Thankfully I came across Studio 99! It is perfectly located near downtown Oakland, in a small clean salon. Went in last night after easy scheduling with the owner, Melissa, via IG. Melissa is very knowledgeable and talented at what she does. My hair is now almost a week out and has been relatively painless (fresh braids hurt no matter what) and the style looks great! I especially love how she set the "leave out" do I can style my hair differently. To top it off my real hair was trimmed and braided with support to take the pressure off my natural hair. A gem! So fast forward she tells me no she's not going to do it and she needs a ft mind u I had already tried calling her at the exact time she told me to. It kind of had a wiggish look but I was happy that she was accommodating and agreed to do it. Now I 100% regret it. I got a parking ticket as she talked and showed me pictures the full first 1 and some mins before actually even doing my hair. So overall I wouldn't return. I sent them a message via Yelp and Starr hit me back immediately. GIRLFRIENDS!!! ....My forever new stylist Starr is the TRUTH! Girlfriend has skills! My cut and color is on point and people are constantly stopping me and telling me how beautiful I look. She is the BEST!!!! I plan to dip my feet a little more in the cut and color world.... It was a small (very), busy shop, with every chair occupied, so I was mindful of the stylists' time. A stylist I believe named Starr, the owner, introduced me to Nikita. The staff suggested booking online, but I asked Nikita if I could speak with her directly as I had several questions. Rather than interrupt her while she was working with a client, I asked for her number and the best day to call. She suggested Sunday or Monday, and I told her I'd call Monday. On Monday, I sent a text reminding her of our conversation and asking when she might be available to talk. Three days later, Nikita has still not responded. I made the effort to visit in person because I was geniunely interested in becoming a client. I understand that stylists are busy, but a brief reply - or simply directing me back to online booking- would have been appreciated. The lack of follow-up leaves me wondering what communication (or lack thereof) would be like once I became a client. I hope the owner is aware, because prospective clients may be slipping through the cracks. Finally, I found a wonderful stylist who I reached out to via email - and she immediately responded. Guess who has my business !

Unfortunately, the customer service and appointment management did not match the quality of the work. My daughter had a 10:00 a.m. appointment, but her service did not begin until approximately 10:45 a.m., and it was started by another stylist because the stylist assigned to her had not yet arrived. Her actual stylist arrived later. I understand that delays happen, but a 45-minute delay without the assigned stylist present is significant, especially when scheduling services for a young child. Better communication about the delay, the stylist's arrival time, and what to expect would have made a major difference. What makes this particularly disappointing is that the talent is absolutely there. My daughter's braids were exemplary, and I was very pleased with the final result. The customer experience simply needs to rise to the same standard as the hairstyling. Stronger communication, punctuality, and appointment management would make Braids By Us a much easier business to recommend without reservation.

I actually love the atmosphere here with black women gathering and sharing so much more than just hair but different experiences of life. It's a pretty good environment to be apart of. I don't mind spending my earnings with fair people who have moral ethics and are fair to the community that supports them. I strongly suggest you give them a try and don't stop after your first visit because you might just have to find the right braider for you. Thus far I love it here ! I ignored their website look and booked with Comfort since that is who does her hair. Strike 1-Well when I arrived 1 minute before my scheduled appointment time, I had no idea who anyone was and was told to just sit down & wait for Comfort.. she was in the middle of braiding someone else's hair so I ended up sitting & waiting for almost 2 hours for her to begin. The Pros: She executed the style I showed her, pretty well and she was pretty damn fast. The Cons: It was hot & funky in the shop (No AC & it was a hot day) & my French braids were about $250 (I could've just got boho singles) Strike 2: The style was cute but my hair only lasted FOUR DAYS before my natural hair began sticking out making the braids/twists look raggedy, so I was very disappointed and felt like I wasted my money... my sister convinced me to call them to fix it after several more days Pros: The lady agreed to reTwist my hair and I went the next evening at the time she gave me 5pm. When I got there I had to wait again but it wasnt very long this time. Cons AND Strike 3: She proceeded to retwist my hair one by one and then she dipped it and sent me on my way... I thanked her and even left her a little tip because i was appreciative that she redid it... however, when I left they were wet so I couldn't tell they weren't done right until after I got home and they dried up. Once they dried I was so disappointed and EMBARRASSED at the end result... she took them out and made them WORSE!! I proceeded to text the owner to let her know & sent her a video and she didnt respond so I reached out again the next day and she asked my name and aftdr I gave it to her she never responded again and I was left spending a bunch of money on a hairstyle that lasted 4 days then got absolutely WORSE once they "fixed" it for me... im so disappointed because I thought id found a hidden gem for future braids & styles but NOPE I will not be back. Sidenote: I reached out to them once again to let them know that my retwisted hair looked worse than before & even provided a video to show it and was ignored so I definitely do not recommend this shop at ALL to anyone!!!
