacks and found a place to sit while we waited. Probably closer to 3.5 stars. Longman & Eagle has a casual/low-key atmosphere that belies its former Michelin star status but was perfect for me looking for a place to eat by myself after getting into O'Hare early in the morning (I was able to just stroll in and grab a seat at the bar). I ended up getting the wild boar sloppy joe since I couldn't decide between the breakfast items, and I knew the wild boar sloppy joe was popular (thanks Yelp). The wild boar sloppy joe was good. The ground meat had a game-y taste as expected and the mushiness of the meat was complemented well with the crispness of the fried onions and sage (which I wasn't expecting to be fried; it was kinda nice chewing on these like fries haha). The fries were nicely fried (it's great when they're well-done), but I didn't really taste the jalapeño flavor they were supposed to have. The presentation of the dish (as you can see in my picture) was top notch. The other big plus was that the price was quite reasonable ($16 before tax/tip). So why the low-ish score? While the wild boar sloppy joe was something new and fairly delicious, I don't know if I would pick it over these basic ass cheeseburgers with an over easy egg added that I used to eat in college. Maybe I'm just basic haha. I'm sure my opinion of Longman & Eagle would improve on a second visit. Based on the conversations the bartender was having with other people at the bar, I can tell that this gastropub is one of those places you treasure as a local. Maybe I'll ninja edit this review after the next time I come :) read more
