I was nervous about faux locs and decided to go for it! I booked with Starr and she was great! Hollie was also great, she was very gentle and washed my hair to perfection, she asked questions and gave suggestions for hair care that were very much appreciated. The atmosphere is pleasant and positive which is important when looking for a stylist. I am so happy with my new do and will be going back. This salon works magic with natural hair. I've been there twice, the first time to have my hair curled and the second to get a weave done. Both times my stylist was Ms. Gina. The way she handled my natural hair was beyond amazing and the salon uses products that leave your hair feeling more moisturized and soft. I was surprised and impressed that the curls lasted all week given that I don't sleep with something to cover my hair. The reason I'm giving 3 stars is for the weave. The hair itself is pretty good quality- or at least I think it is but I'm not an expert and this was my first time getting a weave. The way she styled the hair was also gorgeous. What I wasn't a big fan of was that the lace closure had been cut wrong so you could still see some of the lace in the front making it look like I had a scar which I tried my best to cover up with some root spray. Another thing was that the top part was sewed on a little bulky so if I don't style it right you can see the weave tracks. Other than that no complaints it's a wonderful salon. read more

This is my ONLY salon. I am quite picky about where I get my hurr done! Lol. My stylist's name is Yolanda and she is a sweetheart. She never fails to fix my tore-up look (when I walk in the door) and is gentle on my tender-head. She's absolutely Heaven sent! Previously, I went to a different stylist who worked with Y. at The Elegant Palace (now closed). When the shop closed, my stylist recommended me to Yolanda and I've been with her ever since. In fact, I moved away to Valencia, and was too scared to venture out to another stylist. I tried one lady and wasn't impressed and almost found myself near tears at the thought of searching for a new stylist. Afterall, if you don't have trust what do you have? It was after this situation that I reached out to my former stylist for help and almost had a heart-attack when I heard that her shop closed. It was at this time that she gave me the referral. As most women are, I am concerned with preserving the health of my hair and would hate to risk breakage or damage to my hair from over-processing. I saw Jazmin Boyd for a press and trim. I've been at the Total Package before and have always had a good experience. So of course when I go in I'm hoping to get that same quality but wasn't sure this time because I was having somebody new do my hair. Jazmin washed and deep condition my hair prior to the press, and while I'm getting it pressed she we chit chatted and I felt very comfortable with her right away. When she had finished styling my hair she handed me the mirror to see the end result...and I fell in LOVE! I know it wasn't anything complicated but I still loved my hair. It exceeded the usual already good quality service I've gotten before. The way she styled it was perfect. And I never told her how I wanted it she just did it. In Aug/Sept I was in the process of finding a new hair stylist and came to yelp to help in that decision. I came across a few different shops that specialize in African American hair & made decision on Starr based on a few factors. Summary of my experience: I called the salon looking to get a full weave installed with color. There were 2 stylist on the yelp page named that had good reviews so I called and requested the first lady who I found out was no longer working there. I then decided on Starr since she was my 2nd choice. I made the appointment about 2-3 weeks in advance as I was getting my hair done for my 30th birthday. A week prior to my appointment, I texted Starr to confirm my appointment and detailed the service I wanted along with a few additional services I needed to add (perm on the leave-out, more coloring than originally requested). Starr confirmed back via text message by stating "Okay- See you Wednesday." The following week, on Wednesday, I walk in asked for Starr & am taken by another stylist, 'T' to the chair. I was asked if I was getting a wash and flat-iron & in clear confusion, I said "no, I'm getting a full weave with Starr." The owner (?) then says "OH, Starr isn't here- Can you do a full weave T?" I paused and said "but I had an appointment with Starr" They call her and she apologizes profusely saying it was a mix up. She asks I come in the following day and would give me a discount on the services. I mentioned to T (an old classmate) and Starr that Friday was my birthday so I NEEDED it done Thurs. I was pissed she flaked on me but appreciated her many apologies & as a result a discount on my services. ( + my b-day was a day away, I needed someone to do my hair.) Thursday, the next day I arrive 2-3 mins after my appointment time & some chick makes a comment as I walk to the back as if me being a few mins late was a problem. I found that odd as hell ESPECIALLY when the stylist flaked on me the day prior, but lil children always have something to say so I digress. Anywho, Starr was friendly and again apologized when I arrived however, she ultimately didn't do what I asked her to do. I'm not sure if it's because she knew she wasn't getting the full amount for the services or if she just didn't want to do what the CLIENT was asking of her. I ended up paying another 2 stylist to complete her work aka dying it correctly. I wanted to support this salon because it's close to home and an old friend works there but if this is the service NEW CLIENTS receive, I'll gladly take my business elsewhere. read more

