Always excellent, innovative and cool! I love Locanda Verde and try to stop in every time I'm near Tribeca. Yesterday, my daughter and I popped in for some "snacks." Every bite was delicious, every step of our iced tea refreshing. We ordered some food to eat at the table and some to take home. The Sardinian Sheep's Milk Ricotta, sea salt, oregano ($25) was delicious. Very simple, but the grilled bread does something magical. This dish really pops with the lemon thyme--so good. Again, remember, it's very simple, but that's part of the charm. We both truly enjoyed the Big Eye Tuna, caperberry tonnato ($30). The tonnato sauce was phenomenal. I spent all morning Googling how to make it at home. I doubt I'll come close. We both commented that the next time we're getting our own--sharing was just not enough. Each of us enjoyed a delicious Lamb Meatball Sliders, caprino, cucumber pickles ($16). I grew up with my mom making Aloo Keema, and this tasting meatball reminded me of these flavors. I will order again for sure. We ordered the fabulous Tuscan Liver Mousse, vincotto ($18), to go along with the Fava Bean, prosciutto, pecorino di fossa ($24). Both were yummy, but I will say that I wish they did not put the "spreads" on the bread because we planned on eating it later in the day. I'll simply ask for it to be prepared differently next time. Although most aspects of Locanda Verde were pretty decent, it was simply not worth the price. I ordered the Garganelli pasta ($37), which was like a penne shape with duck ragu and olives. There really isn't much to comment on with the pasta itself as it was cooked fairly normally. I will say the duck was a generous amount and pretty tasty though. I'm not a fan of olives but if you are, that would be a plus for this dish. Personally, I would've preferred more of a cheesy pasta, as you really couldn't taste any of the cheese they put on top. Maybe apart from the duck, this was really a (maybe slightly above) average quality pasta that you can probably get for half the price elsewhere. I also tried some of the appetizers like the Fritto Misto and arugula salad, which were similarly around average in quality. The interior of the restaurant is very nice though with a vibe that is classy yet not overly formal. The staff are very friendly and attentive - that part actually did match the price point. Overall, I have to give Locanda Verde 3 stars (would give 3.5 if I could). While the food is decent, I simply can't justify the high prices so will likely not be overpaying for this again. read more

Went to Locanda Verde on a Friday night for dinner with a reservation. We arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation but unfortunately, it took them 30 minutes past our scheduled time to seat us. Visited Locanda Verde on a Monday for a friend's birthday dinner. There were about seven of us, and we were seated at a large round table toward the front of the restaurant. It was not completely full, but there was still a fair amount of people dining and gathered at the bar. The space is inviting, with a large bar, dark wood finishes, and low lighting that gives it an upscale, cozy feel. Service was attentive, courses were well-paced, and our water glasses were consistently refilled. We started with the whipped ricotta ($25), focaccia ($15), and the Insalata D'Andrea (arugula, apple, almond, asiago, $26). We enjoyed the started and salad (though portion sizes were on the smaller side), and we also ordered a bottle of Montepulciano, which was on the lower end of the wine list but still not inexpensive. The wine was excellent. For mains, we each ordered individual pastas, and we shared the Brussels sprouts, which were very tasty and quite rich but on the smaller side portion-wise. Pasta gluten-free options were limited, there was one gluten-free pasta (fusilli) that could be substituted into certain dishes. I ordered the lamb bolognese ($35) with the gluten-free fusilli. The portion was generous and topped with a large dollop of whipped ricotta. While it is a decent option if you need gluten-free, I would not go out of my way for it, the dish did not stand out enough to justify the price point. For dessert, we had the tiramisu, which was a unique take, very heavy on the cream, served in a large bowl, and topped with whole espresso beans. It was interesting but quite rich, making it difficult to have more than a few bites. The staff also brought out a complimentary ice cream with a candle for the birthday, which was a thoughtful touch. Overall, this is a great spot for an upscale birthday dinner, work dinner, or drinks at the bar. However, if you are looking for more authentic or standout Italian cuisine, I would suggest going elsewhere. read more

Easily accessible large space by the Chambers st stop. I showed up early and got a drink, la sporcarita, at the bar. It was spicy with the right kick. We shared the insalata d'andrea which was tasty but expensive at 26 dollars. I got the black shells frutti Di mare. I prefer my squid ink pasta to be in the form of spaghetti. It came with a tomato sauce with a nice array of seafood. But it wasn't the best I've had and it wasn't super special to make me want to try again. Lastly the olive cake was pretty good. At first I thought with the name it would be Spanish, but turns out it's an Italian spot in Greenwich. The appetizers were solid - the toasted bread with olive oil and what looked like eggplant or wild mushroom puree (I'll ask the guy who ordered) was fantastic, tasty and a good toasty treat without being too hard on the palate. The lamb