Nettare is such a cool spot for a date night. The ambiance is intimate, modern, and cozy without feeling too loud. The cocktails were beautifully crafted. We tried the Whiskey Smash Slushie and the Kyr Royal and they were quite unique to the taste. Definitely order the bread board. It was my favorite. It came with toasted sourdough and seeded crackers, served alongside a rich mushroom pate, slices of peri peri salami, cave aged triple cream mellage, pickled vegetables, whole-grain mustard, and blueberry jam. I came here first thing in the morning to treat myself to some delicious lattes. I had heard they even had latte flights, but I didn't see that anywhere on their menu, so that was my first bit of disappointment. We were going to order at the counter, but we were offered paper menus and told we could take a seat in the front area if we'd like to have our coffees there. I ordered the Black Walnut & Honey latte ($7) that was really mild on flavor. My husband had the Crème Brulee latte ($10), which was better but noticeably smaller. The Cinnamon Roll ($8) was fine, but it wasn't worth $8, and it wasn't heated all the way through. Unfortunately, I didn't like the Confit Mushroom Egg & Cheese Sandwich ($6) at all. It wasn't hot, and the smell was a bit off-putting. Despite a lackluster experience, the real disappointment hadn't sunk in yet. When I got home and glanced at our receipt, I realized that they had charged a mandatory additional 20% service fee. I at first thought my husband had unexpectedly left a large tip, but I checked their menu again and saw that it says "For dine in service only: When your bill arrives, it will have a 20% service charge added to the subtotal. This we use to compensate our staff as they deserve for their exceptional work. As such no additional gratuity is expected." I have of course seen this practice done at full service restaurants, but I wasn't expecting this for a café visit simply because we chose to sit and drink our coffees there instead of taking them to go. It was a bit of an awkward space as it was, and we were still going up to the counter to get our food and drinks and carried our plates up when we were done. read more

So so cute. Came here for brunch for my birthday after wanting something small but cute and it didn't destroy the pockets. Everything was gorgeous. The place, the food, and the drinks. I saw some commentary about slow service prior to going and it was a bit but nothing too extreme at all and the staff was very sweet. I will be back for their burger that my friends tried and loved. Came in for the cafe and it was fantastic! The cafe space has a little table with about six seats. If you're planning on stopping in, I wouldn't recommend planning a "sit and enjoy my coffee" because of the limited seating. The barista was super nice and very helpful. We opted to get the latte flight with their: carrot cake latte, the timberfall latte, and a japanese tea. The latte flight comes with two lattes and one tea. All of them were so so yummy and fantastic. The espresso in the carrot cake had a unique flavor to it. The timberfall latte was not too sweet like you'd expect - al the flavors blended really well together. The japanese tea was made like a london fog and it made the tea feel well balanced. We also opted to get the breakfast sandwich and another breakfast sandwich that had a lamb patty. The lamb patty was perfectly seasoned and we enjoyed a different take on sausage. Their regular breakfast sandwich has a fantastic jalapeno jam. I can't wait to come back! Side note: I came in last year during restaurant week for their dinner service (pics attached) - it was SO GOOD. Everything was so fresh and delicious! It was good, although I had a cocktail that was quite possibly the worst thing I've ever drank. My friend & I ordered it from the specials so I can't remember the name. They were nice enough to make us a different drink. That was a year ago & another tale. We decided to try brunch this time. We walked in without a reservation. The host seemed confused, said there wasn't room in the dining area, but said we could eat up front at a communal table. We said that's fine but we'd rather wait if we can for the dining room. People came in & got seated. Then, another couple came in without a reservation & they said, let me check. Wait, what? They sat them, so we asked again, they then offered bar/counter seating. Yes, we didn't know that was an option. Very strange. We ordered lattes that were delicious. My husband got a breakfast sandwich. He loved it. I ordered a breakfast pastry that was in the front display case, he brought out a scone instead. Very nicely brought the correct one & gave me the scone instead a to go box free of charge. This review is a couple months overdue, but back in late October, my partner and I enjoyed a night out at Nettare. Dinner was delicious for the most part. We loved the stracciatella (with pears!), the campanelle, & the steak au poivre. The sweet potato was good but overpriced for what it was and no longer bearing any resemblance to a sweet potato, which was a little disappointing. The mushroom pate was ok, but I would not order it again. Service was ok. It was loud and hard to hear my partner, but impossible to hear our server who was so soft-spoken I had to ask him to repeat or have my partner (who was closer) repeat. I would highly recommend Nettare to friends and family when they are looking for a cute cafe to visit in the neighborhood. We were able to be seated within ten minutes without a reservation on a Sunday around noon. The service was helpful, but not annoying so we felt relaxed and not rushed. The ambience was moody cocktail lounge but well lit thanks to the skylight. It was perfect for brunch. The latte flight was fun to experience, but