This would be a zero rating if possible but I will give this salon 1 star for the simple fact that they did a good job on my daughters hair, although they jacked up mine. I have been debating since Dec 1 whether not I was going to do this review. But It is necessary. The first time I went to Starr to do my hair she assured me that she knew how to install a closure however that was not the case. It was sewn down too tight and sent back to far on my head and my hairline showed up to the front which is salt and pepper and did not match the closure. I ended up taking the closure off myself and sewed it into place correctly, thankfully the day before my vacation. The other thing wrong with that appointment was that I brought in some very expensive 32 inch hair which was cut down to 22 inches. If I wanted a 22 inch hair style I would've bought 22 to 24 inch hair. OK I did my hair myself for a while until I decided to cut my own hair. However I was very specific that I didn't want my hair cut so short that it could not braided and put it back in a weave if I wanted to. So the young lady who initially cut my hair did exactly what I was requesting. But Starr said that that wouldn't look right and said she would just cut a little more, and instead she scalped me. It was the most awful hairstyle have ever seen. And to top it off my hair is so short that it cannot be braided in the back at all. Thank you for the response but as a business owner I would never let a customer walk out, clearly unhappy with the service they've received. I even said that I did not like it when you asked me. Why did I have to resort to writing a review before you offered to fix the situation. read more

I went in for a Keratin treatment because I'm officially divorced from relaxers and separated from weaves which seem to pull my hair out. So I'm looking for something more natural and manageable. I found The Total Package on Yelp. When I called, they assigned me to Angie because she's the only one that does Keratin. I lucked out. Angie is so nice and attentive and knowledgeable. She's right there when the dryer goes off and takes you out so you're not sitting there wasting time. She gave me helpful advice on how to help my hair grow and shine. I did my research and found this little place, which is like 5 mins away from where I live (perfect). It's hidden away on B St., near the corner on Foothill. Inside, it's big and roomy with plenty of chairs and hair stations. I met Jeannine, who's extra friendly, kind, and angel. I needed a perm badly and she worked magic on my hair. Lori at the Total Package has been doing my hair for almost four years now. I wear my hair short, but I don't settle for just any "cookie-cutter" short haircut. I'm extremely picky about my cuts and Lori NEVER disappoints me. For those of who don't know, a good stylist is someone who is great at their craft, but also listens to the client. Lori always listens to me and gets it right, and makes my hair HOT! Now we're at the point where when she asks what I want - all I say is how I want "feel" about my hair and she nails it everytime. Im extremely cautious with selecting hair salons for mine and my 4 kids hair. That said I rarely get our hair salon serviced due to shenanigans, attitudes and loss of our hair through poor choices made by a stylist. So of course it was the holiday and my family wanted to take pictures on Easter Sunday . It was Saturday and with 4 thick heads of hair I gave up before even trying because my reg stylist was booked out for wks. I looked on yelp saw this shop Total Package and thought id give it a shot to at least call. At 7am I called and the phone was answered which rarely happens at most shops lol. The young lady Jazmin asked what we needed and vouched that she could work 2 of us in. We all needed a wash press and flat iron. We arrived and their shop is clean and very well decorated with ample parking. Our stylist also looked the part with her own hair nails outfit nice and well groomed. Jazmin happily worked in my 2 oldest daughters and had their hair looking stunning! Amazing to say the least. I was so happy that id be able to take pictures with at least half of us looking good. Well Ms. Jazmin felt determined that all of us would have our hair looking right and believe it or not she took time out on her day off to come in on EASTER SUNDAY and finish up mine and my youngest daughter's hair!!! Who does that??? She gave us a great price and most of all everyone's hair was so silky, shiny, smooth healthy looking she even trimmed us up gratis!!! My family decided to take pictures at the darn marina and I cringed each time the wind blew and then the darn seamist that kept floating around but guess what??? ZERO BLACK GIRL HAIR CASUALTIES!!!! The price quoted was good for a shop. The shop was clean and well lit. Angie was very professional and easy to communicate with. Before we started, she thoroughly asked how I wanted my hair styled. I changed my mind last minute from singles to tree braids. Angie was flexible and accommodating to my indecisiveness. She paused every now and then while braiding to ensure I was happy with the work. Now, I have not set foot in a salon for over two years because I have had some BAD experiences and not bad as in good, just BAD. So I was definitely nervous about putting my head in the hands of strangers, especially on my birthday right before my big celebration. This salon was recommended to be by a friend and former coworker so I had decided to try it out for my new look. I was turning 24 and decided that something dramatic was needed to reflect my newly mature (meaning old) self and what's more dramatic then chopping off all your hair? Although the stylists were a bit skeptical "...are you sure you want to cut it all off...?" they helped me pick a new 'do that I was comfortable with, after ruling out shaving the sides of my head and cutting a design in the back. Hey, when I say dramatic, I mean it! Gotta take baby steps when it comes to your hair I guess. Nonetheless, I went in looking like Sam Jackson in Unbreakable and came out looking like Halle Berrrrryyyyyyyyyy...Halle Berry!! Lori was my stylist and she was fantastic! She was patient with me even though I wasn't sure what I wanted and she actually listened to me, which is key in a hair stylist. Also, Lori's assistant gave me the best shampoo of my life! The Total Package may not be the hottest looking salon but don't let the sparse design fool you...they are putting in some serious work over there. And the atmosphere is very friendly and open. I know in the past I have felt weird walking into a black hair salon for the first time because it can be like going to a party where you don't know anyone and they're all wondering who the hell invited you. But here I felt welcome and I felt that my stylist treated me like a guest not like a customer. And this was the first time EVER that I was in and out the shop in 3 hours. That is pretty much unheard of in a black salon, no matter what style you get.