meatball sliders were top heavy and ok. Regular sliders probably would've been the way to go. Steak tartare was good. Gabagool and grana was capicola and and a hard cheese which was ok, but not easy to eat - heavy/oily. The pappardelle with lamb bolognese was ok, overly salty - ended up eating most of the pasta (some of the sheets stuck together, though, so that wasn't edible), and leaving much of the lamb bolognese (greasy, but better than the meatball sliders). The fresh ricotta and mint helped cut the oil a bit and I was left wanting more of that. Good thing - service was quick and efficient and knowing the business nearby (Citi) they asked us how fast we needed to be out - and they kept us mostly on-time, nicely enough. I'm always cautious going into overly popular restaurants as I find they often don't live up to the hype. I can confidently say I was blown away by Locanda Verde. Genuinely everything we had was without note and was purely delectable. We started with the Caesar salad and focaccia, which were both great. For pastas we had the black shells with seafood and the Bolognese. I genuinely have zero complaints about either and I'm a very tough critic when it comes to my Italian, pasta especially. We then had the Bronzino and eggplant Parm. Both were great, but I must say this is some of the absolute best eggplant Parm I've ever had. In terms of drinks, the espresso martini was fabulous. The bottle of wine we had was great and the only potential negative from this dinner was the dirty martini I ordered which was not dirty at all though someone else at the table called it " one of the most well-balanced martinis" he's had. It had been 10 years since my last visit (which was for dinner), so I decided to come back for lunch with a friend visiting NYC for the first time from Atlanta. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The food was very bland. My friend's eggplant sandwich and my ravioli were both underwhelming, and the ravioli portion was shockingly small -- more like an appetizer than an entrée. I was still hungry and ordered the steak tartare, which came with corn nuts on top. I've never had crunchy steak tartare before, and it was just odd and off-putting. It also lacked flavor and desperately needed salt. The service was equally disappointing. We waited 7-8 minutes just to get menus, had to track someone down for water refills, and my friend actually had to get up and find someone so we could get the check. The one bright spot was the maitre d', who was very kind and apologized for the experience. She encouraged me to come back for dinner service, which I may do in a few weeks. OK, so I did return. This time with a party of four. The hostess was very nice and sadness in literally almost the same section that we were seated in before. Maybe this is the bad thing. Our waiter came up and asked if we wanted to order drinks told us he would be leaving and that he wasn't going to be our waiter. Then he came back and said I guess I'm staying. I guess his unhappiness is what created this recent visit bad experience. Let's start with a drink order. The two men ordered their cocktails and for a scotch and a tequila it literally took forever to arrive. I ordered an Apperal spritz to start, and that came with the glass half full. The other lady had a margarita which she barely touched. Onto the food, let me start by saying the order was screwed up, but that what came was actually delicious. We ordered the dry age steak because it would've been enough for the whole table. What came was a strip steak sliced on a plate with a tomato and basil sauce. It was tender and delicious but almost embarrassing that it was literally enough for one maybe two. We ordered the Italian broccoli, the carrots and the potatoes all were very good. Our happy waiter returned to say there was a mixup, and that this was not the dry aged steak we ordered. By the time he realized it, we were almost done with our Meal just said forget it. instead, we ordered another round of drinks which we should've just got up left and went to another bar to get service because those drinks took longer than the first order of drinks. We did order the lemon tart and the tiramisu for dessert both were beautiful and both were delicious. I think the cachet of this restaurant, it's location is why it is constantly packed. Plus, the food is always consistently good. But, it still suffers with bad service. I was looking at my last review and it's been quite some time and that has not improved. We arrived pretty early for our reservation and already felt that the place was a little too pompous. The host/esses mostly gave us strange looks and said we will be seated closer to our time so we went and got drinks. When we came back, we were seated at a "cocktail table" which was not big enough for app plates, let alone dinner. I asked the hostess to move us, which she reluctantly did to a a table with booth chairs and she made it a point to keep repeating that the tables were the same size. Yes, I told her they are but the booth seats give us a little room. It felt like she wanted to "hide" us from the rest of the room. She rolled her eyes and off she went. The server was pretty slow to approach us, took about 10 min just to get water, think the sommelier saw us struggling so he came over and suggested a lovely bottle, we finally thought, oh, here is the service we expected. About 10 min later, server came over and got us bottle water and vanished again. Now, what was bothering us was there was a 6 top in front of us and a 2 top next to us who were