Barbuto in most cities in America would be great - and it has a great location in NYC and is a beautiful space - but the food just doesn't live up to the hype. Nothing is bad, but nothing is amazing. It is fine italian food with good vibes. At the prices presented to you you would hope for more - and you can get more not far. With Don Angie, Crane Club, I Sodi and others so close, Barbuto is not showing as a winner. Now, if you have a kid or want space while you eat and need a reservation when everything else is booked up, Barbuto does that for you with kind service, that's mostly fast. I'll be back, but more because it's a West Village institution that people enjoy meeting at rather than a culinary experience. If you do come make sure to try the Kale Salad and the meatball, both very good. The Past dishes were all lackluster in my opinion, and the smoked salmon pizza was good, the Hannah pizza was ehh. read more

Lovely space and friendly, attentive service. Great wine by the glass and the food was decent but disappointing. I found the portions to be quite large so no complaint there. But there is a fine line between hearty rustic and sloppy and I think the kitchen is veering a bit towards the sloppy direction. The beet salad had its skin still on it, though cooked well enough. Not uniformly flavored but sprinkled with salt. The famous chicken's dark meat could have been cooked a bit more, the breast was perfect but I would have preferred more salsa and less oil in the dish. The dessert was very good. read more

The meatball app was good too, but only one meatball even though it was big for $28...tried their classic chicken dish which was good but I prefer my chicken a little better cooked. Finding the threads of beauty in New York City can be the stuff of adventure -- Barbuto answered the call this night. Having just shaved my beard, I relished the irony of seeking this place out. The contrast of of the dimly lit warehouse-y feel after strolling through the neighborhood-y West Village would have been jarring were I not immediately seated at a candlelit table with a breathtaking view of the Hudson. That's when I told the waiter that I wanted to go "full Waxman." (well half Waxman). Waxman's kale salad was tempting but the calamari and shrimp salad were calling me. A mix of texture -- crunchy greens, threads of soft cheese and perfectly fried shellfish made the salad a delight. Then came the chicken -- the saltiness of the salsa verde hit me like a pesto in a good way and was a wondeful complement to the crispy skin and juicy chicken. We chose this restaurant for quiet conversation that didn't happen but the food was amazing! We had the best seat in the house with a view of the water. We started with the kale Caesar, bread and meatball. The kale was really excellent. We also ordered the fluke app which was yummy but came out late with no plates so we ate it with our mains. I ordered the duck which was perfect! For dessert we had the bubino. Just two bites and I was satisfied! We loved it here! read more

This restaurant really surprised me. I've been to many restaurants in the city and have don't often see a space this large and with this much open space. While normal for long islanders and other non city people, the beautifully decorated area was a welcome sight after spending all day in an office. The food delivered as well. I ordered the duck option and confidently say it is some of the best duck I have had. The sauce wasn't too sweet, and the skin almost had this crispiness to it that was delectable. The side order of potatoes is well worth it, served in a unique extra crunchy manner. Service was the only non perfect thing about this place. While not necessarily bad I wouldn't say we had a great experience either. Waters and drinks were left empty for a while with no one asking and food took a long time to come out. Overall it's enough for me to knock down a star but I still really enjoyed Barbuto and would go back. read more

