Enchiladas carnitas
Michael N.

We were in town and craving for some delicious Mexican food. I called in for takeout, but the phone kept going straight to voicemail. I had no other choice, but to order once I arrive and hoping there wasn't a long line. Once arrived, luckily there was no line. I normally would order a burrito, but wasn't as hungry since we had a late lunch. I decided to order Asada Fries Beef and my wife got the Enchiladas carnitas. The cashier was talking to fast so it was a little difficult to understand her. (name on receipt was Juan). Asada Fries Beef - I enjoyed the meat, but not so much with the fries. Not as crispy and too dried for me. Enchiladas carnitas - My wife didn't really enjoyed it. It was too sour for her and the presentation was sloppy. I wish I could had gone with a burrito and tacos for my wife.

Two cheese one shredded beef enchiladas plate. Really good. Thank you :)

I came here based off the reviews I read. They were not wrong. The food is delicious and authentic. You can tell it's all "home made" fresh and made with love. I got enchiladas plate, some tacos, and a burrito. Everything is yummy. To the guy who took my order, made my food, and packed my food to go... thank you. Everything was organized, napkins, utensils and extra yummy salsa. I def have a new place to eat when I'm in the area. So good. Super happy.

Tlayuda

Solid Mexican take out restaurant. Parking lot available. Ordering online adds a few dollars, so I recommend calling on the phone to save a few bucks. Lots of tasty options with burritos, enchiladas, etc. I got the tlayuda, which was a tasty Mexican pizza. Will come back for the mole. Friendly staff. Credit card payment available. Pay extra for the chips and salsa to go. Reasonable prices. Recommend for a quick bite!

Chips and Guacamole

This place is great! A lot of variety, and cheap prices. Really enjoyed the chips and guacamole. Also, loved the mole chicken enchiladas. Tried their green smoothie drink, it could use a little more sugar in my opinion. Ended the meal with a flan, which was delicious.

Chicken enchiladas with green sauce. Sooo good.

This was our first time here. We were in the area and looking for a nice cozy little Mexican restaurant, and boy howdy did we find it. I ordered the chicken enchilada combo and my boyfriend ordered the asada burrito. The first bite I took was the rice (I always judge a Mexican restaurant by the quality of the rice) and oh my god I wanted to cry, it was so good. Then I had a bite of beans--almost cried. Finally I had some of my enchiladas and I literally laughed out of joy because the food was so damn tasty. I'd come back here ANY time. I can't believe how yummy everything was.

Chiles Rellenos more like vomit

I had a delivery. The food was DISGUSTING. the chiles rellenos were too spicy and the chiles were no where to be found. The cheese was a piece of goo. My order was $66.0

