This was my first visit on a sat night. The place wasn't crowded and we were seated as soon as we walked in. The service from beginning to end was good. They give you complimentary bread, which I've had at an Italian restaurant but not bad. I think it should actually be platanos or Yucca lol. Anyway I ordered the Pollo Saltado( pictured). The flavor was good, chicken soft and the white rice wasn't bad. I added some of that green hot sauce they have but it wasn't very spicy on this day. If you've never had this, it's a Peruvian customary dish with a mix of bell peppers, tomatoes, green onions and french fries. My only complaint is that I ordered The Yucca A La Huanciana appetizer and for four strips of Yucca is was $9. Very expensive! Anyway try the place out for yourself, not bad. read more

We had an hour to kill before picking up our cake order at Portos which turned out to be a good thing. Open my yelp app and lo-and-behold Lola's Peruvian Restaurant popped up on screen. Peruvian for dinner sounded good so we decided to give it try. The place is actually not too far from Portos on Brand Blvd, only a few blocks down the street which made it convenient. Parking is available in back lot and surrounding street. We came in from the back entrance and were surprised by the classy formal setting - dark wood tables dressed in white linen. Place is small and has great charm. Low ambiance lighting provides a nice romantic atmosphere, perfect for couples, small groups or any occasion. We got started on complimentary breadstick that looked like cute little submarines and accompanied with two types of dipping sauces. Unfortunately, I didn't care too much for their sauces. It was too spicy and lacked flavor. Bread was good though. We ordered the lomo saltado ($17), tallarin salta vegetable ($15) and bistek fettucine huancaina ($21) which were both excellent. Lomo Saltado was substantial and enough for sharing. The sautéed strips of beef were tender, vegetables cooked to perfection and home fries lightly crisp. Best Lomo Saltado I had in long time. Love the flavor and presentation, not too greasy, everything looked fresh and vibrant. Bistek (steak) was superb and cooked on par. Nice rich cream sauce on pasta and very flavorful. Definitely need to take a nap after eating this. They also have nice wine selection, but we settled for their local draft beer on tap. The Lagunitas IPA was refreshing. Prices were in mid $12-20 range, portions were huge and definitely worth it. Service was fantastic, staff were attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. End of the world my ass. Had the world ended as the Mayans predicted, this meal would have been my last. Thank Quetzacotal it was not because Lola's was not impressive and I apologize for referencing the Mayans and not the Incans since Lola's is Peruvian food. Whatever. Lola's is a sit-down restaurant that looks ghetto from the outside, but feels like a steakhouse for old white people on the inside despite the photos of avocados and Machu Picchu because it is dimly lit. I mean is it just me or are all the old-fashioned steakhouses really fucking dark? Anyhow, Lola's tries to be a fancy restaurant more akin to El Pollo Inka than Mario's. However, unlike the aforementioned Peruvian restaurants, they charge nearly twice as much for less food that simply does not taste as good. When a server notices you walk in from Brand Boulevard and you are finally seated, Lola's provides complimentary bread and two dipping sauces. One was an aji sauce (green) and one was a mayo-chili sauce (yellowish green). The aji sauce had a slight kick and the mayo-chili sauce was interesting and reminded me of wasabi. I just wish that Lola's could have provided bigger portions for the sauces because unlike other Peruvian restaurants where they have the sauce on the side of the table, Lola's brings tiny dipping containers where the sauces are refilled too few and far between. As for the main course, the wife and I ordered one lomo saltado and one saltado de mariscos. Lomo saltado is the most well-known dish of Peru and it's literally a fusion of indigenous Peruvian cuisine married with Asian flavors. It consists of strips of sirloin stir-fried in a marinade of soy sauce and other spices with potato wedges, tomatoes and red onions that is served with white rice. Saltado de mariscos is basically the same thing as lomo saltado except the beef is replaced with a seafood medley of shrimp, mussels, and squid. Taste-wise the flavors were okay, but I felt both dishes were on the salty side. Perhaps Lola's needs to capitalize salt in SALTado. Constant water refills as well as Inca Kola were needed. Service-wise they definitely needed more than two servers for a Friday dinner service. Trying to get refills and attempting to pay are two of my many pet peeves. But the latter is what I hate the most... I mean I just fucking hate restaurants where you can't leave! Is it so hard to give me the bill and bring back my credit card within 5 minutes? Especially when the world is ending? So to recount, one small-portioned lomo saltado dish, one small-portioned saltado de mariscos dish, and one Inca Kola came out to over $40. All I know is, if the world is going to end again, I won't be coming back to Lola's when there are better tasting and cheaper options out there. I ordered from their lunch menu and the dishes are huge! The servers are very nice, the place was not that big but very clean. I ordered the following: - Ceviche De Pescado ($8): very good, lots of fish, served with Peruvian corn. If you order it spicy, they will add small pieces of habanero peppers. We ordered Saltado take out and when we arrived home and looked at it we were saddened by what we saw. cubes of air fried potatoes and meat. we returned it and told them this is not Peruvian cuisine. we are from Peru and would like people to know that this is not what Peruvian cuisine looks or tastes like. This place was dark and there was just one other table on their way out. An inauspicious sign as I started the evening with a sangria which was delivered with a boba size straw. I guess it was meant to suck up the fruit. It tasted more like a spritzer than anything. As an appetizer, the Calamari Frito was a fairly large dish. At least it was good. I had plenty and there was more than enough to take home too. The shrimp were smaller than you'd expect in the Saltado de camarones and without the sauce the fries and vegetables had very little flavor. I think I enjoyed their bread with butter more than anything. Street parking can be tough and service was slow. Meh. Nothing special here. read more