I could not recommend the Chef's Table experience at Barbuto more. I'm a bit of a picky eater, so normally I'm a bit nervous about family style tasting menus where I don't get to select what I'm eating. They brought us out SO many things and I was obsessed with each and every single dish. That literally never happens for me. The tasting menu seems a bit pricey ($100 per person) but when you consider where you are and the huge amount of food you receive it's absolutely worth the price. The meal starts out with an appetizer course, which could really be an entire meal in itself. Meatballs, pesto pizza, olives and focaccia and some delicious salads like kale cesar and radicchio with mushrooms. For mains we were served bucatini amatriciana, gnocchi, roasted cauliflower, crispy parm potatoes, sweet potatoes, frittata and an herb roasted chicken. Everything was 10 out of 10, but my highlight dishes were pastas and the salads. On top of it all, ALLL of this food was per four guests. So for our. party of eight we had duplicates of every single dish. It's an insane amount of food in the best way possible. Service is on point and they kept our red wine flowing all night long. The meal ended with the most delicious pumpkin roll which paired perfectly with an espresso martini. For a special occasion holiday lunch this is the perfect pick. There are so many restaurants around (and of course, Barbuto has their regular menu) but the Chef's Table experience was elevated and an amazing way to treat yourself and indulge. Went last week after hearing so many things about Barbuto. I will say the space is beautiful, looking out to the Hudson for sunsets or towards the open kitchen. The service was spot on and exceeded expectations. The food however did not meet expectations. Beet salad was soso, fluke tartare was also mid and the chicken, which I had heard so much about was a bit disappointing. The sauce I did not care for but that's my preference. This restaurant always delivers consistently great food whenever I'm In NYC. My client and I dined like royalty on a perfect summer evening on Horatio Street. The only constructive suggestion (after having just read Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara ) is that it wouldn't kill the Barbuto staff to pay attention when patrons frequent your establishment from Dallas on the regular with clients / the restaurant was not busy and no management stopped by to see how our dinner was & the server had zero personality - which was disappointing as the staff brings the dining experience to life in my opinion. read more

This restaurant came highly recommended to me by a coworker so was slightly disappointed that the food was very middle of the road when it comes to Italian fare. What it lacks in flavor it makes up in ambiance though as it's situated as an amazingly family-friendly spot for lunch by the water. Although you still have the West Side Highway separating you from the water the massive windows open up the feeling of the restaurant and give a nice sense of airiness. The restaurant has tons of fans set-up which made us a bit chilly but they were quick to turn down the speeds when asked. My favorite item was the pizza (flavorful, saucy and topped with ricotta) although their chicken (which they are known for) was flavorful and juicy. We also ordered a side of potatoes to go with the chicken (as the entree is just the chicken, nothing else) but they were a bit hard and too crunchy for my taste. They also weren't willing to give us any ketchup and instead handed us a bowl of this 'aioli' which wasn't very good. Our waiter was also a bit disinterested and didn't seem happy that we were paying with Blackbird but was at least prompt with taking our orders and at least listening to our concerns. read more

Was able to make last minute weeknight dinner reservations 24 hours in advance, which was a HUGE lifesaver. JW does it again in the new space. Luckily had a group of 4 so we were able to sample a bunch from the menu. Started with meatball and the insalata di cavolo. Meatball was large but quite pricey for one piece. Salad was reminiscent of the best pizzeria caesar salad you ever had. Brought the group here for the chicken salsa verde and the potatoes. Unbeatable combination. The older manager who "greeted" us was so despondent and unwelcoming that it threw a wet blanket on the whole lunch. As we were leaving, he walked right by us, without recognizing our existence. Their "famous" roasted chicken was decent. Nothing to brag about. The Zuni Cafe in San Francisco offers a far better roasted chicken. The skirt steak was supposed to have a Bordelaise sauce but I could not taste it. Why?! The accompanying salad of various greens was fresh but the dressing was overly acidic with no balance whatsoever. How can a professional kitchen not provide a proper vinaigrette? Disappointing, to say the least. If Barbuto is rated among the Top 100 restaurants of NYC, I invite you to my home in Baltimore where I can present you with a far tastier and more pleasant dinner. And I am "only" a good home cook! Service was poor. We felt that we were an afterthought. I wanted a beer with dinner but our server did not show up after our entree order. I came for an easy Saturday brunch. The dining room is full of high energy and is buzzing with laughter and chatter. Its a great view of the river. We tried to get into Pastis on a rainy Saturday afternoon and there was an hour wait. My friend asked the host which restaurant was his favorite in that area and he recommended Barbuto. We took the short 5 minute walk over. It was lovely inside and had a view of the water. We all loved the food. I had the gnocchi... though not pillowy and soft, the sauce that came with it made up for it a 1000% (still dreaming about it a week later). My friends had a salad and the special and both loved what they had. The only reason for the 4 star rating was that even with the restaurant half full it was still difficult to hear one another and that our server was not the friendliest to the point that we commented on her lack of personality and friendliness. Would definitely recommend and go back for more! read more

