First review of 2021 has to go to Loess Spa! I came here with my bestie on 01/03/2021. We got our temperatures checked at the door and our body workers were wearing masks. One of my NY Resolutions is better self care which in my book means a massage every month. Well to kick it off I thought let's go all out and do this Korean Spa thing I hear so much about. I'm a body worker myself so I asked my colleagues and they recommended Loess. So let's break it down. 1. The prices are completely affordable. You might initially get sticker shock, but if you understand the industry, trust me when I say this is affordable. My bestie and I went for the most expensive package which at this time was $180 before tax and tip. What that included was the following... - Korean Body Scrub - Foot Massage - Herbal Body Pack with "Gold Wrap" - 60 min Massage with Oils - Collagen Facial Mask (I feel like I got two facials) - choice of Meridian Massage or Peppermint Scalp Massage - Shampoo - Unlimited use of the spa (steam room, sauna, hot/cold pools, charcoal room) I had Sue for my treatments. For me, she was great. Everyone has their own opinion on bodywork so you have to go experience the treatments for yourself to form an opinion. But for me, I left feeling refreshed, clean, relaxed, and like my problem issues were resolved or would continue to resolve in the next few days. Which they did. I am also pretty sure that Sue walked on my back . 2. The place is totally clean. Like really clean. Don't be put off by the little dogs that greet you by the entrance. The place is clean. 3. It is WOMEN ONLY. I have never really been a "Girls Girl" but I do believe EVERY WOMAN should experience this with her fellow Queens. 4. The owner is really friendly. She explains the entire process to you when it's your first time and she checked up on me and my bestie periodically and explained all of the different reasons for the different spa treatments. Also, at the end of our treatment she didn't try to push us into spending more money. Of course she talked about how bodywork as a maintenance is important but she told us we shouldn't have to do the most expensive treatment every time. 5. NAKEDNESS. Ok, like I said, I am not a "Girls Girl". I was never one to get naked with my girlfriends or really talk about my period much. So I was sketch about the whole naked thing. I just couldn't figure out why it was necessary. So I called ahead of time and asked about it. The girl on the phone told me it was not mandated. And that those bits would be covered during our treatments anyway. When we arrived on spa day the owner was telling us about how we "get naked" and I quickly said we would elect to wear our swimsuits. But she repeated that we would "get naked" so we can enjoy all services. She explained we could wear swim suits in the sauna and steam rooM but not the hot/cold pools bc it has chlorine and they don't want it ruining our swimsuits (which if you ask me are actually designed for that...). However, balls to the wall Besties and I just went for it. Honestly you get over it real quick. People glance at you but don't stare. Another patron could tell we were new and came up to us completely naked and helped us through the process. It's all women so whatever. Also, my bits weren't totally covered during the treatments.... but whatever, my eyes were closed and covered lol so I didn't see anything. 6. I'm writing this because it needs to be heard. This was my 3rd time going and I really enjoy coming here. The ladies in the back are really sweet and do a great job. So the reason adding this is because the owner I'm assuming that's who it is. Whoever the woman behind the counter is. She embarrassed my friend and also myself. At the end of our visit I paid and tipped for my services. When my friend when up to pay... she didn't tip! The lady behind counter called her out in front of everyone in the lobby saying " Hey you forgot to tip are you gonna tip" She wasn't happy with her services Clearly that was her reason for not tipping . But to call her out in front of people is distasteful behavior. You should already know . Leaving a tip is NOT MANDATORY. You don't have to tip. We paid for our services already. It's our decision whether to tip or not, but not because you're being forced to do so. I'm so disappointed that she would do that. People tip by choice not because they have to. I love self care days! Recently came back from a Vegas trip and spent some time in the day spas, which are definitely pricey. Loess Spa is such an amazing value!! $40 for 4hrs utilizing their cold, hot tubs, wet and dry sauna rooms, all in the bare. And if you want to get a body scrub which I highly recommend it's lil over $100. For my visit I did the #3 package ($130), which included spa amenities, body scrub, massage, freshly grated (seriously right next to you) cucumber facial, and shampoo. I literally spent 4hrs taking my time & enjoying the place. I would recommend to come at least an hour before your scheduled massage time, to soak in the tubs because once you get your massage you cannot enter. The other rooms were still very enjoyable. I did get to try the spicy ramen & ginger tea with sparkling water, yum! If you don't want to stay in traffic on the way home just go to the spa! The hours are definitely accommodating. It was a glorious first time experience. I received my treatment from Jessica and Song assisted me at the front desk. Both were very attentive and kind. I enjoyed the hot and cold pools, wet and dry sauna and the salt and charcoal rooms. All services were very healing. Jessica explained to me about the release of toxins- very informative. Song gave me three plums with my ginseng cinnamon tea, while I sat outside