getting all of his "time". We barely even got a look anytime he passed by the table. The sommelier came back and asked us if anyone came over, which we said not for awhile so he went to go find someone. Another few minutes later, server returns and we have a few questions, ask if he had any suggestions. He responded quickly and didn't really seem to want to help so we ordered and he seemed to not care about us at all. Fifteen minutes later, bus person came over and we asked for bread which she suggested the focaccia, we asked if we can get it before our meals? She said sure and got the server, he said no since our meals were on their way and left. Again, all his time was going to the tables outside of us. When the food finally came (and yes, we had time), the lasagna and eggplant were delicious! In the middle of this, we get the focaccia which was inedible and we said, we didn't order this and didn't want it at the end of our meal. Server looked pretty annoyed and took it and was reprimanding the bus person in the corner. Not cool. Best part of our evening was the food though. We didn't see any service again except from Chris, the sommelier and when we had dirty plates in front of us and dessert was mentioned. Again, we asked for suggestions and he seemed annoyed. We ordered and said to each other, we never return. While, the food was amazing, the lack of attention for a $200 dollar +++ meal is not what we expected from the Locanda Verde family ( as we go to Tribeca). It was frustrating. I felt that if we were in the and I hate to say this, "visually aesthetic look" though we were dressed for a night out, we would have received better attention. Great wine list that paired nicely with the courses and the servers were fantastic with giving guidance on what would pair nicely. Sadly disappointed. We loved the HY location so came here hoping for a similar experience. We ordered the green Caesar salad, which we had before, and it was fabulous again. Loved the basil dressing. But we tried a bunch of new dishes and didn't really love any of them: - sheep's milk ricotta crostini: didn't understand all the rave reviews for this as I didn't find it anything special - AC's half roasted chicken: the wing was decently good but most of it was breast/dry white meat that wasn't very good - spaghetti with clams: the wine wasn't cooked down enough and came off too strong, but the pasta was otherwise cooked well - tiramisu: this is usually our favorite but this was very disappointing. There were barely any lady fingers the espresso was far too coarse and strong. As for wine, I enjoyed the Verdicchio but not the Pecorino. They do have a private dining room that we were hoping to check out and book for an event but it was occupied (the HY location does not have a private dining room option). read more

I wanted to try the Spring Pea Cappelletti, but the kitchen closed just before 3 pm where my order was taken and unable to be cooked in time. At least the Sardinian Sheep's Milk Ricotta complemented the razor clam fra diavolo. Had I known this red sauce was made with tomatoes and chili flakes, I would've switched my order given I told the staff that I'm allergic to anything spicy without dairy to counter the capsaicin oils. The saving grace was the beautiful mound of white, creamy and light ricotta dressed with olive oil to spread on my bread. I usually like Italian restaurants because they make and bake their bread fresh. However, my crostinis were burnt black on one side consistently. I wanted to like this place given the name, ambiance, and attentive service. However, the lack of coordination between the kitchen and wait staff didn't seem to exist. I loved everything about Locanda Verde, minus the small portion sizes. I can deal with damn near anything the universe throws at me but small portion sizes. I truly am god's strongest soldier. I've lived in New York long enough to be conditioned to pay between $25-$40 for a plate of pasta and not bat an eye, but when the Grandmother's Ravioli ($33) and Rigatoni ($36) came I immediately knew I would have to go home and make myself a 2nd dinner. These small plates of pasta were on brand with the tiny lamb sliders ($16) and steak tartare ($29) we got for appetizers... "What is this.. a dinner for ants?!" This being said, the quality of everything was HIGH level. Phenomenal. Sensational. Legitimately some of the best pasta I've had in the city. That Steak Tartare went NUTS too. Bite for bite, I'm putting Locanda Verde up against all the heavyweights... you just don't get that many bites ahahaha. My buddy's girlfriend always chirps me because she actually prefers small portion sizes when going out to eat. My soul has never disagreed with something so vehemently, but it is good to know somebody else's perspective on life can be so drastically different than mine. Kind of cool, honestly. Civil discourse is so important to push society forward and live in harmony with one another. I will absolutely be back, but will have a big snack session before my next visit. We had the radicchio salad, arugula salad, rigatoni, scallops, mixed seafood dish and the mushroom truffle fettuccine which was the best dish on the table, but all were delicious! We also had the sides of potatoes (soo good), broccoli rabe and Brussels sprouts caramelized to perfection! Dessert included the pumpkin tart, eggnog gelato and the tiramisu. The flavor of the 6 thin pumpkin ravioli were not worth the price of $32 and left my coworkers still hungry. The star of our meal was the sheep's milk ricotta appetizer and the bread.