The Black Cow Cafe has been part of my life since my college years, so when I came here now, it was always filled with nostalgia and a slowed pace over a calming meal. Opened in 1994 by a father and son, they embodied the community's "Main Street USA" vibe with a neighborhood diner where everyone knew each other, and you were served a soothing homemade meal during breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Did this cafe leave me with warm memories of the past, or did I cower from time's inevitable changes!? PURCHASE(S) Green Milan 16floz Drink ($7.95): My body needed something "green" and this sounded interesting. I thought it would be one of those health smoothies back in the 80s, but instead a frothy hazy light drink with a light grassy aroma and a middling leafy flavor. I didn't dislike it, but I wouldn't order it again. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=Uo_FrA9ezkxhIn4VnwEVtQ Vegetarian Omelette w/Country Potatoes & Sourdough Toast ($18.95): Made with avocado, cheddar cheese, mushrooms, Ortega chiles, pico de gallo, salsa ranchera, spinach, and topped with sour cream, an omelette was also on my eating bingo card. This smallish portion on the healthier side was packed with fresh goodness and fluffy eggs. The country potatoes were plentiful, nicely seasoned, but lacked the outer crisp I liked. The large sourdough toast with creamy butter and preserves rounded out the meal well. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=vDf51dNgOCoyIaPX_AOvrw Fish & Chips w/Coleslaw & Muffin ($17.95): Made with tempura fried Icelandic cod served with jalapeno tartar sauce, and Hawaiian coleslaw, the three fish pieces were crunchy, hot, and thick but needed more seasoning so the tarter sauce came in handy (no vinegar!). The coleslaw lacked much flavor and moisture, and the muffin was moist and warm. This one could've been better. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=dsLbeFauDvvnvXiA6IZhBA [ONION RINGS/STRAWS/STRINGS ALERT - 4.0 of 5.0 STARS] Substitute Onion Rings ($3.95): I replaced the french fries with these, a good side portion with many rings of different sizes, these were hot, dark golden browned, crunchy, and had a tendency to crumble when bitten into while the onion ring (not sweet Maui) pulled out at times. Although they were somewhat oily, they were good, and dipping sauce wasn't needed. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=hBUiwmcGa-pKcL8pRPQipg German Chocolate Cake Slice ($5.95): Solid, thick, and a rich chocolatey flavor, the coconut maple frosting was outstanding! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=WracW1NRal1uz_2MeLeqlw Peach Cobbler Pie Slice ($5.95) + Vanilla Ice Cream Scoop ($1.25): A flat-looking thing with a ton of fresh peaches that bursted with cinnamon and spices, but the crust was lifeless. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=iBVwJ4BeHE_DcX1FHAP7qA SERVICE We were greeted by friendly young hosts, seated immediately, given menus, and shortly afterwards our orders were placed. Everything arrived within ten minutes, and we were checked on periodically. All was good - thank you! PARKING (Varied: FREE this instance): I found a spot in the large public lot directly above the restaurant off of Florencita Dr. Otherwise, there were metered spots along the main drag of Honolulu Ave. and all surrounding side streets- 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A packed layout filled with tables inside and along the front sidewalk, the decor was as if grandmothers united and gave it a country farm house appeal https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=HWq31BkepPCR8uWcUf4Gtw with odds-and-ends and knickknacks. There was a coffee bar and dessert counter https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=xA7i9XBuwKW-6sfh0n-vUQ with more space. A minimal amount of natural lighting came in through the front glass windows and doors while a mix of recessed and track electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were no TVs nor could I recall any background music over all of the loud conversations. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL It was nice to revisit The Black Cow Cafe, and hoped to return soon. The menu was packed, the food was good, the prices were comparable, and the service was busy but manageable. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $69.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

We finally had the opportunity to go there for lunch yesterday and it was indeed fantastic! Such a lovely little place!! The inside would be nice for a cozy dinner but since we were there for lunch we chose to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine and people watch. (Great location for people watching!) The food and service were both great. I ordered the Chicken Caesar Wrap and my husband had the LA Cheesesteak Sandwich. Both were delicious. The wrap was different because it was made with balsamic dressing rather than ranch and had croutons inside which gave it a crunch. The cheesesteak sandwich had nice flavor kick to it. We both had french fries and they were cooked perfectly!! Sooooo good!! We will definitely add this place to our go-to list!!

(My husband had the steak and mushroom penne, friends had the Chimchurri steak and the wedge salad) The negatives: I had the shrimp risotto and found it blah. The serving was very small - i feel like American portions are often obscenely large (and don't like that), but this was much smaller than average and I was still hungry after eating it. The flavor was ok, but nothing to write home about. And the shrimp were very small - what my husband and I call "bait" shrimp. Not the large shrimp you usually get at a nice restaurant. Since i was still hungry, I ordered a cobbler. It was fine, but not great. Texture was a bit strange - not traditional. Probably won't come back. The food is just not that interesting. It's like the kind of food you'd eat at a Midwestern buffet restaurant.

We thought he was a new employee because he had no clue what he was doing. He had NO personality no interest in general. When he first came to our table he didn't say hello or offer us appetizers or a cocktail. He asked for our dinner order. We ordered the fajita quesadilla and a combo plate. Daniel brought me the wrong taco; the taco was mostly lettuce and cheese very little meat ~ I was surprised because when I ordered this in the past it was excellent and done right (Not his fault tho he did write down my taco order incorrectly). He never came back to our table to check on us. When we were done we asked for a box because we had a lot of food left. He looked at it and brought us a tiny box. What was he thinking?? We asked the bus boy for another and he brought us the correct size. It was hard to get Daniels attention; we tried a few times to flag him down but he wasn't looking at us. We watched him a few different times throughout our time there, to see how he was with the other tables. We came to the conclusion that he looked like a fish out of water. Maybe he was overwhelmed even though the restaurant was a little more than half full last night at 5:30. Then he brought us our check while we were still eating! I told him I wanted to order dessert. Again, he had no clue what he was doing. I suggest the management take a look at this review and address this issue with him. Our experiences here have always been great, been coming for years. We love this place but we would never have Daniel as our server again.