and enjoyed the breeze and shade. Then, I made my way in to rinse and change. I spent a good 3 hours here. It was worth it! Absolutely amazing. Everyone is so nice and willing to help you if you have questions (not just employees). Last time I was here, they had the Accupuncture floor mats but now they have shoes for you to use between rooms. After you're done with the spa activities you can get food/drinks and chill in the outside seating area. The eggs are good too, make sure to eat that it's also fun to try and crack it on each other's heads lol. You do have to be nude for the scrubs & in the pool area. It's not awkward at all & it feels nice to be openly nude around other ladies who don't care. At least once a year we have a sissy outing with the first stop at Loess Spa. Friendly staff greets you and you are given a secured locker to put your belongings. Next you strip to your birthday suit so you'll need to be comfortable with your siblings and nieces who will see you in all your birthday glory. This is actually quite funny when you're over 60 and sitting in a hot in door spa followed by several flashes i yo the ice cool spa. Next you are each assigned a sweet older lady who will bathe you vigorously with a loofah type towel. And OMG they cheap everywhere. If you are squeamish about the stuff you see after a pedicure; just imagine your whole body after the sludge off the first layer of dermis. Lol. This Korean bathing ritual is not for the faint at heart because these women are stronger than a work horse and relentless in effort to make your skin feel like a babies bottom. Next; you shower off your dead skin and you go back fir more glorious pleasure because the massage they give you next is thorough and vigorous; again do not Evie t hot stones and kumbiyah moments haha. Finally you have a relaxing facial ( finally) and your hair shampooed. It was an interesting sissy bonding moment and we can't wait to book our next appointment. If you are tan or darker, you will not be treated nicely here. Trust me and the other reviews that mention this also. I treated my mom here for both of our first time for Mother's Day and I wish I would've read the 1-star reviews before we went. When I booked the reservations, I called prior to ask about the process to book etc and the girl I spoke to (appears to be local) advised me to use the discount code that influencer Townie Tay had with them as it was a current promo for 10% off, so I was like wow cool I didn't even know about that, thank you, and I so I did when I booked online. When we arrived, everything was going smoothly up until the scrubbing & "massage". The Korean lady who was scrubbing me kept repeatedly sighing as she was scrubbing me as if to express feelings of what appeared to be irritation, making me feel extremely insecure. She also scrubbed my right underarm so hard that it started bleeding, and then she poured some sort of scented soap on it that made it intensively BURN SO BAD. When I tried to move my arm because it was burning, she would yank my arm back to where she wanted it so I just had to endure the burning. Then when she started doing the "massage" it was SO ENTIRELY PAINFUL for both me AND my mom. I even politely tried to tell her, "I'm so sorry but that's a little sore" and she proceeded to get angry and tell me"No! Not sore! Shh!" And I just had no choice but to endure the "massage". I'm home now writing this review and my lower back feels bruised where it's hard for me to even lean against the couch. Reference the picture attached to my review which shows just one of many developing bruises on my moms arm, proof as to how rough and not kind they are. The worst part was, checking out. When the owner, a different Korean woman, was checking me out, she said "oh I see you got discount 10%" and I said "oh yeah your worker told me to use that promo code from Townie Tay when I called to ask about booking online". When she rang me up and it came to the tipping page, she asked me "so what do you want to tip?" And I said "oh okay I'll do additional 10% since I already tipped on the food, and she replied "No no no no most people tip at least 15% you cannot do lower than that that's too low" so I said "uh.... Ok..." feeling EXTREMELY uncomfortable because tipping is technically optional and she's forcing me to leave a BIGGER tip. So I said ok let's do 15% that's fine, then she says "Wait you pay for you AND your mom right? That's 2 people then! And you get 10% discount? No no you at least do 20%." And at this point I was PISSED. She basically harassed me and refused to check me out all the way or give me back my card until I tipped 20% I left there feeling so self conscious, my mom and I both felt discriminated against just for being Hawaiian woman of color, noticing that the lighter skin women there were treated and talked to a lot better than we were, and also "jipped" because I paid $130 per person for both my mom and myself as a Mother's Day treat, an additional $60 on food that was honestly most likely made from a ramen packet, and forced to tip an additional amount that I wasn't comfortable with. I explained to the more local girl that worked the front when I left and called them to ask about the tipping incident, that if that's the case with tipping, why not include a mandatory tip fee in their service charge like some restaurants do? Why hassle and harass people to leave a bigger tip than they're comfortable with? I am not a cheap person, but my experience was NOT super amazing for me to want to willingly leave a 20% additional tip on top of what I already tipped for the food. Why would I tip amazingly after feeling discriminated against for both my mother AND myself on Mother's Day?! I was already