I visit Bend at least 3 times a year. I love trying new coffee roaster when I travel. This is the first time I ventured from my usual local spot. The shop itself is cute. They do sell plants, which was another reason why I came. (The plants are over priced IMHO). I tried the Lemon Latte ( love everything lemon) with an extra shot of espresso. It was okay. You know the feeling when you pick up a cup of latte and it's heavy, you just know it's not made properly?! This was the case here. Really heavy with the milk and tasted way too milky. Even after the extra shot of espresso. Here's to hoping the beans I purchased are better than the latte that I ordered. read more

This spot has become very popular, so don't be surprised if you are lining up outside the door, but there is usually enough seating for everyone and they open up a large glass garage door for more air flow. In the afternoon you are able to purchase wine and enjoy a few different options they have especially picked out. It is a family friendly spot, enough power outlets and great alternative people too. What's Good: For those that like the taste of espresso, the Cortado was absolutely perfect. Excellent espresso with a splash creaminess from the half and half. If you want more of the espresso taste, Machiatto is your bet (it's not the fake Starbucks version) which has a lower volume of milk instead of h&h. They carry pastries from the best bakeries in Bend, including Foxtail, whose doors closed for the time being. The Croissant was delicious. This little slice of Hipster Heaven hs tucked away in an alley, around the corner from a coffee shop I discovered on my last visit to Bend. As the name implies, it stands as a Lone Pine, and I was excited to find it and even more excited to try the coffees they produce. As roasters, they know the uniquely individual expression of each variety they serve, and I was very much looking forward to learning about their roasting philosophy and tasting the end result. As I opened the doors and walked in off the windy alley, the warmth of the space, dulcet mellow tones of acoustic guitar and vibrant vocals engulfed me. I didn't know the song playing, but it seemed perfect, and as I made my way to the counter, I was eager to find out what they were serving. I saw the roaster right behind the counter, watched them filling retail bags, saw wholesale coffee leaving in large quantities, and my excitement grew. I looked over the menu, glanced at the jars behind the counter, and tried hard to get an idea of what types of coffee they were pouring today. When I finally reached the counter, I asked "What's on espresso?" "A blend and a single origin. Blend is mostly Ethiopian and the Single is from Guatemala." Easily some of the most generic responses I've ever received, offering no idea as to the flavors or differences, and expressing no pride in the product they're serving. I asked for a doppio, aka double espresso, and a pour over of their choice. In response, I was asked to confirm what a doppio was. Needless to say, I was really bummed. When my pour over was ready, it didn't even come with an explanation as to what it was, and in the end, tasted pretty non-descript and boring. The espresso, on the other hand, had rich roast chocolate notes, with some peanut butter, balanced by a light acidity. I really enjoyed it but unfortunately I don't know more than that. As I drank my coffee and looked around the space, and everything began to make sense. The acoustic music, skinny jeans, vests, beanies, eclectic art, and seeming disinterest in new customers all added up to one scenario... Was I in hipster hell or just a skit from Portlandia? I couldn't decide. This shop came with a strong recommendation from a trusted friend, and I think I know why she loves it so much. But for me, I don't think it's up my alley, though Id gladly try their coffee somewhere else that is willing to tell me a little something about it. read more

So I'm searching for Lone Pine Coffee and I see bright red and yellow paint on a red brick wall along Tin Pan Alley proclaiming, "Happiness" this way, so I know I'm close. The easiest way to describe their location is to head for Thump Coffee, then turn down the alley. I was first introduced to their excellence at Sparrow Bakery, which convinced me I had to visit the coffee shop myself. For me it is a bit of a dead heat between Lone Pine and Backporch Coffee Roasters. This is a smaller scale, more casual operation (they are in an alley after all). The space is fun and comfortable for adults and kids and the staff was quite fun and engaging. I even hope the graffiti stays. read more

This is down the street from where I work so I decided to give it a try. I normally go to Thump, Bellatazza, or Great Harvest but I thought I'd try a new place. It's really cute inside. Priced similarly to other coffee shops in Bend. The drink was good as was the pastry I got. The employees could be a bit more friendly. When I smiled at any of them, no smile back. When I thanked them, it was like they didn't even hear me (no acknowledgment whatsoever). They weren't that busy, and plenty of people working. Definitely a different vibe than other coffee shops in downtown. read more

We visited Lone Pine for some tea one night, and the service was excellent, personable, natural. The tea was delicious too (Metolius teas). We returned the next morning for coffees and the place was packed, but the service remained the same: warm and with the same sense of urgency to keep the line moving without ignoring anyone. Meh. Nice looking place and cool layout. We tried 3 drinks including a cortado (my benchmark) and they were all watery. The food items were sparse and short on flavor. The worst part was the bored and indifferent staff. If you can't muster some friendliness for caffeine seekers then you should get a job feeding boilers in a middle school basement. read more