A friend and I visited this spot on a Friday night after leaving the Whitney Museum of American Art around the corner to see Amy Sherald's 'American Sublime' exhibit (which is fantastic by the way). We were seated inside fairly quickly without a reservation. This place does seem popular so I recommend making a reservation if you want to come though. The ambiance was a little loud (it's an open floor almost warehouse like floor plan) and too dimly lit for my liking. I don't like eating in the dark lol. However, the food, staff, and service were amazing. It was also nice that the kitchen is open so you can see the staff preparing all of the dishes. We had the pepperoni pizza and it was fantastic. I don't think I'd go at night again due to how dim it is there, but I'd go back during the day and opt to sit outside with a nice view of the water. read more

I was so excited to get to dine at a Jonathan Waxman restaurant. Roast chicken is my favorite dish and I have eaten it at many restaurants around the world including the famous Zuni cafe in San Francisco! This restaurant is beautiful and intimate inside though a tad noisy. We had a lovely view of the river from our high top table. we ordered a couple of fancy very expensive cocktails that were quite tasty. Our waiter was an absolute doll!! He was efficient, accurate, and funny!! We started by sharing the kale salad. The portion was generous and tasty! Then of course I ordered the roast chicken and my friend ordered the steak. The steak was well cooked but quite under seasoned. The chicken was well cooked and very tasty. Here's the problem- the chicken comes with a very tasty salsa verde on top which unfortunately destroyed the crispness of the skin. A roast chicken with a soggy skin is just not at all what I was hoping for. This meal was indeed tasty though pricey, the setting and service were excellent but the chicken was a tad disappointing. read more

My wife and I ate at Barbuto for the first time last night. Nice atmosphere with good energy. The shredded kale salad was delicious, unlike any we have ever experienced. The problem occurred when I requested our waiter to wait on firing the entrees so we could enjoy a slower pace of dining. He understood my request and told me to notify him when I wanted him to signal the preparation to the cooking staff. This did not happen. A few minutes later, a runner brought the entrees to the table. The waiter stepped in and told the runner to return the food to the kitchen. I indicated to him that I did not want a reheated $50 steak and he assured me it would be recooked. When the entrees did arrive they were obviously reheated. The food was tepid at best. There was good flavor in both the steak and the red snapper but it was like eating leftovers. That was disappointing, especially given the quality of the salad and the promise of the meal overall. read more

Friend canceled morning of so I went solo to avoid the cancellation fee. I sat at a high table over the bar because I wanted to read. It was unfortunately way too dark to read, and honestly too dark to see the menu or the food. My server was lovely and very welcoming. I ordered the polpettone, one giant meatball in a very flavorful sauce. It was delicious. I should have ordered a different pasta because I hate squash but I thought the gnocchi would have enough mushrooms to distract from the damn squash. My mistake. I also ordered the verdure which was delicious, salty and crunchy with toasted breadcrumbs. I took the gnocchi and greens home and will combine the two and toss that damn squash. I really love this space and the waitstaff are wonderful. My only suggestion is turn the lights up a notch. I could barely see what I was eating and that's part of the magic. read more

Despite how far west it is, we liked this place so much the first time that we came again for a second time! There were no available reservations online, but my friend was able to call for one for the time that we wanted which was a Friday night at 7pm. Like the first time, I appreciated the spacious space. There is some semblance of privacy here unlike other restaurants in NYC. I had the rebelde which contained mezcal (my go to!), passion fruit, campari and lime. The rim was coated with a unique black lime salt. The menu is seasonal so we didn't have the chance to repeat many of the first dishes. We shared the following: 1) kale salad: absolutely delicious. Would get again the third time. 2) fried squash: great concept of a fried vegetable stuffed with cheese on a fresh bed of greens. It was good to try once but nothing special to want again 3) tagiatelle with shrimp and scallops: very tasty. Definitely a great summer dish that tasted light. I thought the noodles were too Al dente/a little undercooked 4) gnocchi with fern, peas, mint and pesto: the texture and taste hit the spot. It was a very delicious summer dish! 5) hanger steak: it was not nearly as good as the first time. In fact it didn't even look like hanger steak; but more of a Chuck meat in how it was cut too.... 6) side of potatoes: amazing as always. Second time was not as good as the first mainly bc of the quality of the hanger steak. There are so many new and great restaurants to try that I probably won't be back for some time. But this still is a great place to try when you're in the City. read more