Yet again, the groupon+curiousity combo brought me to this place. I had the peruvian style paella and the lomo saltado. For the price, even with the groupon, I wasn't satisfied at all. The peruvian beers were great though. Atmosphere was decent, and the service is pretty good. Other than that, I just wouldn't come back here again. For a lomo saltado, I prefer the greasier, heartier, counterpart at Mario's. As for the paella, yes, it was filled with seafood and you ARE getting your money's worth. I just wasn't too excited about the flavors. That's just me, but I think other people might enjoy it here. It's not about the dishes, cause as long as you like em, you're safe here. My family and I came here after looking at Yelp reviews. We ordered a variety of food and drinks to try a little bit of everything. My favorites were the Peruvian corn appetizer, tallarin saltado con camarones, and ceviche. Their complimentary bread was also really good and we kept asking for more. I think their prices are more than reasonable for the portions they give. I would like to stress that I have never encountered such friendly and sweet wait staff before. Our waitress was extremely helpful with her recommendations and remained attentive to our table the entire night even though the restaurant was full. Several members of our group were from out of town, and they all could not stop raving about the food. I feel so happy to have discovered this gem of a restaurant. 4 stars for the food, but 3 stars for the service. If you're in the mood for Peruvian, Lola's is a great pick but make sure you have plenty of time to dine. The ceviche is fresh and our main entrees were tasty. However our server got my order wrong and by the time my dish was ready, others were already done eating. We had to cancel another order as well, since it was taking so long. The server was apologetic and was kind to offer comped dessert but the experience was a bit stressful. Wayyyyyyyy more delicious than what I had expected. My bf and I love trying new places, and the the more authentic, the better. Menu has a bit of everything...chicken, seafood, beef, pork, and vegetarian as well. The portions are quite good (I ordered the Seco plate and made 3 meals out of it). The calamari is the best I've ever had...something about the onion/mint topping they put over it. So flavorful! The service was great. Someone greeted us immediately and we didn't have to wait long for our food. Our waiter checked on us several times, knew the menu well, and all suggestions were amazing! Not a fan of the food here. I came with a friend one evening and we were seated pretty quickly. It took a bit for the servers to get to our orders and then took quite a while for our food to come. We ordered the tallarin saltado (linguini pasta with vegetables) and the jalea de mariscos (battered seafood with salsa and tartar sauce). They both sounded like promising dishes but we're both very lackluster. The linguine dish was extremely salty. It tasted very unhealthy and the chef definitely did not take care to season the dish correctly. Very rarely have I gone to a restaurant and gotten a dish that came out that salty. It was really difficult to eat and was so salty it made my mouth numb. On the other hand, the battered seafood dish was not worth the $26 price point at all. This dish was made up of mostly calamari and very few pieces of the other seafoods mentioned. Furthermore, the "salsa" was just some raw onions and there was no tartar sauce. It was just an overly fried and tasteless dish that I would not recommend to anyone. The only thing that I actually liked was the dipping sauce that came with the bread they gave our table in the beginning of the night. However, that's not nearly enough for me to ever consider returning. Really do not recommend this spot! read more

The ceviche and the lomo soltado are the reasons I return...and the little rolls with dipping sauce are delicious I'd give it five stars, but I've worked in restaurants and the back of house is a little bit less sanitary (upon every visit) than makes me fully comfortable. Never had an issue, just keeps me from giving a full five stars as I notice it every time I come here. I was a carpet and tile cleaner in restaurants and kitchens like these, so it's just that little thing that takes the whole experience from a five to a four.