two of three drinks were lukewarm. I would order a full size latter next time. The breakfast sandwich was phenomenal and a must try. We also enjoyed the short rib "poutine". It was massive and we brought home half the dish. I recommend sharing it and not getting an extra order of potatoes. The tip is included as a 20% service charge and I really like knowing that the staff are getting "tipped" well. We hadn't and we had the reservation still up on OpenTable. Sheer luck occurred and someone canceled while they werefiguring out what to do, and we got a table. But midway through our meal they had us move to a different table so they could use our table to accommodate a larger party. This was really annoying but we obliged them. Our server was great. I don't recall his name, but he had a birth mark near his eye, and he was friendly, funny and made the evening more enjoyable. The restaurant itself has a really good vibe and is very cute. The entrance is cool and has a bunch of booze you can buy and take home. The drinks were pretty so so. We had to send one back it was so bad. The food was pretty good, but a couple dishes did nothing for me (chickpea fritters for instance). Other dishes were too small m. There were 4 of us and we ordered the venison as one of our dishes. There were 3 tiny pieces on the plate. Like the circumference of a quarter and maybe an inch long. For $40 that's ridiculous. On the flip side, the chicken was a good sized portion and easy to share. We ordered the bread and butter. We got a huge piece of butter and 4 tiny pieces of bread. So not enough bread to use all the butter. Can't say I've ever encounter before. The gem salad was really tasty as was the cheese plate. Dessert's were so-so. The donuts had a weird flavor too them because they were cooked in duck fat or something. The chocolate dish also had a weird flavor because of the cookies on them. Still don't know what it was. I wouldn't order either again. Tipping policy - 20% auto gratuity. I'm fine with this. But the spiel about no additional tip is expected but is appreciated is unneeded. Either choose an auto gratuity or let the customer decide. Don't go hinting that you want more than 20%. It's really distasteful. So many good restaurants in Chicago, I definitely won't be rushing back here. read more

The sandwich also took 25 minutes to cook even though there wasn't anyone in the restaurant. What I thought was really weird though was we asked to sit down at a table and they told us no but there was only two people in the restaurant. We had a 10:30 reservation for 2 and were seated right away and had great service throughout the meal! The breakfast sandwich is filling and the jam on it so flavorful. The sweet milk bun also really ties the flavors together well! The potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a really good giardiniera aioli for dipping; these were a large order great for a shared side with the table. There were lots of options for lattes or espresso drinks or just plain good brewed coffees - we had the black walnut latte and the timberfall and both were tasty! The coffee cake was moist and soft with an orange zest that tied into the cake's flavors really well; a perfect last bite to the meal! The space is artistically pleasing, with beautiful décor and tons of natural light that give it such a warm, inviting vibe. We tried their coffee flight, great for those who enjoy sweeter, milk based coffees. As someone who prefers black coffee, it wasn't my favorite, but I could see the appeal. For food, we ordered the beef fat fried potatoes, the breakfast sandwich, and the smoked trout. Everything was above average, but the standout for me was definitely the breakfast sandwich. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had, but it was pretty great and definitely memorable. Overall, this is one of the better brunch spots in West Town. We had the bacon burnt ends, green beans, latkes, maritozzi, ice cream, and gooey butter cake - best I ever had! G&T tasted so good, my friend had the Irish coffee, and the Blue Velvet cocktail is 5 stars! Literally. Get that! Loved the bacon and gooey butter cake so much! Definitely coming back for that soon and to try more dishes. Special shout out on this design, I love me some breeze blocks and plant material! The greenery is hip and welcoming. My wife and I were immediately greeted with a rude and dismissive attitude by the host upon arrival. We were told there would be a 25-minute wait, which was fine. I politely asked if there were any seats available at the bar, and the host responded aggressively with "NO" so we moved out her way and waited for our text notification. When our table was ready, she curtly said "come on," which startled both of us due to how unprofessional it felt. While being walked to the table, we noticed several open bar seats and asked again if we could sit there instead. Once more, the response was an abrupt and dismissive "No" with a disrespectful tone. The consistent attitude from her and lack of basic courtesy were enough for us to decide to leave. We chose not to spend our money at an establishment where customers are treated with such disrespect. Dined here about a year ago and the food was fine, but we all (4 of us) each got sick right after dining here for brunch. We are pretty sure it was the aioli, which we all ate with the bread. It was really dank (in a good way) but you could tell it was warm. Called the restaurant to let them know and they said "well the flu is going around." The hits at nettare were fantastic but the misses were also pretty bad. we did the tasting menu with the drink pairing and I would say it was very worth the price. it was a lot of food and they were incredibly generous with the alcohol. my favorites by far were the skate