willing to leave a tip because years ago I was a waitress and I know what it is to work in the service industry, but because my original tip wasn't big enough and up to the owners liking, I was forced to leave a tip I wasn't comfortable with. Update 2 hours after leaving: My husband felt so bad about me coming home in tears feeling so sore all over my body, that he and my brother went down there to speak with the owner & make it known to her that what she did was technically illegal, discriminatory and harassment in which I could rightfully file a lawsuit if I wanted to and report them to the BBB for discrimination alone, so the owner refunded my card in the amount of the 20% tip she swindled me. Interestingly though, she tried to tell my husband and brother "okay I refund her $37" and my brother had to tell her "don't try to jip me I have the email receipt that shows the tip you forcibly charged was $47." And the owner had to admit to them they were right since they had the email receipt. So apparently this is a pattern with her where she is constantly trying to jip money and swindle people. read more

Wow! pretty much sums up my experience here. Loess Spa is one of three korean style spas here on the island. I walked in around 430 pm and was able to secure a 500pm spot for a scrub massage package (the #1 is $100 for a scrub and baby oil massage). There are multiple packages or ala cartes to choose from. The body scrub massage combos range from $100 to $140, depending on what add-ons you want. Note: This is a ladies only spa. How a male can leave a one star review above is beyond me, but I have a feeling he is a yelp troll. Also, the ladies who work here speak very limited English, and let me mention again, everyone here is naked. The ladies who work here are dressed in black bras and panties. Before you walk in the front door, you have to take off your shoes. As soon as you walk in, there is already nakedness. Women of all ages, shapes, sizes and hairyness. Everyone, including the other customers, were really friendly. The reception desk is on the left, and you check in. The lady asks you what service you want, you pay and get handed a locker key, a bath towel, a hair towel, and a gown. I gave back the gown since I am a non smoker and did not need to go outside. I was assigned a locker, everything comes off, including jewelries. I tied my hair in a bun and went in the spa area. It's pretty warm in the main area, which made me happy since I have a low tolerance for cold temperatures. On the left are 4 tables. Straight ahead is the dry and wet saunas. To the right are the very hot and very cold water pools and the showers. Proper etiquette is to shower off first, go in the saunas, then into the pools. Your skin needs to be softened up so the mamasan can scrub off your nastiness with ease. After about 20 to 30 minutes, the ajumah called me to the table. First off she rinsed me off with warm water which feels really good. She then proceeded to scrub me down with the korean bath scrub mitts and body wash. Every part of me got scrubbed down. Ajumah says down, up, side when she is ready for you to turn. I am again reminded of how my grandma used to scrub me down when i was a baby child. My lady (HANA) covered my eyes during the scrub and massage, which I appreciated. The amount of gray goo that she scrubbed off was incredible, I didn't want to look and was really glad my eyes were covered. I could feel with my fingers some of the dead skin she was scrubbing off, and it's kind of nasty. There were times when I was getting scrubbed down where I was almost spread eagle, but no one in there is googly eyed at you. I could hear the other ladies in the room, with my limited Korean knowledge, talking about my tattoos, but no comments about anyones body habitus. Hana put up a small sheer privacy curtain up by me since we were at the first table which was also appreciated. After about 45 minutes, ajumah will ask you to go shower off and come back. She first covers you with towels and gives a massage, then takes the towels off, covers you with baby oil and massages you AGAIN. When you face up, she washes your face with yogurt and puts on a fresh cucumber mask, then finishes up massaging the rest of your body. A shampoo and scalp massage follows that. I would say that was about 45 minutes to an hour. I must say I feel amazing. My lady today was named HANA. She is so awesome. I have been to many massages and I must say she is legit. Her techniques are the same you get at the fancy spas. She applies firm pressure and I feel brand new. I will definitely make a reservation with her next time I go. read more

My first time at a Korean Spa and let me say, I'm hooked. Location, threw me off. I'll admit. I wasn't expecting a spa in this area. Parking was more than sufficient. The facility, not as pretty as other spas I've frequented but it was clean. Like really clean! There's a charcoal room, a salt room, sauna and dry sauna, hot pool and cold pool, multiple scrub tables and private massage rooms. It was kind of a culture shock in that you're expected to wander completely naked but the bright side, no one cares. No staring. A few minutes and I was completely comfortable. You bathe in the hot tub for like 30 min, dip into cold tub then off to the sauna to open your pores. A lady will retrieve you for the scrub, omg the scrub... I exfoliate regularly and use the Japanese scrub cloth daily. This woman scribed me down and I was shocked. The amount of dead skin removed... like EVERY inch of your body is scrubbed down. You're told to shower off and return for a massage while a facial mask is doing its job. It was amazing. I felt completely relaxed and rejuvenated. Definitely coming back!