Finally made it to Barbuto 2.0. Was a big fan of the old one, but this meal fell REAL flat. Made a same-day res on a Friday and got seated at a high table, which was fine. My boyfriend and I started with wine and shared: + Calamari salad + Ravioli + Pizza stagionale + Asparagus + Rhubarb crostata Service: There was a long wait between the apps and entrees, and our server was hard to flag down (after we ordered, never saw him again until dessert). He also recommended a wine to us, we said yes, then he came back with a totally different wine after apparently getting a recommendation from a coworker (?) We drank it but it was an odd order of events. Food: The calamari was the best dish we ate. The ravioli was good but a little underdone, and the asparagus was too salty. The pizza was solid. Dessert was good but at that point we just wanted to get out of there. Verdict: As much as I loved the old Barbuto - I went multiple times and even celebrated Christmas Eve there once - I cannot in good conscience recommend the new iteration. read more

Sadly, have to demote Barbuto to three and a half stars after our Saturday night experience. We had a reservation for 9 p.m. but were asked to wait at the bar. We ordered a drink, and then our table was ready and the host escorted us to it. The drink never followed us over, and the waiter couldn't discern what happened to it, even when we asked him. We ordered the meatball (delicious, as always) and bread to go with it. The meatball came, the bread didn't - just some breadsticks, which were also delicious, but impossible to mop up sauce with them. When we asked our server what happened to the bread he said that the restaurant had run out of bread (!!!) and the breadsticks were free (!?!). How do you run out of bread on a Saturday night? The kale salad, which we usually love, was too acidic and the texture of lumpy baby food. The steak we ordered was generously portioned, but very chewy, under salted, and served with an accompaniment that was a total mystery to me (some kind of sauteed veg? I checked the menu but the there is no hanger steak there). Thank goodness for the crispy potatoes we ordered as a side. Budino was served very cold from the fridge, too thick and just not chocolatey. Keep in mind, there is not much ambience to speak of here. The acoustics are good, but the room feels cold and angular, and the view of the highway doesn't add much to the experience. Take away reliably good food and there is not much of a reason to go here anymore. read more

What a remarkable meal! This West Village gem was an instant hit with our group that was able to snag a Monday early dinner table with less than a week's notice. The food! We opened with cocktails (we had been bourbon tasting around town) and a salad that we shared. Red carrots, watermelon radishes, beets and a peppery green with a walnut dressing that was light and fresh and bright and springy. Because we couldn't choose, we opted to share three entrees: shrimp risotto with spring ramps, pollo al forno with salsa verde, and agnolotti (a stuffed pasta served with asparagus). We were so overwhelmed by the crispy skin and perfect cook of the chicken and the remarkable flavor and tooth of the pasta that we almost ignored the risotto with its perfect shrimp (but only for a hot minute... let's be honest). I used the chicken to sop up every drop of the velvety fonduta sauce from that pasta - wow! Two desserts - crostata and affogotta - both came with vanilla gelato and made for a perfect finish to the meal. Charming and friendly wait staff. Very attentive. Jonathan Waxman was in the restaurant (can't miss the chef when there is an open kitchen). He signed my cookbook! Although rain had been predicted and fog had been dense all morning, by the time we hit Barbuto the sky was clear and the restaurant was filled with golden natural light. It was a perfect setting for a birthday dinner (although I imagine it is always too windy to eat outside). This is a beautiful restaurant, where the glass walls provide a lovely view of the river and the sunset. We visited Barbuto for dinner before attending the Opera. We arrived early and enjoyed cocktails and appetizers, before our entree. The service we received from Andrea was superb! She was friendly, upbeat and kept aware of our every need. The Salmon pizza was absolutely amazing! (One of the favorites, in a week of wonderful dining experiences). The thin crust is still warm from the oven, when the avocado crema, smoked salmon and caviar are placed atop. The flavors are amazing and then the caviar roe explodes in your mouth!! Fantastic!! The risotto is creamy and delicious, with the delicate flavors of the cheese and spinach merging. We followed this up with coffee and espresso topped vanilla ice cream. Yum! This was a delicious dining experience!! Highly recommended! ( our only complaint, and it's a common problem, as the restaurant fills the concrete floors and glass walls reflect the sound and it gets noisy, making civil conversation difficult.) read more