wing and the burnt ends. our server was very friendly and it was cool that all the alcohol came from Michigan. We had a good(ish) experience, but overall it was a bit hit and miss: Positives: The vibe and look of the restaurant is exceptional. Whoever designed it should honestly get an award. The bar is beautiful, every fixture is meticulously picked out and the mirrors and sky lights make the space appear bar bigger than it actually is. The service was great from start to finish and there were a couple of very nice dishes (the broth with the walleye and the burnt ends were a hit). Negatives: They had a few slightly obnoxious "rules". To make a reservation you need to add your credit card and you get charged $30 a couple for not showing up. You expect this at high end, Michelin Star restaurants but given we booked this table less than 24 hours in advance and there wasn't a soul in the restaurant when we showed up, it's a bit excessive. They also include 20% gratuity to EVERY bill. You order a $100 bottle of wine, you pay $20 for them to open it. I tip 20% as standard but it should be a choice. We spent $210 on wine, meaning we tipped $42 for the privilege of having two bottles opened. They note on their menu they do this so they can "pay their staff" but like all businesses, that's your responsibility, not the customers. Having a fixed 20% tip for a table of two isn't a good look. Our main dish (the chicken) was so burned it was inedible and completely black. The table next to us got the same thing that was cooked perfectly so it was clearly an error on the kitchen. The fact they served something even looking that bad was surprising. They also didn't have a single bottle of red wine on the menu that wasn't from Michigan (which was odd as it's not a "Michigan Restaurant"). I've been to many Michigan wineries and there are some reasonable bottles, but that this price/level, you expect a few more options. Throwing one Californian and one French bottle on the menu, will go a long way! Overall not what we hoped, but the vibe and service were good enough for us to give it another shot! read more

Came here on a Saturday night with one other person and unfortunately, the experience was far below our expectation. We read the Yelp reviews beforehand and had such high hopes, but overall, it fell very short. For the price we paid, I expected a lot better. DO NOT DO THE CHEF'S MENU! Just pick the items yourself. Chef's menu is basically just a La carte items + additional 15% charge. Save yourself some money and just choose items yourself. We had the chef's menu which for 2 people was very underwhelming. We have been to many other restaurants with tasting menu/chef menu options. From my experience, you almost always get to try more items from the menu, often with smaller portions. Here, it was same portion as if you were to order it a la carte, but we only got to try 4 appetizers/small plates and 1 entree between 2 people. If we were to just order these items by itself, we would have saved almost $20. We asked our waiter who told us that the chef's menu's value is the regular items + 15% extra. Why am I paying 15% more just for someone to pick food for me? This didn't feel like a chef's menu or a tasting menu; it felt like I just got charged more for being indecisive and hoping I'd get to try smaller bites of more food. Anyways, this is what we got from the chef's menu: Koji butter w/ grilled focaccia: 4 pieces of bread and a decent amount of butter. We were educated that the koji butter would have a more umami taste, but really just tasted like butter. We could trick ourselves into tasting more of the umami if we really tried. Bread was nice and soft though. 2/5 Chickpea Fritters: 4 pieces of what looked and tasted like a french fry. Spread and mustard with it didn't add much. 2/5 Rutabaga: first time having a rutabaga so I do not feel qualified to comment on it. Tasted like a Brussels sprout with the texture of a potato. Ricotta Gnocchi: decent gnocchi that came with maybe 3-4 slices of prosciutto and 3-4 pieces of mushroom. Nothing much else special. 2/5 Walleye: this was our first and only real entree and protein and unfortunately was one piece of fish shared among two people. We were hoping to be able to try at least another entree, but it was just the walleye. 3/5 Dessert was key lime ice cream and ricotta doughnuts. Both tasted like they sound. 3/5 Again, my biggest complaint is the chef's menu just doesn't make sense. We are served the same portions as the a la carte, but if I just ordered everything a la carte, I save almost $20. Why do the chef's menu then? There truly is no benefit to it. Plus I then get charged a default 20% tip that is included in the bill. I have no problem with this, but I wouldn't then also expect an extra 15% from the chef's menu essentially for someone to choose what I get. We were excited to try Nettare in West Town. It has a fun casual aesthetic and the host was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. We were disappointed in our experience with our server. She seemed to be defensive when we had questions regarding bourbon and wine options. Two people at our table were concerned that they may have offended her because of the way she interacted with us. She was not professional or warm or friendly. They serve what they refer to as "local wines and spirits". The wine offerings from Michigan and NY left much to be desired and we found them to be disappointing. Our table ordered several things from their small menu to try. Service was slow and the timing between dishes was off. There was really nothing we ordered that was a stand out. From the steak to the eggplant, our entire group found the preparation to be a good attempt at creativity but lacking in flavor. The steak was very fatty.
